In my mind, in order to be a great hair stylist and colorist one must have the unique mix of being a good communicator so they hear what you want and can clarify when needed, an artistic flair, have a sense of what would work well for you so they can guide you if needed, and know the technical aspects of their trade. Kayla, without a doubt, has all of the above! Also, my hair is colored to the lightest shade of blonde there is, which can be tricky. Today was my first day at Apres Hair Salon and I was very happy with the experience I had with Rene, the owner. She provided excellent (and patient!) advice, stated with conviction, prior to my services. She literally talked me out of some services and I went home with a lower overall expenditure. I came in for a color and partial highlight, but she convinced me to just do the root color for now (no highlights) and then we added on a much-needed haircut as well. It ended up being a perfect color and stellar haircut. I have found that some of the stylists in West Seattle are either good at coloring or cuts, Rene is great at both. I am so happy to have found her and just booked my next two appointments with her. René is EXCEPTIONAL. I found her a couple years ago when I moved to Seattle. I was tired of leaving salons with that "It'll dull over time, right??" kind of panic, and I spent hours on Google looking for that ideal person who both deeply understands hair and cares about her work. As soon as I met her, I knew I had made the right decision. René took her time - rather than jumping right in, she sat with me for 20 minutes to discuss my budget and goals, set clear expectations, and make a plan together that I felt good about. It's hard to overstate the change I've seen in my hair since I started working with René. I wouldn't describe my color as a disaster before I met her (although she might!), but it was that kind of brassy blonde that you can get by with, but it isn't doing you any favors. René worked her magic with the most thorough, delicate foils I've ever seen, and transformed that brassy color into a delicate, soft blonde that pulls in just enough of my natural color. My hair's also healthier than it's ever been - I get compliments on it constantly, and several of my friends were surprised to find out I'm naturally brunette! Beyond the service itself, she's just a genuinely lovely person to spend several hours with while you're getting your hair done. No more boring salon small talk! René is down to earth, straightforward, and funny, which makes the appointments something to look forward to. She used to work in Capitol Hill, but she recently opened her own salon in West Seattle. So let me start by saying that I only leave reviews when I'm either extremely pissed or extremely happy. In this case, I'm so happy. I received a horrible full foil from a super bougie salon in downtown. I was so upset by how I looked that I practically cried all the way home. I got home and immediately started thinking that I needed to find someone else and reached out to several salons. Rene from Brunette mix got back to me even though it was like 8 pm and she got me in the next day with one of the stylists there, Kayla. BJ is an Artist. When I walk out of Brunette Mix I feel transformed and rejuvenated. My hair isn't the easiest to cut and style, it's thinner, has weird cowlicks, and is somewhat damaged from years of bleaching. I was disappointed in my Brazilian Blowout treatment and it wasn't worth the $300+ I paid (Stylist was DJ). I expected different results based on my long discussion with DJ as having 12+ Brazilian Blowouts/Keratins before, I knew what was possible, how my hair reacts and what I was looking for. The treatment did relax my hair a bit but never really straightened it like I experienced at other Salon. And it didn't last very long - barely a few months. I recently returned to the area after a bit of traveling for work. I was thankful to reconnect with my long last hairdresser Sarah. The space is comfortable, clean.and has great natural light. I always enjoys Sarah's company and down to earth style. I am natural born blonde however as I have grown older my hair has darkened... So I either balliage (sp) or foil both of which Sarah is trained in and does perfectly. I foiled this time, asked her to go light because it is summer as you know, she recommended breaking my base and when we were complete I was more than.satisfied and as the days went by I kept thinking I need to tell her.. Brunette Mix = not just for brunettes! I see Sarah at this salon and she's amazing. She listens and takes her time. She's one of the only stylists I have seen (and I've seen quite a few) who aren't anxious to make huge, sweeping changes to my hair ("how bout a pixie cut?" NOPE!). If I want my fine hair longer, she'll find a way to make it look thicker and with more body than it actually has. While I'm sure it would look better a little shorter, Sarah is a miracle worker and respectful of what I'm trying to do rather than what she wants to do. She's also constantly in classes to continue learning the latest and greatest in cut and color. Sarah is fun to talk to and always professional. The salon is located in the heart of West Seattle. You can find parking around around the area, along with the free 2-hour lot just one block south west of the salon. This is a dog-friendly salon, in a respectful way. The staff seem to genuinely like working together, care about each other and its a very drama-free, friendly environment. I've been there for my appointments and have seen little kids and older folks and everyone in between getting hair services. Wowza, don't think I've ever been the first to review anything...here goes! For X-Mas my husband bought me a Brunette Mix gift certificate, thankfully since I'm terrible at getting my haircut and it's about 50 feet away from my apartment. It was with Tess and she placated me by looking at some cell phone pics for the short cut I was going for and did a great job styling. I had $30 left on the certificate and just used Mix's nice new online reservation system to book a cut with Sarah. Took a look at the certificate that said Tess on it and thought to call ahead and confirm that I could use it. And, you guessed it, I can't and Tess is no longer at Mix. Per Sarah "They are independent and can't honor it." Not too huge of a deal, but they should probably add that fine print to the certificates if it's a policy (which I just emailed to Sarah). Definitely worth a try if you live near the Alaska Junction. read more

Sarah is terrific! She does a great job in cutting my long straight hair (not as easy to cut as you'd think apparently, since I've come away from other hairdressers with uneven length, odd bangs, etc.) But I always leave happy with the length and the experience. I have had my hair done by many, many stylists, and I have never been more satisfied, or happy, than with Collins from Brunette Mix. With most hairstylists in the past, I would take a picture to them, and they'd get it in the ballpark of what I wanted, which I thought was fair because it's hard to get exactly what you want right? Wrong! Every time I have gone to Collins, she nails it, perfectly. It doesn't matter if I'm doing a bayalage, ombre, cut, trim, she does an amazing job!! She spends the first part asking questions to get an understanding of what you want, then she'll make suggestions, look at your pictures, and ask some more questions, she's even taken notes before, she's very thorough and soooo worth it! Also, she's fun and really friendly, and never tries to push product on you! Some people may think this place is too pricey, but you really are getting what you pay for!
