I am exceptionally pleased with Aqua. I defected from one of the hipper, pricier salons in town when it became apparent that I bored my hairdresser. I walked into Aqua on a whim and haven't left. Twice, I've gone in with no idea what I wanted done to my hair and walked out with an absolutely fabulous haircut that was exactly what I didn't know I wanted. My color is perfect, and my last set of high/lowlights lasted four months before looking like it needed touching up. Prices are very reasonable (two-thirds what I was paying around the corner!!), and props to the stylists for always being cheerful and fun. read more

My usual stylist at my salon in Royal Oak had to cancel my appointment, so I needed to get a root touch-up last minute. They fit me in and did an excellent job. I was in and out quickly, the dye job was perfect (as was the blowout!), and the price was reasonable. I now have somewhere else I can go for my color, which is always good to have! This place is great and I've never seen anyone leave with a bad hair cut or color. The people are very friendly and the prices are spectacular. For half of what you'd pay at the other Royal Oak salons you can get the same thing. The only negative I'd put out there is that often the stylists will talk to each other about non-work things and it's just slightly unprofessional. But it's totally worth it. read more

Love this place! I had spent 10 years with my stylist, but started to become annoyed with having 4 sometimes 5 hours because he would always overbook. I put up with it because I loved how he well he did color, but I had enough when he forgot an appointment I made for a very special event. I did some research on places that specialized in color, I found aqua and after talking to receptionist she referred me to Matt. Matt was so knowledgeable and friendly I was Williams no to try him out and boy am I glad I did. He did a fantastic job. After having him do my hair for 2 years he moved and I started seeing Lisa and she is amazing. Prices are pretty reasonable for area as well read more

I've had the pleasure of having Jordan Savine cut my hair before she was working in this salon. Let me just say that having hair with two different textures and strange tendencies to flip every which way is difficult to get a hair cut that suits both my taste and my hair. Jordan was able to not only decipher what I was imaging in my head between the picture I brought and my vague descriptions, but able to put it into practice in a cute cut! I would definitely recommend her to anyone looking for a great hair cut as well as anyone looking to have a great conversation! This review is for Robyn and how absolutely awesome she is!! I've been working with Robyn for the past 5 years and Michigan is so lucky to have her!! When I first met Robyn I had very short hair with little done to it. She helped me reach my hair length that I was looking for and color while keeping my hair healthy. I am currently very blonde and I don't think I would have as healthy hair as I did if I didn't have Robyn guiding me. She is an amazing person to chat with while you're sitting in her chair. I visited this salon last week for the first time. Holly was my stylist. I got highlights and lowlights put in with a cut and blow dry after. I received a comprehensive consultation and then she got too work. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. I thought all the employees to be genuinely friendly. My color and cut turned out amazing! I even got a holiday gift of a full sized shampoo. I would definitely recommend this salon to anyone who hasn't found their perfect "fit". read more

I went in to see Christina for a color and cut a few weeks ago. She is amazinggg! She is so friendly and warm, and definitely will make you feel comfortable. She knew exactly what I wanted, after seeing the picture I had brought in. My color and style came out just as I had hoped...fantastic! Jordan has been cutting my hair for about a year now and she is fantastic. She took me from a shoulder length mess to the perfect gentlemen's cut, and I haven't gone anywhere else since. Every time I go in I throw something different at her and she is always able to give me exactly what I want, without ignoring what would be best for me as well. This salon is pretty pricy compared to regular cuts. A lot of clients would say why get a cut at a pricy place when you can get one for a good price with better work. Just because prices are higher, does not mean the cuts are better. They do a good job depending on the stylist. I got my cut here, I didn't like it but my stylist was very friendly. I never met anyone at the school before and they arranged for Jordan to be with me. She's been my stylist ever since. Not only does Jordan do great color, her cuts are even better. She has taken me from every day red to a Firecracker Umbré flame red! My hair is healthy, RED and I get compliments from strangers ALL the time. Jordan is an amazing stylist. Martha is my stylist of choice, a genuine sweetheart but will always entertain you with her stories & outlook on life. She always does an amazing job, but also listens & gets to know who is sitting in front of her. This also applies to everyone else that works here. Everyone is greeted by a friendly face & leaves satisfied. I have been coming here for over 3 years and always feel comfortable. They have done a lot of remodeling & made some upgrades that make it look fresh and inviting. It's also reasonably priced and there are no ego requirements. It really pains me to write this review, as I have had some very good blowouts, and hair Klix extension fixes, and heat styling from this salon over the years, but after my last visit I will never return. Robyn, Ashley, and Emily have provided me quality services at reasonable prices and I wish them well. I was in for a blowout with Emanuela for the first time on Thursday, and it was a nightmare. I told her I had extensions and she was extremely rough with my hair in the shampoo bowl. She did not use a detangler, or heat protectant spry, or comb through my hair at all. She picked up her round brush, and started in with what appeared to be a non-professional blow dryer. I have never had my ears burned getting a blowout before, and I thought after I told her she burned one of my ears she would be careful but she wasn't. I told her I was going in for surgery the following week, and she kept asking questions like why I needed the surgery etc., it made me feel very uncomfortable. She managed to burn my other ear, and when I said ouch she told me that I was really sensitive. She also told me that one of her clients took her own tape in extensions out with rubbing alcohol, and told me that was an option if I wanted to do that. (That would pretty much damage my fine, thin hair forever.) She yanked so hard on my hair, I was choking back screams, finally she said she was sorry "I was so sensitive." I should have just walked out, but I had somewhere to be and didn't want to show up with wet hair. It was earlier in the morning, and we were the only people in the salon, otherwise I would not have left without speaking to the owner. My ears burned for a full 24 hours, and I have never had any stylist be so rough with my hair. read more

I've been going to Aqua for about three years and Matt has been an excellent stylist. However, for the last year every time I set foot in this place he has an "assistant" who typically has no experience working on my hair. The last time I went in to see Matt he had some half twit girl dye my hair. She forgot to put a conditioner in it and now it's pretty much ruined until I pay to have a deep conditioning treatment done. While she was dying my hair all she did was talk about how much plastic surgery she had had and her three boob jobs. I'd love to keep seeing Matt, but unfortunately I won't be making another appointment here since he doesn't bother to see his own clients. read more

This is the first hair salon I've actually found myself loyal to, and I'm 34 years old. Great prices, good atmosphere, clean, easy parking (which in downtown Royal Oak is a surprise), I can book an appointment and be seen in 24 hours (which is unheard of, apparently, at many other salons), and WONDERFUL staff. I've seen either two or three stylists; all were excellent. The receptionist/customer service extraordinaire, Uly, greets you, takes your coat, and offers you coffee or tea. The owner is often present and looking in to see what's going on at your chair. And my stylist, Ashley Ciara, is the BEST! She's now colored my hair three times with GORGEOUS blues, pinks, and greens. I know, not traditional. Trust me, this is a very professional coloring job. I've worn this hair as a teacher and to black tie events for my husband, who's role is President-level. She's an artist and the colors were subtle yet vibrant, in your face but able to be hidden, and I've been complimented on them daily. Even months later, the blue is still pretty and I still receive compliments. I trust her enough to sit down and say, "Just do your thing!" The salon is down to earth and friendly. I sat and waited for my appointment 45 minutes while Robyn blow dried another gals hair. When she styled (or not) my hair it took her 15 minutes or less and my hair is a mess. I've been going to Aqua for 3 years now, ever since my previous salon got too pricey and the stylists became as snobby as the clientele. Aqua has reasonable prices, oftentimes lower than the bigger salon names in Royal Oak but pricier than a salon you'd find in say a strip mall. All of the stylists are friendly and easy going, and I've noticed many of them are quick to pitch in with sweeping not just their stations but the stations of other stylists as well. Ashley has always been my stylist, and I've never been disappointed. She gives a great cut and even better highlights, and as a repeat customer, she's always been sure to ask me what worked and what didn't about my last cut and color. The salon has embraced trends, whether it be color or extensions (for example), and I also appreciate that the stylists look put together without appearing snobbish. I've been to some salons where the stylists look like they just rolled out of bed (and not in a trying to look like I'm not trying kind of way) or they're so overly done up that they're spending more time fixing their own hair than they are mine. Aqua is a great, intimate salon with reasonable prices and a wonderful staff. read more

I went into this salon about 8 weeks ago or so. I have a very different hair texture. I am affrican american , but dont have your typical affrican american hair. Anyway I got all over color and a cut and was very satisified. The staff is friendly, the woman who worked on me was great, the prices were good. There are mixed reviews on here about this salon as we can see, i would say dont' base if your going there off my review or any others, go for yourself. I had a good experience and will be going back. I would say the salon needs to be a bit cleaner but thats really the only down fall . read more

I agree that this salon WON'T honor their own coupons they have on their own website and they charge way more then they list their prices as. I took my daughter here and they were rude about the coupon and said they didn't know about it even when we showed them! Also, it was very filthy dirty and no one seems to care. They also take 3 times as long as anywhere else to do hair!!! My daughter's color was so bad and her simple trim of long hair was so off she was embarrassed We had to go else where to have it redone! We would NEVER return here or recommend it. They need to clean up and update website and call in that cable TV show for a salon makeover. Maybe a health inspector would help too. read more

Super nice, talkative and did an awesome job, the blonde was perfect and she didn't cut too much off (which I think stylists ALWAYS DO to me.). Not to mention the price was dead on. I've been to Aqua Salon a few times- mostly for the amazing 15 dollar blowouts on Thursdays. You simply cannot beat that deal. I had a negative experience at a nearby salon and went to Aqua hoping they could fix my hair. My appointment with Robyn was really a wonderful experience. She is SO fun and such a people person, which to me is part of the salon experience! She took a lot of time to make sure she knew exactly what I wanted, as well as making suggestions for what might look good. Not only did she fix my botched color from the other salon, but I left feeling so confident and good about my hair! I'd pay a lot for that kind of confidence, and their prices are SO reasonable. Much less than the salon where I had a miserable experience! It's so convenient that they are right in downtown Royal Oak by the parking structure, and it is really easy to make a last-minute appointment if necessary. While it can be tempting to go to some of the larger, more well-known salons in the area, I highly suggest going to Aqua and have Robyn do your hair! You will be so happy you did, and your wallet will be happy too! Great business to have here in RO! read more
