I hate posting negative reviews of a company or person but this situation unfortunately warrants it. I went to Flip Salon on Tuesday to have Melissa Maiullo cut and color my hair. I had a good experience with her straightening my hair before so I went back. I thought she was a good person who just messed up until instead of owning her mistake, she tried to lie, cheat and gaslight her way out of it. Instead of doing a good job on my hair she edited a photo to make it look like she did as an excuse not to refund me any money. If she would have told me I can't do what you want but I can give you regular highlights, I would have said no thank you and left. I NEVER expected her to fabricate a photo to skirt culpability. She sold her integrity for $365 and revealed herself to be an untrustworthy person with weak character and morals. The owner is going to comment about how the lighting in the salon made my hair look like that but Irene, you need to stop gaslighting me. I was in your salon under the same lighting that the (edited) photo was taken in and my hair looked nothing like it. Otherwise I would have left happy and been upset later. And that's not what happened is it? Stop gaslighting me. But if you're sticking to that then who wants to go to a salon that makes their hair look COMPLETELY different from what you went there for as soon as you walk outside? This all could have been solved so easily if Melissa said I'm so sorry, I misunderstood what you wanted and did something completely different--instead of doubling down on her lies and getting the owner to co-sign them. A little accountability from two adult women is not too much to ask for. Edit: Irene, you did not offer to fix my hair for free, you offered to re-tone it. Toner will not make my hair lighter and you know that. Also, Irene, you took the photo of my hair outside. How are you going to say it's just the lighting? I contacted Irene and said I would take my reviews down--all she has to do is retake the photo in the salon lighting and show me that I'm wrong. That the photo isn't edited. Stopped by today for an eyebrow wax & Robin did an AMAZING job. It is pricy (by my standards, anyway) but worth it for the level of detail. She really took time to look for stray hairs and determine the shape I needed instead of just ripping off hair. I have tried a bunch of different waxes and aftercare but always get redness and have even bled from waxes...this was by far my most comfortable ever, with very, very limited irritation. After 2+ years of coming here regularly I'm still loving every cut I get from Kyle. He's always professional, fast, and super friendly. He says I can always come back for a trim or touch up if I need one. I never need one. He styles my hair with a few beachy waves. I always wish I had planned to go out after, to make the most of my extra cute hair day :) The salon runs like clockwork. I appreciate the prompt phone reminders the day before my appointment. They accept credit cards, but no tip on card. So bring some cash for the tip. Getting to the salon: I love to bike here on a nice day, amd see a bit of downtown Ferndale before I head home. Plenty of bike parking stations nearby. When I drive I sometimes get lucky finding hourly parking on 9 mile, just out front. The salon has a back door onto Troy street too, which gives you more parking options. I recommend parking out back.(note: in 2019 there will be construction out back, so don't count on that Troy St parking then.) read more

I migrate salons a lot so am constantly fighting with new stylists trying to have them comprehend my oddball hair. Half the time the stylists pretend to listen, but really are not listening. Types like me don't care about chit chat; I'm here to get a good cut. I can call friends for talking. Then they screw something up because they weren't listening... that said, Christy surprised me. Not only because she was sweet and intelligent, as well as a good conversationalist, but she did EXACTLY what I wanted. I wanted an ombré color. That's right! I'm gonna review a salon! I may be a man, I may be over weight, and hairy as hell, but I am gonna tell you why Flip is the best salon in metro Detroit... For starters, my guy there, Dean gives the best mens haircut in Michigan. I know this because I have experienced more high-end hair salons than any man ought to, ever. My girlfriend of 4 years works in the beauty industry. She has relationships with every salon in the area and I have been FORCED to try them all! I wont name names, but suffice it to say that I have experienced everything Birmingham, Royal Oak and other cities have to offer and Flip is doing something unique. Simply put, Flip is not a douche bag salon. There is no boom-chick, boom-chick music. The stylists are not dressed like hookers and the space has a nice warm and inviting feel. While Flip is modern, it is not pretentious or sterile feeling. It is surprisingly not loud - even with all the blow dryers. They have managed to create a space that is uniquely comfortable. If you are a dude, go see Dean! He will make you look handsome and then you can get some. If you are balding, shave yer head - but do it at home and save some money! If you are a lady, they can hook you up, make you foxy and you wont need to dress like a hooker any more! Leave that to the stylists at the other salons! read more

I can be kind of a cheapskate- and so it wasn't until a Groupon appeared that I finally gave Flip a go. That's when I met my new hair-girlfriend, Chelsey... she didn't judge me for having attempted to dye my hair at home. I've since been back regularly to get my hair done by Chelsey - I always love my color, and she gives me a cut that I can do something with. My husband jokes that when I go to get my hair done that I'm there forever - but I don't really mind because the conversation flows well enough that the time kind of flies by. So the stylists here are way trendier than me, it's true - I am not cool. However, I've never felt uncomfortable here or out of place. I pay more than I used to on my hair - but from the compliments I get after an appointment here, I think it's money well spent. I love supporting businesses in Ferndale, I love that Chelsey and I can laugh at poop jokes, and I love coming here to get my hair did. P.S. - They do a lot of different events here as well. After reading the good reviews I decided to try out Flip since I'm searching for a new salon in the area. Not impressed, the stylist got dye in my eye (OUCH)! Equally bad she stained my skin terribly and then handed ME a towel to clean it off. I'm pretty forgiving but that's unacceptable. The cut didn't work with my natural wave. I haven't had a real stylist since moving to Detroit almost two years ago, and I recently tried Flip on a friend's recommendation. Besides it being just a really cool spot with a retro vibe in Ferndale, they have amazing products and the most polite staff I've ever encountered in a salon. My stylist, Bella, was a professional, kind, and warm-hearted little miracle worker! She completely changed my look in the best way, and I walked out with a better style that I envisioned before going in! My wife went there today, came out with messed up hair color... Kathy was her stylist I believe and she did really bad job... I remember going together with my wife to consultation with that lady and when she showed picture of how she wants the hair color to turn up Kathy said there won't be any problem. Considering the fact that it wasn't dyed or chemically treated before, my wife's hair color is nothing compared to what she asked for. I will upload pictures so people can know what to expect. I actually went to Flip because it has received great reviews here on Yelp. I recently moved to the area and as a woman the biggest pain in the ass is finding a new salon. You have to find people you connect with, don't feel uncomfortable sitting with for hours on end and who can also do a great job of getting your hair right. For me Flip feel short and won't be my salon of choice in the future. The stylist listened to what I wanted but didn't ask questions in great detail. I had to more tell her what I usually do and she still missed a few of the key points, like where I part my hair. Any stylist I have ever visited in the past first asks where a woman parts here hair so they can cut and color toward that! I got full highlights and a haircut with layers. For the highlights the color turned out nice but one of my biggest upsets was that the color did not go all the way down to my roots. There was a half inch difference and I thought it looked bad. This error was only because she didn't dye my hair to my hairstyle. If she would have asked where I normally part my hair and dyed it to the part this wouldn't have been a problem. I get bright red highlights so they have to be prefect against my brown hair or they look like a home job instead of fresh. Everything else with the color turned out well (good spacing on the highlights and vibrant color) except the part of my roots that weren't dyed. It looked like I needed color, not that I just got it. The haircut was decent. I get layers cut into my hair and asked her to do more with the layers and make them more defined then what I have had. She did a good job with the cut and the layers and I liked them. The price is comparable to other high end salons in the area. You aren't going to find a great deal at a salon in Ferndale or Royal Oak so though it's pricey it's comparable to anything else local. Overall the experience was mediocre. Good color but with major mistakes, the cut good, the staff were not that friendly to me and I didn't make a good connection here to return or recommend. read more

I followed my stylist Adrienne here from the salon she was at previously. Adrienne is the bomb, and has been the only person I've allowed to touch my hair for the last 7 or so years. But aside from her skills, Flip has been a positive experience for me in every other way. It's easy to get an appointment when I need one, and they give the courtesy reminder call that I always appreciate 24 hours beforehand. The salon is chic and clean, and when I arrive I'm greeted by a friendly receptionist who offers me a beverage while I wait. I never take it, usually because I am never waiting more than a minute or two before being escorted back to my chair. Like most salons they use awesome high end products that make my scalp smile and my hair happy. They carry a few different product lines in house, and occasionally run decent sales on them. It's easy in, easy out, and *knock on wood* I'm always able to find a close parking spot out front. My hair looks fabulous ($45 for a cut) and I'm on with my day. My one tiny complaint - they have no way to add a tip if you're paying credit card. So bring cash (or be a pain and leave a personal check, which is also permissible, but who would ever want to?) for your stylist. read more

I have been coming to Flip for many years now. Michelle who does make up and brows is absolutely incredible at what she does. I know I was touting Nancy in the past as being a wizard, but Michelle has taken my thin eyebrows and actually given me an arch, as well as taken the extra time to teach me how to apply brow powder to them so they look like vintage Hollywood brows!! I have had her do my make up for a few retro photoshoots, and the result is always WOW! Plus she's funny and beautiful, and you feel like you are chatting with an old friend. Anna who does pedicures is flippin fantastic!! I have yet to have a pedi last as long and look as good as when Anna does her magic on them. Her manis are great, too, but with my line of work i just can't get them very often. She is fun and meticulous, and I feel worth every penny. Katey is still rockin' my hair. I will never see anyone else, unless she's stuck in the Antarctic and it's an absolute emergency, but then I would just probably see Chelsea or Kyle, because their work looks great, too. My hair is always red, and it's a pain the patootie, but Katey has fantastic hair powers in her hands and I always walk out of there looking amazing. Sorry, I really wanted to like Flip and at first I did but each of my returning visits seemed to be worse than the one before. At my first visit I seriously loved my hair cut, even though it took over two hours for just a cut. At my next two visits I did color and a cut, but it just wasn't the same. I had the terrible experience at Dye Salon across the street, had the groupon with new stylist who didn't do much to my hair, then the owner of Dye made my hair worse, I loved it until the big white stripe on the back of my head was pointed out to me. Speaking of Dye I also had a bad experience at Curl up and Dye. Trying to find the right stylist is hard. I love Essential Elegance, but the drive to Howell is a b**. Flip is in Ferndale, and always wanted to try it, and called, got a same day appointment with Caroline, she fixed the Dye mess, and I look great, highlights for $75 on my long hair, she even styled it the way I style it (flat iron). Compliments galore and I feel good again, like sunny and fresh. They carry Bumble and Bumble, my favorite products. I will be coming back. I was in search of an affordable, local, full service salon to do an underarm waxing. I found Flip online and noticed they were reasonably priced so I made an appointment. I waited around 10-15 minutes because the lady was late getting to work (not impressed). After she took me back into the room she asked me numerous times how I found Flip and I told her I found them online in search of an affordable salon. She then asked me what price I was quoted and I told her $25. She told me they charge $30 and that their website prices needed to be update but that she'd give it to me for $25 if that's what I was quoted at. I DID NOT appreciate her asking me what I was quoted at OR her telling me that the price was more than what I was told when I called and what was listed online. Once she was done (poorly) waxing my first underarm she made me put my head at the opposite end of the bed, where my wet feet just were to do my second underarm!!! Apparently her lamp didn't reach around the bed, making me switch sides. When she went to do the second underarm she dropped the lamp on my face! When she was done with the waxing it didn't even look like she removed any hair. My underarms were still extremely hairy, red, sore, and BLEEDING!! She didn't even attempt to tweeze remaining hairs (probably because there were too many). I've had my underarms waxed numerous times before and I've never had an experience like this! She was soooo unprofessional and unpleasant. Luckily I didn't intend on tipping because they don't take a gratuity on cards! This place is terrible! I have a process I use to test salons. It's the simple phrase "suprise me". I just had this idea in my head that if I was too specific I would be making the stylist lean in a direction that may not necessarily look good on me. I've had absolutely horrible luck with this method the past, but this worked out perfectly at Flip. My only indication of what I wanted was that I wanted to spend no more than five minutes getting ready and I want a trendy cut. Flip passed the test with flying colors. read more

I have several complaints, but these were the worst part: told the girl not to use a razor/thinning shears on my hair because it makes it frizzy. She found out that I couldn't see with my glasses off so she thought I didn't know, but I could feel her using thinning shears. Told her what I wanted and showed her a picture OF ME with the hair I wanted, and she said she wasn't going to do it because my hair wouldn't do it. I've had two haircuts at Flip, and this last one is far and away the best and boldest haircut I've ever had! I am so happy with the way Katey -- and previously, the way Shelby -- really listen to what I want, patiently look through the pictures I bring in and answer all of my (likely ridiculous) questions before they even wash my hair, much less bring the scissors to it. I'm extremely particular about my hair (anecdotal evidence: I hate trying new stylists so much that when I moved from Chicago, I managed to stay with my same stylist there for over 2 years after I left by fitting my haircuts into my weekend visits to my friends in the city), but I can wholeheartedly say that I have never felt my hair (and new bangs!) look better. Not to mention, the staff is so accommodating as well! This past cut was scheduled with Shelby, but when she got sick, the receptionist Danielle called me first thing in the morning to deliver the news, then helped me reschedule by listening to what I wanted (bangs) and recommending Katey (a bang genius). I was fit in later that same day, and Katey made me feel so comfortable with her that I went for the bangs, even though I never otherwise would have trusted a new stylist to such a drastic cut. I recently moved to the area and found this salon via YELP. As my rating shows, I've experienced better. I was on time to my appointment and ended up waiting over 45 min to meet my hair stylist, and then another wait for a wash as there were no sinks available. My stylist was very friendly. She gave me a trim of my short hair, it went by rather quickly. The cost ended up being $60 which was shocking since they did not transform my hair in any way and I was told over the phone I was booked for a trim and received a trim. read more

Do you have hair? If so, bring it to Christie K at Flip. She's a legit miracle worker. She was recommended by a friend from work; now, we have almost everyone in our office going to see her. I'm someone who likes to change my color and style often. Christie rolls with any idea I come up with, but is also upfront about the results I can expect, or how a style or color will look on me. Her color corrections are the bomb - she's got a great eye for color and gives fantastic cuts. She's taken me from bright red to ash blonde (no easy feat). She can do a beautiful natural (but better) balayage or an amazing peacock blue/green/purple mix. A couple of my friends who worry about "forced salon small talk" have been really happy with Christie. She's easy to talk to, but she doesn't force any conversation, and will let you just relax quietly if that's your thing. Flip itself is great, too. Cute salon, great music, coffee, tea, snacks, and a good selection of hair products. While I've never seen anyone but Christie, I've also never seen anyone leave Flip looking anything but great. read more

So, after a year of growing my hair out to look similar to my mom's in the 70s. (Straight, long, hippy) I decided I needed a cut. Well, actually I decided I didn't want to do my own hair for an event and then Jackie (A fabulous stylist) told me that I really should get my hair cut because it was gross on the ends. (She was much nicer about it than that but in reality I knew that she knew that I knew what she meant, and I agreed.) That being said I now have an amazing new place to get my hair done, because I did book an appointment with her for the following weekend, AND IT WAS THE BEST HAIRCUT EVER. I seriously have never been so happy with my hair and I feel bad because I think I was freaking her out talking about all the nightmare places I had been before.. She expected me to hate it but, no, no, how could I? I'm not super picky but even if I was I would have nothing to complain about with this cut. I'll toot my own horn here, the hair on my head looks amazing. Oh and did I mention I'm now getting my brows done here as well? With Nancy? I didn't.. Local artists' works are displayed all over the walls, and the local arteratti come to imbibe on 2 buck chuck and coronas. I had a dreadful experience the last time I had my hair cut. I looked God awful. Luckily, this time around I went with an establishment with a reputation for doing great work. Christie did a phenomenal job and even took the time to help me research different styles that would work for me. That was super helpful because before that, all I had done research wise was google "curly hair styles for men" and circled the ones that I liked. Please Read! First, I want to mention. This one-star review just for the over and unclear price they charged me. The haircut is pretty good. I went to Flip Salon today, the cut was pretty good. I was complaining about the price they charged me. Even though I was not that loyal customer, but I still come once or twice per year. My appointment today (12/06/17) was conditional treatment and haircut from12pm-2pm. When I got my check from salon receptionist, it was $120. I complained to the salon receptionist, I said this price was far more than expected. I checked their website for the price for women's cut is $50 and that means $70 for the conditional treatment? I talked to them they gave me two reasons why they charge me $120. First, haircut price depended on the different stylists. My stylist today was Katy which was my stylist for three years. Second, my hair was tangled and thick so my stylist spent a lot of time on my hair. Actually, my appointment ended at 1:50 pm. Finally, the manager came out and she said she could charge me $100 instead. But $100 is still a lot. In the end, I paid $100 and felt I was cheated by this salon that I came for three years. I am not the new customer I know how they usually charge. The unclear price is not that good for the customer and takes advantages of the customer is even worse. I post this for three reasons. First, I recommend this salon can provide the better clear price for the customer. Second, if someone got the same treatment which is haircut and conditioning treatment can you tell me what price they charged so I have a clue whether I was overcharged or not. Third, if someone who had visited this salon and was treated in the same way, can you speak up. Keep silent sometimes can hurt more and more customers. I've had a couple really good experiences at Flip. I originally had a stylist named Julie who was really nice and gave me great highlights. She has since moved on, but I've also gotten a great haircut from Shelby. I let her know that I was growing my hair out, and that I wanted to be able to style it both curly (naturally) and straight, and she gave me a really nice, versatile cut. My only reservation was the price... haircuts STARTING at $50! Most of the nicer salons in Royal Oak are cheaper than that. For that reason, unfortunately, I won't be returning. I also attended on of their Blow Dry workshops (which is how I met Shelby). The stylists were SO nice and patient, and I really learned a lot. I can sometimes blow dry my curly hair completely without a flat iron! I also got a discount on products. I would really recommend one of their workshops. Let me say first that I have been to Flip before and had the pleasure of having Chelsey cut my hair and she was cool. Did a great job too. But most recently, on a whim, I had decided to lose six inches of hair. I walked in at 11 AM on Friday (no wait!) and saw a new stylist named Kristy. I was a little nervous to have a short hair cut since I have always had long hair, but Kristy was awesome. She was really friendly and put me at ease in no time. And my haircut ROCKS! I am such a dork and she made me look stylish. I did have some idea of what I wanted and a picture of my hoped-for haircut on someone else. Kristy took one look at it and said, "it's a cute cut, but, I don't think it will work as well on you". Only, she didn't say it like that. She said it delicately and tactfully, mentioning differences in thickness and texture, and suggested something else instead. And I am so glad she did! Anna saved my nails from a bad habit of gel nails, and showed me how perfectly done and long-lasting a natural nail could be. Her pedicure was in a semi-private room and to die for. She is well-skilled and trained in her art and it shows in her work and her choice of products, which are high-end European items for her pedis and really nice Zoya and Deborah Lipmann for nails.
