Without it, there would be a many stray cat and dog without any chance of going on to have a better quality of life. Firstly, the Humane Society: The Humane Society is a non-profit organization with a mission of helping neglected and abused animals. They have a good cause, and for that, I support them as a whole. I have looked into their mission, and they are pretty straightforward, without any weird ideological angle or catch. I am very biased towards the Humane Society, as that is where I adopted my household firstborn, Pinto (my English/American Bulldog / Dogue De Bordeaux mix). I will give you some backstory on him, just to give you an idea of the lengths they will go to for their rescues. Pinto was found at about 10 weeks of age by a construction worker in Southeast Houston. He was emaciated, worm-riddled and covered with mange. The kindhearted man brought him to the Houston Humane Society, where they diligently treated his skin condition, and brought him to great health. Now, the GCHS is just as great a branch as any Humane Society location. However, you must understand that Corpus has a real problem with neglected, homeless, and roaming pets. Not that this is a problem exclusive to this city, but if you lived here, you would notice that it is pronounced. There are many ways to support the Humane Society. You can volunteer, donate pet food (try to make sure it is "grain free" please) or blankets to your local one, or you can also donate directly to them. They make it very easy to setup one-time or recurring donations directly from your bank account if you wish to do that. It is the time of year to be thoughtful and considerate. Perhaps you want to give to a good cause. This would be one of them, IMO. Also, if you are in the market for a new companion, consider adopting one from here. Adopt, don't shop!

I called on Wednesday to schedule a reproductive/insemination exam for my dog and clearly explained what I needed. I was given a Friday 8:00 AM appointment and even received an email confirmation the next day verifying it. I showed up on time, only to be met with zero professionalism. No greeting. No courtesy. Just a cold "What can I help you with?" After sitting in the lobby for 30 minutes, I was finally told they "don't do that here but instead I can "be referred to a Vet Clinic in San Antonio". Why not ? Is it because I'm the only Mexican in the Lobby with a Dog that looks like a Drug Dealer would Own? Or because I'm not your Average Joe with a Typical American Household Dog sitting in your lobby waiting for services. So why was I allowed to schedule it? Why confirm it? Why wait until I'm physically sitting in the lobby to say you don't provide that service? I took off work and lost a day's wages for this appointment. That's time and money I don't get back. And instead of owning their mistake, no apology was offered. Instead, I was told they could still do a quick exam -- but I'd have to pay the exam fee -- or I could "be Referred to San Antonio to find someone else" Charging someone after YOUR office scheduled the wrong service is unacceptable. That is poor management, poor communication, and a complete disregard for clients' time. Offering a different service while still charging the exam fee does not correct the original mistake. I did not schedule a general exam -- I scheduled a specific reproductive service that your office infact confirmed would be completed. If this is how they handle basic scheduling, I would strongly question how they handle more serious matters. Do better.

Because PALS people Are nice, they do not try to embarrass folks that come to this nearly free clinic by saying, "you need to buy..." if people had money to burn, they would be at a private vet! They give a long lasting pain shot to dogs during surgery. These folks do an awesome job. I got my lab, Downtown Abbey here. She was found as a pup in downtown Corpus by the big church on the hill. She was not just fed and sheltered. She was given love, walks, cuddles. As are All the pets there. Various Girl Scouts etc come in several days a week for love and walks. Pets and cuddles. Abbey would not be the happy go lucky girl she is, knowing how to sit and stay without having had good care. House trained, too. I love Abbey and PALS!

While I don't blame this clinic for her death since she went septic after surgery, I absolutely blame the overnight staff for how cold and uncaring they were in her final hours. The communication was inconsistent at best and misleading at worst. I was told by a vet tech that she would likely die before any tests were finalized, only for the actual Vet to give a more hopeful update after a glucose treatment and discussion of transferring her to a 24/7 hospital in Fresno. Meanwhile, her actual medical record listed her prognosis as "guarded to poor." Despite knowing how serious her condition was, they refused to allow me to stay with her or figure out a way I could be present if she passed, despite me being the only customer they had in the building at that time. Being given false hope while being kept at a distance during her final moments is something I will never forgive and would warn anyone bringing their pet here this may also be done to you and your beloved pet. When she did pass, the lack of basic compassion became even more obvious. I was given barely any time with her, less than a minute, before being asked, whether I wanted cremation or to take her body. I am assuming something they were rushing since they were nearing their closing time. Again, they spent more time with me discussing payment than they allowed for me to grieve with my dog. Thankfully, I decided to take her body to her regular vet to allow me time to say goodbye. Additionally, what made it worse was the staff in the back laughing and making comments while this was happening. The walls are thin, and with no one else in the building, it was very easy to hear. Hearing that kind of behavior while your dog is dying isn't just unacceptable, it's disturbing. This wasn't my first experience here, and there has consistently been a noticeable focus on pushing expensive treatment plans as my previous time here I overheard one of the workers trying to swindle a man who's cat was sick into paying for any service under the sun. I would strongly advise anyone considering this clinic to question everything and not blindly agree to what's recommended. Losing a pet is devastating on its own. The way this clinic handled it made an already painful experience feel callous, impersonal, and unnecessarily traumatic. Compassion should be the bare minimum in this field, and based on my experience, it was completely absent here.
