This is truly a gem and honestly feels like the last real Russian deli left in SLC. If you grew up with Russian food, this place feels like home the moment you walk in -- the flavors, the products, the atmosphere, everything. The selection is excellent and authentic, and the quality is consistently great. On top of that, the people here are incredibly kind and welcoming. They're happy to help, and yes -- they speak English too, so everyone feels comfortable and welcome. If you're looking for real Russian/Slavic food, nostalgia, or just something genuinely different from the usual grocery experience, Arbat Deli is a must-visit. I've had Arbat bookmarked for a while now, but I'm not often in the area of Salt Lake where it is located, so when I spotted an advertisement for the business while driving down State Street last week I knew it was meant to be that I finally explore it! As others have stated, it is a market attached to a banquet hall/venue, however they now have a door to the store on the backside of the building, facing west. I entered the front reception area, and met a group of people decorating (side note, that space is snazzy, with a chandelier-covered ceiling and some neato lighting). They informed me of the store entrance on the opposite side of the building, but were kind enough to just let me walk through to (what is now) the back door of the market. It is not a particularly large shop, though I think you will find nearly any sort of Eastern European grocery item you are questing for. As always, my first interest was sweets, and they had plenty: a variety of Milka along with other candy bars, cookies, bakery items like cakes, baklava and such, ice cream and other frozen goodies, and lastly, those fantastic bins of bulk chocolates that several of the European stores in SLC offer (how lucky are we to have more than one?!). Additionally, they carry yogurt, cheeses, frozen vegetables, and a very small selection of fresh produce, crackers, chips, and other junk food, canned and jarred goods like olives and grape leaves, and a great assortment of bottled drinks, coffee, and teas. Deli cases line the front along the cash register, filled with every sort of sausage and cured meat. The woman manning (womanning?) the front was so, so friendly and sweet. I had several questions, and she acted as though it was a total pleasure to help me. I left with a bag of assorted bulk candies, and some sunflower seed halva (the best kind, and I'll fight you if you disagree!). It was of the unpackaged variety (they also have a couple brands of packaged sesame seed halva); however, it was precut and housed with the bakery items in a cooler, so the exterior was soft and rather chewy. Mild complaint because I paid $3 for a chunk the size of a small boulder, and I simply scraped that part off, so just FYI. All in all, it's a clean, and attractive space. Massive props to Yelp for pointing me in the direction of this place. Because without Yelp there is NO WAY I'd have known about it. In its current iteration, Arbat is a small market where you can find European goods, with a heavy slant on eastern European, mostly Armenian and Russian with some Mediterranean stuff thrown in for good measure. They used to do a lunch buffet with Armenian food, but now it's just the market and no prepared foods, and the majority of the space is a banquet hall. More on that in a second. Before you go, you must know that even when you find the place, you may not think you've really found it. It's just off of 3300 South on the north side of the road, and its door faces 400 East. There's a sign above the door, so you just open it up and walk in to the market, right? Uh, no. You open that door and you enter the lower portion of their banquet hall. There was a nice gentleman setting up the tables and linens (event tonight?). I opened the door, looked around, and closed the door. Surely I'm not in the right place. After circling the building and being reassured by the red and blue glow of an "Open" sign, I went back in. Then I spotted an open door across the hall and what looked like pantry shelves beyond it. So I put on my big boy pants, marched across the dining floor, and entered the space. Yep. That's it. Let my confused moments serve you to avoid the same. Just walk in and go all the way to the back. It's really not that far and that's really what you're supposed to do. The market portion is very small. A few shelves, a couple of freezers and fridges, and a small island in the middle. However, the place is packed with all kinds of interesting things. I drafted a review on my phone while I was there to highlight a few of the things I found most interesting: Sheets of phyllo Sweet whipped butter Sheep's milk cheese Many other cheeses Meats Dozens of candies (many sold by the pound) Brazilian guarana soda Big bottles of fruit syrups (raspberry, sour cherry) for about $4 Bottled grape leaves Dried apricot paste European sodas And a billion other items that you just won't find anywhere else. Lavash is delicious. Baklava is delicious. Armenian BBQ is delicious. Arbat offers all of these things. Arbat is owned and operated by an Armenian family. They are always welcoming and I have consistently located tasty items that I can't find anywhere else. Have you ever had a russian candy that has a wrapper with a picture of a polar bear on it? You can- if you go to Arbat. I've gone to a few events there- the reception hall is medium sized, and the meals have been similar. Grape leaf dolma, Armenian BBQ, pilaf, grilled eggplant- not gourmet, but a great departure from one's everyday menu. Unless that one is me, because my wife is Armenian, and I eat that stuff all the time. A casserole. Sometimes I just want a casserole. I digress- I'm here at Arbat a few times a month to purchase specialty items that I really can't find anywhere else- like sujuk (Armenian sausage), Kerfir (a yogurt drink that my father in law says will keep you "regular"), and baklava (which is normally awesome). I highly recommend stopping by, purchasing some sujuk, Armenian string cheese, lavash, and maybe some taragon soda. You'll have all the ingredients for an Armenian picnic. read more

I added only 1 star because there isn't an option for zero or negative stars. I was a guest at a wedding on Saturday and the food was disgusting. They served some sort of unidentifiable meat turds with dirty tasting salad and over cooked rice. The bride seemed to be mad about it but we aren't sure what went wrong. read more

As an Armenian, it's awesome finding a cool little shop like this in Salt Lake! It is extremely small, but they pack the stuff in there! Great place to get Armenian string cheese or filo dough. They also have some great chocolates and candies here. It's also attached to their banquet hall which is interesting, last time I was here they were hosting a wedding, and crazy as this sounds, they invited us in!! (We had just left a wedding reception, so we were dressed for the occasion, and they thought we belonged!) So that was a fun experience. I really, really like this place. The food is tasty and you get a wide variety. They offer a buffet from 11 to 3pm Monday thru Friday. And the desserts bring back very fond memories from when I lived in Europe. It's the very best value in the neighbourhood. If you didn't know it was there, you wouldn't know to find it. I took a dozen co-workers there the first time. We like to do buffets and try to different foods. The most discriminating among us were very pleased. Mondays are especially good for some reason. read more

This is a cool place with consideration that it is SLC and not a cosmo vibe. That being said I think it is the best or close to the best Eastern European Market in SLC. It has great pastries, teas and cakes. It is hands down the best in SLC for Russian-Armenian Breads and Cakes. read more
