Massive props to Yelp for pointing me in the direction of this place. Because without Yelp there is NO WAY I'd have known about it. In its current iteration, Arbat is a small market where you can find European goods, with a heavy slant on eastern European, mostly Armenian and Russian with some Mediterranean stuff thrown in for good measure. They used to do a lunch buffet with Armenian food, but now it's just the market and no prepared foods, and the majority of the space is a banquet hall. More on that in a second. Before you go, you must know that even when you find the place, you may not think you've really found it. It's just off of 3300 South on the north side of the road, and its door faces 400 East. There's a sign above the door, so you just open it up and walk in to the market, right? Uh, no. You open that door and you enter the lower portion of their banquet hall. There was a nice gentleman setting up the tables and linens (event tonight?). I opened the door, looked around, and closed the door. Surely I'm not in the right place. After circling the building and being reassured by the red and blue glow of an "Open" sign, I went back in. Then I spotted an open door across the hall and what looked like pantry shelves beyond it. So I put on my big boy pants, marched across the dining floor, and entered the space. Yep. That's it. Let my confused moments serve you to avoid the same. Just walk in and go all the way to the back. It's really not that far and that's really what you're supposed to do. The market portion is very small. A few shelves, a couple of freezers and fridges, and a small island in the middle. However, the place is packed with all kinds of interesting things. I drafted a review on my phone while I was there to highlight a few of the things I found most interesting: Sheets of phyllo Sweet whipped butter Sheep's milk cheese Many other cheeses Meats Dozens of candies (many sold by the pound) Brazilian guarana soda Big bottles of fruit syrups (raspberry, sour cherry) for about $4 Bottled grape leaves Dried apricot paste European sodas And a billion other items that you just won't find anywhere else. Honestly, I was a little overwhelmed even though it's such a small space. Kind of like your first kiss. I loved it. I was confused by it. But I definitely wanted more.

It was enticing that I had to go over after making my purchase. Now I'm a true sucker for a meatball sub so I ordered a half one to go. Damn, you know that you're in for a treat when you open up the package and instantly start looking for a bib. Man it was good! Firm not mushy meatballs, great bread, melted cheese and a fresh marinara that you would swear your grandmother made.

The sandwiches are smaller, more expensive , less variety and the service was SLOW. It was 11:30 am and no lines, about 10 patrons in the whole place. Shocked to see no heavy inch traffic . I had a serving of tuna salad ($9) which was ok and $5 cheaper than a sandwich ($13). Hubby had half a Caputo Sandwich. Fountain drinks were $6!!!! There are no deli salads anymore in the sandwich shop nor in the grocery store section. All the grocery has is imported jars , hard pasta and meats. There is no longer any amazing smells of bread and spices like I've experienced in other I Italian delis and shops in many other cities. If you go there now instead of like in the "old days", which weren't so long ago. you might think it's ok but not anymore in my opinion. Tony used to be behind the counter running the show, fast service lots of people. It sucks now

The bread with just the right amount of rye and moisture, preventing the dryness often present in other delicatessens. This is just the beginning. The meats, the matzo ball soup, the slaw, dressing, and the best dang potato salad we've ever had (seriously, except my wife's, which is killer but is a different kind all together). We loved the staff, who were all genuine, funny, and personal. Great Feldmands reps. And the whole atmosphere with food quotes that explained the attitude of this deli that makes you are part of the building up this experience. We loved the touches from the murals, light fixtures, and decor. It is a distance for us, but one we are willing to travel many more times. .

They do full-service sit-down and to-go orders and have a wide selection of hot and cold sandwiches, bagels, dessert, other New York/Jewish style deli foods, and beer! Sloppy Joe - 5/5 - A large (1/2 lb) double decker sandwich with pastrami and corned beef. There are 3 layers of bread. The meats are tender and flavorful and blend nicely together with the thousand island dressing and slaw between the layers. It also comes with a side, I picked the potato salad which was good too. Not too much mayo but it was still nice and creamy. I just wish I got a little more potato salad to match the portion size of the sandwich! Potato Latke Pancakes - 4.5/5 - They were nice, hot, and crispy. You get 2 pancakes which have a nice thickness to them too. The flavor was good, I just think you should get more sour cream and apple sauce. It comes with a small cup of each, but its not quite enough for the 2 pancakes and its 50c each to get extra! Matzo Ball Soup - 3/5 - The matzo ball and soup broth both had a good flavor. The proportions were just off however, a huge matzo ball but not enough broth. And the broth didn't have enough of chicken meat and veggies (carrot/celery). I basically had 1/2 the matzo ball left over at the end Attempted Murder Imperial Stout Beer - 5/5 - Its a vanilla cinnamon stout. The flavor is subtle but in a good way! Its not sweet, but has a smooth bitterness and mouthfeel with a slight fragrance of the vanilla cinnamon. If you like stout, def give this a try. Its a strong one too, 10.5% ABV! The restaurant was clean, service was good, and there is a good amount of seating and its decorated nicely inside. Def give this place a try!

Head to the back deli upon walking in and you will be asked for your order at the counter. If it's your first visit, just know lunch works a little differently, you walk up to the counter and order from the deli case. We had no idea what we were doing at first, but the woman helping us at the counter was super patient and walked us through everything and gave recommendations. So Nice! I went with the mozzarella-filled risotto ball with marinara and a mozzarella tomato salad. Yes, it was a very mozzarella-heavy lunch choice and I stand by it. Also grabbed a fro-sè and kept it simple with a San Pellegrino. My other half definitely won the "better lunch" competition with egg salad sandwich, roasted brussels sprouts, and the pasta salad combo was ridiculously good. Parking was easier than expected too. There's a side parking lot we totally missed at first, plus a lot of nearby street parking. Definitely one of those places I'd go back to on another sunny day just to sit outside, snack, and slowly sip a fro-sè.
