5 Stars We just got back from a trip through Croatia, Bosnia, and Montenegro and were craving this type of food. A friend suggested we stop in, and I'm really glad we did because this place took me right back to our vacation. First off, I can't believe this spot has been here for a while and I somehow never knew about it. It's a small, cozy place with a great local feel, and you can tell right away that the food is authentic. I ordered the standard Ćevapi, and honestly, it tasted just like what I had while traveling through the Balkans. Fresh, flavorful, comforting, and exactly what I was hoping for. You can tell this is food made with pride and tradition. The owner was incredibly friendly, and we ended up having a great conversation about the food, Bosnia, and his story. After hearing he's originally from Bosnia and brought his family recipes with him, it all made sense why the food felt so authentic. Places like this are special because they're not trying to be trendy -- they're simply serving real food, made the right way. If you enjoy Balkan food, or even if you've never tried it, give this place a shot. Great food, kind people, and a hidden gem in the area. This is one of our all time favorite places to drop by once in a few months. My kids actually crave their food :D It's a small restaurant, but their food is S-O good! They have daily specials, or you can pick from their regular menu. The service is very good. They come and check on you even when they are completely full. I had the lamb here, and I have to say, I'm very picky about lamb since it's one of my favorite foods. This was hands-down some of the best lamb I've had in a long time. Perfectly cooked, flavorful, tender, and fresh, honestly, it was fire. The portion size was also impressive, especially considering it was under $15. I was shocked at how much food I got for the price. A lot of my friends from the ED are Bosnian, and they've been telling me how authentic this place is and how much it reminds them of home. I finally decided to give it a try, and they weren't kidding, the food here feels like it was made with love and tradition. You can taste the authenticity in every bite. The atmosphere inside was cozy and welcoming. From the moment I walked in, the smell of fresh food hit me, and it immediately made me hungry. The customer service was just as good as the food, friendly, attentive, and it felt like they really cared that I was having a great experience. I left completely satisfied and already planning my next visit. There are so many other dishes I want to try, but the lamb definitely set the bar high. I've driven by here a thousand times and finally was able to eat here today. First off there is no parking. Well that's not true, there are four spots. There is also a small shared parking lot. Walking into the restaurant you notice the small seating area. You can sit anywhere you want, if there is a seat available. It was pretty busy, a lot of guys were watching the soccer game on the big screen TV. Lots of main dishes to choose from, they all looked good. (Pictures of menu items are on a rotating screen) I just got the special. It came out fairly quickly, piping hot. Generous serving size. Very tasty. Pretty laid back atmosphere, but on the loud side. The service was absolutely awful! Our server was rude, not helpful at all and never even asked if our food was good and if we needed anything. He looked at our empty water glasses several times and failed to even acknowledge them. Once we got our food it was not good all of it was what tasted and looked very under done. We live about 5 minutes from the restaurant and by the time we got home it was already coming out of me. My tummy was very upset for the rest of the day. I have been wanting to review Cafe on Main ever since I got onto yelp. Here it goes. I am guessing this is only place in Salt Lake City that offers Balkan cuisine. Its a nice, quiet place, run by a friendly couple. Whenever I have been here, I have seen a fair share of natives. A good sign of the food, I suppose. My favorite dish is the chicken gulas. Its a spicy chicken stew that is served with rice (see photo). Very tasty, feels and tastes very much like a homemade dish. I have also tried their chicken kebabs which comes with rice or fries. I feel they fry the kebabs in order to serve it quicker. The chicken tends to be tough. I like the stew better. If you are fond of beef/veal, then your options open up considerably. Not so for me. They also have daily specials listed in their menu. Like chicken gulas is a Wednesday (if I remember correctly) special. But they are usually flexible with this list and can accomodate your request for another day's special. Desserts - tried the baklava. One baklava would be enough to clog the arteries of two people. I won't be ordering it again. But there are other options available, maybe some other time. The food is really cheap. One entree will only set you back by $6, and I am talking about dinner prices here. How cool is that! Oh yes, you get to watch European football on TV. Yes, the real football. Balkan cuisine. You know, that sort of umbrella term that covers the Serbs and Turks and Romanians and Hungarians and pretty much everyone else in that region. I'm hardly an expert, but Cafe On Main bills itself as a Balkan joint, and I saw lots of Balkan-y dishes there. Let's start with the daily specials. Each day of the week, there's a pre-determined special. The day I was there, a Thursday, it was an either/or. There was a delicious looking stew, or moussaka. I had just burned through a pot of soup I made that was waaaay too big in the last few days, so stew wasn't on my brain. But my dining companion went for the moussaka. It was delicious, as I now know after forcing him to let me sample his dish. Sometimes moussaka can be too dry, but not in this case. Moist, and the flavor of the meat and the potatoes mixed nicely, with a dollup of sour cream on the top. I ordered the chicken wiener schnitzel plate. I dunno about them fries, but I think you should do yourself a favor and get the rice if it's offered. It's aromatic, not super dense, and great change of pace from other sides. As for the schnitzel itself, I can't complain. It was finely breaded, thinly pressed, and not oily. All in all, that plate of food was enjoyable, top to bottom. Here's what you need to know about the actual dining experience. It ain't much on the outside. It's all by itself there on the corner of 2700 South and Main, and you'll pass right by if you blink. It looks run down. The interior is kept up nicely, and there's a big ol' TV (presumably to watch soccer matches as others have mentioned) and pictures of all the dishes on the wall. You walk in, and they seat you, menu you, serve you, etc. But you walk up to the counter to pay. Parking sucks. Like, sucks sucks. It's jammed in there, and tiiiiight. And there are about 2.25 parking spaces. So get there early, or get creative. But give them a try. The owner was super nice, the food was surprisingly good, and I have no reason not to go again. read more

Not bad. I probably need to explore the menu a bit more. I have no idea how to pronounce or spell what I ordered but it was basically a beef patty in a delicious pita bread. The seasoning was great. I was the only person in the place speaking English. I have idea what the other language was. But it felt pretty authentic. They don't rush you out. You have to ask to be let out. Very casual. Small Balkan restaurant serving fairly authentic dishes. I've been multiple times over the years and usually go for the sudzukice (sausages), but their schniztel and Dolma are also pretty good. I'm no expert on food from this area, but the flavor is nevertheless really good. Some of the dishes are somewhat "Americanized" being served with french fries, though I don't think that detracts from the flavor of the main part of the dish. The menu has various Balkan and Bosnian dishes, as well as some Ameircan ones (Hamburger). Perhaps the most glaring issue for some may be the price of some of the menu items (running nearly to $10 for a platter), but I think the quality and amount of food is more than worth it. Being very small restaurant, the service is fairly good, quick, and colloquial (especially if you are from the same or a similar region or come often). The down side to being small, however, is that, if there are a lot of people, there may not be many places left to sit. Also, parking may be an issue as the restaurant only has a handful of parking spaces, though you can usually park on the adjacent street or the street just south of the restaurant.The restaurant itself is nice, clean, and quaint. If you're craving something a bit different with a Mediterranean flare, you should definately give Cafe on Main a try. read more

This place is awesome! Whenever I'm in town, I try to make a stop. My usual is the sandwich that has the little sausages in it (Chevapi... I think) with a salad (Balkan salad, maybe?). The sausages taste as good as the kebapi I used to eat in Skopje, but the star is the bread. It is so fresh, dense, and flavorful! The salad is essentially just tomatoes, onions, and cheese, but it's always delicious (though, I'm usually in town during the summer when tomatoes are fresh... not sure how good it would be in the off season).
