I am one to definitely sing the praises of Arbor Hospice. My husband was under their Care for many months and received nothing except the best from his fantastic caregiver team. My husband suffered from Alzheimer's disease for over six years. With the help of his team at Arbor Hospice I was able to keep him at home the entire time. For this, from the bottom of my heart, I will forever be indebted to this amazing company so thank you , thank you, thank you for being there through the good, the bad, and the not so good moments of our journey. We have lots of great memories with the amazing team of people that came through our front door each week. I want to sing the praise of each and every staff member that spent their days not only guiding us down the pathway but answering the millions of questions about this treacherous disease. Hospice of Michigan in one of the best hospice companies in the area they do not say no to their patients because it's based off nonprofit. They truly have some of the sweetest kind of staff that come out anytime to see you 24 seven I highly recommend this company For its professionalism urgency when something is needed and great care that they provide. They raise money for hospice kids because Medicare doesn't provide it and they do such a great job to make sure they provide service for everyone even those who can't afford it. read more

Our experience has been really rough. They're not responsive to our requests and the situation with getting enough meds has been a real challenge. We are being given half to a third of what we were getting from the hospital. I thought that their specialty is pain management. During the first trip from Arbor Hospice, the nurse forgot that my husband had a drain tube and had to come back to clean it. Worse yet, she was asking me questions on doing the flush. I know that people are understaffed these days, but still. This is end of life care and it should be more diligent. read more

Used to work for this company as on call RN. They have been bought out by Hospice of Michigan. Noticed a dramatic increase in under treatment of symptoms. Was advised I was taking to long to do on call visits. Because of under treatment of symptoms (after being bought out by Hospice of Michigan) on call visits required a long time to get symptoms under control. Would strongly suggest getting another hospice. read more

I hope you never need hospice care for anyone in your family. But if you do, Arbor Hospice (with several locations in the Ann Arbor area) does a wonderful job in very tough times. When it was time to choose home hospice care for my ailing father, we talked to a range of places. Some wanted to immediately pull his life support, some wanted to stop feeding him, some just didn't seem to know what they were talking about. But from the time Nate, from Arbor Hospice, walked into the room, his reassuring presence comforted our family, and their willingness to continue with some of the care made our choice of them, easy. They were at the house when they brought my dad home from the hospital, having arranged for all the equipment to be delivered the night before including everything my dad would need to be comfortable during his last days. The hospice nurse was available 24/7, and came to the house a couple of times a week to follow up on the paid nurses aides that we also had. Linda was great with my dad and mom helping them with this end stage of my dad's life. When they had to have the tough conversations with us, they didn't push . . .merely suggesting what alternate options we had and allowing us to make the final decisions. And in the end, upon learning of my father's death, they called all the appropriate parties and comforted my family in the process. Hospice care has an air of finality about it. But with Arbor Hospice it's more an air of compassion and caring . . .and that means everything when it involves a loved ones last days. read more

My grandmother was at Arbor Hospice for her end of life. Great, caring nurses and staff. Very happy with the care she received there.

We had a terrible experience. Hospice removed my father from his home knowing that he had a day to live, but told us that he would return " in a few days". They essentially OD patients on morphine once in their facility. We were uable to say goodbye to him because the morphine had grossly over-sedated him. My understanding is that this is standard operating procedure for hospice. When at home, the visting nurses were uncaring and incompetent. I know that itus a tough job and so hospice would not attract talented and bright staff. Hospice of Ann Arbor is a shameful operation. read more

I want to start off with every nurse/aid that came in to our home were extremely friendly and caring. My father was diagnosed with terminal cancer and we were referred to Arbor Hospice. When his declined had started he went very quickly (less than 2 weeks) The nurses tried to prepare us for whats to come and what to do. There is no way to prepare you. They made everything look so easy but after they sat for an hour typing on their tablet and got my dads meds in order they were off and I was on my own to care for him. Nothing they showed me worked very well, with no experience its almost impossible to care for someone that is dying. The nurse continue to tell me my dad was not in the finally stages yet and would not listen to me that he had experienced and is experiencing all that is in the book they give you and everything I had read online. She had also had said to not push meds on him if he does not want them. I know she was doing what she was taught or thought was best but we knew he would not last much longer. My dad is very stubborn and as soon as the nurse left he became unbearable insisting on getting out of bed and try to do something to do anything. He could not walk on his own let alone do the simplest of tasks. He did not even know who anyone was anymore. I tried to give him his anxiety medicine and he would just spit it out. I did not force it on him, he had becoming unable to swallow. After a horrible day I was able to get the anxiety medicine to calm him. I dont even remember how I eventually was able to get him the medicine, I tried everything. They give you a sheet and tell you if any of these things happen to call but when you call they are ABSOLUTELY NO HELP AT ALL! Sometimes they would send a nurse but most of the time they were just like yeah that is normal. They also tell you if things change and you want to hire a nurse or put him a facility we can help you. They made it sound like no problem. Not a 2 week process! Everything they had told us had been a bunch of bull. My dad passed the next day while we were waiting on a nurse. We basically had to beg for someone to come. He had been doing what is called the death gurgle and they would not listen to us and believe that we knew that he didn't have much time. They kept telling us this whole time he could still live 1-2 months and did not listen to everything we had been experiencing the last past 2 weeks. The final stage only lasted hours, just the day before the nurse told us 2 weeks to a month. I know there is no way to tell and no one knows but if only they would of listened to us and maybe had us practice some of the things they were telling us to do that would of been extremely helpful. We needed to hire a nurse weeks ago to help us through this process by this time it was too late. The worst of it all was after my dad had passed we had to take the hospital bed apart to get the bed out of the living room and they did not pick it up for 6 days! They said they had been trying to get a hold of us -they did not. The nurse we had was so nice and was wonderful but if everyone could of just listen to us and not lead us to believe things such as no problem we could just move him to a facility if it gets to much for you. It would have been so much easier on us! It was a horrible experience and I do not suggest for anyone to go through it alone with Arbor Hospice. I wish we would of hired a nurse and checked around instead of just listening to the hospitals referral. read more

I left another review for the Arbor Hospice Residence; this is for the home care staff. When my mother's cancer returned, we signed her up with Arbor Hospice, initially for care at home. We had used a different hospice agency before when my stepfather passed away, and while they were fine, we had heard great things about Arbor and decided to go with them. I'm so glad we did. From the beginning, the staff were compassionate and competent. They were available 24/7 and offered excellent advice as well as hands-on help when needed. When Mom's pain (from cancer) wasn't as well controlled as any of us wanted, they took her to the residence for almost a week until they made her comfortable. After that, she was discharged to a nursing home. They continued to oversee her care at the nursing home and became very dear to her. In particular, Darla, the social worker, went above and beyond the call of duty to advocate for my mom when she felt her symptoms weren't being managed well enough. I referred to her as my mom's champion. We will be everlastingly grateful to her for all she did. Also, Mary, Mom's nurse, frequently went the extra mile to take care of Mom. They really cared about her, and that was a huge comfort to us during this terribly difficult time. Eventually we did move her to the Arbor Residence, which is outstanding (see my review under that listing), and she had a peaceful, painless death with family surrounding her. I can't say enough about how much we appreciated Arbor Hospice; they were truly a Godsend to us this past year. They do the work of angels. read more

My wife was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in July. We were referred to Arbor Hospice three weeks ago. In that time they have dropped off a bed and oxygen. They've also had an aid come three times. She is great. On the other hand, the remainder of their service is horrible. The nurses are rude. They're callous and have told my stepdaughter not to worry if her mom doesn't want to take meds. Their basic message is " she's as good as dead, why bother. " Yesterday my daughter was told in front of my wife that we shouldn't worry about feeding her because it "just makes a mess when she dies." Nurse visits are routinely canceled ( which may be a good thing). Doctors are impossible to reach. Arbor Hospice is about to discover that she's not just some Medicaid patient that they can ignore, but the wife of someone who has been a lawyer in this state for the last 40 years. My next call is to the licensing agency. After that, if need be, I can find my way to a court to deal with these problems. Be warned by our experience. read more

Terrible working environment. Please do not waste your time applying or working for this once reputable agency. Nicole L. RN (Rapid response supervisor) failed to tell me that she was building cliques not teams. Once hired I was responsible for Hospice of Michigan and Arbor patients and was asked to wear two different badges depending on which patient I was seeing. Apparently full disclosure is frowned upon. I was told "to stop talking to the families for so long" and to keep moving as talking is a waste of time and social work can talk to them. I left after 2 months as I realized this was not about patient care but about financial gain for the company or companies ? Thankfully there are amazing hospices in the area where they appreciate compassionate care. read more

Both my mother and father spent their last days in the Arbor Hospice residence. Now my brother is there. When I visit him, it almost feels like "home" . The facility is beautiful, bright and clean. And the staff beyond wonderful. I can not say enough good things about Arbor Hospice. It is everything one could want for end of life care. read more

I think of my lovely mother always, but even more so now during the holidays. We used Arbor Hospice for in-home care and during her last month in an assisted living facility. She received prompt and adequate care at home. However, once she moved to the assisted living, it became more difficult to get in touch with the staff, receive return calls, answers to questions and received equipment needed. I was very dismayed by this. But the most disheartening moment was when my mother passed away. I heard from no one at Arbor Hospice. No phone call, no card, no flowers........nothing. They knew of her passing. Out of curiousity, I contacted Arbor Hospice. After apologizing to me, I was told that the problem was with medicare....?....... They made it seem as though they no longer had our records so therefore, they did not have any contact information. Very shameful, detestable and hurtful. I will never forget that. read more
