ARCANE ESCAPE ROOMS: A DETAILED REVIEW.
Five more minutes please?
I went here today with two other escape room enthusiasts simply because we want to try all escape rooms whenever we can. So when I learned that there is an escape room within near-driving distance, I knew I had to come and try. Try we did, and Arcane did not disappoint.
We rented out the whole room because we weren't really comfortable playing with strangers, but if you're okay with that, you should! I believe the room holds a maximum of 8 persons. You can play with just your own smaller group if you book the entire room. Parking wasn't bad. I actually thought it will be difficult to find a spot unless it's nighttime but I was wrong. Our appointment was at 4:30 PM. We had trouble finding the actual location (our navigator's mistake LOL), but the parking was a breeze. Arcane is part of a huge structure, and therefore has several parking spaces. The room is located on the topmost floor.
When we arrived, Scott greeted us and had us sign the waiver, which you usually do in any escape rooms. He was very friendly and didn't treat us like we were "just another batch of customers." He ushered us to the briefing room. This was where he explained the rules and gave us a little backstory. I felt this part could have been done better. He read the backstory from a tablet, and while we understood what he said, I felt it would have given a much powerful and convincing effect if employees had the lines memorized and narrated it with conviction to the players to drive the backstory greatly. (Suggestion: Employees be "in character" the moment the customers walk in [the lobby; if not, the briefing room. We actually thought it would have been cooler if Scott or any of the employees wore a lab coat [I'll stop here so I won't spoil]. Let the customers feel the theme the moment they first walk in.). Overall, I actually felt the briefing part to be successful as the rules were all clear before we played, such as the padlocks with the word "NO," etc.
After the briefing room, we were then directed to the video room. We were showed a presentation that elaborated on the theme and revealed the backstory more. (Suggestion: The projected screen was a few inches high. If you could lower it a little to make it more comfortable to customers because we need to tilt our head up in the entire duration of the video.). After the video presentation, we went inside the puzzle room.
I actually felt the room was sufficient and spacious enough for people, even groups of 8, to walk around and search for stuff. Our room was a 50-minute escape. What I liked most about this room was it's both a linear and a non-linear puzzle. I won't go into details, but you would know what I'm talking about when you play the room. I also liked that this puzzle required verbal communication; and I do mean TALKING was a necessity at one point. Not a lot of escape rooms I've been to had that specific element, and I was glad Arcane had it in theirs. It was actually an essential step to the escape.
The puzzles were challenging and fun! We were stumped at one point, but figured out a way later. As I mentioned earlier, the room was spacious so people can focus on one stuff independently, and come together when needed. Moreover, the puzzles weren't extremely difficult that make players lose interest like in some other escape rooms I've been in.
Suggestion: I would love to see the room match the backstory/setting the moment I walk in the puzzle area, rather than merely see a room with puzzles. It was done okay, but I believe something to tie the room and the theme together could still be added, and make the room more immersive the very second the players walk in the game room. Since the room already had some stuff/items that were in there for display-purposes only, it would have been cooler to see display-items that actually go perfectly well with the theme instead. Leave the puzzles as they are (they're really brilliant!), but maybe change the non-puzzle items to things that would gel the room and the backstory together.
When we were done, Scott went in and we did a little talk about the room and Arcane. What I liked most about Arcane was that they truly built rapport with their customers. It's one thing to have puzzle rooms and deliver, and another to satisfy the customers in terms of service. He explained some things to us, and shared that this is a fairly new and independent company. KUDOS AND AMAZING! The work put into this looked like it was a corporation of some sort.
The immersion didn't end until we left the place. They had a unique ending!
We will definitely go back to Arcane (I hope to be there for October's new room), and I highly recommend this place to first-timers and escape room enthusiasts alike. I live nearby but even if I'm from downtown or wherever, Arcane is truly worth the drive if you ask me.
