Fantastic meal with attentive and friendly service. Each meal was bursting with unique flavor (photos included). What we most appreciated was that no matter who brought our next dish (food runner, server, and manager all stopped by our table) the dish was presented and each component was highlighted. When dishes like Arden's, with multiple flavors on one plate, are served, it is such a great service step to remind diners of each component when the dish arrives. We really valued that. On a recent visit we tried just about everything on the menu and it was great. The menu is a bit limited in size, but they utilize top ingredients and cook them very well - or not as in the case of salads and beef tartare. Cocktails are great and the wine list is not huge but exceedingly well chosen, though in this case one member of my party had brought bottles of Leroy and Comtes Lafon so we didn't order from the wine list but there were a ton of great options. Service is extremely professional, even for my late arriving table that was easily the last in the restaurant on a Friday night. And I understand the kitchen has had some changes but is currently staffed by some amazingly talented individuals who will continue Arden's run as one of the best restaurants in Portland. Excellent food and wine. Would have given 5 stars, but the service was well below expectations. We arrived and were seated at our table, and no one spoke to us or acknowledged our presence for 10 minutes. We almost left, because we felt ignored until my partner got up to order us a drink at the bar. Our server was then upset with us, and wasn't friendly for a majority of our service. Super disappointed that we weren't treated well, especially given the premium nature of the restaurant, and are unlikely to return because of it. read more

WOW, what a great dining experience! The food was wonderful, I had the Hamichi collar, the leek and potato pasta and a dessert I can't remember what it's called, but all the food was wonderful and I really appreciated the service. Each dish was explained in great detail and they were there for everything. My silverware was replaced after every dish and I was never left waiting, but best of all, the dishes came out slowly, I was never rushed. We had a wonderful experience at Arden! My girlfriend and I came in for a 9pm reservation. We were promptly greeted by the host and they offered coat check! We were seated and was welcomed by our server within a few minutes after our host seated us. Taylor was an amazing server! Very knowledgeable about the dishes, ingredients and just one of those employees that you can tell he loves his work. Big Thank you to Taylor for his hospitality and great service! Arden strikes me as a restaurant that wants to achieve more than they are able. 3 of the 4 dishes we're representative of what was promised, though the pasta was waaaaay too mushy. The service was also lacking as food arrived first to nearby diners who came later than us, and some dishes ran out befoe they could arrive to our table. They also need to put an 'occupied' hardware on their bathroom. I couldn't tell if it was occupied or not so made my way 3 blocks to a local bar that had one. Seems like a lot of work for an evening that should have been a birthday celebration. No amount of free alcohol could cover up the obvious lack of expertise. STAY AWAY! There are better places in Portland that cost less. read more

Came here with a couple friends with the intentions of just sampling some wine, but ended up having a great meal out of it. The wine selection here is pretty good. I'm not a wine expert by no means at all, but our server, Alex, has a great knowledge of wine and can find the right type for you. He also suggested some great "snacks" for us to munch on. I must admit, their bread and butter plate was super delicious and addicting that I had to get a second order of it. The bread is from Little T Bakers and the butter is made in house. Its amazing how something so simple can be so tasty. We also got a smoked red and chioggia beet dish, a red minzuna and charred strawberry salad dish that was unique, but worked well. Our main dish was this big piece of ribeye (was not really on the menu) that tasted absolutley amazing. It was perfectly cooked and the meat was super tender that it could be easily cut with any knife. This was definitely a great meal experience. Our server Alex was superb and wonderful. Super special spot - it's definitely a special occasion place and my husband said the halibut was among the best he'd ever had. I took off one star because the liver pasta was WAY over-salted, almost couldn't eat it, and I was disappointed that the morel mushrooms in the pasta seemed to be cut up. Morel mushrooms are my favorite but they are best whole in my opinion. Those two points aside, it was wonderful and beautifully presented. We would come back! read more

This is a posh, sparse wine bar perfect for date night. Every dish was unique, fun, and worth the expense. I recommend the soba noodles and the trout plate. We loved the guava jellies. The host was great, but our server seemed checked out. I would have preferred more engagement and wine conversation, especially since we came to sample wines. One of the best meals I've had in Portland. The food was very good and the meal was memorable. I went a couple of weeks ago with my family and everyone was raving about the food. I took off 1 star for a couple of reasons: 1) Many of the dishes were spicy which could be a problem for some diners and limit the options from the already small menu and 2) There were very few non alcoholic beverage options for non-drinkers which is disappointing. 3) The portions are small. Our party of 3 shared a salad, app and bread and then each had an entree and dessert. I was still hungry after the meal. Note: The restaurant is small so make sure you have a reservation. Walk-ins (especially on a weekend) are going to be out of luck. read more

Four of us had dinner on December 30. It was a prix-fixe meal. After the salad, everything went downhill. We had a pasta dish that was terrible because of extreme levels of salt. The next course was a half-chicken. Again, an extraordinary amount of salt, plus thighs that were not thoroughly cooked, ruined the meal. The dessert was sweet corn ice cream and it had un-popped carmel corn in it that did some dental damage. I wish I could give a better rating because the server was very nice, the wine was good. The final bill was over $1,000! We won't be back. read more

I am currently on a pretty strict diet but my gf and I had one dinner to get a real meal in and I am so glad we chose this place. Not only was the service great but the food was excellent. For me, the star was the burrata and squash in smoked brown butter. It was killer. I could have eaten just that and been happy. I had the halibut and she had the chicken and we loved the food. We had the lamb neck (yes, I was freaked out about trying it, but daaaaamn [**insert Ice Cube and Chris Tucker in Friday here**]) was it delicious), duck for two, burrata/squash and pierogis. Mediocre experience at best. The host who greeted us was friendly and outgoing and exuberant, we loved him. Our server asked if we'd been before, explained the menu, then left. Didn't ask if we wanted a drink, which we'd already decided upon. The Octopus starter was tasty, but the portion of the actual octopus was incredibly small for $26. I know octopus is a pricey item, but this was a single tentacle not even 5" long. Two veg/salad items were fine, but also small. The Duck for Two entree was great, and actually priced well for the amount of food and tasted fantastic. The food runners and server mumbled their way through the description of each dish. We never understood anything they said and since we weren't left with a menu, it was easy to not know what we were eating, given the more esoteric ingredients. Our server had no personality and did nothing over bare minimum. For food with this price point, even a touch of enthusiasm would've been nice. To her credit, she recommended and described the Zweigelt glass pour well and it was quite nice with the duck. The ambiance was difficult. We were in the corner on the grey walled area. My lady was against the wall while I faced her and I could not hear her. I kept asking her to speak up, but the acoustics were awful. I could hear everything the kitchen was saying and doing, but little the person a foot in front of me was saying. The music wasn't loud, it was just bad open kitchen acoustics. The lights were quite bright. The open kitchen lighting blows out everything. My lady said I was back lit the whole time due to facing the open kitchen. The place could have been romantic or intimate but just felt too bright and missing the marks. The basque cheesecake was actually the highlight of the meal. We left paying $110 per person after tip, and the dessert made the best impression. Not a good sign. We are both servers, and honestly don't expect too much when we dine out. We get how it all works, how things can happen. But honestly, I can't see why I'd come back here. For the price, I could have a dozen other places that offer a much more memorable experience, be it ambiance, acoustics, food quantity, or staff presence. We left not full and letdown by a forgettable meal at one of the highest prices we've ever paid. read more

Arden was the highlight of my recent trip to Portland, absolutely everything about the experience was excellent and I cannot wait to return. The wine we had was all local and so good, decent prices too! But the food is what really stands out, the chef here really knows flavors. Everything sounded unexpectedly paired but felt like the flavors just belonged together. Every dish we tried was better than the next. The portions are meant for sharing and sampling multiple dishes which was perfect in addition to the wine. The service was great and our server had some fantastic recommendations. 10/10!! read more

Had dinner here last night and was a little disappointed. It was advertised to be a fine dining/experience. We made reservations for 8:30 and were seated near the entry - although it was an essentially empty restaurant on a Saturday night. We ordered a bottle of Lambrusco and 2 salads - neither of which were anything to write home about, we also ordered the shisito peppers and a squid and clam dish as well as the salmon. The salmon was very very over cooked with no flavor. The squid and clam dish was in a peanut sauce and was also over cooked, the squid pieces felt rubbery. The presentation of the dishes was also not impressive. Not sure if this is because they had a 8:30 Saturday dinner reservation or this is the norm. Would definitely not go back. read more

Our experience with Arden was underwhelming. They have a very nice staff who are attentive and friendly. The silverware, dinnerware, and fresh flowers were a very nice touch. The vibe is elegant, yet hipster; however, it's really small inside and the room can become so loud it's difficult to have a conversation without raising your voice quite a bit. Due to the small size of the restaurant, a large crowd grew at the entrance because there is no place to wait for a table. We ordered the dining month special and we were disappointed that the advertised wine pairing on the website was a false advertisement. The food was underwhelming and there was a miso theme to every dish. If you ordered the salad, salmon, and dessert they all had miso in it. I appreciate that miso is a fermented food that is full of probiotics, vitamins, and minerals. I suppose using a single ingredient in diverse ways is pretty clever; although, when used repeatedly the miso flavor became tiresome and the saltiness was overwhelming. Lastly, I prefer my salmon medium-well and the waiter didn't offer a suggestion on how it was cooked, it was seared on the outside and raw on the inside. Maybe this was my fault and I should have asked for it to be cooked more well done. On the bright side, the presentation of the food was wonderful and my water glass was never empty. read more

My friend and I decided to try Arden during the Restaurant Month as I visit Portland for work. We walked into the establishment at around 6PM at night and was seated at the chef table, aka the bar table right in front of the open kitchen. We took a look at the menu and decided to get the 3 course prefixed menu. The establishment feel cozy and comfortable and it's also a plus when the staff members are attentive and friendly. As mentioned from above, we ordered the 3 course prefixed menu which are as the following - Winter green, Marinated red beets, sesame dukkah, with miso vinaigrette o This is probably one of the best salads I've ever had. The miso vinaigrette has the nature salty flavor from how it's produce and the flavor is well balanced. Overall, personally I think this dish outshined the main entre course! - King Salmon o The chef did crisp up the salmon skin but the skin still a bit soggy and this may due to the broth that was placed underneath the salmon? Or the way it's executed? End of the day, the dish was okay and we can taste the nature salmon flavor but it's a bit bland since it's a bit under seasoned in my opinion - Filet of beef o The beef filet is a bit underwhelming. As the chef did sear the stead first then sliced and placed into the oven to cook it a bit longer. I am not sure what kind of method this is. But usually you don't place the steak back to the oven after you sliced the steak. The steak was under seasoned just like the salmon and the vegetable is overly oiled. But one great thing about this dish is the mashed potato. The mashed potato is well seasoned and has a great taste. - Brownie o There is not much to say about the brownie. I do like the fact that it's not overly sweet like most places. The black sesame ice cream was delicious and the miso-vanilla just test like vanilla We also ordered half dozen of oysters as well. The oysters are sweet and don't really need much seasoning (lime & carrot spice they have?). If you can taste the sweetness from the oyster it means it's fresh and it's not store in the fridge for extensive period. Overall, I do think this place is a bit over priced for the products that were delivered. As the main entre were not properly executed or seasoned. I am not sure if it will be different when the Restaurant Month is end. As the chefs may be a bit overwhelm with the volume of customer due to Restaurant Month. But that shouldn't be an excuse if anything. Since restaurant month should be the time to show your best to get more regular customer on a regular basis. I would say give this place a try and let the chefs know how you think. So they can keep true to their food while adjust to larger population's taste? read more

My husband and I just went to Arden for their Portland dining month menu. We had the trout Crudo, the petite fillet, add on pasta, and added on the sesame coconut ice cream to the third course. Everything was beyond amazing! The flavors where complex and well balanced, and the plating was gorgeous. Our servers were friendly, helpful and very knowledgeable about wine pairings. This place was super cute, and awesome I really enjoyed the Pdx dining month and also having the option to add on more food was perfect. There wasn't a bad dish with everything I had ,and everything was presented very elegant and beautiful. We sat at the counter and had great service and all the staff was very nice and friendly. I had the tuna crudo, a lite and delicious first dish very fresh clean flavors perfect. The salmon was also my favorite with the light broth and salmon cooked beautiful. I highly recommend adding the pasta, and the cheese as it adds to a perfect complete and delicious meal. Dessert wow I was so impressed with the creativity and but the all around amazing flavors I throughly enjoyed both that's the fun thing about Pdx dining month is you so with someone else u can try everything which is like a 10 course meal !!! All around the food and service was excellent. We had two starters, a mid-course and the duck for two. Everything we had was wonderful, well prepared and presented. It was a very elevated dining experience in a casual setting, exactly what us Portlanders love about our food scene. A few people in reviews here complained/commented on portions being small and the price paid. Let's face it, food and staff costs are skyrocketing. Given that my spouse and I had four glasses of white wine, followed by a just over $100 bottle of red (our liquor was 2/3 the bill) with a total bill before tip totaling at $295, it was a "very fair price" point for such an enjoyable meal. Beautiful space, with extended outdoor seating, which I love. Menu is great, but a bit pricy for the portions. Typically, my boyfriend and try to share a plate or order a few small items.
