Celebrated a 50th birthday party here for a family member, because it was his favorite restaurant, at this time. Between all of us, we probably tried many of the items on the menu. Hubby had the Chicken Enchilada. He said it was OK. I had the Pan Seared Trout. I didn't care for the Broccolini, so I asked to substitute, and the asparagus was an option. Everything else was delicious, as expected here, since this is our third visit here. We also ordered appetizer and sweets! All were very good! Many of the dishes were great. Environment was great. Fireside sits on a busy corner on NW 23rd. There's outdoor seating, so like many places in Portland, well-behaved dogs are welcome. What sets Fireside apart is their servers. They are genuinely happy. I've been here maybe a dozen times in the last two years, and the serving crew is always top notch. The cocktails are consistently great too. So, that goes a long way for repeat business! The food is usually excellent, and a recent brunch was outstanding (see pics). Occasionally, there has been a near miss with too much salt on the Brussels sprouts or other minor infraction like that. All in all, it has displaced Serrato as my "go to" to meet up with friends. I've only eaten outside, so I have no idea what the inside experience is like. Outside, it's a sheltered patio with heaters if needed and a few small tables against the building as well. Bonus for this area in general is that it's a great place to walk around and window shop, and it's relatively close to the Japanese and Rose Gardens (by car). read more

Fireside is such a cute spot with a cozy atmosphere, and I really enjoyed the overall vibe. It's a great place to grab a drink and hang out with friends. That said, my experience wasn't perfect. I was accidentally charged the wrong price for my Mexican lager, and it was difficult to get the bartender's attention to have it corrected. It was a busy afternoon since it was the holiday weekend and the day before the Fourth of July, so I understand they had a lot going on. Overall, I still enjoyed my visit and think it's a charming place. I just hope the pricing is a little more accurate and the service is a bit more attentive next time. read more

Came here on a Thursday for a friend's birthday dinner. She had a reservation so we were seated right away. Our server was very friendly and attentive and was patient with us as we waited for all of our party to arrive and to order. The vibe of the place is cozy with fireplaces, lighting, and the intentional bar and dining room seating arrangements. There was also coveted outdoor seating on the side perfect for summer. It was a beautiful sunny day so there were a good amount of people coming in and out. We got drinks and most of their appetizers to share among our group. My favorite was the crispy Brussels sprouts and the crab cakes. The bread was a little more charred than preferred the olive butter was tasty. The steak kebob and Mac and cheese (not pictured) were nice and filling as well. I did not see much of a dessert menu but maybe we had to ask but Papa Haydn is just a block down so we went there after instead. When I write reviews--and I do so often--I make a point of recognizing businesses for what they do well. I genuinely enjoy giving owners the credit they deserve. Unfortunately, this experience left me with mixed feelings, and I feel it's important to share what happened. On Saturday, July 2, between approximately 2:30 and 3:00 p.m., my husband and I decided to try this restaurant. After walking up and down NW 23rd looking for some of the familiar places we used to enjoy, we came across this restaurant. The atmosphere was inviting, and it was bustling with customers, which seemed like a good sign. The hostess greeted us and asked where we would like to sit. Since it was a beautiful, breezy afternoon, we asked to be seated outside to enjoy the lively atmosphere on NW 23rd. There were several tables available on the covered patio to the left of the restaurant. I asked if we could have the corner table along that row. The hostess responded rather abruptly, saying, "We can't have that one." I asked if those tables were reserved, and she simply replied, "No," without offering any explanation. I assumed she might just be having a difficult day. Instead, we were seated on the opposite side of the patio along the building and were given our menus. I couldn't help but feel that the interaction was unnecessarily dismissive. Having lived in Portland for 42 years, I had never experienced this kind of response to such a simple request. Out of curiosity, I later asked our server whether the tables across from us had been reserved, since there were still four or five empty tables in that section. She kindly checked with the hostess and returned to explain that we had been seated where we were because it offered "more shade." Personally, I didn't find that explanation convincing. The covered patio also provided plenty of shade and, in my opinion, offered a more pleasant dining experience with fewer people walking past. In fact, none of the tables in that section were occupied for the entire duration of our meal. Despite that disappointing start, our server was excellent. Her recommendations were spot-on, and she treated us with warmth and professionalism. She made us feel genuinely welcome, and we appreciated her service. Later, two women arrived and were initially assigned to the same section as we were. They asked the hostess if they could instead sit under the covered patio--the very area where our request had been declined. Without hesitation, the hostess smiled and immediately accommodated their request. I recognize that there may have been circumstances I wasn't aware of, and I don't want to draw conclusions without all the facts. However, the difference in how our request was handled compared with theirs left me feeling unsettled. As someone who has lived in this community for decades, I have rarely left a restaurant wondering whether I was treated differently, but that is honestly how I felt. I also noticed that the restaurant promotes inclusivity and welcomes people of all backgrounds. I sincerely hope that commitment is reflected consistently in every guest's experience. I share this feedback not to criticize unfairly, but because I believe the owner would want to know how this interaction affected us. I truly wish this business continued success. Our meal and our server were both excellent, and I hope this feedback is received in the constructive spirit in which it is intended. read more

The clam buccatini is pretty good, the sauce is buttery and garlicky and there is a fiat amount of clam on top. Some of the clam taste less fresh than I would like. Overall, pretty good breakfast experience. There were some things that were really good and other things that were just average. The steak and eggs was cooked perfectly and not overdone. Definitely something worth trying. The basic breakfast of the eggs and potatoes was just your average eggs and potatoes. Though it is kind of hard to mess up eggs and potatoes. The Dutch pancake was really good. Service was a bit on the slow side so don't go if you are in a time crunch. Perfect for a dog date from start to finish. Easy to reserve a patio spot on Tock. The hostess saw me outside and came to greet me so I didn't have to worry about trying to check in inside with my pup. They brought out a special dog bowl and dog menu in addition to their human menu. Bella's eggs and chicken came out hot and fresh. We both enjoyed the outdoor heaters and weren't cold even though it was 38 degrees outside. Staff were friendly and kind which Bella loved. All my food items and the espresso martini were delicious. I was in town on vacation and looking for a spot to be able to sit at the bar and grab a nice meal. I was so glad I chose here! The ambiance is very new American chic, the staff are friendly and the bartenders are very attentive. I tried the seasonal pumpkin beer and wasn't a fan so decided on a local ipa instead per the bartenders recommendation. It was a good choice! For the meal I chose a Cesar salad and the chicken pot pie. The salad was not my favorite, solely for the fact the kitchen adds small slivers of lemon peel tossed in, which added a refreshing zest but was bitter when biting into the peel bits making it hard to finish the salad personally. The chicken pot pie is seasonal I was told, but SO good and flavorful with perfectly shredded chicken and a flakey crust to complete it. The hostess was super efficient, so we were seated within a few minutes. The ambiance was inviting with their warm lights and gorgeous hanging plants. The cons- However, I ordered the tuna melt for $19 and would not recommend it. Too basic. Really the two items that were a letdown were the wagyu kabobs which tasted like oversauced steak bites (not worth $18, wagyu??) and the grilled como bread (bland, not a good look - the olive butter was much too light in flavor and could do with a bit of salt flakes) it's a great place to bring people who aren't familiar with Portland's food gems. read more

Very cute spot in Northwest Portland! I happened across the restaurant while walking around and the ambiance drew me in. It was pretty busy even on a weeknight but fortunately didn't wait long for a table on their patio. Patio was nice with heaters and greenery; the inside was really vibey too. Our server was busy handling more tables than she should have probably, but she handled our table really well. We did wait about 45 minutes to get our appetizers and shortly after that our food came out. My teenager ordered the Mac n cheese with bacon. Unfortunately it came without bacon and was pretty thick. My husband ordered the ribeye, and noted as soon as he cut into it, it would not be a hit. The smashed potatoes however were delicious. He noticed a lot of people had burgers so he will probably give that a try next time. I got the lemon thyme chicken and it was actually really good. A lot more food than I was expecting. Overall, willing to give it another try. The price point was decent and I think just a few different menu items will be picked. Lunch has small plates and sandwiches. I chose the half Caesar salad with blackened prawns. The Caesar is kale and radicchio as opposed to romaine. The dressing is garlicky. The prawns were perfect.
