Excellent first visit to Serratto last night as we met a friend that we had not seen for many years. We were in the restaurant for 3 1/2 hours, but Chad never rushed us, and we enjoyed our experience fully. We started with a Maker's Mark Manhattan, a glass of Sauvignon Blanc, and San Pellegrino. All were excellent. Then we did have the appetizer that has been mentioned often as being very good...it was. The Ken's Artisan Garlic Ciabatta Bread was so darn good. We all enjoyed it immensely. Our friend and my wife split the Butter Lettuce. Again it was quite good. I had the French Onion Soup. It was one of the best I have ever had. For our main courses, our friend had the Seared Sea Scallops, my wife had the Ravioli and I had the Pappardelle. Incredible flavors and preparation. Chad was knowledgeable and quite engaging throughout our visit. The food was enjoyed with a perfect bottle of the 2020 Syrah. A perfect accompanient. The staff were outstanding, but I didn't find the happy hour menu up to the standard of years ago. Ken's bread is usually a great idea anywhere, but it shouldn't be presented like something you'd get at Pizza Hut and that's what I found here. The chile shrimp and caesar salad were equally uninspired in their own ways. It wouldn't take a lot to get things back on track, and I think Serrattos survival might depend on it. read more

Haven't eaten here in quite a while, and since our favorite restaurant that used to be next door burned down, we decided this was the next best thing for a nice night out in our neighborhood. There were some positive experiences but not enough to draw us back in the future. We had reservations and were greeted by an aloof staff member. Zero interest in smiling or making us feel welcome. Later, when they brought us our cocktails, I indicated I had the vodka martini to avoid confusion since my husband had gin. They just frowned at us, waved their hand dismissively, and set the drinks down without a word. Our cocktails and wine were excellent, but the food was mediocre at best. My husband had the bouillabaisse. The broth was bland and some of the seafood was overcooked and chewy. I had the beef tenderloin which was a bit overcooked and tough. The root vegetable gratin was undercooked and not enjoyable so I didn't eat it. The mushrooms and jus were a nice addition but there was very little of both. This entree was $44. Harumph. Dessert was a chocolate olive oil cake. It was fine - nothing to write home about. At least our wait person was as we would hope. Friendly and engaged but not pushy or intrusive. They seemed genuinely interested in us having a good experience. Alas, this is not enough to warrant a repeat visit. read more

We ordered three courses split between the two of us. Instead of a dish with two place plates for us to divide up, each dish was arranged on two plates as if we had ordered two half portions. First was the beet and fennel salad: perfectly cooked cubed and chilled beets, smooth, tasty with a mild vinaigrette dressing, probably the best cold-served beets I have ever eaten, topped with shaved fennel with its own mild but flavorful dressing. The dish was magnificent. Next was a dish of Chili Shrimp, a bit spicy fort my taste but very well prepared. Finally, a perfectly prepared Pappardelle with stewed beef in a cream sauce, hot and perfect. Service was exact and friendly and added to our enjoyment of the meal. Tables are a bit close together, but the well-appointed dining room was not full and quiet enough for us to chat in a normal voice. This was a most enjoyable meal. Walked in and this place was packed and super busy during dinner time. We were going in sit in the bar but they didn't have any tables open that could seat a party of 3. The hostess said there was a couch upstairs that we could sit at that had a table but that the seats were low. We ended up sitting there because we didn't want to wait 40+ mins for a table. Service was okay. Our waiter was nice. The food was amazing. We loved everything we ordered. Lots of flavor and perfectly cooked. A bit spendy for such small portions. read more

I gotta say I trust most Yelp reviews wholeheartedly and was cautious coming here for bday girl's dinner. If you are not 4.5+ with 300+ reviews it makes me dig into it more. For some reason Serrato's reviews seem to be more mixed than most. But the bday girl wanted French onion soup and the reviews on that were good and it is indeed spot on... The running theme for all the choices we made was 'wonderfully seasoned, not overly salty, soft proteins, pappardelle stroganoff was velvety creamy, as was the risotto, and osso bucco was wonderfully large and tender.' We communicated 'family style' and the response was on point. Multiple eating plates, multiple silverware with the entrees, the burger was even sliced 4-ways to sample. I was impressed with the attention to detail. The two nitpick is they could come back a bit sooner when it was very apparent everyone was done and maybe wanna see the dessert menu. So we went in not knowing what it was and had the most amazing experience! They closed in 20 mins and we didn't even know. And they still welcomed us and fed us and was so accommodating! I was just blown away!! Erin our server was the best she was like being treated to food and drink from a good friend. Eric the bartender made one of the best martinis I've had in Portland! We went for a Saturday night dinner. It was my friend's go to spot for a while. I love love love the French onion soup and was willing to burn my tongue to eat it!! Highly recommend! We also ordered the fries which were yummy with the aioli. I ordered the radiatore which was really good but came out lukewarm unfortunately. When I reheated it at home it was amazing! You can taste the freshness of the pasta. I would totally come here again for a nice family or friend dinner. It's a moderately fancy spot with intimate lighting. I was sorely disappointed when we celebrated my boyfriend's birthday at this modern Italian - American restaurant. We made a reservation a week in advance noting we were celebrating a birthday. Our service took 15-20 minutes before bringing water or checking in on us and even when we mentioned it was a birthday, there was no enthusiasm about celebrating. We were also wedged between two tables-- one complaining the entire time and another with young children. We had several cocktails which made me uncomfortable to drink and enjoy within 2 feet of young kids. For the food, the portion sizes were lack luster. The pasta was the only redeeming dish, but it was a basic rigatoni. There was no gluten free pasta option which was shocking considering every similar restaurant in the area now has 2-6 options. The scallops and shrimp were over cooked slightly so they were tad cold and chewy. At the end we wanted dessert but our waitress was nowhere to be found so we just asked for the check and headed out. I don't think I'll be in again with so many other great Italian options in the area, especially at this price point. Apparently this is one of my boyfriend's favorite place so I decided to take him on a date here. I give it a 4/5 because the service was kinda slow and there were flies everywhere. At one point it landed in my wine and it had to be replaced. I do keep in mind of the short staff. There's a parking lot designated so you don't have to look for street. On to the food... TLDR: Skip the pizza and go for the pastas! Started off with the Garlic Bread which was delicious but a bit on the oily side. The risotto was creamy and perfectly cooked. I'm not the biggest fan of Italian food but this restaurant was not bad. I did think it was kind of cramped aka the tables were all pretty close together. They had salt on the table in an open container which is kind of strange as multiple people may grab at it because of salt bae craze. My painted hills burger was not bad actually with the meat being cooked to rare like asked. The pizza was pretty flavorful and the cream corn pasta had a sweet flavor. That being said, the food and atmosphere wasn't quite my cup of tea but that's just my opinion. read more

Can't recommend this restaurant. The "happy hour" is secluded to one area of the restaurant. So you can't order happy hour unless your sitting in that specific area. It would have been nice for the hostess to explain before seating us, especially since it was a first time visit. The Caesar salad was delicious but did not taste like a Caesar salad, but wherever it was, it was good! Two of us ordered the Bouillabaisse and it lacked much flavor at all. The hamburger that was to be medium was pretty burned! Would we try it again? Probably not. There are so many restaurants in Portland that used to be fabulous and mediocre now. Now that Cafe Mingo and Barba Mingo are no longer, Serratto is pretty much it for Italian on that side of 21st. It's always been a bit less special, and makes me miss the Mingos even more. The garlic bread is an interesting take on what garlic bread could be if it weren't oversaturated with garlic and butter, and the scallops were done right, however the seafood in the boullabaisse was waaaaay overdone. Imagine really dry fish in a soup, that somehow stays dry even though it's in a broth. How does that happen? It happens when you overcook the shrimp, scallops, and fish in a boullabaisse. The service is fine and the atmosphere is nice, however I do miss the pasta and specials the Mingos had to offer. We'll no doubt go back but will try out some of the other menu items. read more

Easily the best meal we had in Portland! The restaurant has a nice and warm ambiance and the staff was very helpful. We loved our server Tony, who was informative, attentive, and fun. We started the meal with splinting a kale salad. The addition of apples was perfect. The cherries were subtle, not too tart, and didn't over power the salad. The dressing was perfectly coating the salad, but it wasn't wet. And we appreciated that the kale was actually slivered rather than the usual chunks. The attention to detail was great. I then had the duck, and my fiend and the spaghetti with shrimp. While the duck skin was crisp, would have liked for it to be more crispy, so there would be more textural differences in the dish. Still tasted delicious, as did the spaghetti, though it had a tad too much dill. For dessert we had the bitter chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream and the blueberry lemon curd tart. The bitter chocolate was indeed deliciously bitter with the ice cream perfectly offsetting. The tart was a bit disappointing in execution: the curd was not set such that when eating it didn't bleed out of the case onto the plate. And the tart pasty was very thick and tough, so was challenging to eat. Was still delicious though. All in all, glad we shared a bottle to blanc de blanc to toast the meal and our time in Portland. read more

We've since moved across town, but we continue to come here for our special occasions because we love it so much. As often as we are able to, we love catching up with our favorite server Alejandro, he has become someone my wife and I see as an old friend we look forward to talking up every time we visit.
