So I was in the casino approximately three weeks ago, and supposedly was betting more than the table maximum for over five hours with multiple dealers and multiple pit bosses paying out big wins, and no one said anything until the end of the night did not ask for the money back went back yesterday Was asked to pay back over $4000 and after refusing to do so have been banned from every location. Had I not won and over bet all night it's highly doubtful They would have reimbursed me all my over bets. So you are punishing me because I won and your dealers and pit bosses actually paid out my bets for five hours. read more

Had only 5 table games open, with a minimum of $15 per bet. Second and third floor are closed. Went to the sportsbook and asked about betting on the horses. They said they only take bets on sporting events. I asked how did they stay in business and got a wave from the tall gentleman working the sportsbook. read more

Pre Warning!! I've got a lot to say, all of which needs to be said.. ALL of the staff on the floor are absolutely amazing!!! Super friendly and with so many personalities it's impossible to not laugh, smile and feel welcomed from the moment you are greeted by security at the entrance. To the huge bright hello at the bar and the laughs you will have at the food counter. Its usually not too crowded so it makes it easy to enjoy your visit. There are literally not enough stars to show just what a great group they have daily. Now as a veteran in the industry I have a hard time not noticing certain things but just chuck it up to that's just the way it is. However I am a firm believer that a team is only as strong as its leader. The only Food / Beverage managers you will see on the floor or behind the bar are Mike and Tara. Both handle the overload of obstacles in the most professional manor and both will jump from the bar, to the food counter, to putting orders together, to running food down to guests, cooking if need be and it's not odd to see either with a mop in their hand cleaning up a mess in the main area. Both do their job with little to NO support from the actual food and beverage manager. Ashley presents herself very very rarely and when she does she does not show a very hospitable attitude. The hostess has never once even introduced herself to guests on the floor. Most don't even know there is a host. While there is no VIP lounge it is sad that she doesn't even attempt to at least somewhat show interest in any of the Elite and Owner card holders. The whistle is being blown here.. read more

I don't gamble, but I do frequent rundown non-Vegas casinos for their fantastic selection of 80s acts. I've been to the Alton Belle twice now, but I only made the mistake of eating at their buffet once. It was...less than acceptable. If you like to people-watch, you'll be pleased with the odd array of folks that hang out here. It's NOTHING like a Vegas casino. We're talking disabled people who don't appear to have moved from a single slot machine in years, retirees blowing their Social Security checks on the penny slots, gap-toothed cocktail waitresses, and good ole boys from the nearby farming communities acting like they're in Ocean's 11 or something as they puzzle their way through the basics of blackjack. There are exceptions, of course, but overall, this place is kind of a freakshow. Anyway, I've been twice now because they do occasionally have really good concerts. I saw Air Supply here in 2007, along with Loverboy a bit later. It's an extremely small venue, and if you get there early, you can usually snag a decent seat (but be warned, the front seats are typically reserved for people who have some kind of special relationship with the casino. Acoustically, it's an imperfect venue. For seating, it's even worse (all of the seats are level, so if someone tall is front of you...too bad). Still, the acts they bring in are worthwhile and the venue feels very intimate. I should also mention that thanks to wonderful new regulation in Illinois, smokers are not welcome inside the casino. You'll still get the occasional whiff of it from someone whose clothing is tainted, but the bigger concern these days is body odor. Now if they could just outlaw that one... read more

Oh....Alton Belle....you are...well....you're a casino on a boat in Alton.... I usually find myself at the Alton Belle after I have stuffed myself with junk food and cheap beer at Fast Eddie's across the street. It just seems like the logical way to end the evening for some reason. Maybe it's because we feel as though we really need to "make the most out of our drive." I have no idea....but I do know that when we decide it's a great night to go the casinos, no one ever says, "HEY, how about the Alton Belle, it's my favorite!" I mean, it's not that the Alton Belle is bad. It's not bad. It doesn't have all the "glam" (if you can call it that) of Ameristar or Harrah's, and yes, it tends to cater to the geriatrics among us...but it has some upsides to it as well. Because it's in Illinois, it's non-smoking. I personally love this since most casinos are gigantic smoke boxes. Also, you don't have to have one of those ridiculous cards to get into the casino here. I always lose my card and then I have to stand in line to get a new one while my group goes in and starts their gambling. Usually by the time I get inside, everyone is in a bad mood because they have lost all their money and want to go home. See, no card necessary, no problem...I do like that about the Alton Belle. Otherwise, it's your run of the mill riverboat casino...slots, tables, cheap watered down drinks...the whole nine yards. I don't think I need to explain much more... read more

I just visited Argosy Alton Belle Casino's web site and unless my eyes deceive me the gaming floor and buffet pictured in the photos are of a totally different casino. A much nicer one. Unfortunately, this is a locals boat that doesn't seem to do much business during the week. The third floor gaming floor (slots) is only opened on weekends. The restaurant The Journey is closed Mondays thru Wednesday. The Captain's Table buffet is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Too close to their big sister property (Hollywood Casino) I guess. Boat. Casio. Penny slots. WE HAVE THE LOOSEST SLOTS IN TOWN. I love this place. I come in, with a 20$. Me and grandma get to spend quality time hopping around the penny slots. We have a ton of fun and twenty bucks usually lasts all day. I am the one in the family that normally ends up walking out with more money than I walked in with, last time it was eight dollars. A great, smoke-free cheap way to spend an afternoon or evening, catching up with family or friends. And there's free soda! read more

I hate when people save multiple machines.... It makes it even worse when a person claims he is saving multiple machine and is playing a machine across the room. Yes I do believe a person can save a slot machine to use the rest room....But not multiple machines around the casino at the same time...If you are playing more then one machine it should be next to you and not busy.....The casino needs to post a sign saying how many slot machines a person can save on the casino floor and how many they can claim they are playing read more

I would really give Argosy 3.5 stars. I like to think of this little riverboat as the Casino that . . . almost could. If you have made the long trek to Alton to check out another establishment, stopping by the Argosy is not a bad idea. However unless you live North of Florissant I would not suggest making the trip for this casino. Formerly the Alton Belle Casino. I know that all of us who have been to Vegas, grumble about the casino's in St. Louis and St. Charles. But those look like the real deal next to this little baby version. The riverboat is kind of quaint, they have tried to keep it clean and updated and with the Illinois smoking ban there is no smoking. But it is a little tattered and torn however they do have $5 blackjack tables and plenty of penny machines, some new some old. All in all you shouldn't have a problem losing your money here. Although my friend did leave the blackjack table with enough winnings to go shoe shopping. read more

I was very disappointed! My husband and I were going to dinner in the restaurant on the upper level. However, the restaurant is now for VIP only. I have always eaten at this restaurant and was disappointed that they are discriminating against the regular casino players. While they do get some great entertainment in the casino theater, that is unfortunately about all this boat has to offer anymore. It used to actually go up and down the river, which was fun. Now it is permanently anchored right by the huge grain mill, not the prettiest site in Alton. It looks pretty big from outside, but as you walk in, the rooms are very small and dark. The carpet, tile, and general decor has not been updated in a long time, if ever. It looks like the really old, seedy casinos in Vegas: lots of mustard yellow and burgundy, with mirrors, faux mosaics, and shiny curtains for accent. It's less about cards and strategy and more about slot machines, which are abundant. I'm not a big gambler, so the mix isn't important to me, but I find it sad to watch the many older patrons gambling away their meager fixed incomes and life savings. Especially on slot machines with names like Lucky Leprechaun and Video Vixen- did they really work their whole lives to culminate in this? This is not a high roller demographic by any means. I think the competition from the newer casinos right in Saint Louis has really taken a lot of business away from the Illinois locations, so there isn't a lot of means or motivation to upgrade the spaces. As with most casinos, they want you to stick around a while, so a nice perk is that the drinks are generously poured and moderately priced. I looked over the buffet on one visit, but it did not appeal. read more

Argosy casino needs to hire friendlier dealers!! I had a bad experience with one who had a nasty attitude because i agreed with other players that she was dealing the cards too fast. She in return got really nasty with me and said i was being ignorant because i knew how she deals cards. Argosy apparently will hire anyone and has no standards!! They have several black jack tables but only have 1 five dollar table thats open. You have no variety there! People are all crammed up on that one table because they want open up another table to accomodate there customers!! Until argosy makes changes to accomodate there customers more i will not continue playing there. read more

The tables were a bit poorly ran in my opinion. On a really busy (January 1st) weekend day, they had only one table of craps, roulette, etc open. They were $5 minimum though, that was good. But the tables were crowded at times. The roulette table was initially so crowded that I and another person at the table had to "trade" spots constantly... literally I'd put chips down, get out of the way and stand behind someone while someone else got in towards the table to put their chips down, every single spin we'd trade each other. I didn't mind, but I've never heard of anything so crazy. The real problem is the lazy f'kers who have to sit in a chair to play roulette, had they not been there sitting it would've been fine. If there are 18 people playing one roulette table, you could probably open another wheel up? ...Then what's crazy is the dealers (and thus pit boss) were allowing two people at the table to share chips between them and they were on opposite ends of the table. I've never heard of a casino allowing this, and it slowed play. They would literally tell the dealer "give it to her" or "give it to him" when they were getting their payout each time. Not to mention it was already too busy as it was for the dealer to allow such silliness. Get electronic roulette or do something more useful. Later at the craps table, the pit boss Nate was a class A jerk. And the craps dealers were pretty boring and lame. And a waitress interrupted our game for several minutes to give a drink to the shooter, who didn't have tip money so he had to run to the cage and wait in line to cash a chip. The crowd here is pretty typical of any casino I've ever been outside of Vegas... a mix of people who are vastly overweight, carrying oxygen tanks, people on welfare, people borrowing money from their credit card to gamble, and then a few young people sprinkled in. The only redeeming thing about the Argosy was that it's in Illinois so it's smoke free. Which is fantastic when you're dealing with such a low brow crowd who would otherwise be sitting at the slot machine with a cigarette carelessly blowing in your face. I'd go back here over smoking casinos just because of this. That said, they do have a very nice smoking deck... it's outside on the top of the boat. There's a semi-enclosed area you can smoke in with a heater and a nice plasma. I wandered out to the smoking deck just to take in the great view of the mighty Mississippi... no-smoking indoors has its perks! read more

All the staff are overly friendly which isn't a bad thing but I understand it probably means they are begging for as much business as possible. Nothing really stands out about the casino, it's riverboat gambling while docked and the furnishings seem dated. Just a relatively small gambling place clinging on to the older clientele, I was the youngest there by far. God bless them for trying but this isn't my cup of tea! It's not the most exciting casino I've been to ... In fact, it's probably the least exciting casino I've been to, with the least action on the craps tables (which are what I go for) that I've seen. But the employees are friendly, and it's a good place for people-watching that feels more homey to me, as a native Altonian, than the other places you can go to in StL and ESL. read more

The Alton Belle is a typical Illinois river town casino. Inside everything is poorly lit and depressing. The Alton area downtrodden can be found spread around the casino spending their savings on the penny slots. It's definitely not an exciting casino experience like you could have in St. Louis or Las Vegas. That should be obvious - this is Alton - but I at least expect a more colorful atmosphere. The one redeeming quality is the cookies. Nothing beats an Alton Belle Casino cookie! The President's Casino in East Side used to have delicious (and free) chili dogs, but now that they are closed the ultimate casino food can be found at the ABC! read more

Not a fan,My first trip to Argosy was a little disappointing, I remember many years ago when the boat actually took river cruises. I was too young to actually get on to gamble back then but really wish that they would bring this back. Overall the casino was small, which is to be expected, however I couldn't really shake the feeling that something was off. On the 3rd floor while playing some slots I felt like I was being watched by an employee who was just watching the floor, he was standing behind me and it made me feel a little uncomfortable. What really surprised me was the free soda, it wasn't a soda fountain but it was one of the nozzle type dispensers used in a bar. Table games are very limited no more than 10 so odds are you will be playing slots. Overall I wouldn't say that this was an awful experience, however there are better options in St.Louis. read more

I wish they would turn DOWN the volume on the machines; especially the penny machines; they are so distracting and annoying! Bring Belles and Beaus back to every Monday; you have said that it was losing money (It is always packed to capacity); and a lot more of us DO gamble afterwards than those that don't; that being said you could have a lighter lunch; hamburgers; sloppy joes';pizza;etc. I think you have some really, great employees and the Hosts are wonderful. read more

Went to this casino Saturday, it only took me 2 hours to remember why we quit going there. On a Saturday, the casino had very few people there. As we played slots for a couple of hours and by speaking with other people there, it was obvious that these slots don't pay out very well, which would explain why there wasn't many people there. This is exactly why we quit going there last year. We won't be going back there anytime soon. Its strange to me why casino's like this don't realize that if they don't let people win very often, they don't come back. Wouldn't it be smarter to let more people win and have happy customers that will come back more often? It appears Hollywood casinos has given up on this place. One cocktail waitress for two floors, minimal table game availability, and for a couple of hours of play we did not notice anyone winning but heard a lot of complaining. The Steakhouse is not nearly as good as it was when owned by Argosy, the buffet is ok. Maybe it's the economy in the Alton area but it does not appear this business is doing well. Lower your drink and food prices and you might regain customers. Pay a couple of part time cocktail waitresses so your customers can get served. Everyone is friendly here just not enough friendly employees to accommodate the customers. read more

I guess I must be one of those old folks others mention who go to the Argosy in Alton. But I must tell you that I'm not really old and I do go there a lot and I see a really good mix of ages. I think the reviews were a bit biased. I go to a lot of casinos and let me tell you I win more at Alton Argosy than I do at other Illinois casinos or even the nearby Missouri casinos. And, it's wonderful that smoking isn't allowed. I remember there was a day when the Argosy was the Alton Belle and wow the buffet was really good. We would drive an hour and a half to get there just so we could eat the buffet, but other reviews are right, the buffet is not good and needs great improvement. But the other restaurants aren't bad and a person can get a decent meal at the casino location. I go for the casino action, not the food. read more

The place is gross, the paint job outside looks like someone tripped with a full paint buckets. The inside looks like a trailer park with several trailers parked together, a black ceiling, a casino with a black ceiling. What a joke. I went over there on a concert and ate in the buffet, cold food on top, workers texting instead of working and not putting out hot food. At the concert the line snakes through the casino, they make you sit first come first serve, no reserved seats except for the high rollers.
