Post spay and hernia fix, high on life and meds.
    Kerry Q.

This past Monday, I rescued Miss Pennywise (AKA Penny) from really crappy living conditions in a sewer at the 485 inner/74 exchange in Matthews. I took her to a local vet for a quick check-up, rabies vaccine and distemper shot. She was remarkably healthy but definitely needed to be spayed. The next available appointment wasn't for a few weeks so I was in the market for a local-to-me vet that didn't cost a fortune. I was recommended to ARK by a fabulous local rescue group, Friends of Feral Felines (look them up!). I called on Wednesday and got an appointment for her spay very next day. FYI: They're running deals on spay/neuter on Tuesdays/Thursdays through the end of January (get in touch NOW!). I'm so glad I made that call! When we visited this morning, we were greeted so warmly and I knew instantly that I was handing Penny over to very caring people. Spoiler: I'm pretty sure they'd keep her if I gave them a chance, LOL! The spay went smoothly and they also took care of an umbilical hernia Penny had on her tum. When I went to pick her up tonight, they were gushing about how sweet she is (aside from one moment of hissing). I also got a tour of the facilities - it's so cutting edge! I knew right away that ARK is the perfect vet to care for my sweet girl. We're going back to visit in a couple weeks for Penny's distemper booster. The staff is amazing - it's so obvious that they love their jobs and they definitely give every patient the very best care. Speaking of care, they care for all types of animals (ARK, get it?) - from cows and horses to bunnies and more! The facility is brand new and has equipment and tech that I've only seen in movies. They have every service imaginable to keep your pets/herd/ferals healthy and happy. I cannot recommend ARK enough - they've made a very stressful situation so much better and I trust them completely with Penny's care. If you're looking for a new vet, second opinion or a quote for services, please call ARK. They are an amazing practice with spectacular people!

They gave us her pain meds in a cute pink bag with her name written on it. I loved this personal touch.

Dr Wheelock spent our first visit educating us on puppies, behavior tips and great overall advice. It was so nice to have him take the time to refresh us on what to do, look for and how to raise a great dog. It was like going to the pediatrician and we were very appreciative of it. The staff was amazing as always and make each visit easy and enjoyable. When we had to schedule a visit to address an issue with his heart last minute Dr. Ruch was thorough, reassuring and explained all scenarios and protocols. We are so happy with the practice and would highly recommend them!

We now have an orange male tabby. Dr. Matthew Wheelock is amazing. He is easygoing, great with the pets and his advice and recommendations are always welcomed. Even though we lived in Uptown when we first started coming, we continued come even after we moved about 35-40 minutes away. The new facilities are superb and the staff is always engaged and helpful. It's a great environment for both pets and people. This is the only veterinary practice we recommend to others.

One particular day my dog Whiskey had a hot spot and they went above and beyond in their accommodation of us. I can't recommend them enough and would highly recommend Uptown Vet to anyone in the area!

I arrived 13…read moreminutes after my appointment and was told to Leave and come back in an hour and a half even though the practice was empty. I imploded the front desk receptionists to have some compassion as I didn't want to put my dog through the cruelty of having to wait an additional hour and a half of anxiety, but I was told in no uncertain terms they were 'busy' and If you're more then ten minutes late they need to get money from the next customer. I was saddened and shocked by the lack of compassion. I left feeling very frustrated, feeling as though my pet had been mistreated, as had I. They couldn't take care of a visibly traumatized animal because we arrived 3 minutes after their ten minute cut off time. Mind you we have been clients the entire 5 year life of my dog. I called the receptionist hours later to ask for Dr. Jen Larson's email address (the owner) so that I could express my dissatisfaction at the way I and my dog were treated. The receptionist (Mikayla) told me she never hear of a 'Dr: Jen Larson'. I found that strange as it's small practice. I feel I was lied to. Later that night, I was surprised that Dr. Jen Larson thought it appropriate to call me at my home and lecture me on why her receptionists are the best and their policy is ten minutes and her practice did nothing wrong. Honestly I have never been looking for a discount or money back. All I wanted as an apology for mistreating my pet. Instead I was insulted in a very u professional way and quite frankly felt threatened by her tone. I'll be filing a complaint with the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Board. If this is how a 5 year client is treated understand what you are in for. They care about money more than a distressed animal and the only apology you will get is nothing.

When we first started coming here, it was fantastic. The staff were attentive, and both my pets and I always felt comfortable walking through the door. Unfortunately, over the past year or so, things have really gone downhill -- it seems to line up with when the practice switched to a new system. The front desk/admin team specifically has become a consistent problem. They rarely seem to know what's going on, and I've been asked basic questions (like whether my pets are on any medication) that should be right there in the chart before we even start talking. On more than one occasion, staff have mis-gendered my pet -- which is a pretty simple thing to double check. Beyond that, I've had to follow up multiple times just to get test results or other updates that should have been communicated proactively. I've also been billed for services that were never actually performed. Wait times have gotten progressively longer with each visit, and the cleanliness of the facility has noticeably declined. More than once, it seems like the team simply forgot I was there -- either waiting for discharge or waiting to be checked out of an exam room. To be clear, the veterinarians themselves are wonderful. They remember my pets, clearly care about their wellbeing, and I have no complaints about the actual medical care. But the surrounding administrative and operational issues have made it hard to trust the practice as a whole, and I don't feel confident continuing to bring my pets here. I'll be looking for a new vet, which is disappointing given how good things used to be.

Everyone we interacted with, including the doctor and the receptionist, was professional and welcoming. What really stood out to me was their fear-free approach for my kitty. They're AAHA accredited, let Goose set the pace, and never took him out of the room, which made such a difference in keeping him calm and comfortable. I'm a veterinary technician myself, and it meant a lot to be able to sit down and have a genuine conversation with the doctor without feeling rushed. They listened openly, made thoughtful recommendations, and were truly engaged with both me and Goose throughout the appointment. This is exactly what we were looking for in a vet, and we truly couldn't be happier with the experience. Highly recommend!

When I booked the appointment, I made sure to mention that he's an older, asthmatic cat. I would have expected that information to prompt a few more questions -- about his temperament, how he handles, whether sedation might be needed -- so the visit could be planned accordingly. Instead, it seems like this only came up as a problem once we were already there. Two male vet techs took my large, senior, asthmatic cat back for his exam. They were friendly, asked good questions, and seemed genuinely interested in understanding my cat before taking him for vaccines and bloodwork. About 10-15 minutes later, they returned with Dr. Foreman. She walked in without introducing herself or asking who I was, and opened with, "What a grumpy cat." She then told me they'd given the vaccines but couldn't draw blood, clip his nails, or do anything else I'd requested, and suggested sedating him for a follow-up visit. I was caught off guard -- my cat has had blood drawn and nails clipped at previous vets without issue. She explained he was breathing hard and being aggressive, and that she was concerned for her staff's safety and his. That's a reasonable concern on its own. What wasn't reasonable was that she never came to discuss it with me directly or explore alternatives before deciding the appointment was over. I explained that I don't drive and had relied on a friend to bring us in, and that getting a large, older cat into a carrier isn't simple. Her response: "Well, at least he's legal now" -- referring to the state-mandated vaccine. No acknowledgment of the situation, no empathy. When I said the bloodwork was the most important part of the visit given his age, she said, "I could have just done something and then be coming back here to tell you he's dead." I called out how hostile that comment was, and her tone only became more dismissive from there. This was, by a wide margin, the most unprofessional interaction I've had with a veterinarian. I won't be returning, and I'd urge anyone considering this clinic to ask specifically who they'll be seeing and stay clear of Dr. Foreman.
