The vaca (of a lifetime) was in its final chapter, the fam coming back to Roma (where it originally started) and just feet (okay, meters!) away from our (final) hotel... this joint. A warm and inviting staff greeted us, sat us outside in their 'dining shed' and we just knew it was going to be a good (great) night. Almost 5-stars across the board from the entire fam (rack of lamb to a hamburger - in Italy?! - to gnocchi and fettuccine dishes) - we were stuffed (portions here were a bit more 'serious' than at some other spots over the past week). Our tour guide recommended this place for lunch after our tour of the Vatican. We didn't want a place in a touristy area, just wanted legit, good cooking. He definitely picked the right place. This third generation family restaurant was off the charts good. The inside was super cozy and the servers and granddaughter were so sweet and funny and had great recommendations. I shared egg with truffle on toast, pasta carbonara and an eggplant dish with my friend and they were all so tasty. Nice size portions and of course the wine was delicious. I don't ask for much -- mostly snacks and kindness. My mom politely asked if there were fries (because I'm TWO), and the waitress yelled "NO, THIS ISN'T MCDONALD'S." Very loud. Very rude. After our Vatican CIty tour we were ready for lunch and started our search. Yelp led us to this spot. We arrived around 2 on a Thursday afternoon and luckily a corner table outside was waiting for us. Surprisingly, they were busy. Inviting and cozy Trattoria with an enclosed outside seating area. We started with the Burrata appetizer and an Aperol Spritz and Moretti Original Lager. Topped with anchovies, the Burrata was delicious. Complimentary bread was a nice touch. For lunch it was Spaghettoni Felicetti Alla Carbonara -proper Carbonara with Pork cheek vs Pancetta-amazing. From "Our Proposal,"Noodles with Cuttlefish Ragout was excellent. We were able to make reservations for our party of 9 after our visit to the Vatican for 12pm. The inside was very clean, service was fantastic and the food was delicious. This was honestly one of the best meals we had the whole time we were in Rome. From the salad to main course and dessert. Everyone really enjoyed their meals. Seeing its location only a few blocks from the Vatican I was worried it would be just another average tourist eatery. Food was excellent. Best gnocchi ragu of the trip. We got seated in the back room which had air conditioning-a pro. However the pros just about ended there. The amatriciana we ordered was hard and undercooked, which was a big surprise for Rome. You could literally see the center was a different color. I had a gnocchi dish which was decent, and the other dishes were so so. The one major issue was even by Italian standards the service was exceptionally slow, and the staff kept forgetting us. The last things we had ordered were two espressos, which they forgot and needed reminding when they brought the bill including the charge for it. The lunch took over 2 hours, and when we left, all the people in the restaurant when we entered had already left, and the place was pretty empty. After a long day of walking St. Peter's Basilica we stopped at Arlù for lunch and drinks. Located on a street corner, the outside seating area catches a nice breeze and with a decorated covering to keep the sun off. The food and drink service was fast and the appetizers and main entree were very well done. Our waiter was quick to service and attentive to any requests. After staying in Rome for a few days you get so annoyed by people trying to get you into their restaurant. You know this is a quality restaurant when people are waiting to get a table. We waited a few minutes for an outside table where the people watching was amazing. Close to the Vatican there are many of the faithful walking by on their holy trek. We shared an antipasto board with some different cheeses and salamis. The main entree was also shared with a sumptuous lasagna that was dense. It was a good call to split because it would have really been filling. It was vegetarian but the taste was so good meat would have distracted from the flavors. Along with our meal we shared a 1/2 liter of the house red wine which was a good deal a 9 euros. Service was very prompt and attentive. Unlike the horror stories you hear about slow service this restaurant really delivered on the high quality and service. Absolutely loved our food- my husband got the special of the day which was the carbonara with roasted artichoke.
