My favorite place in town for a quick Tex-Mex fix. I wish I could marry the queso. I usually eat one whole boat of chips (which are refillable) all on my own. I love that the chips and tortillas are fresh (sometimes you can see the machine making them), the salsas are free, and the service is super fast. It's also a good place to go with my toddler, because it's loud anyway, and there's plentiful outdoor seating for nice weather. I've never personally tried the wings ( not a big fan in general) but my husband says they're good. I used to live super close to here and be a regular, but now that I've moved out to the country, I don't come here as much, but it's still a regular stop for us. read more

Don't put your expectations too high for this place. I'll admit, it can be hit or miss. When I finally got his attention, he made a house margarita, on the rocks, with salt, that may have filled a quarter of the ice filled glass. Luckily, I was able to stop him before he was able to fill the entire glass with mix. They got the name I wrote on my order card incorrect, so when I did get my food it was cold. I tried this place for take out recently & I was so happy I did. I love a crispy taco with ground beef & they have them! They don't just have them, they are delicious. The meat is nicely seasoned; not too spicy. The taco was fresh & had plenty of cheese, lettuce & chopped tomatoes. And it was NOT greasy. I am so in love with their crispy tacos. And since I live in Carrboro, they are not far from my house. I also got a platter with beans & rice & a cheese enchilada. The enchilada was a little spicy for me, but most anyone else would not say that. I do not like much spice at all. The beans & rice were delicious & not greasy either. Armadillos ( Dillos ) is the perfect spot to bring a friend or a son!!! I first visited this spot the night before Thanksgiving, and had a super-fun time!! It began with great tacos and ended with a great dart game. The employees are loyal and accommodating. They provide, along with the ambience, an atmosphere of home and comfort. I'm sorry to tell you this, but the food here is so bad that even my Mexican friends and relatives avoid it like the plague. At least Taco Bell doesn't pretend to be anything more than a fast food joint and their salsa is actually more flavorful (even though it comes in little packets.) There are other quick, cheap and tasty options for Tex-Mex in Carrboro and Chapel Hill. My son ordered beef enchiladas, which tasted like they had been sitting in a tray for a while, then fried in rancid oil and covered with what seemed to be tomato paste, which was most likely dried out sauce, with very little flavor. The interior is way past it's prime. Tired, old and dingy. Needs a total refresh ASAP. The food is generally good but somewhat overpriced. The chili and cheese queso are probably the two best items on the menu. The tacos are fresh pressed so no problem there. The free salsa is fresh and always good. This place is no Carrburritos, but after a sad previous Milltown experience, this place came through in a pinch--we were starving. After perusing the menu you check everything off that you want and present your little sheet to a cashier. You can also check on the menu whether or not you want however many #'s of sour cream. Just so ya' know, when you request sour cream here you get a little squeezable packet-meh. The list of items you can check is a little confusing, because you can check a side of chips and guac or you can check it under their "Dips and Chips" category. I just picked it as a side. The burrito was sizable and tasty. The chips were okay, edible, and the salsa, which you scoop out yourself, was pretty good, as was the guac. We ordered the regular size guac, which seemed pretty big. I'd be afraid to see the Texas-sized one. I filled up on salsa, guac and chips, as I have a tendency to do and I took half of my burrito home for a tasty leftover treat later. I've been curious about this place, but never ventured in. I'm glad I finally did, as it was a decent experience. While we were there, it was quite bustling. I guess I've been missing out, but I'll probably stick to my fave, Carrburritos. First, I totally understand some of the negative reviews of Armadillo Grill, and they are not deserved so I'll explain why. First, I've eaten at this place many many times. It's reasonably priced and the food tastes good and the ingredients are fresh. Armadillo Grill is only bad if you do not understand what it is...It's like Tex-Mex meets the state fair, but in a much fresher, healthy kind of way. You order at the counter. Order these things only if you are a new customer: 1) soft tacos (chicken or bean+cheese are my favorites), you get to pick your toppings...the guacamole is very good and fresh. 2) Chips and queso--their queso is addictive like crack 3) Wings--they are pretty good, though the quality has been variable from one visit to the next. 4) If you like iced tea, get their tea, its pretty good. 5) If you like salsa, the pico de gallo in the salsa bar is good That's it. Armadillo is great, plus you can eat outdoors and its a fun, comfortable place where you can make noise with a larger group of people if you like. I love the 'Dillo. If I'm hungry late at night, it is like a beacon in the darkness. The food is cheap, fast, and darn tasty (and they have a customer loyalty card that means we get a free taco about every third visit). I love the steak soft tacos, and I enjoy being able to customize exactly what I get (and totally don't mind paying a nickel or two to do so). The queso is like gooey liquid crack, and the chips are fine. My only small complaints are that the wings are inconsistent, and I don't like the taste of the little single-serve sour creams. I'm really surprised they can provide the quality they do at such a great price, but I'm grateful, because it means I don't feel guilty succumbing to my frequent cravings. read more

After a fun night at Fullsteam- I went to Armadillo and decided to pig out. I got the cheese enchiladas, rice, and beans. Beans were gross- way too much liquid. Rice was ok- nothing special. Enchiladas had onions in them and it was overpowering. I wanted to beat my head into the table for ordering something I always order elsewhere... (and expect it to be the same everywhere..) I have been to Armadillo Grill a few times. The food is consistently good--not amazing, but always good enough and the price is right! One tip...make sure you are specific about what you want on your order form (i.e. add lettuce and tomato/guacamole/sour cream or whatever on a burrito). I didn't realize that you had to specify to add lettuce and tomato and then it was almost too late. They make the food soooo quickly that my super nice cashier had to run over and figure out which burrito was mine. Lucky for me, she caught it in time. Also lucky for me, I didn't have the other cashier who got kinda mad at me for holding up the line with my request. Oops! I am from Texas and this place is the only one around that even comes close to a Tex-Mex taco - homemade tortillas and well seasoned meat (which is typically lacking everywhere else). This is the only place I head to when I want a true 'fajita' taco - TexMex style. There are plenty of other decent tacos in the area, but not anything close to a real TexMex fajita and most places don't make their own tortillas.
