Needs to try this historical gem. The service and atmosphere was fast and friendly. The food was A1. Order consistent of 1 Grandma Slice, 2 Cheese Slice and Armando's Citrus Soda.

Horrible. You're making money off of customers from local mass transit who are desperate for anything in their stomach. Upgrade your quality

Armando's has been here for years. I just stopped by for a slice and it was horrible. I took two bites and threw it out. The mozzarella is VERY low grade. The crust wasn't bad and the sauce ratio to the cheese was good. But, it tastes like crap. I've experienced their pizza over the years and they are deep declining. This is not good pizza. Canarsie in general, has horrible pizza.

    So old school it hurts...
    Justin L.

Although this place is far out in Canarsie--aka the edge of the unknown world for Manhattanites--its a legend in these parts. A place doesn't stay open for 50 years and not be well known to be fair, but its location right next to the L train, late hours, and cheap prices helped solidify its rep. And while all of this is nice, and while the place has plenty of character (Dodgers/old school Brooklyn pics cover an entire wall, owner always there, the place's name is also spelled no less than 3 different ways throughout the place, the main sign outside looks so fucking old school from the outside that it hurts), it wouldn't mean much to me if the food weren't good. I got two slices: the sicilian slice which is what they're famous for, and the grandma slice which they recently added. The sauce here is great, well balanced and matches the slices every well. The sicilian is definitely a belly bomb and although I am not a fan of sicilians normally, this one had a fluffy inside and plenty of cheese; it was a belly bomb for sure and made me pass out on my way back to the city, but it was as thoroughly enjoyable as any sicilian I've had. The grandma slice was also great, but in a differnet way. Where the sicilian was a rough around the edges as it should be, the grandma was much more refined. They used a different sauce for this, one which they kicked up a notch with some seasonings, olive oil and fresh mozzarella. They edge of the crust was the only problem I had with it, as it came upwards and was harded than I would've liked, where most grandmas have a flatter, softer outer crust. But the sheer deliciousness of this slice outweigh this issue. If you had combined these two kinds of pizza into one, you would have a slice that could compete with any in the city, period. Is this place worth a trip out to Canarsie for? If you're a pizza nut like me, it sure is. However, this is a place that, if they tweaked some things, could have near perfect pizza. Whether they do so is up to them, but they damn sure have the legacy, skill, and support (see their facebook page) to do so. PS: This place is the same owners as the Armando's in Starrett City, which has many more Yelp reviews.

Good, neighborhood pizza place. Everyone friendly, everyone knew each other. Had a big veggie slice -- delicious (though maybe could heat up longer), plus garlic knots. Conveniently right outside exit of end of L train.

I finally got a chance to check out Armando's pizza and I now see why they have such good reviews. The customer service is fantastic, unlike any other pizza place that I've been to. The restaurant is set up like most NY pizza shops. It's a small space with limited seating. When I walked in I was greeted by a friendly gentleman who was prepared to take my order. He had such a great personality and a cool sense of humor. I ordered a plain cheese pizza and he asked me if I wanted the pizza warm or hot. I was surprised that they actually take the time out to ASK customers how they would like their pizza. Needless to say, the pizza was yummy in my tummy! Lol! But once again, the customer service is what really makes this place stand out. I will definitely be returning.

I tried looking up this pizza from Target Richfield for a review, but it sent me to the NYC location, so forgive me if this review is in the wrong thread. Anyway, wow. I've been to New York City and ate at the original Joe's Pizza. What an epic slice of pizza. Now back home in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the great white north of snow that never ends, I finally tried the frozen Di Fara pepperoni pizza from Target no less. Sorry Joe's, but this is on par with your pizza (if it was frozen). Dave Portnoy was right with his high review. This pizza is very good. The thick cut pepperoni, great basil, and the crisp chewy crust was excellent for a frozen pizza. Nice under carriage as well. I cooked the pizza at 480 degrees in an electric pizza oven for 10 minutes, and the result was very good. I added a drizzle of hot honey, and it was spectacular (okay, I also added some fresh picked jalapeños as well). The pizza was hot and melted in the center, and the crust was very crisp, but still had some chew. Wow. This was the best frozen pizza I have had. Bar none. New York, you spoiled me when it came to pizza. Now I can get a taste of New York at home. Great job! I may or may not eat the last 3 pieces currently sitting in the fridge before bed.

Dom has now passed but his legacy continues. I've always compared the then pie vs now. And like most things,, nothing beats the original. This is still a very good slice. I once rated them as the best in NYC. Unfortunately, its not at the very top but still on the podium. Coming back feels like you are saying hello to an old friend. We ordered a whole pie half plain and half pepperoni, which is only $2.50 more. What I notice right away is the zesty tomato sauce, which Has love. However, I must admit that the crust was a bit too hard for my taste. Yes! It was crispy, but biting through it was somewhat difficult. Fresh mozzarella, a nicely thin crisped crust, sweet tomato sauce, and fresh basil makes this simple pizza taste great. The fried calamari also impressed. It tasted notably fresh--light, clean, and not overly chewy like pre-frozen versions can sometimes be. While I can't say for certain, it had that just-prepared quality that makes a difference. The Caprese salad was a great way to start the meal, with fresh tomatoes, creamy burrata, and a balsamic drizzle was a nice light start. The atmosphere leans old-school Italian, which adds to the charm and character. Service was fine--nothing remarkable, but no major issues either. That said, my overall rating takes a big hit solely for the restaurants ridiculous tipping policy choices rather than the food itself. The automatic 20% gratuity added to the bill was frustrating. The menu does indicate that 18%, will automatically apply, or will be 20% for parties of six or more. We were only three people, so it felt inconsistent and unnecessary. On top of that, the added cost for credit card usage didn't help. I don't mind tipping for good service! In fact, I tip well--but I prefer having the choice and I'm old school so it's the principle of the matter. Being forced into it, takes away from an otherwise enjoyable meal. Bottom line: the food is strong and worth trying, but the billing practices leave a bad taste. If those were adjusted, this could easily be a higher-rated experience.
