With 31 retail locations in California, most primarily in SoCal, Armstrong Garden Centers traces its roots all the way back to 1893, when John Armstrong founded his eponymous nursery. It is the largest independent garden retailer in the country, employee owned. This location in Long Beach is on 10th street and has a large dedicated angled parking lot. Most of the plants are outside, but they have a large indoor area for houseplants and the instruments to take care of them. Our neighbors love growing and taking care of various plants, so we all stopped in after an early dinner to see what they have. It still amazes me the plants that garden centers in California can sell because of our climate.

I've always had amazing customer service experiences at LB Armstrong. Associates greet you with a smile and you can tell they truly love what they are doing. Enter the gate on 10th St. and there will be ample parking, although this store is always busy! This is a great place to stroll and much longer than you might think from the outside. Towards the front you will find fountains and shade plants, succulents and flowering species in the middle, and trees toward the back. I believe this location even offers classes, which I will have to check out one of these weekends! Houseplants can be found inside along with a cornucopia of planters and gardening tools. I recently found a couple of telescoping grow lights here on sale, and my bonsai and rubber plant are thriving!

Maya is one of the sweetest and most gentle people I've ever met. She was so patient and helpful while we searched for the perfect pot for my plant, even lifting heavy pots and holding my plant without hesitation. I was feeling a bit down today, and her kind energy combined with being surrounded by their beautiful plants lifted my energy. Thank you Maya.

My weekend ritual for visiting Long Beach (a/k/a having my favorite sandwich) is to also browse this Armstrong, sometimes I am just checking to see the variety they have compared to my local one in Claremont. The staff here is always nice and the selection both indoors and outdoors appears healthy and well cared for. Respectfully Reviewed.

My partner and I have came in a few times to browse because we enjoy plants but have been nervous to become plant parents. Well we finally did it! Thank you staff, we were helped and asked so many questions to choose our first plant. We decided on a snake plant for now and we can't wait to see her grow. Enjoy my partner silly face as he carries our first plant :) will be coming back to continue the plant life

Wow, wow, wow. All I can say is that I'm impressed with this Armstrong location. Maya helped me with picking my lemon and lime trees. She answered all my questions, and I asked a bunch of questions (in the rain no less). She even helped me with taking my plants to the register. Jesus, who rang me up gave me so many pointers and tips to help my new plant babies grow and thrive. He drew me a diagram and a list of product to use. Jesus took me to the back to show me the other plants he's growing. I was amazed! He has a lemon bonsai plant that is a smaller plant. Very impressed. He took the time to teach and educate me. You can tell gardening is his passion! I have to transplant my trees so I'm excited to come back and learn more from Jesus!

Not long after planting, the tree didn't seem to be developing properly, so I stopped by looking for advice. The experience was disappointing. The employee helping me appeared visibly intoxicated in the middle of the day (someone I believe is connected to ownership, as I had met him during the purchase). He was unhelpful and dismissive, so I left without any real guidance. I continued trying to care for the tree, but within two months it died. When I returned to ask whether there was any warranty, replacement option, or even assistance toward purchasing a new tree, I was met by a rude employee who immediately became defensive, repeatedly emphasizing that they are a "family-owned business" while offering zero accountability or solutions. Instead, I was blamed for the tree dying, despite the fact that I had already come in previously asking for help. For a business that sells and installs expensive trees, I expected at least some level of customer service, support, or professionalism. Instead, I got poor advice, no accountability, and an overall hostile experience. I'll be taking my business elsewhere and would recommend others do the same. Update: After digging up the dead tree, it was obvious why it failed. The root ball was extremely tight and root-bound, likely from sitting too long in the nursery box. It only had two mature roots supporting it, and both had been cut during removal and installation. They also didn't use fresh soil when planting it, which gave it little chance to establish. I went to another family-owned nursery afterward, and the difference was clear--they stood behind their product and offered a one-year warranty.

The reason why - and I have to point this out because the store is named Rooted - is most of the neon pothos did not look too healthy aside from one plant in a 6" pot (larger than what I was looking for). In fact, many of the plants were rather middling, with soil looking dry when most inventory are tropical houseplants. Was it the heat at the time I visited or negligence? I'm not sure, but even with seemingly fair prices as plant shops go (4" philodendron Brazil was $12), it's harder to buy a plant that looks sickly. In addition to plants, Rooted also carries housewares and refills for shampoo, body wash, etc. I can't speak to the prices because I have a similar store within walking distance that I typically bring my dispensers to.

However, when I've gone in looking to purchase something specific, it hasn't been available -- even when I returned a week or two later. Yes, it's something they sell in store normally. The staff is generally helpful, though I did have an awkward experience at checkout. When I mentioned the weight of an item, the staff member questioned the accuracy several times. I wasn't sure if she was new or if there was some hesitation in trusting the information I provided. She said she was "just trying to make sure it was right," but it felt unnecessary and a bit uncomfortable. It might make more sense for staff to weigh items themselves to avoid situations like this. Overall, it's a pleasant store, but the inconsistent availability and that checkout experience make me unsure if I'll return.
