My 113-year old house is a freezer in the winter and an oven in the summer. I needed a mini-split system desperately. I chose Arnica because of their great reviews, their status as an elite diamond contractor for Mitsubishi, and the fact that they've been a successful family-owned business for over 30 years. The entire process was easy from start to finish. The owner, Simone, came to my house and took quick laser measurements of my living room and bedrooms, and I got an estimate in two days. I needed one outdoor condenser unit and three indoor evaporator units. Once I signed the contract, Rosette the office manager scheduled the installation dates. The technicians, Marco and Mario, showed up on time, prepped the rooms and installed the indoor units quickly. Marco was kind enough to recommended a better placement of my living room unit so the adjacent room could get cool as well. The next day, the team installed the outdoor unit and worked with the electrician to get the system running. Arnica is a professional operation through and through. Great job installing 2 new Mitsubishi roof compressor-condensers and a new wall blower inside to an upper west side Brownstone. Rosette, Service Manager, did a fantastic job coordinating the several visits. The workmen - especially Neil - did a great job and he and the other workers are clearly skilled in all things Mitsubishi. As with every job, there were a few installation issues but in my opinion it's how a company handles the few issues not the issues themselves that matter. Arnica reached out and had Mitsubishi technicians thoroughly inspect my heat pumps and give some very valuable tips on optimizing efficiency despite the fact that the original installers (not Arnica, as far as I know) had installed a vastly oversized system. Arnica is about old-school customer service and professionalism. They came to repair my HVAC unit which they had not originally installed but had done major work on the year before. They honored the warranty on their work, and they visited a total of three times--because of the trickiness of the issue--to get everything sorted out. The second two times at no cost. It's stressful getting something repaired that is not repaired in the first visit, and that even gets more complicated by the next visit. But Arnica stood by their work. We had Arnica replace our giant old boiler 2 years ago after getting quotes from several companies. They had the most competitive price and installed it right away. Last year I called to ask how to get the system up and ruining again after a summer break and the lady on the phone walked me through it. I asked if it needed a yearly maintenance and she said that the first year should be fine since the system was brand new. So honest! I really appreciated that. This year we got a tech to come and just start it up to make sure everything was okay. They called half an hour before they arrived in their appointment window and the tech was super friendly, walked me through everything and didn't leave until he was sure everything was running great. I called Arnica a few years ago when my boiler died and they replaced thermal coupling for $325.Simple.This time the guy said that I needed thermal coupling and air valve.Ok fine.I paid the $109 service charge and figured if I did hire them to do the job the next day,that would be deducted from the final price.However,the guy that came told me the "new policy" which started last month was that you always have to pay the service charge AND the cost of the job.What kind of BS is this????? When I called back asking about the part they said Id have to wait an additional 5 days because they had to order it from the manufacturer!!!I told them that I have a 90 year old woman and a BABY living in the building!On top of that,they priced this at $1500 plus tax.Are you KIDDING ME? I didnt have heat for 3 days because I waited 2 days for them to come and they told me to call next day and theyd give me price for parts. Everyone was freezing and they want me to wait even MORE?????This is a company that prides itself in fixing heat for 20 years????Luckily I found someone else that came,said I needed new air valve and thermal coupling.He went to a plumbing supply store a few blocks away,bought parts and fixed it in a half hour for $550!The people that run this company are DISHONEST SCAMMERS!!!!! STAY AWAY!!!!!!!! Arnica installed my semi-ductless air conditioning system about 5 years ago. They installed 5 units inside my home and I have 3 "generator" units outside which I assume power the inside units. The service 5 years ago was impeccable. Everyone seemed to be professional and the installation was quick and easy. I have had no issues with the system since then. I'd recently contacted the company for check up services, however, my experience this time was a total 180 from what I'd previously experienced. I was initially given an appointment for a 5 hour window (between 1 and 6). I spent my entire day in the house waiting for service but no one called or showed up. After 6pm I contacted the company but the answering service had to have someone return my call. WIthin 10 minutes someone contacted me and VERY UNAPOLOGETICALLY stated that the technician was behind schedule and would not be able to make it. Without listening to my displeasure with the unprofessionalism of not showing and not calling, the woman over talked me and kept attempting to get me to select another appointment time. I felt like she was unprofessional and not addressing the fact that the company had wasted my entire day. I also felt that she viewed the situation as acceptable and didn't see where I had an issue. The next morning I attempted to contact Simon, the owner, to make him aware of the situation. It seemed as if the unprofessional office staff was attempting to keep me from speaking with him. Later in the day I was able to reach him. Simon was very professional as always and addressed my concerns and scheduled another appointment for me for the next few days. At the time of the appointment, the technician was supposed to check and service 3 units. Paying $129+ for servicing of each unit, I expected more than a cleaning of the filters which I've diligently cleaned on my own for the past 5 years, and a water bottle of water being poured through the system to make sure that it was draining properly (I could see that on my own by the water which drained on my front and back patio during use). I also thought that the service for the unit included checking and servicing the outdoor unit that is connected and required for use of the indoor unit. Ensuring that the fan is operating properly and the levels of free-on in the system was sufficient I assumed was part of the $129 service. I found out during my appointment that the outdoor units are an additional $129 for maintenance servicing. *Confused* That's like paying for shoe shine service and finding out that only one shoe is included in the price even though a pair of shoes comes with TWO. I don't understand why if one unit cannot operate without the other, why the charge for servicing would be separate? Why was that not clearly explained prior to servicing? And why would I pay $129 for the regular maintenance that I'd been doing on my own effectively? After paying $450+ for a maintenance job that I could've done on my own and dealing with the unprofessionalism in the prior days, I was not satisfied with the overall service this time around. Arnica is overall a good company but service, whether for installation or maintenance, should be scheduled and detailed/explained by Simon. Technicians should be able to check your system and tell you which, if any, services need to be rendered prior to doing any work. The technician shouldn't be told by office staff the details of work that needs to done without the company looking at the systems and instead taking a novice users opinion on what work needs to be done. I don't specialize in air systems so aside from the unit operating effectively, I am not educated enough on the system to be able to tell the office staff which service would be best for my units. I spent a pretty penny on essentially nothing. Definitely not happy about that. I feel like I was ripped off this time around. Update: After speaking with the owner for a second time (following the end of the job) the situation was rectified and I am pleased by the professionalism and courtesy that he, Simon, has displayed. He believes in doing right by the customer and ensuring total satisfaction. Tip: to avoid any misunderstandings, especially if heating and air systems aren't your forte, speak with the owner and conduct all business transactions through him. After waiting several hours, on the 5th, I called back and explained that this was my second call.I was told that someone would get back to me.
