Mom elected to age in place and eventually die at home. That was her ultimate wish. However, my family all had lives of their own and they did their level best to provide that care for mom. Eventually mom deteriorated to the point where she needed round the clock care. So, the family created a schedule which included splitting up the week where someone would bunk at mom's, sleeping on the couch and staying up at all hours of the night assisting mom whenever she needed us. Needless to say, we're not young either and it began to take its toll. Enter Don Pagunsan who owns this small business, Good Nature Healthcare (GNHC). We heard about Don's company via word of mouth so we gave him a call. Don manages a staff of home-healthcare aids much like the "visiting angels" type of care you see on TV. We were initially skeptical as we had already gone through a couple agencies only to have mom get upset at them and either fire them or drive them away. Don assigned a caregiver to us as we tip-toed in to allowing them in to our family's lives and suffice to say that Don hit it out of the park. As mom declined, we expanded coverage from one to two caregivers, both providing for mom's care throughout the night. We picked up about 6 hours each in the afternoons which gave the family not only the ability to manage our daily lives but also provide us a window of time with which to be with mom. And mom was very pleased with Don's caregivers. They were attentive, polite and expressed "love" for our mom. When mom moved, they were there by her chair or bed-side. They cooked her meals and attended to her every needs. They also kept copious notes in a log book so handoffs took place seamlessly and we were able to track every significant act or activity that took place. I once asked mom if I could help her when I was there visiting and she said, "No, I want Tarah." It became a family joke that Tarah was now mom's favorite. GNHC contracts with you after meeting in person to understand your needs. They bill at a very reasonable hourly rate. They have regular business meetings among the caregiver staff so everyone is aware of everyone else's customers which makes good sense in the event that a quick or temporary substitution is required and coverage is maintained. If you are located in the Irvine/Tustin/Mission Viejo area of Southern California, I highly recommend this company. They are an affordable alternative to assisted living facilities and allow your elderly or health-impacted family member to continue living in their homes. Don's is a licensed and bonded company and from the start we were very impressed. Mom has since passed away and Don and her primary caregiver, Tarah, are planning to attend mom's funeral. They truly do care and I can't say enough great things about this business.

Gigi ( the owner) worked with us in parallel with the agreement stipulations, confirming we felt comfortable with the details and payment options. Once we got the consistent care, thank you sooooo much to nurse Lisa (a Godsent) the nurses were great. Then the second night they said they didn't have a nurse for us. Nurse Ray volunteered to stay an extra 4 hours but she pushed and got someone here at 10:00. Nurse Brandy was here, thank God. About 2:15 in the morning she checked my Grammy and woke my mom to let her know Grammy was passing. Can you imagine if they didn't send a nurse like they were initially going to do? Hospice is meant for a peaceful and painless transition and a peace of mind for loved ones. The service themselves provided none of that. As a matter of fact their social service person called this morning, the day after her passing, asking when would be a good time to come and meet my Grammy. This was so heartbreaking and the best they can do is "sorry!" Do not put a loved one through this.

I'd been visiting monthly for upwards of one year to keep an eye on her, monitor her mental state, and ensure she was still capable of living on her own. Some months left me questioning but things were never so bad that I felt the need to act. Then, days after her birthday the decision was taken out of my hands. Two days before I was returning home she told me "I can't do it anymore. I need some help." H3Assist is the company you call when a loved one needs home care or worse. Picking up the phone and dialing their number is a line in the sand that most of us hope never to cross but knowing they're out there and that they're very good and responsive helps with what is admittedly a sea change in someone's life. Here's what I have appreciated so far about working with H3Assist: * The first time I called I reached Adam Kranson who took my call and arranged to meet with my mother and I the following day. * Neither my mother or I thought that she would yet qualify for the benefit on her long term care (LTC) insurance policy. Adam thought otherwise and talked us through his informed reasoning on applying for the benefit. * While meeting with us, Adam phoned my mother's LTC insurance provider and kick-started the process making the whole thing at least 1,000% easier on us. He knew the questions to ask, asked them, and got the ball rolling. That right there is an invaluable service. * Dipping your toe into this world is scary and life-changing. Adam helped with that. He listened, made recommendations, told us he could get my mother some help immediately but, since she didn't have an urgent need, would like 1 week to work to find the right fit of caregiver. * He found that right fit days later and returned to introduce her to my mom to see if the match felt right for the two of them. Nothing is ever perfect, especially when someone is forced to give up their independence, but I'm grateful and thankful that 3 months in things are working out well. * Adam has always been responsive to my phone calls and text messages. He even offered to drop by and check on my mom (on a regular basis, if needed) during the time between our first meeting and the time we had a caregiver fully on board. * Adam's intuition was right. My mom applied for and was approved for her LTC benefit. We are currently working through the waiting period for coverage. H3Assist has proved flexible and knowledgeable about how to best work through that without breaking the bank and I'm appreciative. I've been hesitant to write anything about H3 until after a bit of time elapsed as I wanted to ensure that my initial feelings about their level of service were on point. At this time, I have zero hesitation in recommending their services. There are no contracts to sign, they handle payments to the caregiver (and tax reporting, which is critical), and they're an absolute godsend when you find yourself in need of this type of help. We'd all like to believe that this'll never happen to us or our loved ones. Go ahead, keep believing in unicorns and bacon rainbows but remember H3Assist. Sh*t gets real faster than you can believe and when it does you'll want someone who takes the burden off of you. That's H3Assist. I cannot recommend them more highly.
