I'm a huge fan of Thai food - it's one of my favorite cuisines - but when I went vegan it became a lot more difficult to order my favorite foods. I was so excited to try this place after seeing lots of hype about it online. Let me tell you, it lived up to all the hype, and then some! My husband and I stopped in for takeout this weekend on our way to New Haven. We had heard a lot about the crab Rangoon so we ordered that as one of the appetizers. I haven't had crab Rangoon in over 20 years, and this stuff was INCREDIBLE! Tasted exactly like I remember it tasting, creamy, crunchy, and came with a delicious dipping sauce. I think this was my favorite dish and I'll definitely be ordering this every time I visit! We also got the crispy pork belly appetizer. I only got this because everyone was raving about how good it was, but I honestly didn't think I'd like it much because I never liked meat, even before going vegan. It turned out to be delicious! Somehow both super crispy and soft and chewy at the same time. It was a huge serving too! We also ordered the roti because it was my all time favorite before going vegan. Tasting it brought back so many good memories! It was chewy and flaky and came with a delicious curry dipping sauce. This will be a regular order for sure! Now on to the main course! I ordered the pad Thai because I can never get that vegan anywhere, and my husband ordered the pineapple fried rice, which is his favorite Thai dish. Both dishes were huge and gave us enough food for at least one other meal! My pad Thai came with tons of marinated fried tofu because I'm obsessed with tofu, but there's a huge selection of vegan meats to choose from like chicken, shrimp, duck, and beef (there are even more than that, this is just what I remember off the top of my head). My husband gets pineapple fried rice wherever we order Thai and he said that this was one of the best he's had. Finally, for dessert, I got the mango sticky rice. The mangos came super thinly sliced and beautifully arranged in a small rosette. I'd never had it prepared this way before and it was delicious! I wish I'd taken photos of everything, but it was dark out by the time we got to the area. Next time I'll take some and add them here! Middletown is a hike for me, and there are a ton of Thai places close to where I live, but this is the best I've ever had and I'll definitely be going back here as often as I can! I'm sorry it just wasn't good. I gave this restaurant a 2nd chance, and had the same result. The general Tao's chicken was too salty and the sauce tastes like it came right out the jar. Formerly a conventionally carnivorous Thai restaurant that, like all Thai-American restaurants, served fish sauce in nearly all of its traditional dishes, in March of 2023 its new owner and vegan chef converted the menu to veganism. Its new name, Aroy Thai Garden (note the singular), similar to its former name, Thai Gardens (note the plural), causes needless confusion. Thus some customers have posted their Yelp reviews and photos for the new restaurant under the acct of the older name. Puzzled and confused? So am I. Puzzle Number 2. It is heartening but also puzzling to be treated to two all-vegan restaurants both hosted in the middle of Middletown on its same Main Street. Can both survive each other's nearby competition vying for such a specialized clientele? Will one drive the other out-of-business, or will both be driven into insolvency? An odd business environment. Odd, too, is that both are closed on Mondays. No one needs an MBA to see the wisdom of being open on the very day when your direct competition is closed. Puzzle Number 3. The entrées on its online menu offer the choice of 4 kinds of rice, none of them brown rice, yet brown rice is listed as a side dish. If brown rice acts as a gold standard for a restaurant's food's nutritional merits, then this restaurant does pass such a test. As yet, the online menu provides no option to make a special request about each dish, for instance to choose the brown rice, so that is reason enough to order only in-person or on the phone, but with puzzlement. Puzzle Number 4. Mock meats predominate and fried foods abound. I shun both. Yet the menu is so extensive and varied that much still is offered with its array of wholesome vegetables as main courses. Except that the entrées of all veggies and no mock meats and no fried foods are scattered throughout the menu, like the scattered pieces of an incomplete jigsaw puzzle. It would be helpful if the all-veggie dishes were listed separately from all the other nutritionally questionable mock meats and fried foods. On three visits, I have persevered, but with puzzlement. Across my three visits, I have tried five such dishes of all veggies of the more than ten available, not counting the many curries, which are served more like soups. All were well prepared and tasty. The portions were all huge and filling, so you won't be alienated by the prices once you see what you are served. Yesterday was my third time here, during which I witnessed an interesting scene. Two "mixed gender" married couples, all nearing retirement age and clearly all old friends, walked in, sat down, and engaged in animated conversation while waiting for their waiter to appear. Upon his entry, he asked them if they knew that this was now a Vegan restaurant (unlike a year or more ago, when at least one of these four people was last were here). They said they did not know that. Without any discussion among themselves and almost without any hesitation, they all got up, and all walked out. I asked the waiter if that has ever happened before. Finally got here after having it on our must-try list and are so glad we did! Everything about this restaurant deserves five-stars so it's hard to decide where to start. From the second we walked in (with a two-year-old and a baby, it is very kid-friendly) the service and vibe was amazing. It was such a positive and upbeat environment it felt like we were there experiencing it with all the tables around us. My wife is a vegetarian so she loved having her pick of the entire menu. That also made it harder to decide from all of the options, so we relied on waiter recommendations -- and he nailed it. We went with vegan crab rangoon and fried pork belly for apps, and the crab rangoon was the star -- although our toddler couldn't get enough of the pork belly. For the meal, we split three entries. The Pad See Ew was my favorite, so flavorful, and the recommended vegan minced duck was perfect in it. The Larb was too unique to do justice with a quick description and a definite must-try. And the tuna teriyaki easily won for best presentation (with the table next to us immediately asking "what's that!?" when it came out). I have to be honest. I visit this restaurant with high hopes. I've been to a vegan Thai in NYC (spice moon, soo good). 1 the menu at this place is too much like 6 pages and confusing. I ordered the basil stir fry with fake pork. And for appetizer we ordered the fried mushrooms and fried wontons. My first gripe is the salt content was way too much in the entree. The veggies did not seem fresh and it was not good! The appetizers seemed premade and refried and were hella greasy. I barely ate my food and was sick with upset stomach and diarrhea. I hosted a party (13 people) for our family, to celebrate my granddaughter's college graduation. I was in contact directly with Josh on Saturday, to place the order. He spent a lot of time on the phone with me, as I wanted to accommodate the needs of a guest who required gluten free options. He was kind, patient, and knowledgeable. I would give him a 5 star rating. The food was outstanding. It was an honor to our graduate that she, a vegetarian, could eat everything on the menu! It was also helpful to those of us who keep kosher to know that we didn't have to worry about items we don't eat, as we would have problems in other restaurants. The food was ready on time. Whether you are vegan or not, you should check this place out. Absolutely incredible every time. The owner is an absolute gem and works so hard to make sure that everyone's experience is great. They always post updates or important info on social media which I find very helpful. The food is fresh, with very generous portions. Pick up is always smooth, and dining in service is great. Prices are extremely fair for the quality and amount of food you get. It is a great vegan spot!! read more

Do not order delivery from here. we ordered from direct site and food was not delivered correctly and when it was found 45 to 50 min later it was not safe to eat. noodles were all stuck together. the owner does not support the food after it leaves even on direct web site. My husband I came here for our anniversary-- we were staying in Middletown, and walked along Main Street until we saw something interesting, which ended up being Aroy. The food was delicious, and the wait staff were friendly and professional. They also left us alone enough for us to have good conversation, rather than interrupting every two seconds. The biggest gold star I can give them-- I had no idea it was a vegan restaurant. I had a rice bowl dish, and my husband had noodles, and we both raved about how good they were. It wasn't until we were leaving and making small-talk with the waiter that we realized it is a fully vegan restaurant. I was super impressed with the quality and taste of the food. read more

Treat yourself to an amazing experience at Aroy Thai Garden. As I walked through the door this powerful aroma of Jasmin rice and other herbs and spices filled my nose forcing a smile out of me. As I was being seated this feeling of excitement had me anxious to order. I got the fried spring roll with a chilli oil dipping sauce, pineapple fried rice and I forgot the name of the main dish I ordered. I consider myself a bit of a foodie everything I ordered exceeded my high expectations of Thai food, my mind was blown by these beautiful and delicious flavors. I thought to myself in all my years I've never tasted anything like this or anything this good. The decor allows you to experience a bit more of the Thai culture in addition to the food. If you are familiar with non-vegan Thai food then I would pass on this spot. I tried the pad thai with vegan pork. I can't say I'd order it again but I also knew this going in because vegan means no fish sauce or eggs (which are standard in typical pad thai). I think the noodles were fine but it lacked flavor. They also don't have a liquor license so needless to say, not heading back. I think 3 stars is more than fair. read more

The appetizers were excellent but we waited for over 1.5 hours for our dinner. We had ordered a salad that was very salty--we had to send it back because, we could not swallow it. I don't normally send food back but it was painful to swallow. Food was otherwise decent apart from the salty salad but the service was really lacking. First off - I am not vegan or even vegetarian. But this place has amazing food! I got to try many dishes as there was a buffet for a meeting I attended. Everything was delicious and I can't wait to go back. The owner and cook is Thai. She spoke briefly to our group and told us that all the recipes are her own. She takes great pride in her restaurant and rightly so! All the buffet dishes were either not "hot" at all, or only mildly spicy, but she did warn us that if you order spicy level 3 it will be REALLY hot. She wants everyone to leave happy, so if your dish is not to your liking, she requests that you tell the kitchen and they will re-do it for you, lower level of heat or whatever is needed. read more

Recently a friend of mine asked if I'd gone to Aroy Thai Garden yet because it was 100% vegan. I quickly looked up the menu online and made a reservation for my wife and I. We were totally blown away by the vast menu! It can be difficult to root out vegan options at most restaurants, but here it was the opposite--everything is fair game, so what to choose? My wife and I decided to just order a ridiculous amount of food and eat family style (and pack up the rest to take home). For starters, we ordered the Won Tons, Spring Rolls and Crab Rangoon. All were crispy and packed with delicious ingredients; the dipping sauces were rich with sweet and savory flavor. For our main entrees, we tried Khao Soi w/ Vegan Shrimp, General Tso's Tofu, Roasted Vegan Duck w/ Red Curry and Won Ton Soup. My wife gravitated toward the Won Ton Soup and GT's Tofu ; while I was hardly able to get a taste, I can tell you that both were extraordinary. The soup was loaded with umami flavor, and the balance of the rich broth, baby bok choy and impossible stuffed won tons was absolute perfection. Typically, General Tso's Tofu is not a Thai dish, but it was the best I've ever had...well maybe a close tie with China Pan's (RIP). The Tofu was super crispy, and the sauce was tremendous. I focused more on the other 2 dishes, simply because I'm more "curry forward" than my wife. The Khao Soi was so beautifully presented...loaded with noodles, veggies and crunchy strips of won ton. I opted to add Vegan Shrimp to the dish and it was heaven. The last time I had eaten real shrimp was over 30 years ago, so this was fantastic to have as a substitute. And while I did love the Khao Soi, and chose it based on the restaurant recommendation, I would say the stand-out for me was the Vegan Roasted Duck w/ Red Curry. It was everything I expected it to be, but everything turned up to another level of richness, texture and flavor. I'm a sucker for Thai Curries, and this one just made it to the top of the list. The addition of the Vegan Duck made it even better. I wasn't sure I would be into vegan duck, as I had never even had real duck in my life. But this filled my craving for a light, tender and flavorful protein. We brought home a dessert special of Chocolate Pudding w/ Coconut Cream and Oreo...we devoured it. Amazing. The bill was very fair for the amount of food we purchased, so there is also value there. The waiter and staff were accommodating and pleasant. (My wife made them all origami dollar bills as a token of thanks and good luck). We can't wait to go back to Aroy and begin chipping away at more items on the menu. It may take years to try everything, but the journey will be the best part of it. If you are a vegan or vegetarian, you should go here. It was our first time dining in at Aroy Thai Garden. We did take-out last year, and we were frequent diners at the old Thai Gardens at the same location. As non meat-eaters, we really don't dine out that often, because limited menu choices makes it less interesting. Having free run of an extensive menu was awesome. Everything we had was delicious, the service was a solid 11, maybe 12, on a scale of 1 to 10, and the prices were very reasonable. We would have bought a bottle of wine across the street if we had known they do not have a liquor license, but that will not be a problem next time. I would not hesitate to bring my open-minded carnivorous friends on future visits! read more

Would not recommend. We were told it would be about a 20 minute wait, which turned into over an hour. The one server was yelling at pick-up drivers and threatening to fight them. Multiple people came back while we sat and waited because their order wasn't complete. I should've double checked my order better because of this but we were so ready to leave once our food was finally ready, we realized we were missing items once we got home. If you're lucky enough to see her, she'll give you the best hug of your life. My only regret is that I don't live closer because I'd be there all the time. My wife and I attempted to dine at the Aroy Thai Garden (Middleton, CT) this week for the first time. It was a horrible experience. Where do I begin? Before ordering, I decided to wash my hands. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Because the bathroom was not that clean, I should have immediately realized this wasn't going to be a great experience.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Even though there were only a few patrons in the restaurant (most of the tables were empty), we were forced to wait more than 20 minutes before we were given our menus. While we waited, we were finally given glasses of water. The water had such a horrible taste that we both immediately switched to canned soda because we concluded the latter was safer. Regarding the actual meals, the restaurant's advertised prices are misleading. My 'Basil Chicken' lunch cost seventeen dollars, but then the restaurant added another two-dollar surcharge for the 'putative chicken'. A three-dollar surcharge was added to my wife's noodle dish for her 'putative shrimp'. After nearly an hour's wait, our food was finally delivered to us. We had not been given silverware and a napkin. We had to ask for them. The chicken was not real chicken and the shrimp was not real shrimp in our dishes as advertised on the menu. Instead, they were some unknown type of plant-based ingredient shaped into shrimp and slices of chicken. How the restaurant could have the audacity to charge its customers surcharges for phony chicken and phony shrimp escapes me. The restaurant states it serves vegan food, but it also states it serves chicken, pork, shrimp, and duck dishes. Check out its menu online. The latter claims are bogus. The food was so bad that we left without eating our meal. No refund or discount was offered. $50 for a horrible lunch. The Aroy Thai Garden is the worst Thai restaurant I have ever been to, and I have traveled all over the world. You have been warned. read more

Aroy is in the old Thai Gardens space, but it's all vegan! It's delicious-- I'm sure the things you can get at most Thai restaurants are great, but it's extra exciting to try things that are never vegetarian! I highly recommend the larb, Khao Soi, Thai BBQ Vegan Pork with Sticky Rice, Aroy Thai Garden Wrap (DIY rice paper wraps). Also the Bingsu dessert -- shaved ice sundae style was amazing and fun.
