I think that picking a frame shop is kind of like selecting a dentist - you know it won't be inexpensive, but whether you're talking about your teeth, or a piece of art that has sentimental or actual monetary value, you want to make sure the job is done right. Fortunately, Art Heads is relatively convenient for me, and since I spend a good part of every day looking at the results of their work, they do an excellent job. My art 'collection' is mostly made up of things that have purely sentimental value, but the details of their acquisition makes them irreplaceable. So, whether it's a poster that my wife bought on a sidewalk in NYC in the 1970's, or a tiny print that my daughter brought back from another country, there are things that I'm happy to trust to Art Heads, knowing they'll be well protected and look great on the wall. read more

Good shop with helpful staff but somewhat limited frame stock. We've had a couple of items framed there and for the most part were happy with their work. Art Heads is not inexpensive but does quality work. Since they seem to have a lot of orders and a somewhat small staff there was a fairly long wait for them to process one of our orders. They do give you an estimate as to when they think an order will be ready, so this isn't an issue of them being late. Just busy and honest enough to tell you. The staff is reasonably friendly and will give you advice about matting and colors if you ask for it. Overall very good shop. read more

My cat knocked over a treasured framed piece; not fine art but a valued family heirloom. I was devastated. The glass shattered and cut / scraped the print all over. Gabriel did a fantastic job repairing the damage and with fine attention to detail, colored in all the nicks and scrapes to the best of his ability. He did not necessarily need to do this as I'm told Art Heads is not a restoration shop. I asked him to call me before he started this restoration part of the job so I could see what it would look like and give the OK. He did call and consulted with me very respectfully in person before this touch up work began. He seemed to acknowledge that, while not extremely valuable art, it has sentimental value and was therefore worth the TLC he gave it. It is now on my wall and I can barely tell there has been any damage. In some ways it is in better shape than it was before. Art Heads is A-Ok in my book (yup, that's what Yelp says the three star rating means). I bought myself a really cool limited edition signed print of a Roots poster at Flatstock in Seattle last summer (if you've never been to Flatstock, you're missing out), and I needed to get it framed. It's no Monet, but it did cost me a nice little chunk of money, so I decided that rather than tack that shiz to the wall, putting countless little holes in the corners until one day the corners tear off completely, I should get it framed. Plus, I had a law school diploma and some other random stuff that should probably go in a frame someday, but the real focus was my $20 signed Roots limited edition print. So I go local. I go to the cool looking little framing shop called Art Heads on the corner of Hawthorne and 50th. I walk in with a 24xwhatever poster and ask about framing. I was not ready for what I was about to encounter. Guess why most people you know don't have anything in their house framed in anything other than cheap, store bought frames? IT'S FREAKIN' RIDICULOUSLY EXPENSIVE to have anything framed. I am talking, like, in the neighborhood of $200 to have a fairly basic, double-matte frame job done on my small diploma. YOWCH! I know that stupid piece of paper cost me over $100K to get, but shit, at that price I kinda feel like I should get a free frame or at least a 50% off coupon or something. Ok, so sticker shock done, I decided that I was only going to go with my top priority item today - the Roots poster. I opted for this cool dual-glass framing system where they custom cut 2 pieces of glass to fit the poster, then give you a system to clamp the glass together and hang the glass from a string. So essentially, for $50, I got two custom cut pieces of glass, some clamps, and a string. I had to put it together myself (hey, it saved me $25). So yes, these guys were conscientious and careful with my work when I brought it in. Yes, they can do all sorts of cool stuff like fix old photos that are stuck to the framing glass, and do fancy matted framing, etc. But hey, I don't have that kind of bling, and I am not sure why it costs so much anyway. Had I the cash and the drive, I would be framing everything in my house including the cat. But for my purposes, this was a wash. I spent more than twice the value of my "art" to get something that, while it looks cool and protects the art, does not even really count as a frame. So 3-stars it is. A-Ok. I can't gripe too much about pricing, because, well, it's probably industry wide. I just wish they had some reasonable discounted options for things like posters. Good people. I went back to Art Heads, since I had a second groupon to use. I was helped by an incredibly helpful person that seemed to care that I meet my goal of having my print framed but not have it be outrageously expensive. Since my 8x14 photo came to $114, I was quite nervous to see what framing an actual print would cost. He explained that the groupon was for custom framing, but if I wanted to go with standard framing, I could get a custom look with a range of gorgeous frames and mats for about $25. I am sssoooooo thrilled with the look of what we came up with and honestly, it looks like a really expensive, beautifully done piece. And he did it in about 1/2 hr. I'll use my groupon on something that needs a custom fit, and I won't complain anymore. PS- my little photo gets compliments every day. It cost a lot to frame, but people think it's art. I recently moved to this neighborhood and this is my first time using Art Heads. I came a couple weeks before Christmas to get a fine art print framed. I'm a photographer, so I've built my own and used a number of frame shops around town. I told them not to rush, as I didn't it by Christmas, as most of their other customers did at the time. They finished it about 6 weeks later, and beautifully at that. It was a little pricey, as largely dictated by the large print size, and the nice distressed wood frame and matte glass I selected. What impressed me was the way they backed the picture, with a nice paper covering, and with little pads at each corner and even over the eye hooks to prevent scratching the wall. From the initial layout to the end product, the staff is friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. These kids did a wonderful job on a tour poster I had them frame. Unfortunately when I ran my debit card their machine wasn't taking it so I had the lady ringing me up run my card as credit which worked..the lady told me I was punching in the wrong pin number. I don't think a shop should tell a patron that the patron had done the transaction wrong. Telling me I did it wrong just made me angry as I later found out it was my new magnetic money clip. This is a case of "the customer is always right". The patron should not be told they are "doing it wrong". The card worked as credit. That should be enough. "Doing it wrong" just made me angry. It's a shame as I've around 15 items to get framed for my place. There are so many other frame shops in town. Time to try a new shop. read more

I went in three different times dealing with 3 different people and never felt welcome. I was looking forward to supporting one of my neighborhood businesses (50th & Hawthorne), but instead I feel ripped off and bitter that I gave my money to so rude, inconsiderate people. Sorry I interrupted your day by coming in to your store. We ended up purchasing some frames at Fred Meyer that were equally attractive and less expensive. I dont have some horrific story, but I will say this. I wanted to have a cute picture framed for my boyfriend for his birthday. I paid for the groupon and though ok, I have had plenty of stuff framed before so my 130.00 credit should easily get the job done Oh no, far from it. It was another $80.00 on top of the 130.00 I already had, for a very simple black frame, no mat, nothing special, bottom line stuff for a 16x24. So It seemed outrageous considering, but some places are expensive, so I dealt with it. They told me it would be done a certain day, so I made the 1 hour drive in to pick it up and was told it wasnt ready yet after all. But the part that got me was it wasnt "im sorry, I wish there was more I could do" it was "well I guess you should have called first" and rudely too I might add. Overall, im sure they do just as good of framing as EVERYWHERE else that does custom framing. BUt unless your looking for unreliable service, rude service, and the kinds of prices that would be expected if having a Picaso framed, then yeah, check em out. read more

I had a great experience with Art Heads. Everyone I worked with was really helpful and patient in helping me make decisions. I was amazed they invested hours in helping me find just the right frame and matting. I'm very detail oriented and indecisive, so it took me a long time to make the decision, but they kept helping me through it. The store is also well equipped with a tilted mirror that lets you see what a frame will look like on the wall. Once I picked a frame, I was concerned the corners wouldn't line up well because the pattern's a busy, intricate one. The owner - Gabe - took extra measures to make sure they lined up beautifully, doing some hand filling and coloring that's indistinguishable from the actual frame. It looks great! (And that's coming from a perfectionist.) The frames can be pricey, but that seems the norm for custom framing. I was grateful for a 30% off coupon. read more

I love the service I receive at Art Heads and am always psyched by how my art looks after having it framed there. I have had four pieces framed at Art Heads and each time I feel like the job they did framing the pieces makes me feel like I have a whole new piece of art to take home. Their attention to color, texture, style, mood all matters when it comes to the decisions of what matting, framing and glass you consider. The help I get makes all the difference in the final outcome. What's more, the gentleman who helped me had toys for my son and a lot of patience with the two of us as we planned out the work. We were there well over an hour and were given his entire attention for the entire 60 minutes. Not only are all four pieces striking but it was all done with in a budget. Despite the fact cost was an issue, the matting and framing are beautiful and exactly what I had hoped for. I was also taught how to properly hang them according to the materials our walls are made of and the "look" we were going for. Extra mounting hardware was offered and installed so as to make this possible. Mounting wire was not available to A.H. but I was directed to the nearest store where I did find a wide variety of really pretty wire (Restoration Hardware). Finally, Art Heads was very careful to point out the important aspects of caring for lithographs. Never having owned any lithographs before, I was very ignorant and left feeling more informed about them. I have no doubt these beautiful lithographs are framed in such a way the work will be in excellent condition for the next generation. I cannot say it enough. I will continue to go to A.H. for framing and will make sure to tell everyone I know to go there as well. You won't be sorry. read more

There was a groupon for this company - I just wanted to get a basic idea of what my custom framing would cost to see it the groupon would be worth it. The man who answered the phone was incredibly short with me and pretty rude. He also quoted me over 100.00 what most other custom framer were saying. I will not ever use this company - I would rather forfeit money on the groupon and go to another company that has better customer service. This is a long one. Please read... Having had several framing experiences at numerous frame shops in Portland, I have to say this is THE WORST experience ever. Granted some of this is my own fault, the employees, manager and owner himself give the worst possible customer service and the poorest of business practices I have ever witnessed. Let me describe... I had to get a replacement piece of 16x24 conservation clear plexiglas for a frameless framed (ie: clip frame) photograph. I had become pretty dedicated to Art Media's framing department, but had decided to try Art Heads since they were closer and easier to deal with regarding parking and easy access while juggling twin toddlers. Not thinking that there would be much variance in price for just the plexi and not the framing itself, I walked in and ordered what I needed without asking the cost (my fault). The woman taking the measurements knew I was ordering it for a frameless frame. She saw the piece sitting right in front if her. She went to the back and cut the piece, came out, wrapped it up (didn't offer to put it together for me) and rang me up. A SHOCKING $75 FOR THE PLEXI! Yikes! Totally my own fault for not asking first, I paid for it and left the store in horror. Just to confirm my belief that I had been robbed, I got home and called Art Media immediately. Just as I had remembered, they quoted me $30 for the same product. I then called Art Heads to place a complaint about the cost and try to return it. I didn't think it would be possible since it was a custom cut, but thought perhaps they would at least apologize and try to price match. Nope. No apology, and at first - no price match. Not until I called a second time and said that I wanted to speak to the manager was anything ever done to rectify the situation. Did they call ME back? NO. I called back after 3 hours of not hearing anything. He (the owner) allowed a $50 in store credit. Not what I was looking for, but at least this made up the price difference. Not happy, but fairly satisfied. The next day... I decided I would put the picture behind the plexi and get this expensive thing up on my wall. I peeled the paper off the plexiglas only to discover the cut edges were chipped to hell and back. It looked awful. There was no way this would look good in a frameless frame because you see all of the edges. Extremely irritated at this point, I took it back. I walked in and told the same woman that the edges were chipped and showed them to her. Did she apologize? NO. Did she make excuses as to why that happens with plexiglas? YES. I have had plexiglas cut before and have had smooth edges every time. There is a saw you can use instead of the cutter. She did not offer anything, so I left it all there and told her to contact her boss, the owner, whoever, to sort out how they were going to settle this and to contact me when they figured it out. If they were incapable of making a clean cut for a frameless frame, they should have informed the customer of this before cutting and perhaps suggested something else. If they knew that the cost was pretty significant, they should have informed the customer before making the cut. THEY SHOULD HAVE INFORMED THE CUSTOMER OF THE COST BEFORE MAKING A CUSTOM CUT, REGARDLESS! 2 DAYS LATER... I CALLED THEM. I immediately asked for the manager. I explained who I was and he said the owner was not willing to budge since it was a custom cut and asked if I was told about the $50 store credit. I said I didn't want to shop at a store that was going to inevitably rip me off. He said again that the owner was not willing to budge. I told him this was poor business practice to which he responded "We've been in business for a long time". FUMING at this point. I simply said I wanted to speak with the owner. He said he would call Bob and have him call me. Did Bob call me? Of course not. From the beginning, it was apparent that "Bob" just wanted me to go away. He showed this by not contacting me at all to try to resolve this matter. The manager called me back and said that Bob was going to just eat the cost and give me my money back. About time they did something somewhat right. It's a shame that it didn't save them from this horrendous review. read more
