This is a fun local art supply store! They even offer used products for sale which is nice when you don't need/want a full tube of paint. The store feels a little cramped and disorganized when you are used to shopping at corporate stores. The staff though are amazing and willing to help you find things. The prices are reasonable! The parking can be rough to find as they have no lot but if you are willing to walk a block or two you will be good. read more

I've been visiting I've been Framed for years. They carry a lot of the same things you'll find in a "regular" art store, but oooo this place is far more fun than the others. Long ago you used to be able to find big discounts on used things...now the discounts are just not as deep as they used to be. (one star off for this, sometimes something used should have a better discount than it does, be careful of paying nearly full price for something that should have a better discount). Despite this, there can still be some cool finds like out of publication books and old time-y paint boxes. Do yourself a favor, next time you need a pen or brush buy it here. Okay, I admit that the last time I shopped here was pre-COVID, but I believe they are back open now for in-person shopping. Yay! (Please call the store to find out for sure and their current rules before visiting.) And while I haven't yet had anything framed here yet, shopping for art supplies here is so fun! They have such an eclectic mix of items, I'm always inspired and end up with at least one thing I didn't expect to buy. It's like a treasure hunt! Went for a brainstorm/design advice (super good) and get low cost supplies. Needed a solution for Sun glare through a door window. I left with 2 hacks (no drilling line & rod) and 1 paint experiment (stain glass tint). Happy with the solution. Total supplies, $2 dowel rod, $4 for 3M removable, no residue hooks. I may still play with staining the glass for fun, but this took all of 30 minutes (my stitches are so rough). I can return the supplies I didn't use for store credit. More Sweet, sweet stickers. Also picked up supplies to test making fridge magnets. So, basically, the people there rocked it again for me. Last time was mattes and DIY framing. read more

An interestingly quirky store, to be sure. We had a re-frame job and the g/f suggested IBF due to it's proximity to our neighborhood. I'm sure that we've passed by here hundreds of times but until you go in, you can't appreciate the quantity and quality of their offerings. As many have said before, both their new and slightly used supplies are plentiful and fairly priced, especially when compared to other art retailers. Seth, Matthew and the rest of the staff frequently take great care of me, often on short notice. Covid has made them available by appointments only, and increased their workload. They've done wonderful work for me from cutting mats and mounting artwork, to cutting down frames to custom sizes. I would recommend I've Been Framed for anyone who is looking to frame art to conservation standards on a budget. They may not have all the exotic moulding and matboard choices you could find at a boutique framing shop, but they more then make up for that with their prices and pre-joined frames made from real wood...not big box store prefabs. This has been my go-to for art supplies and I am a full-time painter. The pandemic was (is) going on and businesses were all closing and the order hadn't been given yet to shelter in place but this wonderful shop put out to email if we needed to pick up supplies before they had to close. I emailed and she said I could pick them up and she'd have them. She stayed there for my small order for me to get there and pick it up even though it wasn't much $. She recommended it because of the fair prices and ability to purchase discounted used supplies (e.g., partial tubes of paint at a proportionately reduced price). This place is FULL of fun stuff! All sorts of arts and crafty things, brushes, paper, etc etc. Lots of things were priced inexpensively, so it encouraged a beginner like me to expand my toolkit a bit. Very very helpful and accommodating staff that time after time listens to what I want to do and is able to suggest an inexpensive way to achieve it. The people in the framing dept. are always very friendly and helpful as well. Earlier this month I asked around looking for a nice, cheap, locally owned arts & crafts store and the only place that more than 2 people recommended was "I've Been Framed" on SE Foster and Powell in the rather unfortunately named PoFo neighborhood (I know, it's supposed to be FoPo, but PoFo is funnier). Getting there can be a little tricky as it's located near a church on this funky triangle-like piece of real estate that is difficult (possibly illegal) to turn into if you're coming southbound on Foster, but parking isn't too bad. I was looking for some poster board to make signs for my favorite roller derby team (yes I'm a derby geek, HH '08), but didn't want to hit the big box shops like Michael's, and since I'm not a supercrafty guy, I wasn't sure where to go. Admittedly, I had simple requests, but the staff at I've Been Framed pointed me in the right direction and their paper products are like, "fell off a truck", "I know a guy, who knows a guy", cheap. They helped me pick which material and finish would be best for writing on with a sharpie or poster paints, and I walked out of there with like 20 big ass poster boards and a couple fresh sharpies for under $10! It seemed like their focus was on painting with all the different papers, poster boards, etc in different dimensions, and they also sold paint brushes. They also do custom picture framing, but I didn't check that service out. If you're an artsy-crafty type person, and haven't already sworn allegiance to another shop, check out I've Been Framed for crazy cheap products from a locally owned store. read more

I get stuck at the light where Foster and Powell meet up on a daily basis. I anxiously tap the steering wheel. The clicking of my blinker sounds like a grating orchestra. Basically, I have road rage and a disdainful affinity for yellow lights. But one thing that's always distracted me from my frustration at this particular intersection is the building for "I've Been Framed". The windows are lined with alluring craftiness that beckon me to drive right over the road barrier and into the loving embrace of all that is artsy fartsy. For some reason, it was not until recently that I finally made it through the doors, without actually partaking in any illegal driving maneuvers, and got to fully enjoy all of the wonders that are held within the frame store walls. Professional level art supplies, ranging in a dizzying plethora of medias; calligraphy/ letter-writing/ journal supplies; how-to drawing guides; and oodles of beginner's tools. Whether you want to build a scrapbook or cover the house in glitter or feed your rainbow Sharpee addiction, this place has you covered. Some of my favorite finds are the "stained glass" dragons and wizards coloring books and the gift bags that're great for kids whether those kids love pirates or neon markers. The pricing is hit-or-miss. Some really great finds and some slightly over-priced goodies. But I have to say, I'm super stoked about my battery-operated pencil sharpener in its sleek burgundy shell. And it was less than $4. My pencils are all now lethal ninja pointy goodness. Comments have been made about the staff in other reviews. I don't want to nay-say a good local art store, but the rumors are true. No one seems too happy to be there and the walls cringe with gossip. That being said, I guess it's a good thing I'm not going there for the company or conversation. But man, those fancy pens sure are perdy. read more

Look: 20% off you poor S.O.B.!! so, i have definitely been to my share of art stores. i moved to portland earlier this year after living in san francisco for 17 years. over time in the Bay Area, i saw one independent/private art store bite the dust after another. it made me sad. it made me woeful. it made me loathe buying my art supplies from Big Box Stores, one in particular who i am not going to mention based solely on the fact that i don't want to promote it by even uttering it's name. enough about that. art stores are SPECIAL and unique places within the creative community. they should contribute actively and genuinely to their patrons, amateur and professional alike. this is a store like that. can you get the same things at a big box store? most likely yes. however, i was told by the staff they would order something specific if i needed it. can you procure an item at a big box store cheaper. MAYBE. HERES THE THING: 1. the price you see at i.B.F. is the ACTUAL PRICE. none of this "suggested retail price/ B.S. 'SALE'" weird marketing nonsense you get at the Big Guys. 2. if you want to get a comparable price...CHECK in using your Yelp account. you get 20% off!!!! woohoo! AND you get to support local business, which we (meaning EVERYONE IN THE UNIVERSE -except Dick B.) loves. you can get used art stuff too, which is great for a multitude of reasons. i like this place a lot. if you go, you will probably like it too... unless you are a terrible human being. nothing can help you I'm afraid. read more

I discovered this place relatively recently, and could not be happier to have stumbled across the existence of such a store. It is SO much cheaper than any other store I've found in Portland, with a great variety and supply to choose from. I get completely lost wandering around in here, because everything is so affordable it makes me want to tackle all of my future projects all at once! Art stores are my kryptonite, and this place is no exception. Sometimes I literally have to bolt in and out, because otherwise I will pause and end up with ten things I don't really NEED but very much WANT... it's just right there, and sooo cheap! Just an example... but a pad of fifty pound sketching paper that ran at least $21 elsewhere [school store, Joann's, my XX neighborhood store] was only $11 here. Score! Soooo not only do they have a plethora of quality and affordable art supplies, but they also run a great framing service. I went in with a budget, and there were tons of great options. The man that helped me was understanding, patient, and helped me to find a great frame that really worked with my painting. It took a few weeks, but I wasn't in a hurry... they did a great job, and I'm very happy with the results. I'm happy to find a place that does quality custom framing, and treats you like a human even if you aren't spending an arm and a leg on it. I'll definitely be back when I need more framing done, and highly recommend it to others! read more

The best place for a panicky artist! I try to plan ahead and not wait until the last minute, but the best laid plans find me at IBF two hours before I'm supposed to drop off a piece for a show. They set me up with a cut mat, a frame kit with glass, and some gentle energy so I could meet my deadline. Great staff, excellent selection and local. Shop here and be happy! read more

Waaaay awesome find! I happened to be driving by and spotted this amazing art supply store. I love that it's not in a super congested area and parking was easy to find. I also loved the used/scrap/discount offerings that were out front. Great place to stock up on paint brushes! They have a wide selection of inventory to fit almost any art need. I didn't see any fiber art stuff (yarn,etc) or much in the way of what I would consider soccer mom scrap book-y stuff. Can't wait to return and discover new things. read more

I normally shop at a different local store and hit up the chain store only when in dire need. In this case, I had just been to the chain store pricing out basics when I came across I'VE BEEN FRAMED. I literally had prices in hand from the other store so I knew that the price difference in oil paints was over 45% than what I'd just seen. I've Been Framed also had a much bigger and better quality selection. Their gallery style primed for oils canvas' were also 56% cheaper than what I had just seen in Michael's! The primed canvas at I've Been Framed was actually cheaper than the unprimed canvas at the chain store and also beat out the other local art store by $10! They also had a great selection of brushes available at some great prices. And, as an extra bonus, they carry a large selection of locally made items and feature these items prominently in the store. The only con I found is that while the prices are amazing for common items, some of the higher end paints and brushes weren't as cheap as hoped for. Although comparable to most other small, local art stores, don't expect to get Graham paints any cheaper than what you may have seen elsewhere... but there's always hope for a sale! As I was told, they happen all the time and, since the price of nearly everything else is at least a few bucks cheaper than any other place, it's well worth making a trip in. read more

Great selection! Great prices! I usually go here specifically for framing supplies, but I have bought a couple other art supplies. The framing staff are always uber hip dudes who aim to please. Just tell 'em what you need and they are on it. They even usually give you a time estimate of when your stuff will be ready. Only once a friend of mine had some mat board cut to specific dimensions and they were not exact and the edges were jaggedy(change the blades guys!). I am from Hillsboro and I go to Portland State, and I still drive even further to hit this place for the framing needs. read more

I'm giving this place 5 stars and I haven't even received my custom frame yet. I was totally blown away by this place's warm and extremely knowledgeable service. The gentleman who helped me pick out a frame for my piece was very helpful in that he laid out all options for me and genuinely wanted to give me something that wouldn't break the bank. I'll do an update when I get the actual frame but I'm confident that all will be perfect:) This place has a HUGE selection of art supplies - oils, acrylics, ink, drawing, canvas, paper, book binding materials - and they are very decently priced compared to most art stores. What I loved most is that in each section they also have bargain baskets where you can buy partially used tubes of oil, acrylic, etc., paint and they're priced according to how much has been used. This is awesome since some brands can be very expensive and you might not want or have the need for an entire tube of a certain color. And they do carry many reputable art brands.
