Selection is excellent. We were looking for a backsplash tile and went to a few stores as well as ordered 3-4 samples online. We were impressed with the selection here. They had zellige, talavera, and custom order artisanal tiles. Price is OK not good. On one tile I was interested in, the quote here was ~$20/sqft while it was ~$15/sqft at another local store. Service is OK. For one tile we were interested in, there were no samples and it took a few weeks before one was available. read more

I recently remodeled our bathroom. For the bathtub walls, I knew I wanted an accent wall, book-ended by two large format walls of a very simple tile. A plumber recommended I go by Oakland Art Tile - I'm so glad I did. I found many beautiful tiles that I was so grateful to see in person. They had a large selection, and I immediately fell in love with what we now have as our feature wall - a ~2.5"x8" tile with a soft blue/white ombre-type effect. It's beautiful! They also had a large format tile that beautifully complements the smaller tile. I called to see if they carry a specific brand of tile. She'd never heard of the brand, and asked me to send a website. I sent a URL showing the tile. She said we don't work with that distributor. I said the website was random, I was inquiring about the BRAND of tile, not the distributor. She said I should call another store because they don't work with that distributor. Nothing could deter her from saying this over and over again. She may understand how the tile world works, but she couldn't handle communicating about the difference between a distributor of tiles and a specific brand of tile. While they have a nice selection of tile, their customer service leaves something to be desired. I ordered tile from them which was picked up by my contractor. Art Tile quite clearly ordered the wrong tile. My contractor misunderstood what I wanted and therefore didn't recognize that the incorrect tile had been ordered. When the error was discovered 2 months later, Art Tile did absolutely nothing to help rectify the error relying on their policy that errors have to be reported within 30 days. Admittedly the mistake was in part mine (thus 2 stars), but they didn't lift a finger to help other than to suggest that the incorrect tile could be donated. I expect a lot more from a vendor. Also, beware that they charge 3% to pay by credit card. read more

Don't waste your time going anywhere else. Marta and staff were not only really pleasant but soooo easy to work with. Going in, we pretty much had our mind made up on colors and types of tiles, however, Marta it abundantly clear that there were so many more options to our very small guest bathroom remodel. She took the time to sit down with us for an hour choosing styles and options and at the end of our session I was more than happy to place our order, which by the way, is supposed to arrive within 4-5 days from our original consultation. I went to Art Tile just to try and find some little decorative colorful border trim. I had already decided to put white subway tile in, but wanted to spruce it up a bit. Art Tile had exactly what I was looking for, an assortment of different styles and a wide selection of colors to choose from. My contractor and I measured carefully how much we would need in linear feet and ordered a little extra. When I went to pick it up, Art Tile had given me 2 extra ones. Very nice! Good thing they did as we ended up needing all but one. Would have been a hassle if we were short one tile as it takes 2 weeks to make them. Hint, if your design has a lot of corners, order even more than you think. Turned out great, check out the photos. And, everyone is very nice and helpful in the shop. read more

I am remodeling my bathroom and needed to pick out tile for the shower. Astonishment propels me to drop some praise this way, that no one else has spoken up for the little shop on Broadway. Our home is a 90-year-old tiny bungalow with Craftsman pretensions but none of its true charms. It had been a rental and thereby poorly used, although not severely abused. However, much needs to be done, and the tiny bathroom was the first major project. Leaks and poor layout aside, the yellow and black tile were beautiful, but could not be salvaged. "Surely," I thought, "how hard could it be to find tile faithful just like this?" Extremely. Fricking. Hard. Who knew? Who knew that probably lead paint and other toxins imparted that lustrous tint? Who knew that plain tile had the monochromatic charm of a lavatory? Who knew modern mass tile-makers think "crackles" add character, and instead look like calculated attempts to be precious? Okay, maybe you all know, but I went through the whole raised-in-an-immigrant-family-squeezed-in-tiny-apartment-then-condo experience. The nuances of the house, I know not. So I went from tile place to tile place -- all very decent, all with variety. Import Tile in Berkeley. Berkeley Ceramic Tile. Italics outlet warehouse in Emeryville. Lowes in Union City. Expo in Emeryville. Tumbled stone. Glass mosaic. Subway bricks. On and on and on. Yet, nothing came close to the yellow tile I allowed to be torn from the walls and smashed to bits. And then i went to Art Tile, and bloated the tiny budget on some gorgeous pale-celadon tiles handmade in Seattle. I have blocked out how much the husband and I spent. Suffice to say that our tiny bathroom is the best room in the house. Admittedly, it's not saying much, but the tile rocks. We also scattered around the window tiles with a fish or lotus design. Art Tile also carried the compromise that resolved a point of contention between the husband and me: I wanted wood a la the old bungalows, he didn't want warping. Voila, ceramic tile that looks like wood. I crap you not. The darker shade we picked doesn't look cheap or a half-assed imitation -- the floor looks like a wood floor. And yes, the customer service was excellent. No pressures, no hard sells, no psycho-therapy. Just matter-of-fact expertise. read more

I usually hate shopping retail... this is an exception. Please give Art Tile your business if you are doing interior design or a remodel. The Selection is good, The service is awesome. It's a tile store, pretty unassuming from the outside. Inside, you feel like you have gone back in time or have been mysteriously teleported to a state where people still believe in courtesy and customer service. We went in with a vague idea of what we wanted, they sent us home with sample boards and tiles (no charge, no hassle), were very informative and even offered advice on how to bridge our period house with the present. I wish there was more tile "in context" settings, but they have a small space and a lot of inventory. I'm going to shop here again. read more

We recently decided to re-tile our upstairs bathroom, and made a first pilgrimage to Import Tile to look at the options and figure out what we wanted to do. Import Tile, of course, has a lovely showroom and a lot of tile to show, but they definitely lack on the personal touch. You get a different person every time, and they vary from helpful to horrible. Our tile guy (Paul Gilbert of Gilbert Tile, who we love) heard our plans and told us that there's a new tile shop much closer to our house that would carry everything we're looking for. So the following weekend we popped on over. We met the owner, Patrick, who walked us through our various ideas and thoughts and was incredibly attentive, helpful, and kind. We left, and decided that whatever tile we were going to get, it would be from Art Tile, because the entire experience was so *pleasant*. A few weeks later, we were ready to order, and stopped by and worked with Gary, who was chatty, kind, and helpful. 80% of our tile was in stock at their warehouse a couple of blocks away, the rest arrived three days later. Jason, at the warehouse, was super attentive, helpful, and nice. They loaded up our car, and called & emailed us a few days later when our remaining tile arrived. It turned out we ordered a little too much of one of the special order tiles. They looked up what the tile maker charged them in restocking fees, and that's what they charged me to return it. Just what it cost them. Totally fair. We will definitely return here next time we need tile! read more

Patrick took his time and helped me understand the different options to re-design my fireplace. Looking at my current fireplace design and dimensions, he suggested different textured stone tile and porcelain options to fit the look and feel of my house, matching different color stone tiles to match my Brazilian honey cherry wood mantles and floors. I needed to replace a few tiles in my 1958 era bathroom. I came to Art Tile (thanks, Yelp, for letting me know who to go to). I didn't bring a photo or a sample tile. I simply described the tile I needed, mentioned the year I think the bathroom was installed, and within 30 seconds, the guy behind the counter handed me a sample board of the exact tile! Impressive. The tile was a fair price, and took about a week to arrive. When I'm ready to redo the old bathroom, I will be buying my tile here.
