We had a lot of extra tiles from a kitchen remodel that we couldn't return to the original store. So we brought them to Building Resources. They were very happy to get so many new boxed tiles. This place is a wonderland of home supplies you're looking for and everything you never knew you wanted. Perfect stop for hard to find Victorian fixtures, from light switches to door knobs. I scored a $25 solid brass pendant light, 100 yr old matching door for my home, glass door knob, and some beautiful blue stones for the garden. They take donations, you get a receipt for your taxes. Need a toilet? How about 50 of them? Fireplace frames, chandeliers, patio furniture, sinks, mannequins (a must have for the home), boxes & boxes of tile. The woman and man that were on staff there that day were very helpful, and pointed me in the right direction. One thing i do miss is that there is not as muich stuff, it seems. Got item from this junk yard, asked attendant at least twice whether returns were accepted, they said yes, we do, just bring it within 30 days, cool, after 2 days returned with item cause it didn't fit, so asked same person for my refund, this time he says that he had forgotten to tell me that now cause a new business administration there is no refunds but STORE CREDITS. So beware they'll hide this fine print from you, so you pay for their junk and leave asap! in the end it's just a junk yard! read more

I love this spot. It's such a great place to look for reclaimed materials for all of your home projects, craft ideas and art projects. It can be pricey, especially the tumbled glass, but it's very worth it to me to visit and if nothing else... walk away with ideas, inspiration and some treasure. Not much else to say, wear closed toe shoes for your safety please and this is not somewhere I would bring children who don't know how to curb their enthusiasm. read more

Unique place. Located in an industrial part of San Francisco, but felt quite safe. Most of it is outdoors, except for lighting etc, so little Covid risk. They happily give you a receipt for your fully tax deductible donation- it's kind of like Goodwill in that way. read more

So unreliable. After 15 calls and detailed emails we got a confirmation that they would take our reusable materials. So we hire someone to take the times out to them and they refused to take them. Now we have things going to the landfill that are reusable. If they had been clear up front we could have worked with Habitat For Humanity and someone would have benefitted. Do not rely on these guys. Their response and sense of accountability is awful. I feel so bad about perfectly good materials being thrown in the landfill :-( read more

This used to be my favorite scrapyard for refurbishing and redoing the details in my apartment. The staff (with the exception of a few) used to be really friendly, negotiable, reasonable and helpful, but recently with the barrage of designer shows and HGTV, the catering to yuppies has taken over. You can't blame them for their success...thats how it just is. Used doors that used to cost 10-20 dollars now go for 40-60, window panes before 5-10 dollars now 45-60. Regardless the yard has the best selection here in San Francisco. You'll find old store fixtures, counter tops, plumbing, tiles and marble, doors, windows, trade show booths, stages, chairs, iron gates, lighting fixtures, and so much more to list for an artists or DIY's imagination. Prices are negotiable, but word to the wise, if you roll up in a hummer dressed like a hip clubbing elitist expect to pay top $$$$$$ read more

Most items are really well organized, but you'll find unsorted carts here and there (just make sure they aren't someone else's shopping cart!). They take donations 7 days a week, and will give you a receipt for it. As long as it's something usable and in decent condition, they will most likely take it. There's a list of items that they cannot accept, so check their site first if you're unsure. Just like a lot of places like this.. things are out in the open, so expect them to be dirty and or covered in water/dust. Easy fix! Bring some gloves, and happy digging! read more

I've been coming to this place for a number of years but think I'm done with it. The inventory is good and you can usually find what you need for any project. My problem is with prices, more exactly with price setting policy or the lack thereof. You ask how much a thing is, you get locked over from head to toe, you get mentally classified on some scale from "struggling artist" to "yuppie", and then the price is named. Maybe this is B.S. but I've lately started to feel that I'm being taken advantage of because I look like I can pay a higher price. If there was a price tag with $X on it, I'd pay it. But if $X comes out of thin air and is suddenly non-negotiable then I say "fuck this!" - you loose a customer. read more

Oh maybe some certain individual that likes to assess your financial stability before pulling a price tag out of his ass. That bearded dude (Dan?). The price tag comes out of his mouth and out of nowhere. I can get same deal at Lowe's few blocks down! And if you try to find another employee to help you he gets pissed. Fuck you!! I'd been looking for cheap sources of material for a large art project and found this place through the very helpful links provided on the SCRAP website (http://www.scrap-sf.org/ - also a very cool place for cheap arts/crafts supplies). This place is 'found' gold, and I found at least some of what I needed here. Building Resources specializes in reclaimed construction elements, from doors to ducting. There are slabs of granite and marble, desks, lounge furniture, small plastic terrariums, lumber. Inside, there are big bins full of tumbled sea-glass of different colors. Each corner you round in the barely-organized yard offers new possibilities beyond whatever you actually came there for, and the semi-active waterfront setting, with trains and concrete trucks trundling though from time to time, is evocative and stimulating. Go on a sunny day even if you don't have a reason. It'll feed your creative beast. read more

Organized dumpster diving! if you like leaving your projects half to chance and random materials this is perfect. The random knickknacks there might even serve as more inspiration. What? A crate of traffic light lens?? Why yes I'd totally clean them up and grid them on my white wall. Buckets of broken colored glass, tile, or mirror sold by the pound! Perfect for coloring terrariums. For the chaos this place could be it is very well organized. Each materials is divided up by aisles and corners. You could easily spend hours and still not upturn everything. I have found everything from wood to plant pots to fasteners, records, windows, lighting and furniture. I'm about to start shopping for a door and B.R. is the only place I will need to look. This place is simply the type of spot that everyone should know about. It's a not for profit organization that recycles building materials of most all kinds. Rates are very fair and the staff are super kind, knowledgeable and real. They also tend a beautiful garden and have a great vibe to go along with the builders' wonderland of possibilities. This is my favorite salvage yard in the city. Fine, it's the only salvage yard I've been to in the city. But I love it! It doesn't always hold the treasures I'm hoping for (rusty old iron gates, broken chandeliers - these things get snatched up too quickly I imagine), so minus a star. But plus four for having all sorts of OTHER awesome and affordable things! My fish love their new tumbled glass pebble interior. And even though the table I tried to make out of those cool bannister spindles was a wobbly disaster, I loved the attempt. Even better is the "work off your parking ticket" plan. That's right! I love this place. I go here for work and personal projects. i maintain a very old victorian and have managed to find locks and keys here. old architectural pieces, old machinery, a glass buffet of different colored/ textured glass, lighting, the list goes on. Unlike its larger sister company salvage doesn't suffer from inflated prices. In fact the staff is so kind and very reasonable. I come back here whenever i can. My only complaint would be, i wish they were larger and had more of the great discarded furniture san francisco has to offer, but thats hardly their fault. read more

Whenever I really like a place, I have a hard time being succinct, so here's a list. 1. Amazing pretty succulents (not for sale)! 2. A neat rocking couch one of the employees had made. 3. Lovely view of the sewage plant...I kid. 4. Nice, friendly employees. 5. A really pretty, decorated, clean bathroom--cool light fixtures they've collected adorn the walls. 6. All kinds of parts for things I couldn't begin to describe. 7. Doors, windows, furniture. 8. Random finds--like bathroom signs and old traffic lights. 9. Plus 0.5 star for being a non-profit and reducing, reusing, and recycling, but service here was terrible on 2 visits just a few days apart. They do have an amazing array of items new and used, but only if you have unlimited time and a friend to help if you are getting heavy stuff. I understand that it's a pick-n-pull kind of place, but it was just about impossible to find someone to help or ring up my purchase. You seem to follow them in circles around the maze of a yard if you can even figure out who is working here. I got great prices on what I bought, and when I talked to one person, he led me to believe someone would help me load up my hefty purchase. Today was my first time coming here and although the area is a bit sketch I absolutely love this place! It's a treasure trove of windows, sinks, doors, old tools and other assorted awesome things. Make sure you wear something you don't mind getting dirty because the property is on dirt and everything has a good dusting of it. I spotted some great shutters/doors that I'm gonna go back for once I get a bungie cord but walked out with a large portion of antique looking knobs, screws, and small shutters for 20$. Not a bad deal. Would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking to be handy but be prepared to haggle for larger items. read more

Went in search of some salvaged wood to furnish a dining room table - left with a great sturdy old door that works wonderfully... The selection is a bit limited, and you wont find some of the strangeness that exists at other larger salvage yards.. but it is the closest one to San Francisco and it gets some credit for that. If your looking for hardware, lumber, doors, glass, etc.. dont need large quantities and aren't too picky, come here. The staff is rather friendly and certainly helpful too... though dont expect the massiveness of urban ore by any means. this place can be covered on foot in 15 minutes or less. read more

Ooh, pretty good! The prices were lower than Ohmega in Berkeley, and the selection isn't as overwhelming as Urban Ore. I got two heavy wooden chairs that say "property of the state university of iowa" on the back, a trunk, and a wagon for $100. I showed up 15 minutes before they closed, and they weren't rude about it, although I did do my best to get out of there asap and let the employees go home. read more

The staff is extremely friendly. I needed a huge pane of glass for a documentary I was shooting, but I didn't have a truck to transport it. They let me borrow it for half an hour and shoot out on the street and return it after. Even helped me carry it out. Easy location and ample parking. Highly recommended. read more

Make sure you know what stuff is worth. They'll gouge you on anything that looks "antique" or "rare", even if it's just junk. This is probably in keeping with their mission statement. (It also means you can find some real bargains, if you stick to building materials and avoid the glamour items.) It's too bad real estate is so expensive here.
