I went to Cal Tile and everyone was very helpful and informative. I was looking for shower tiles and their prices are competitive. While I did not end up buying my tiles here, I decided that I would return if I ever had a need. I already had a contractor for my project - retiling a shower bathroom floor. However, that contractor ended up not working out. We were back at square one. I called Cal Tile to get an estimate - this time, the estimate for my project was DOUBLE the estimate I was given in the store, just 2 months earlier. I was shocked. When I told the person on the phone about the difference, he didn't have much an answer nor did he seem to care. Everyone recommends getting a few different quotes for your project. I just didn't expect to get different quotes from the same company. read more

I found the work to be great, but the price was outrageous. I had a simple job in my bathroom - replacing peal and stick tiles and baseboards (with some extra caulking around the bathtub). I supplied the materials and it was less than 60 square feet. The cost was $1400, which I thought was high, but I didn't realize how high when the work was completed in about 3.5 hours. I thought there must be a mistake as I didn't think I should be charged $400/hour. I called Calvin and he said they charge by the job, not by the hour, and apparently, replacing stick tiles and baseboards cost $1400, regardless of the size of the job. He reluctantly gave me $200 off the price, bringing their hourly rate down to a mere $357 an hour. I feel ripped off. read more

I realize that we are in the midst of Covid 19, but, if you don't know what you want, I would not recommend going here, unless, you know exactly what you want. I could not touch the tile, and I had to look at one sample tile at a time. Would give 4.5 stars if allowed. Loved the store - really needed a quick solution to meet our schedule. I have been looking at tiles online and stores in Oakland and Berkeley. One look at Yelp and I found Cal Tile - and the exact tile in the color I needed for the project on their website. Ran to the store in Alameda and they were extremely helpful in helping us order quickly and providing the right amount of tile and style of grout needed. I was able to order the same day with a next day delivery. One downside is the fee to bring the tile from Sacramento - did not have this online or in another store unless expediting delivery. I feel the cost should be included in the price of the tile vs an add-on. Definitely advise calculating the delivery fee when shopping tile pricing. read more

Yes, we could have paid less at the big box store, but the proprietor here patiently answered all of my questions about tiling and was very knowledgeable because he was a former tile contractor. I just happen to drive by and saw some tile display in front of the store, i basically just want to buy some good quality grout for the tile that i bought from elsewhere, i was looking around and notice their tile are mostly from Italy, and the price are comparable to other high quality tile that made in china, i ending up purchase some more tile from them. beside that Steven and Calvin are super nice and patient, they will explain to whatever question you might have, also they can give you some good advise, great customer service, i will go back if i need anything done to my flooring. read more

I went to Cal tile in alameda. I spent an hour after I selected the tiles explaining to the salesperson how much I needed for the bathroom walls, bathroom floors, shower floor. I had the sq footage written. I also ordered accent tile. They messed up the order and had to make a new order for the floor. Ordered only for the walls not the bathroom floor after I specifically went over the dimesnions. Then for the accent I told them the sq footage and how many inches I wanted the accent. They messed that up too. They refused to get two more sheets unless I paid 150 dollars shipping and then they refused to take back the unused tiles...I am out the money for their sloppy business. read more

Awful experience. You're not allowed to go in the store to look even though there's NO ONE in the store. They won't even let one customer in at a time. So I had to stand at the door in the cold and wind and "tell them what I wanted", which is hard to do when you're looking for ideas and are open to many things. So they brought me a few pieces. Then they have a limit of 3 samples you can take. They take your credit card, and they WILL CHARGE YOU FOR THE SAMPLES IF THEY'RE NOT BACK WITHIN 24 HOURS. I don't know anyone who is in the middle of looking and choosing who needs less than 24 hours. Also, they couldn't tell me how much the samples cost, so if I didn't get them back in time they would be charging me AN UNKNOWN AMOUNT. They said they would call me and tell me the cost of the tiles. They never did call. I got their samples back in time and tried to offer gentle feedback and it was received with argumentation, defensiveness and hostility. There is no way I am ever going back there under any circumstances. I don't know how they stay in business. So 1- they have the most extreme covid policy I have seen in over 15 tileshops I've been to in the east bay, and I am in favor of covid caution, and 2- their sample policy is the worst I've seen anywhere. Cal Tile is the place to go for any DIY home improver who wants to use Kerdi or Ditra products for bathroom remodels. Home Depot, Lowes, and Amazon only sell some of Schluter products, so you need to piecemeal orders which was turning out to be a pain. And none of those stores knows very much, if anything, about how to use this stuff. They seem to specialize more in Hardie and Wonderboard, which I've used in the past. Calvin at Cal Tile had EVERYTHING from Kerdi and Ditra that we needed in stock and had the same or better prices than the bits and pieces the other stores carried. Plus he actually knows how these products work and helped me order just the amounts I needed for our square footage. Since we're not pros, it's helpful to be able to get the help and convenience from someone like Calvin. We'll be getting our tiles and trim here as well. read more

I cannot say enough about how helpful Cal of Cal Tile was. The selection of tile was amazing, including vintage 4 x 4" tiles in colors that would be really hard to find, pretty glass glitter tiles, marble, modern, mediteranean, and the classic early twentieth century patterns we were seeking. We had just left another tile store, frustrated that we could not get help from a sales person. Cal was not only available to help, he laid out different prices and options, explaining the benefits and drawbacks of each tile choice, and prompting us to think about things we did not know we should consider. We left KNOWING we'd gotten a good price on some very good tile (having priced it elsewhere) and came back a few days later to pick it up. Cal double and triple checked the order to make sure we had everything we'd need. The tile is installed, and looks really lovely. I'm happy every time I walk in that bathroom. I took the unopened cases back to Cal Tile and Cal happily refunded my purchase price as he'd promised he would. Cal Tile may not look like the glitziest place when you first walk in, but that's because they put their energy into fantastic customer service. Plus you can easily find everything you'll need there. Just keep walking--the store seems to magically unfold to the back. Plus, Park Street in Alameda? Make an afternoon of it! read more

Absolutely terrible return policy. We ordered tile, not being informed it was a special order. We ultimately decided to return the tile, and we got charged a massive return fee because it was a "special order". Calvin the owner was very rude on the phone and was repeatedly attempting to not even let us return the tile. Also their tile selection is mediocre at best, there are way better tile stores in the east bay that are much cheaper for the same or better quality. read more

This store had one of the wider selections of quality tile products, but where they really shine is the service. Did your tile installer run out of tile in the middle of a project? No problem. They'll get it in by the next day and have you back in business. Does the tile installer do it to you AGAIN? (Mine did). Cal Tile will be there to help you out with accurate service getting the right tile in fast yet again. You can't beat that combination of selection and service. Used these guys last year based on the good reviews on Yelp. They actually mis-measured our kitchen and did not account for the 1-inch backsplash they were replacing...so, they cut the wrong amount of countertop and had to re-do the whole thing a few days later. This seemed like a really rookie oversight on their part. Secondly, when they came to re-do the countertop the second time around, they chipped one of the pieces where the edge met the next counter and tried to blend it. I actually pointed out the imperfection and they came out the next day to "fix it" which really just meant that they were going to try to blend it some more. I am pretty disappointed that they could not make a flush cut here. By the way, when they did the wrong measurement the first time around, they actually did this part right and there were no chips...so I was surprised when they re-did the countertop (as a result of their mistake), they made a chip in their cut. My guess is that they already felt that they lost a lot on our project so they did not bother to inform us of the chip and just went ahead and laid the countertop not thinking we would notice. They also did not inform us that we would have to hire an electrician to adjust the outlets after they pulled the backsplash...they told us this after they took out the backsplash...so until "we" could get a electrician, our project was on hold...this was frustrating because we could have line up an electrician as part of the plan instead of scrambling during the middle of construction. I ended up doing the electrical work myself just so I could get them to keep the backsplash project going. The same thing happened w/ the sink and faucet. They did not tell us we had to hire a plumber to put all of this stuff back in (they took it all out though); again, I ended up doing it all myself...but if you are not as handy, you will want to line up an electrician and a plumber just so you're not without a kitchen any longer than necessary. Lastly, the grout they put in "settled" so there are 1/8 inch cracks; this happened about a month after the project. They left me with extra grout they used though. read more

cal tile is the type of place i really miss about my youth. you see (puts corn cob pipe in mouth, slowly starts rocking in my chair) when i was younger, you still had locally owned grocery stores. i really miss village foods on ocean ave. (puts onion on my belt) these days, when people think of home repair, they think home depot or lowes. for you that dont know, thats like thinking of mcdonalds when you think burgers. recently i spent way too much time remodeling a house. i actually know a bit more than the average person having done this a couple times. it also helps that im in a related field as well. sure you can find the slightly better quality but still on the low side places like sincere and granite expo.... or spend way too much money at highend places like ceramic tile design, (and each should have a place in your repertoire) but there has to be a place with a really good selection items at reasonable prices and have an excellent staff that knows what they are talking about right? cal tile is exactly that. they have an EXCELLENT selection of items. id would say 85 percent of the range any person would ever need is here. i was SHOCKED at their selection after stopping by nearly EVERY TILE OUTLET in the greater san francisco outlet. i dont know why i saved cal tile for last, but this is now my goto place for anything and everything tile. read more

We are remodeling 2 of our bathrooms. We went to several tile stores and left frustrated looking at all the tiles with no help in site. When we do get someone, they were either clueless or was ready to leave us at any chance they get. With Cal Tile, it was a total great experience. Calvin, the owner, is super helpful and knowledgeable about what he carries. He carries a lot of nice Italian Tiles at a reasonable price. Yes you could probably go to other store and find cheaper tiles but they are probably made in China or Mexico. This is a full service shop for tile. When ordering, he will sit down with you and talk about details needed for your installation. It's just not picking the tile folks. There are many details I've overlook. In my opinion, small business should always follow his model. He can't beat big box store on price so service is where he could make a difference. He had quality tiles and the better than Nordstrom service was worth buying from him. read more

Belated review, but five stars. We had the kitchen backsplash tiled, it is a small space with a LOT of outlets and corners, but the tiler did a fantastic job. I do work with mosaics and I wish I had a tenth of the talent this guy had. He was quick but did a great job and we were left extra tiles and grout which we have never had to use.
