I contacted Al because my parents have bought used appliances from him for years and they've had fair experiences. I simply wanted to buy a coin-op washer/dryer set without having to buy brand new ones. It took a couple months to get the washer/dryer (after being told it would arrive ''tomorrow'' at least ten times). Once we finally got the set, we had nothing but problems and a huge headache. It was an embarrassment to have our tenants constantly contact us with complaints about the machines. Just to name a few things that went wrong in no time: - Dryer would start WITHOUT quarters (and worse, it would run for hours with no automatic shut off) - No keys for either machine (so we couldn't get quarters out) - Inside of dryer smelled like gas - Washer had a water leak - Poor communication overall, whenever we brought up an issue My husband spent hours of his own time trying to figure out these issues. And he shouldn't have! It wasn't his responsibility - it was Al's job to deliver functional machines in the first place. We are so let down by the whole experience. Every time we contacted Al, we got a ''Ya, got it, we'll be there tomorrow'' - just to get me off the phone. Weeks would go by with no updates. I get that he's short handed, but my husband and I were at the end of our rope before we just told him to just pick up the machines. Funny how he was able to rush over and pick up the machines within an hour, yet we couldn't get any service help for the crappy machines for months. We found Al to be unresponsive, unreasonable, and unprofessional. It's very disappointing looking back on all of the mornings I started my day calling Reed Supply - trying to get this all finally taken care of - and in the end, I have no washer/dryer and wasted a whole lot of my energy and time. read more

I have bought several items from Reed Supply and I've been so happy with every purchase. I bought a refrigerator and freezer from Reed a the height of the pandemic. Every other store was sold out of anything I could afford. Finally, I went to Reed. As I parked the car, I had the feeling I would be coming out with a new refrigerator. I got such a great deal on the refrigerator, I got myself a small freezer that I LOVE! I got a wonderful refrigerator - my friend told me to spare no expense. They had the refrigerator of my dreams and it was a great price! Then I got the little freezer. I've been cooking big stockpots full of chili, beef bourguignon, jambalaya, and freezing it to eat later. OMG what a lifesaver. Every time I go to Reed's I find exactly what I want. Previous to this I bought a refrigerator in the lower cost range years ago and I think I got my microwave there too. I'm looking to buy two more appliances this week, and I will be checking Reed's out first. read more

I stopped in to check out their under the cabinet exhaust hoods on the advice of my mom whose purchase 20+ years ago was still memorable in a good way. I had a specific look in mind and a flexible budget but I also had some questions as to what I really needed in terms of power. I had already shopped online and hadn't quite been satisfied with the looks and variety available and, further, I was worried about the shipping time as I needed something immediately not in two weeks. Reed Supply staff are incredibly knowledgeable and friendly and were able to answer all of my questions in-depth. They took the time to walk me through the options starting with the $89 basic version and then on up to the thousand dollar versions. I loved that they weren't trying to sell me on more than I wanted to spend. We quickly settled on a mid-range budget and I appreciated the patience and the friendly conversation as I learned about the different features and weighed my options. I ended up going with a top of the line brand that only makes exhaust hoods but got it for less than I was seeing online with an upgrade to baffle filters for an extra 45 bucks so I'll never have to change filters again. I can just wash them or hose them down even. They're practically indestructible. (The baffle filter option was not available online in this price range.) I ordered that morning and picked it up that afternoon. Can't wait to see it installed! Great service! I'll be back! Since I'll be needing some other appliances fairly soon I got a tour with ideas of what else I can find there: cabinets, washer/dryers, plumbing fixtures etc. Note: This is really a place where you want to stop by not call (unless you want to know if they carry a specific line or product). We needed to replace an old microwave/oven combo to be installed into an existing cabinet. Al recommended that I call Tim Burton of Appliance Tek to verify measurements. Al went over Tim's specs, and recommended a Frigidare. We agreed, and bought it. 2 weeks later, it shipped up from LA, Tim picked it up from Reed and did some custom modifications to the cabinet before he installed it. My experience with Reed Supply Company was pretty darn unpleasant. I don't know if I've ever left any store feeling as angry and insulted as I did after my experience there yesterday. My husband and I came to the store looking for a gas stove/oven range to replace our current one. I was surprised at how few actual stoves they had on the floor and how disorganized it was. But hey, they're a small local business. I can look past that. In fact, that's part of why I looked into patronizing them. But then came actual interaction with the human beings there. Boy was that an experience. The first guy couldn't tell us the difference between a slide-in stove and a free standing stove. He just kept talking and interrupting us as we tried to explain what we were looking for and was completely oblivious to the fact that he wasn't answering any of our questions. I quickly learned that it's because he had no idea what he was talking about. But maybe washer/dryers were his thing. My husband and I were annoyed that we basically just wasted 20 minutes with this guy and wanted to talk to someone else; this person was clearly not working out. The lack of knowledge (or, at best, his inability to articulate differences in the products) coupled with verbal vomit and no listening skills was the worst. Until the next guy. The next guy did know what he was talking about but unfortunately also suffered from verbal diarrhea and an inability to listen to our needs. He also had this awful quality of totally talking over me and pretending like I didn't ask a question. It wasn't until we angrily left the store frustrated by the experience that my husband put two and two together. He said to me, "Did you realize that the guy only talked to me and wouldn't even make eye contact with you?" That's when it hit me! They were a bunch of old school chauvinistic guys that felt like they should only deal with the man -- at least when both the man and the woman in a hetero couple are present. I saw them helping a woman who was there by herself, and they seemed to actually talk to her. I'd never had the experience of being totally publicly dismissed as a woman before, so I didn't recognize it. Interestingly enough, if traditional gender roles are what they pander to, you'd think they'd have the sense to cater to me, the woman -- since, you know, I'm probably just home barefoot, pregnant and cooking meals for my husband and likely the one that can convince my husband to buy me the prettiest stove in the world. It couldn't possibly be that it's a joint family decision with both the man and woman contributing financially to the appliance purchase. (In case it's not coming through, I'm laying on the sarcasm pretty thick.) Alas, my review ends with a pretty firm thumbs down on this place. It is, by far, the most infuriating customer service experience I've had in the last decade (tied maybe with Comcast. They're also pretty terrible). read more

I love this place!!!! Found a really small sink for our really small second bathroom. Just walked in, asked if they had small sinks and the gent pointed behind me and VOILA! And the sink only cost $49! $49 is a steal! We came back the next day to look for a smallish electric cooktop for our crazy small 1940's kitchen. They didn't have what we needed in stock but they quickly ordered it and said they'd call us back on Wednesday or so. The price was great for the item, the ordering on a weekend was the bees knees and just being cool cats- priceless! Received a nice call on Wednesday morning, 'Your stovetop is in, ma'am. You can pick it up today.' Yahoo! Stopped in to pick up the stovetop and the guy was super nice and fast with locating my item amongst the other items that arrived from their supplier. I have had three good purchasing experiences so far with Reed Supply. They have a small but mighty selection on display, and can order you pretty much anything you want and have it in a day or two. They have been extremely helpful suggesting the right stuff to meet my needs, and have provided helpful instructions on repair/installation. They also recommended a good contractor to install our stove hood. The prices here are consistent with, or cheaper than what I've been able to find online. And by purchasing from them, I get to keep my money in my community. read more

I bought kitchen cabinets for a remodel. Because it was such a big investment, I visited Reed Supply several times while researching other stores. Each time I was at Reed, Rick (one of the owners) spent as much time with me as I needed to get my questions answered. He let me know about special discounts offered by the manufacturer and he discounted the cabinets too. Rick held my cabinets in their warehouse until my contractor was ready to install them. He also gave me a great deal on a cast iron sink. The delivery guy that came was so rude, he was missing his front bottom teeth ,he was a know it all but didn't know shit and he told my friend to go Fuck herself because she complained about the fact that they were supposed to deliver on that Monday and never showed up then they said they would deliver on Thursday between 9am and -noon and didn't show up till she drove down there to ask why they never showed up again .so they loaded her stuff and drove it over 12 blocks away .and the delivery guy was a complete asshole... Reed Appliance is by far the best place to buy or repair appliances. All of the sales reps are extremely knowledgeable about the merchandise they carry and the merchandise they won't stock. After using Maytag, Whirlpool and Kenmore washers and dryers, I decided I needed Speed Queen washer & dryer. The sales reps both explained the differences between Speed Queen & other brands. One rep said he used Speed Queen at home. Both reps told me the problems with other brands including which brands they are frequently called to repair. They said that Speed Queen rarely need repairs. Most of the other brands are built in other countries but Speed Queen is still built in Wisconsin. Delivery was quick & easy. The only downside to Reeds is that parking is a bit difficult due to its location near Fruitvale BART. Nevertheless, Reeds is worth trying for quality appliances. read more

I guess that was an error. I spent a lot of money for appliances, 3 washers and 3 dryers, with problems 1 month later. These are for an apartment building with great tenants who rely on me. I called and was told to follow the book and attempt the repair myself. Excuse me, what About the warranty??? What about prompt, get off your behind, and provide some customer service. Two appointments made with Al from Reed Supply for repair. 1st appointment waited over 90 minutes and a no show. 2nd appointment, as I write this review, Al is 90 minutes late and no phone call . Yes, I called the business both times but they were closed, no answer, no recording, nothing. If you think customer service and support is important, then this is not the place for you. read more

I cannot give enough stars to the service there. Can I rate it "10"? I Requiring a very difficult-to-find type toilet, I first contacted Moran in Oakland. An indifferent sales person sold me in-tank toilet applies that ended up being useless, then a more involved and pleasant person sold me something else that didn't work; then someone else told me what turned pit to be incorrect information about ordering, saying i probably would never be able to find what I needed, and if I did, it would take weeks until it was in stock. A large plumbing supply in San Jose took an order for a particular Kohler toilet that didn't arrive after TWO months. During this time, the water bill from a my unrepairable strange toilrt went higher and higher. I was frustrated, and desperate, but resigned to paying exorbitant water bills, and dismayed at the waste of water during a drought. Luck and the Toilet Gods were with me a week later, sending me down the lower end of Fruitvale Avenue. i've passed Reed Supplies many times for decades. Thank Heaven they are still in business in this Home-Depot internet sales age. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Reed Supplies Staff!! Everyone I spoke with was knowledgeable and courteous, despite being busy. In particular, the man who helped was Al. He is a prince! What a difference! A salesman who immediately understood what I needed, ordered it, had it there the next day, then loaded it into my car. To find service like this is more and more rare. It wasn't an easy order--it was a difficult item t find, and they got it to me in record time without giving a run around. Thank you, Reed Supplies. I love you. I love my new Toto toilet. I did a major remodel of my house and meticulously researched everything I bought, so I can confirm that Reed's is the cheapest place around while also offering great service and quality products. After much looking around I purchased from Rick and Al an entire kitchen set of beautiful cherry-wood cabinets ($7500), a slick 6-burner chef's stove ($3000), a stainless steel refrigerator ($1000), kitchen and bath faucets, water filter, etc. These guys saved me thousands of dollars compared to other places, including Home Depot. No high pressure selling (at some of the other places, the salesmen pounce on you as you enter the store and hold their breath until you buy something.) I bought a toilet and a sink here a good while back. They carry many lines and know their stuff. I was reminded of them as I drove by and saw boarded up windows. DO NOT BE DISSUADED. They are still in business. I tried to buy a part from them today and the friendly guy said I was still under warranty and gave me a number for the KWC folks. These guys are awesome. I took forever choosing kitchen cabinets and Al patiently worked with me figuring out what I needed. He came to the house, measured, and put up with me making several changes in layout, style, etc. And made some very useful suggestions that I am very glad that I took. No pressure selling, just really good products at amazingly good prices. From the front of the store, you'd never guess that they offer really high quality products. But go inside and ask for help and they'll show you their terrific options in cabinets and appliance. I got by far the best price on semi-custom kitchen cabinets that I could find (Omega Dynasty). The cabs are beautiful and very well made. We also purchased several appliances from Reed and we are very pleased with the quality and the price. These guys are very knowledgeable about their stuff and very old school in their approach to business. They are luddites when it comes to computers (do not bother trying to communicate with them by email and don't expect computer generated plans of your kitchen--they draw it all by hand!!) BUT they give great, high quality products at very, very competitive products, free delivery, and seem genuinely interested in providing good service. Way better than Home Depot and far better prices. And they are a locally owned Oakland business. So supporting them feels good. Couldn't be more pleased. read more

Let me start off by saying I grew up with home remodeling/general contracting with my dad's family business. I know a good deal when I see one. So, from a referral from a friend we decided to go check out Reed Supply for our kitchen cabinets for our full kitchen remodel. We priced out cabinets from other bay are custom and semi-custom places and the quotes were just ridiculous (5k-10K more!). First things first, don't let the cover of a book fool you. Yes it's on Fruitvale in Oakland, but that's why they can keep their prices lower. Second of all, talk to Rick. He's the man. As another yelper mentioned, Rick is "old school" so don't expect an autocad drawing of your cabinet design. What you can expect is a nicely hand drawn design with some good recommendations on ergonomics, placement, functionality, etc. Rick gave us tips that the other so-called pro's from the other places didn't even consider. Pricing wise, we were quite pleased and literally saved thousands of dollars vs our previous quotes. Rick and the fellas are just good, old school guys making an honest living. You're not going to pay extra for a designer or a company based in Danville/San Ramon/Walnut Creek with high overhead costs, and you're going to get way more knowledge and a better product than the big stores like HD and Lowes. I felt very comfortable giving them my business for $30K for new semi-custom kitchen cabinets.
