So of course it was a no brainer that we had to check it out. Not only was it a purse repair store but there was a guy inside getting his wife's Louis Vuitton purse estimated for a leather repair. We spoke with the owner, Chris, who explained the purse repair process. In addition, he also repairs leather shoes and most high end items. I acquired a Louis Vuitton weekender bag that had a significant amount of dry rot on the leather straps, handles and tags. With a quick Google search I found Artbag. Sadly I spent 900+ dollars to have a handbag converted to a dog bag that Iam not able to use. He did a wonderful job on the conversion however he lost the bottom of the bag that gives it stability. When I asked for it back he said he would make another and the one he made does not fit (too small), has sharp uneven edges and the color does not match. read more

This is a review of their policies, not a review of their work as we never went thru with them. My wife's handbag was damaged when a bottle of hand sanitizer accidentally opened inside it. Leaving it stained on the side and bottom. We received an initial quote for approx $400 which we said ok, given this was a fraction of the cost of the bag. The owner Chris was extremely nice and assured me the work would be done to perfection. Before calling back with the credit card info we read the reviews on their work, we as you can see by their 2 stars their work is botchy, at best. Although they have been well written about in many publications, and I'm sure they do some good work at times, it wasn't worth the risk. I called bag 2 days later to ask they send the bag back. Chris was on vacation, so the gentlemen said they would call back with a quote. It cost me $8 to ship the bag UPS ground to them. The bag is small to medium, unlined, minimal hardware...light weight. They quoted, and I unfortunately had to pay $40 to get it back. While they sent it UPS Blue, they never advised nor did I ask for expedited service. Also, it came with the standard insurance not any additional. It's common to mark up shipping costs, but I feel they took advantage here for not doing the work, so in essence a free estimate is not really free if you choose not to proceed. Amazing service and worth the price. I will be bringing all bags here in the future for any repairs I need. I brought in two bags -- a vintage LV Alma from my grandmother with plenty of discoloration and wear & tear, and a Celine phantom with a rip so deep that the Celine store could not repair or replace it even though they sent it back to France. I was very specific with my requests (keep the LV as similar to the original as possible; repair the wing of the Phantom and add more structure to the bag). I waited about 5-6 weeks for the bags to come back, and they are BEAUTIFUL. Each looks better than ever, and the Artbag team fulfilled every single one of my requests to the letter. I wish I took before and after photos. Service was courteous and professional, and I never felt like I was being upsold on changes. read more

BEWARE! I asked Chris at ArtBag to restore this archival rare Dior saddle bag, as it was slightly dirty and needed some love. Although we agreed upon the blue he painted (which I thought would be more of a stain than multiple layers of thick chunky paint that hid the original texture of the ostrich embossed skin), his paint job was thick, sloppy, and the ostrich dots he paint looked like a CHILD did them. I also told him to not paint the piping of the bag, which he did anyway. To add insult to injury, the paint job was incredibly sloppy with finger prints on the bag, the inner flap glued together by paint, paint all over the hardware, several unfinished areas, paint on the lining, and so thick that every other establishment I sought to save this bag said that the paint job was so thick and so poorly done, they couldn't do anything but paint it black (and they were unsure of if the leather itself could handle it after his job). Despite multiple requests for Chris to pay for this bag he caused irreparable damage to, he stands by his work and at one point told me "if I knew what ostrich looked like, I would see that the dots make sense". He refuses to compensate me for the damages he has done. DO NOT BRING ANYTHING OF VALUE HERE. This bag is an irreplaceable archival part of history that has been completely destroyed. No one called me to let me know if my Ferragamo bag was ready after being cleaned. When I showed up & picked up my bag, it looked even dirtier than when I dropped it off almost 2 months ago (& they charged me over $200). Strange brown smudges were on the leather part of the bag that I didn't have cleaned. I do not recommend Artbag & will never use them again. read more

Please beware! This company is high-risk for your high end hand bags. This company has not only damaged my Chanel Jumbo Flap bag (retails for $11,700), but has also kept my bag for nearly one year and a half. They are highly unresponsive (often taking weeks to respond after multiple attempts to get in contact with them -- they are responsive until they get your payment). In a money grab Chris added additional services to alter the exterior flap of my jumbo caviar bag. He got "creative" with the exterior of the bag, adding thick binding that framed the exterior flap of the bag and altered the appearance so that it does not even look like a Chanel Jumbo flap bag anymore (Why would someone buy a bag at that price point and allow you to create a bag that looks nothing like the original?). Then when I communicated to Chris that the alterations he made to the bag were not authorized and unacceptable and after nearly a year of holding the bag, Chris removed the flap leaving huge highly visible holes across the front flap of the bag. I asked him to restore the flap to how it looked when I sent it to him, he refused and assumed that I should just take the bag back as it was with the damage and pay him for a bag that was altered, damaged and would have no value to me or anyone else if I wanted to resell it. Chris was absolutely clueless in his response to me, ignoring the damage and mess he created and believing he was not responsible for correcting the the damage that he caused. I gave Artbag an opportunity to at least restore the appearance, they got lazy and de-prioritized me, they do not respond to my communications, and again they have had my bag for nearly a year and a half. They clearly do not know what to do after they destroyed the bag, so instead, like an ostrich, they put their head in the sand, hoping that the problem will go away and I will just give up on reaching out and trying to get my bag and having this matter addressed. They won't attempt to restore the damage they caused or offer to purchase a new one. Please beware!! If you have high-end hand bags, Chanel, Hermes etc....anything that is over $10K that should continue to retain value, be careful with this company as they showed no care with mine and destroyed my bag. They assume that if you own a high-end bag, they can gouge you and try to add on additional services beyond what you signed up for, not because they care to service you well, but to see how much money they can get because they assume you have it. They destroyed my bag, walk away from the item (like a kid bored with a new toy) and never respond to my correspondences. As of the date that I am writing this note to you, it has been 8 days since my last communication to them asking them (again) to rectify this matter and return my bag, still they have not responded or returned my bag. At this point, I am exploring my options for pursuing this via other routes. I want to warn others, as I feel that it is my duty. I too saw the glowing reviews and I wanted to also support a multi-generational family run business. This has been a highly disappointing experience, and the worst service I have ever had. I really wanted to support this family business. :( I'm based in New York, so in particular I want to share my story with those considering shipping their bags out of state for repair here. This was several years ago, but I am still angry about it so writing a review. I sent in a canvas Louis Vuitton bag that needed new straps. I was quoted something like $200 or $300 for the repair. Without consulting me, Artbag replaced every piece of leather on the bag, and also the zipper (that had nothing wrong with it), and charged me $800. The new zipper was poor quality and the teeth immediately bent, making it impossible to close the bag. Additionally, the new straps are noticeably wider than the original, and the stitching was messy. All in all, I spent $800 on a bag that only cost me $1200 to begin with, and it came back in worse condition. Don't make my mistake - avoid. read more

My 1992 Chanel purse had become misshapen, and I couldn't find anyone in Los Angeles who could do much for it, so I mailed it off to Artbag in NY. They have a unique method for fixing this problem by sewing hard cotton pieces (similar to hardcover book binding) into the bag between the lining and the leather. This cost $250 for my bag, plus shipping. Overall, I think the shape looks a lot better and I feel happy to use my purse again. It does feel unusually stiff now (imagine having a purse as stiff as a hardcover book), but I'm sure I'll get used to it. All in all, good job! read more

I have a Louis Vuitton Alma bag, that had some serious staining on the vachetta on the bottom of the bag, and it had this odd odor, the inside smelled like it had just come out of a crayon factory. So the smell wasn't terribly offensive but annoying. They re-did the vachetta to make it a consistent color per my request. I knocked off one star because of price, it was a bit pricey $275 in total. They did try and remove the odor, it came back smelling not as crayon like but not perfect and they stated that they couldn't guarantee compete odor removal. They did a great job even down to the bag marking detail on the lower part of the back where it says Louis Vuitton and where it was made. I mailed my bag to them as I'm not in NYC and didn't have any plans on being up there to drop it off. They do have a great attention to detail and certainly saved this bag from ruin. If I have another bag in distress and extra money to have it rehabbed I would use them again. read more

I would not suggest using Artbag from afar. Artbags has a form on their website where you can get quotes for repairs. I had 2 bags that I wanted repaired. One bag: I said it needed to be "entirely refurbished" and they quoted me: $300. When I sent the bag in they quoted me $1600 for a complete "restoration". I argued that refurbished was the same thing as restoration, but he didn't respond. The other bag I sent in was quoted $175 for a new strap, but when I sent the bag in they said they would do a new strap for $300, or a thinner strap for $175. The bag is pretty large so it can't have a thinner strap. I paid shipping both ways, and asked them to rebate my shipping costs since the quotes they gave me were a bait and switch, but they never responded. read more

I'm still a fan of Artbag and would not hesitate to use them again. But I realized that I never updated this posting. Sadly, even after the cleaning and polishing, the Chanel Bag did continue to transfer dye to light colored clothing. To a much lesser extent than it did before I brought it to Artbag, but nevertheless, this is no longer a bag I use with white T-Shirt. My best advise is that when purchasing vintage bags, buyer beware. If a deal is true good to be true, that is probably the case. I got the Chanel bag for $1850, which is a good $1,000 LESS than what you typically can find this vintage bag for. read more

I'm not sure what all the negative reviews are for. The owner of the shop and his wife are absolutely lovely. Very friendly,helpful, and often funny-cracking jokes with me each time I've gone in. Yes the prices are high, but you are paying for excellent quality and service. I purchased a delightful small purse during their summer sale and I'm really so pleased with it. While I've never gone in for a repair, I can attest to the quality of the bags that they create. Just as a note to the owner though in case he reads this-the person who answers your phone is a little rude! Almost turned me off from coming into the store, but I'm glad I did anyway. :) read more

Paid over $300 for a strap repair to my LV Alto tote bag. It broke again after less than ten wears. Save your money and do not go here.

I think it's great that there is a trustworthy spot to fix ones handbags. Very pricey though. A simple cleaning for a standard 2.55 was $160 +$10 shipping fee (I could have picked it up free). I didn't have any stains- just general use so I expected it would come out good as new but I might as well just left the bag with a shoe repair place for $40. I also left a medium sized tote bag that needed repiping, changing the leather in the handles, fixing inside pocket, and general cleaning which came out to over $625... they get people to pay since you don't want to not be able to use a bag you've grown attached to. They were honest though and quoted the prices upfront and delivered on time- although i wasn't pleased about the 3 week waiting period. I would suggest trying another place first but when all else fails it's an option. read more

Not sure where to even begin. The incredibly high prices? Or the terribly rude customer service? Dropped off an Hermès bag to be fixed and was shocked that the repair would cost more than $150 for a simple hardware(strap clip) to be replaced. I settled up with the clerk, who seemed to want absolutely NOTHING to do with me, despite my efforts to be kind and gracious. He rushed through the transaction without explaining the charges. Fast forward 10ish days and I was supposed to get a call that it was completed. Since I did not get the call, I called them only to be placed on hold for over 20 minutes. They clearly forgot I was on the phone... I went to pick up the bag and again had a terrible customer service experience with the young man at the counter. He actually yelled when I asked to see the strap and asked if it was gold or silver hardware. I could not believe his response and left the store almost in tears. I will absolutely never return nor will I send my friends to this awful place. You can get your bag fixed by the lovely cobbler on 88th between Park and Lex for a fraction of the price and receive world class customer service! read more

Amazing craftsmanship and great customer service! Artbag did an outstanding job on my Louis Vuitton bag. They cleaned the bag, reattached a broken handle, secured the other handle and replaced a section of leather. They did such a great job that even I couldn't tell what was repaired. I had used this place before, and had a great outcome (it involved custom-making a metal bit for a vintage Hermes bag). They did a great job at the time. This was something that the Hermes boutique could not do easily, so they sent me over to ArtBag. I was perfectly happy with the service at the time. At around the same time, I dropped off an Hermes belt to be repaired and completely forgot about it. I moved to the West Coast from NYC shortly thereafter, and it entirely slipped my mind in the ensuing chaos. I think this was slightly less than 2 years ago -- I know this is crazy, but it was a vintage piece I had never worn before, so it was not part of my 'active' wardrobe. I had some items stored away as part of the cross-country move, so I just assumed the belt was stored elsewhere and never looked for it. I just got a reminder call about it, and the gentleman to whom I spoke was as rude as could be. I immediately paid the balance over the phone (and I would have been happy to pay interest if they asked for it), but the rudeness was hard to stomach. I mentioned to him that it was coming across that way, and received no apologies. He also did not allow me any room to explain the situation or apologize, as he was incredibly brusque. He questioned me when I would be able to come in to pick it up like I was being interrogated for a crime. That left no room for me to ask if they would be able to mail it to my home address. I happen to be in NYC on a 3 day business trip, and now I have to take time out of my day to pick it up instead of politely asking them to mail it home for a fee. I don't have any desire to call them back as they were so incredibly rude. The guy threatened that they would 'sell' the belt if I don't pick it up -- that is a fair deal, since I did forget about the item entirely, and I would imagine they can recover more than the fee owed from the sale. I would not blame them if they did just that. I recognize it is my fault entirely, but I see no reason for the rudeness. As the place was initially recommended to me by the Hermes boutique on Madison Ave., and I will make sure to mention this behavior to their sales associates. There are plenty of other places that do great work that are not rude to their customers. read more
