I have gone to this dentist for several years and had mostly fine experiences. I don't particularly care for the male dentist on staff as he is pretty condescending. However, if they late cancel your appointment they aren't accommodating for a re-schedule. Unless you can re-arrange your life expect to be several months out--as in at the time of your next cleaning. As a professional myself if I have to late cancel someone due to unforeseen circumstances I make sure to go above and beyond to accommodate a re-schedule that is convenient for the person because I value the time they set aside. I guess I should always remember that not everyone has that same level of professionalism. read more

My husband and I have been patients since Dr Andersen opened the practice on East Washington. Wonderful dental practice with a great staff. Dr Andersen and crew have always been friendly and professional. They provide wonderful care. At 68 years old, I've been to a number of dentists over the years. Dr Andersen and staff are the best! I'd like to add that yesterday an old crown that had been placed by a prior dentist fractured and chipped off. I called Artisan Dental last evening to see if I could get in today. I got a return call at 7:15 this morning, was in their chair at 9 AM, and was done with a new crown at 11:15 AM. Thank you so much Rochelle, Dr Rehermann, and Cassie for such speedy, kind, and professional service. I have no idea how people could have had negative experiences. After going at least twice a year for 8 years, I've always been treated exceptionally well. It's true the office is like a very hip spa, and the equipment is state of the art, but the most important part is the people that work there. They're incredible. read more

I agree with the other review that said this dentist is like a spa. You enter this beautiful room with mid-century modern furniture and the sound of soothing music played in the background. There are also iPads for you to use in the lounge. Let me first say that I hate the dentist. I've always hated going to the dentist, but this dentist wasn't so bad. I had two deep cleanings done (root & scaling) since I was awful about going to the dentist and now I'm trying to be an adult and be responsible or something like that. Anyway, the cleanings weren't bad! I survived! Rebecca played Parks and Rec for me while I was sitting in the chair, so that was pretty awesome. In terms of having a pleasant time at the dentist, Artisan is up there with the best. The office itself is conveniently located downtown and has free parking in a nearby ramp. It's in a newer building with many large windows, so lots of natural light and downtown views. They have soothing ambiance music playing throughout and the aesthetic is not sterile like many dentist offices. The staff is professional and very friendly. The one thing I personally find helpful is receiving an estimate/what is covered by insurance before any work is done. It saves the frustration of receiving a large bill in the mail and having to work things out over the phone. I'd recommend anyone looking for a new dentist to put Artisan at the top of their list. read more

Fast efficient service in a calming and welcoming atmosphere. I didn't know going to the dentist could be like this. Large windows with natural light welcome you in both the waiting room and in the treatment rooms. Everyone who works here is friendly and professional. I had my metal fillings replaced here and they did a great job. I also had two cavities filled and I was in and out in an hour! I have the same dental hygienist each time I visit for a cleaning and she is wonderful. And they accept Delta Dental! Extras.... Fresh lemon water while you wait... They have a recycling program for old electric toothbrushes. They have a referral program and give you gift cards to great local businesses when you send your friends, coworkers and family in. They have the most wonderful free lip balm made with soothing natural oils. Never going anywhere else as long as I live in Madison. read more

It's located in my neighborhood, so for me this place is very convenient. There's street parking and also free 2-hour parking in the garage. I've not been to a spa but this place reminds me of one with its fruit water, comforting color scheme throughout the waiting area, and tv screens that display tropical settings. I guess it helps to reduce your anxiety if your anxious about going to the dentist. The staff is nice and always checking on your comfort level. Despite being in the chair for over half an hour it doesn't really feel too long. They are more than happy to discuss your insurance plan to ensure that you're getting the most out of your dental plan and benefits. read more

I love Artisan Dental and have been going there for four years now. The folks in reception always make me feel welcomed, the hygienists are skilled and personable, and I trust and appreciate the professionalism and skills of the dentists. I'm particularly fond of the TVs they have that display beautiful nature scenes (rather than assaulting the senses as some businesses seem to think is desirable). The one nit I have about this last visit: the bathroom. The location of the bathroom has changed a couple times over the years, and now there is one and only one--for everyone. I happened to line up for it when the occupant before me was taking so long, I feared he might be staking a homesteader's claim. Once I finally gained access, it was in disarray and not the clean, Zen quality I was used to from Artisan. On the spectrum of burning world issues, not a biggie--but nevertheless, not a pleasant start to an appointment. read more

I am terrified of the dentist - or at least I was before finding Artisan. I have severe dental anxiety that was compounded by not having insurance for some time and being ashamed that it had been awhile since I had seen a dentist. I finally talked myself into seeing Dr. Andersen based on other reviewers' experiences. The first key to making my experience comfortable was being able to schedule online and write out exactly what fears and issues I have. When I came in for my first visit everyone was on board with my terror including reception - the lovely woman who did my intake didn't even bat an eye when I was near tears just walking up to the counter to check in. I've had to come in for a couple of visits and have met several members of the staff and none of them are judgmental. Everyone was entirely accommodating and made sure that I was doing okay. I am pretty sensitive to pain and it takes more than one shot of numbing - unlike past experiences I wasn't questioned or treated like I was being dramatic. They also weren't bothered by me literally shaking in the chair as they were working. I get very tense and anxious and tremble through every appointment but for them it's no big deal. I don't like admitting publicly that I am a nervous wreck when it comes to the dentist, but I want other people who are too nervous to go to know that they will be comfortable here (as comfortable as you can be at a dentist, anyway). A lot of the things that made visits unbearable for me in the past aren't a problem here. read more

My experience with Artisan has been WONDERFUL. As a semi-responsible, soon-to-be 26 year old, I realized last minute that I was about to lose my dental insurance. I contacted Rochelle at the front desk to see if they could squeeze me in with just a few days notice before my insurance was about to expire (a wishful act in the medical/dental world). Not only did they fit me in for a cleaning with Kayla and Dr. Andersen yesterday, they were able to fit me in today for fillings (my very last day with dental insurance). I have never seen a more caring, understanding, and flexible team in all my medical/dental experiences (and I have had a LOT). Not only did they provide me excellent dental care, they also saved me a ton of money by adjusting their schedule so I could still receive dental services while insured. All in all, it's very rare to find such a passionate team and I am so so so incredibly grateful for their understanding and flexibility. Also, their office is very modern, very clean, and has an overall positive feeling when you first walk in. 10/10 would recommend! read more

I had a great experience, from the time I called in December to schedule an appointment, through my initial visit in January. The first thing they did was call my insurance provider before scheduling my appointment to be sure my visit would be covered. Secondly, all their required forms are available online, so you aren't stuck completing a pile of paperwork during your first visit. I love that everything is electronic, and it's in keeping with their philosophy of utilizing reclaimed or recycled materials wherever possible. Kayla T was my hygienist. She was professional and careful. She explained everything she was doing before she did it. She also did things like only gently using the air hose on my teeth and gums, not the painful blast I've experienced at other clinics. Full disclosure: I've never had a cavity and am an easy dental patient. However, based on my experience with Kayla, I would definitely recommend Artisan Dental for someone who experiences anxiety when visiting the dentist. Dr. Andersen was pleasant, but since I didn't have any issues, we didn't speak for long. The office space is beautiful and comfortable. The lobby even has an iPad bar so you can surf the Internet while you wait. This should not be an indication that there will be a wait, though, as I was promptly taken to a chair to begin my service. Fun fact: If you save old toothbrushes and toothpaste tubes, you can bring them into the office for recycling. Madison does not recycle these items, but Artisan has a vendor they use for that. read more

They recommended I get 3 drilling's I did not need a year ago. Just got my new X-rays a year later somewhere else and still no cavities. I'm confident these people lie about cavities to make more money. There are other reviews describing similar experiences. Fantastic dentist. I am usually wary of places that have all five star reviews. I mean common, everyone one can't like them that much. 10 five star reviews, how is that possible ? But from my experience, the five stars were earned. I was visiting my dad over the weekend and a crown fell out. No big deal, any dentist can do that in 10 minutes. This one just happened to have an opening. Artisanal dentist? Great prob. run by hipsters. However my experience there was exemplary. They too care of arranging with my insurance. I was seen right away and they did a fantastic job. Literally better than new. I just came in to have a crown glued back in. They wanted to take an xray to check for any possible deterioration and actually went to the trouble of making sure it was covered in my insurance (otherwise I would have passed). When gluing the crown back in the doctor was meticulous in the fit and comfort. I used to have a little space between the crown and gum where food would sometimes get lodged. They took care of that also. Better than new. This place would be my new dentist, but I live in Chicago. Thanks! read more

I had a great experience at this place--as far as going to the dentist goes. The check-in process went smoothly. Kayla kindly introduced herself at the front desk and took the time to point out what's available in the waiting room: TV, free wifi, iPads/tablets, magazines, and water. There really wasn't a wait time for me because my hygienist, Megan S., was already at the door to let me in. Megan was great; very personable yet professional. She led me to my room, which had a great view of the street and the snow falling with the floor to ceiling window. Very different from the usual plain walls at a dentist's office. She did her thing; very thorough (at times I wanted her to be done already!), but I appreciated the time she took to do my cleaning. She explained everything she was doing before doing it and told me what instruments she would be using next. None of the instruments were new to me, but it's nice to get a heads up that she'll be drilling in your mouth. I met Dr. Anderson after an hour of cleaning. She was very well spoken and talked to me about her concerns, but ultimately, let me be the decision-maker on how to proceed. I feel like she really listened to me, my thoughts, and concerns and didn't push anything that I didn't think needed to be done. I really appreciated that. The appointment ended with Rochelle, the patient coordinator, to talk to me about any treatment plans, insurance coverages, etc. She gave me detailed information on what I needed to know. It was a nice way to end the whole visit. This place makes me not mind coming to the dentist. read more

TLDR: If you're going to go to Artisan Dental, only go for cleanings. They do a poor job of cavity fillings, and will not take any responsibility for incompetent work and pain they have caused for a patient. I am editing my original 5-star review to include what has happened over the last year. I first went to Artisan Dental when I moved to Madison. When I wrote my original review, I only had 1 cleaning at that point, and I have to give the hygienist credit- they do a wonderful job of cleaning your teeth. Nonetheless, at my first appointment, the dentist requested that I get x-rays done, and they proceeded to tell me that I needed 4 cavities filled. I hadn't had cavities in nearly 8 years, and nothing was brought up to me at my last cleaning (6 months prior, x-rays taken) with the dentist I had prior to coming to Madison. I was a bit surprised that all of a sudden, I had 4 cavities, but took their word for it and scheduled two different appointments to have my cavities filled. On the first visit, they filled 3 cavities. My mother was visiting me that day, and when I walked in the door after my visit, my mom thought that I had a stroke. My whole side of my face was drooping, I couldn't move anything. The side effects lasted all day. I went in the following week to have the other cavity filled and complained at the time about the long-lasting side effects and the pain I was still feeling after the first filling. They ignored my complaints, said I was probably just sensitive after the fact, and went on with the second filling. I put up with the pain for approximately a week after the second filling but couldn't sleep at night or eat anything but room temperature soup because the pain was so bad. I had radiating pain around my whole jaw and all of my teeth. I went back in and they looked at everything and suggested that my sinuses were acting up and told me to go see my ENT. A month later, I went in to see my ENT, and he looked at the updated x-rays, and in my nose and mouth. He said nothing was wrong with my sinuses. I went back to Artisan Dental and they still refused to take any responsibility for the amount of pain I was in. I went in for another cleaning 6 months after my first appointment, still in pain, and they told me that I needed to come in every 4 months for a cleaning from now on (with no real reason why). My insurance won't cover that, so I would've had to pay out of pocket, and declined. They took x-rays again of my mouth to see if something was wrong with the fillings, and they said everything was fine, and I'd just have to deal with the discomfort. Over a year later, my teeth and jaw are still in pain. After all of this, I decided to switch back to my old dentist, who is two and a half hours away from where I currently live. I had an appointment last week with my old dentist, who I explained all of this to, and had her look at all of my x-rays taken with Artisan Dental. It turns out, that due to poor placement of an anesthetic injection during the first cavity filling, I had peripheral facial nerve palsy. Based on my current pain levels, my dentist said this will likely be a long-lasting problem that I'll have to live with. Looking at the original x-rays, my dentist said 3 of the 4 cavities should not have been filled (yet, at least). Furthermore, upon examination, she noticed that two of my molars (one of which had been filled) were glued together with the filling. I couldn't even floss between the two teeth. Finally, she said that the only patients that need to come in for 4-month cleanings are periodontal patients, which I definitely am not. Needless to say, I am disgusted with the lack of care for patients and their inability to take responsibility for what had happened (or at least educate me on what happened). Update: The owner, Dr. Nichole Anderson, did reach out to me and apologized for the situation. She said she will use this experience to better educate her team. read more

The doctor and dental hygienist were very nice. The staff was pretentious and unhelpful. Clearly this office thinks very highly of their "artisan" image and very little for actually servicing the needs, circumstances and well being of their clients. The visit started off with the receptionist giving me attitude about having to look up my insurance group number. Then after the check up they refused to do a regular cleaning when my insurance would not cover the deep cleaning procedure I needed due to a required waiting period. They expected me to pay out of pocket for the deep cleaning and refused to give me the cleaning I am covered for in the interim. Basically they would rather leave me without any sort of preventative procedure for almost a year than miss out on nearly $1k from my pocket. When I asked for my records to take them to another dentist who would actually work with me, I received short, snide responses to my requests. All pretense at politeness was gone when the dollar signs walked out the door. read more

When I needed cavities filled, Artisan dental sat me down in one of their offices with an associate who looked up my insurance and even showed me what billing codes they use. So this is my first review and the reason being is I am a person that usually doesn't go out of his way to voice my opinion. With that being said that should tell you how upset I am with my experience. I first showed up to Artisan Dental in November of 2015 when I moved here from Florida. I scheduled a cleaning. While there they told me I have a cavity on my second back molar. So I schedule a appointment to have the filling for the cavity done in mid December with Dr. Andersen as I thought she seemed like a nice dentist and her reviews were good. A week after the cavity was done, I still wasn't able to chew on the side that the filling was done on, and if anything that was mildly cold would make tear up. I then decided probably something was wrong and I needed to go back in. At the beginning of January I had a follow up appointment. Dr Andersen took new X-rays to see what the possible problems could be. You could see in the X-rays that she had possibly aggravated the nerve root while performing the filling (I work in the medical field and review films on a regular basis, by no means am I a doctor but it was evident she hit the nerve). Instead of taking drastic measures she wanted to desensitize the tooth and see if that helped the symptoms. I agreed that was fine. The symptoms never got better instead worsen. I was beginning not to be able to eat any room temperature food and water from the kitchen sink would lead to extreme pain. Finally late January I came back in unable to sleep and function regularly. Dr Andersen said that the only remedy would be a root canal. She gave me some pain medication to help with the pain until my root canal the following week. After that appointment is when everything went from bad to hell. The following night, I wasn't able to function without a ice cube in my mouth. If the ice cube dissolved I would start to tear up and the pain was excruciating. I called Dr Andersen emergency line around 5 pm and left a voicemail describing the situation and need of help. Never received a phone call for the entire night. I broke into chills followed by a 104 fever. The fever broke the following morning. Artisan Dental did call the root call specialist that morning and I was able to get into the office that afternoon for a emergency root canal. Capital Endo who performed the root canal said that last night I was experiencing the nerve root dying and infection setting in. No Lie this was one of the worse nights of my life. Last week I canceled my basic cleaning with Artisan Dental and told them the story I have written above. They said they were sorry of my decision not to come in. The reason I am writing all of this is still to this day I never received a apology from Dr Andersen. I am truly in aw of the unprofessionalism that was given to my situation. This small cavity has now gone from a filling, to a root canal, to another filling, and in the future a crown. All said and done it will cost is a small fortune. I just couldn't believe the lack of remorse thus leading to this review. I can only hope this does't happen to someone else. read more

This was the most spa-like dentist experience I've ever had. Everybody was sooooo nice and the space looked more like a hotel lobby than a dental hygenist's torture den. Sure, I got goosebumps from the sound of metal scraping against my tooth enamel, but that's my own fault for drinking coffee. They didn't give me any stickers or plastic rings, which would have been a star off if it weren't so affordable--and price matters to an uninsured gal like me! read more

I have been to dentists in three different cities (college, moving around, etc). This is by far my favorite. For one, the energy and ambiance (not usually something discussed when talking about going to the dentist!) is amazing. The waiting area is relaxing with ipads to use, bright colors, interesting books. The exam rooms have huge windows that face the street with tons of natural light. Everyone (from the front desk staff to the hygienist to the dentist herself) introduced themselves, were super friendly, and wanted to get to know me. They were great at listening to any dental concerns I had and worked with my insurance company for me. The dental exam and cleaning were comfortable and great. Also, they have a cool recycling program for toothbrushes and other items as well as wellness events every couple months! Can't recommend them highly enough! read more

First, this review has nothing to do with with the environment or quality of work performed since I never made it into their office. New to Madison and with just a recent cleaning (less than 1 month ago) and full set of X-rays I thought I would try to get in for urgent dental work. They were able to schedule me within 2 days of calling (forget trying their "Contact Us" on their website... did that and no response for a week). However, after sending X-rays they indicated they might have to take new ones. In addition, I would have to come in first for an "evaluation" ($97 fee) and then follow up with a second visit for dental work. I even indicated what my last dentist recommend and still could not get in for a single appointment. I feel this dentistry is like most - just another dentist mostly interested in padding the bill and if they can help people out while making a profit than so be it. If they were seriously interested in people's health they wouldn't do amalgam fillings period. read more
