After reading reviews and looking at pictures I felt confident trying this salon, but that confidence quickly disappeared when my stylist gave me an undercut that wasn't straight and didn't create a straight part before cutting my hair. I asked them to make the part straight before fine-tuning the haircut and asked them to make the undercut straight and they did once I asked...or so I thought. When I got home, my partner pointed out that the undercut wasn't straight at the top or bottom and that my neck hadn't been cleaned up. As the blow-our style fell, I began to notice more problems with the haircut. The haircut was supposed to be asymmetrical with the hair longer in the front than the back; I brought in several photos and we discussed the cut before it started. It doesn't have that shape when styled curly or straight -- there are sections that are longer that fall outside of the shape it should be. One side is also an inch or so longer than the others. The undercut on the sides of my head are also uneven, with one side starting higher than the other. I'd also asked for layers, and the back of my hair had some layers put in but they abruptly vanish and don't continue around my head. I regret coming here for a haircut since my options to fix it will leave me with shorter hair than I wanted and either a higher shave than desired or months of incredibly awkward grow-out on one side. read more

Awful communication around scheduling. Told them I was brand new to the area when I called, no one warned me of an event in Frederick that would close the streets this weekend. Got to area early but was met with road closures and no parking. Called ten minutes before appointment to tell them I'd be late - was told no worries. Finally find parking and walk a mile and a half. Get there and was told sorry we can't see you because you're late. Appalled - then why couldn't anyone tell me that before I fast walked (with a heart condition that makes it difficult) over a mile in crowds & paid for parking. No apologies, was offered no solution, and zero empathy. I don't know how good their stylists are but their office and customer management is bleak, rude, and unprofessional. I'll take my money somewhere else since they clearly don't give any cares about their client's time or well-being. read more

Although the decor is somewhat nice in the salon with the plants it doesn't make up for the lack of working stations/ broken chairs etc. The salon seems halfway decorated and halfway in construction at times. The atmosphere feels a bit strange... I've seen the owner he doesn't seem to be the friendliest as he has never greeted me. I can tell that his employees don't care for him, now finding out he doesn't treat them well at all either. I don't feel someone should be physically afraid of their boss when they go into work. Something seems a bit off there... I have noticed many of his stylists leave and go to Belleza Salon & Day Spa... (seems like my gut instinct with the owner was correct).. I've been "blond-ish" for many years that went through a handful of different stylist. The style would look great for a couple of months then it'll look like a hotmess because my hair grows fast. For the record, I have jet black, thick and wavy hair. I was referred to Nikki at Artisinal Hair. At first, I was a bit hesitant because the place is far from Silver Spring and let's face it, downtown Frederick does not have good parking. I'm glad I did not listen to my gut... the drive is worth it and there is a parking lot across the street, which most of the time the paystation does not work (free parking yay!). This is my 3-4th balayage and had one keratin treatment (I cannot remember exactly what it was called) done. This place makes you feel at home and Nikki is such a sweet yet talented person! This Salon is amazing. Let's start with the decor. Fun, modern and artistic. Makes you really feel like you are in a place where they care about styling which is important. They have a really cool area to wash and blow dry towards the back of the salon, which is great because you get a little privacy which is uncommon in salons. I personally get my hair done by Michelle who is the salon manager. She is amazing. She can style my wild sometimes unmanageable always way to dry mixed girl hair! Michelle is amazing at curly cuts, and her blow drys will have you prepped for the Gods honey. Every where I go after going to Michelle I get non stop compliments. Yesterday my co worker just sat next to me starting at my hair. She said "how does it go from so curly to so straight" as she just sat and started in amazement. Michelle has also done my highlights. Originally she color corrected someone else's work, and once again she did a phenomenal job. There's nothing she can't do. Christian the owner of the salon is also fantastic. He is down to earth, humble and knowledgeable. I always enjoy my visits to this salon (and did I mention they have a dog?). Amber is a color GENIUS. I saw her in November for a pretty lightweight highlight touch up and she did a great job. Fast forward 3 months- and I tried another stylist (I'm new to the area so still getting my bearings) and was really unhappy with how my hair turned out. Full disclosure, I'm a pretty particular fake blonde with naturally very dark hair. I don't like it to be too ashy but I HATE anything warm. I've been getting highlights for about 7 years so I do consider myself a realist, but stylist number 2 left me with golden/orange roots. In less than 2 hours, Amber drastically improved the tone and the blend. She was realistic about what she thought we could improve in one appointment, but she far exceeded my expectations. All I can say is what happened, no shade just facts. I saw my neighbors hair color and decided to inquire and possibly drop by. Now, they did try to make me feel comfortable @first when I was finally invited in for service and all(BUT this was by the owner about 2 weeks later) because while over the telephone and because I HAD to tell them that I am an aa woman(which in 2023-2024 I should've never had to disclose this detail to a business that's been growing and moving on with the times, but obviously they aren't)! The salon service providers were pretty much ALL caucasian and a couple of asians with just one aa(I think because) she did not want to meet me nor speak with me about what I needed, nor would she lend me her services. No no folks, she suggested that I go to the African hair braiding company with THE AFRICANS. When I'm saying to the receptionist "I don't want braids"! Based on another review I decided to try Lori with artistnal and I am completely blown away with the results. in one session She gave me an amazing haircut and lightened my hair to the blondest It's been in years. Oh my gosh, AMAZING! I first went to Artisinal Hair Company because I needed a hair cut/trim and I'm new in Frederick. I checked Yelp for reviews and found Nikki, my new favorite person! My hair had horrible ends and I also wasn't 100% sure of what I wanted, but I had an idea. Thankfully Nikki gave me the cut I needed and totally gave me the best layers! She was so helpful (I'm not hair savvy at all!) and didn't make me feel bad for not knowing what I wanted! I decided to take it a step further and get balayage color (? Is that how it's said?), I just learned how to say balayage when I got my hair cut! So fast forward to today and I LOVE MY HAIR SO MUCH!!! I am naturally a dirty blonde but about a year and a half ago I dyed my hair dark brown with box dye. I asked my previous regular stylist if she could dye it blonde again, as I missed my natural color. She said she wouldn't be able to do so because of the chemicals in box dye, but gave me highlights so it would grow out naturally. This summer I thought maybe my hair had grown out enough/faded (i used semi-permanent dye), to try again. I went to Genet at Artisinal and she had absolutely no problem doing my hair! She discussed with me at length exactly what I wanted and listened to everything I said. While she initially suggested a balyage, I was pretty confident I wanted all-over blonde. We decided also to do a shadow root because I am a student and cannot afford to get my hair done often/don't live in Frederick for the majority of the year. I have fairly dry hair so I was very nervous about bleaching, but the products they use are so moisturizing and Genet gave me tips on how to take better care of my hair. Genet also trimmed my hair/cut my bangs, and gave me tips on how to maintain their length at home! (I typically trim my bangs at home and only get them professionally cut about once a year). I was so pleased with my hair in the end!! It came out so natural even though we went lighter than my natural shade, and I've received so many compliments on it. For dying/toning/trim/styling my total came to $250, which was completely worth it. I'm definitely going to be a loyal customer from now on! read more

IT WAS ALSO PERMED aka no hairstylist would want to make you go light which in my case was what I wanted to do! I wanted to go from Jet black to GREY/BLONDE and I knewwww Nikki could do this. I've been following her work for awhile now and I've been coming back every month or so for touch-ups, trims, etc. She will not damage your hair and over process you a million times like some of these other salons do just so you can be satisfied with the color. she cares about the health of your hair which is so important to me because my hair was a bit damaged and i know bleaching it would damage it a little more. but here I am today 6 months in and my hair is soft as buttaaaaa and blonde!
