Just had a bizarre experience here after being a customer here for years. I started at the Tacoma location looking for stretcher bars by the master series in 24, 36, 30, and 40s. Tacoma was out but the sweet sales associates offered to order or call Seattle. I overheard them on the phone confirming various sizes. So I thanked them & drove up to Seattle. I noticed the Seattle location didn't have the sizes I was told, I asked the guy in charge of frames/ stretchers and he claimed I asked for one size then showed me a different brand from what was confirmed over the phone, a heavy duty variety. When I expressed frustration of being told the wrong thing, he walked off pouting, didn't offer to order any for me like Tacoma did. Not wanting to leave empty handed I grabbed a couple off sizes so I can work. On my way to check out, I informed my friend of what just occured and placed the stretchers at the register. The clerk said "You need to check out over there, Sir." My flabbers were gasted! My monocle popped out! I said "Sir? I'm not a sir!". This was strange and shocking to me. So I went to the proper clerk saying "They just called me Sir. What part of me gives man? I've never been called a man." So yeah I'm mad confused as to why my petite, adorable self in pink & lilac got called a man by someone who would not appreciate being misgendered themselves.... On Pride weekend of all times. And why wasn't I offered to have the supplies ordered for me like in Tacoma? Basically I received a wild goose chase, a bad attitude, lied to about what I overheard confirmed on the phone, and casually misgendered by Seattle staff. Very sad since I prefer supporting local. The Tacoma shop is a vibe with kind, helpful staff. I'll stick with them and Jerry's Art a Rama online. Apparently several reviews report bad behavior from staff over the past year or so. Don't need the funky ahh attitude when I just wanna create. read more

This is truly the best art supplies store in Seattle and possibly in Washington state. They have an incredible selection of supplies from drawing to painting to printmaking to sculpting and all kinds of arts and crafts. I have been to four other art supply stores in Western Washington and no one can hold a candle to Artist & Craftsman Supply's selection and prices. They even have free parking! Just make sure you follow the directions at the front door to get your free 2-hour parking. Recently, I went here several times to buy watercolor paints, brushes, and paper to get ready for some watercolor classes I was taking this spring and summer. Always very disappointing when I have to do an update on a previously celebrated business. This has been my go-to place since moving to Seattle in 2012. And I supported it wholeheartedly despite sometimes finding items slightly cheaper elsewhere. Additionally, as an art educator I always suggested it to my students for their value, as well as excellent and knowledgeable customer service. Unfortunately, I'm very disappointed to say both superb customer service and cost value are gone. Firstly, I learned from my students that student discount was no longer available. Then after my last visit, I was stunned how much the prices have increased. Still, I remained a dedicated patron. After coming home I realized one of the expensive wooden panels had a substantial gouge in the corner - simply too noticeable to try fixing. I confidently returned to the store but was told they would not take back the damaged items - because they couldn't verify it was damaged before my purchase. The associate was unbearably rude and dismissive. One my way out I expressed my profound disappointment with the current direction of this trusted business with another associate, only to have the associate I originally spoke with catch up with us. Now they changed their song, saying they could accept the damage item but I was very lucky because it's not something they always do. What?! The associate appeared to be making up policies as they went along. In the end I kept the damaged wooden panel, as I will keeping my business away from this place. read more

Artist & Craftsman Supply is a great art supply store a few blocks away from the Ave and Mercury Theater in the University District. It'll take you around 10 minutes to walk there from the U District Station. It's pretty inconspicuous, down around the corner of what used to be Petco and across the street from Fedex. But once you enter -- Wow, it's huge! This art supply store is well-stocked and will have almost anything you're looking for. If you're an art student at UW and the University Bookstore or Blick don't have what you're looking for, try here! I love that the vibe inside feels really local and loved; not like a chain store. You don't feel rushed out while browsing through the shelves. It's such a treasure trove and if you're prone to picking up new craft projects all the time, beware! Inspiration abounds and you'll find your fingers itching to maybe try out those shiny new mediums... They also have a free membership program! read more

I love the awesome staff and great art supplies! I have been shopping here since 2010. My only regret/ complaint is that they do not have commodities for people with walking disabilities. I tried suggesting about a wheel chair ( no motor) and the response was: " we are not that kind of store...?" I wanted to tell him that a few random placed chairs would suffice, but his attitude was beyond my comprehension and left! There is a big community of disabled people who would love to shop there, if you would consider some suggestions. A few scattered chairs is not a big effort or investment! I don't know if this Lunatic is Racist or what, but apparently I was acting weird because I was watching videos on my phone for inspiration before I bought a sketch book. I was told they're about to close when they weren't!! And was harrased the remainder of my time in the store being followed around like a puppy Dogg for no reason. I've never stolen a thing from this store and that's how I'm treated huh. Just to top it off, she literally told the cashier not to sell me the sketch book I wanted!! TF? I love this art store. It's the best stocked art supply store in Seattle. I've been coming here for years but lately the staff has turned sour and distrustful. I was there today and the gal behind the counter was so bothered i asked for help and immediately assumed I was there with bad intent. Her attitude was terrible, she pulled an art set out of my hands as if i would walk away with it when she looked away. This is getting so tiring. Im a professional artists and have spent thousands of dollars here over my career and i'm considering just buying online and skipping the palatable hostility and distrust. It's disheartening to be constantly treated with suspicion. I want to support local businesses but i think today is the last straw. Sadly, this store is going way down hill. We were just there today and the selection is spotty. Many paint colors not in stock. In general the place looked. rundown and poorly kept up and thinly stocked. I will drive all the way to the interbay and go to Michaels now, sigh. Parking is also real weird these days. You used to be able to turn to the left and into their lot off 45th and just park. But that turn is now blocked off so there is no way to reach the store except by going around the block before them. And then you have to go through an elaborate procedure to register your license plate because it is a pay lot which gives their customers the use of it. read more

Oh my gosh.... what a fun little piece of paradise for artists of all skill types! This place was not at all what I expected just looking at it from the outside. It's wayyyy bigger on the inside, and has fun niche type items sold inside. I could quite literally spend hours here. Aside from art supplies, this is a great place to get a funny/cool gift for someone. I've gotten several birthday presents from here because the types of things they sell are so unique. I don't have kids but I imagine if I did, my kids would love this place too! There's an entire section just for kid-type items. If you have a weird artsy hobby and have difficulty finding certain items for your craft, I'd recommend searching here first. Odds are, they'll have it! read more

This place has everything you could want! They stock all of my favorite paints-- Golden, Daniel Smith, Holbein. They have a wide selection of paper, pads of paper, rolls of paper, and paper for all kinds of art/drafts/paints. They also have things that you wouldn't think to look for in a generic art store--carving stones, tools, fake tattoos, and beautiful wrapping papers. There are a lot of helpful signs everywhere, but sometimes they get drowned out in the sheer splendor of art supplies. The staff is very knowledgeable, and much more willing to help you find something. Couple cuties work here. They give discounts for art teachers as well. This place is an art supply gold mine. Fine art, hobby art--it's all here under one fantastic roof. They have my favorite (but hard to find) pentel slicci pens, and the full gamut of col-erase & very thin Prismacolor pencils. I've recently gotten into fountain pens and was surprised-not-surprised when they had the carbon black ink I wanted. So, chances are they have what you're looking for, and then some. What sets this store apart from others that also have large selections, is the vibe. Without naming names, some stores in the area feel too precious and little pretentious, while others feel too sterile or big box-y. But the vibe here is just right: a vast and well curated selection accompanied by a fun, colorful environment that embraces and encourages creativity of all kinds. (They even have a small set up (for kids and adults alike) to experiment with various art supplies, and pin up their creations....though has probably been dismantled due to the pandemic.) Speaking of the pandemic, they are dutifully following all the proper procedures and protocol, including limiting the number of people allowed inside at once. I appreciate this! The only bummer is that sometimes certain supplies are out of stock. I find that the Holbein gouache display is often lacking colors, and occasionally the sketchbooks I'm looking for are sold out. That said, whenever I've asked "when is ___ going to be back in stock" the staff are always happy to place orders if you know what you want specifically. Bonus: FREE PARKING if you park in the lot across the street and indicate (via the parking meter) that you are a patron of the store, your ticket will grant you an hour or two of free parking. read more

I'm pretty lucky that there are so many great art supply stores in Seattle. Recently, I explored the Artist & Craftsman Supply Store in the U District and was totally wowed. This being my first visit, I wasn't sure where I could park for free (I know, I'm cheap) so I parked a couple blocks away. That was completely unnecessary, because across the street from A&C is a paid parking lot, but that you can park in for up to a couple hours for free while shopping at A&C. Mmmm, I would say that for pens, pencils and paper, A&C is superior to both Blick and Daniel Smith (though neither of those two stores are slouches on this particular consideration). I just could not get over the vast, vast, vast selection of paper, including comic book cover sheets, manga art boards, tuppence sketch bond, Normandy erasable, newsprint, vellum, Paris paper, plate surface, canvas, marker, tracing, toned tan, pastel, sulphite construction, and on and on. Kinda like a glimpse into heaven. Prices are reasonable too. read more

I don't really have much of an artistic side. I've never painted a mural in my house. Anything beyond a solid color confuses me. I don't even do performance art. But if I did do any of those sort of things, I'd be continuously going to Artist and Craftsman Supply to fuel my creative side. It's tucked away in the back of a small strip-mall type area just off I-5. It looks like it's going to be a tiny shop: no real parking, limited signage, miniature Being John Malkovich-sized door in the back. But once you walk in, the place defies space and time; it's far, far, far larger than you'd expect. The front room has paints, brushes, and other sundry gadgets while a gigantic back room sits mostly hidden from view. In the back, there's a huge array of frames, wood and foamboard all at reasonable prices. There's enough stuff here that even my creatively-deficient self could find the items I needed. read more

It does require that our vehicle be registered at the parking meter with the license plate number. This store has a lot of stuffs. My teenage daughters were impressed. Clerk walks up - "Need some help?" I answer - "I do. I want to unleash the artist within me." (Ok, YOU can stop laughing now.) The clerk didn't laugh at me, didn't even show a hint of amusement. He kindly asked me what kind of artist did I aspire to be - a painter I replied - and he led me to the paint area - asked me if I knew what type of paint I'd like to try - acrylic I said - and he began to patiently explain the world of acrylic painting. I left with tubes of beautiful colors, canvases, brushes and my head held high with pride as I imagined the masterpieces I was going to create! Well, it's been about a month since that virgin trip and I've been back several times. I'm a painter now. I've added more colors, more brushes, more canvases and an easel. That same clerk is helping me move up the ladder of creativity - we're talking mediums now (it's kinda technical, so I won't overwhelm you with those details! ;) ) Really. This place is great. I feel so welcomed. They may have had a good laugh over me when I left that first visit - but while I was there, and every time since then, they have been great. Not once did they try and sell me the expensive stuff or things I really don't need! I may not know what the hell I'm doing, but I'm having fun. Ok all. I've been bad. I know. I've barely reviewed anything of late. But this place has inspired me to tell you all. To tell you all of its pure mindblowingness (and yes, I make up words- a lot, some call it quirky.. I call it endearingness.) All pray to this artist MECCA. Worship its painted exterior and kiss its cool painted concrete floors. I was immediately drawn to this place like Elmer Fudd would be drawn to a wabbit hunting store. It wouldn't suprise me if this place used Acme as a vendor, although you won't find outlandish and downright dangerous products that failed catastrophically at the worst possible times here. You'll only find arty/crafty goodi goodi gum drops that will release your inner artiste and/or simply make you artisticer than you already are. I mean I almost did a cart-wheel-ack-arrest when I found the following items one after another: full sheets of magnetic paper, blank puzzles for me to paint on, all the molding gels I could ever dream of, Mr.Smelly markers from my chilhood, a whole room of canvas, and a 10 pc set of Conte portrait colors. For those of you who don't know what Conte is, Wikepedia says they "are a drawing medium composed of compressed powdered graphite or charcoal mixed with a wax or clay base." I say Conte is awesome McPossum and I ran home to use them to create very realistic skin tones on all my drawings. So in conclusion: If you are an artist and/or not an artist or even a wombat that wants to get down and craftsterbate. A&C is the Mecca of all art places and should be visited in the near future.
