From the first meeting, I could tell Steve was an unconventional kind of contractor and was willing to work WITH me to get the exact results I wanted. We spend at least an hour in person reviewing the project, then several rounds of phone call/emails back and forth to hammer out the details and price. Compared to my other bids for the exact same work, Steve's bid was exceptionally detailed (I kid you not, down to the nuts and bolts required) and was SUBSTANTIALLY cheaper--so much so that I hired him on the spot when I got his final reworked bid. I am a pretty particular person (some might say a micro-manager), and I had a very specific vision for how I wanted the fence to be built and look. Steve (and his employees Chris & Patrick) were completely receptive to my input and turned the whole project into a collaborative effort in figuring out how to solve some of the more unique issues that arose during the construction. For me and my personality, that worked out perfectly. I am sure other contractors would have totally blown their lid dealing with me onsite everyday asking questions and talking, but Steve's guys took it in stride and the added collaboration really worked out for the benefit of the final result. The final fence built is so amazing people literally stop as they drive by and shout to ask who did the fence for me. I have even had SEVERAL people knock on my front door and ask for the contractor who built the fence. Part of that is down to my killer modern fence design (Steve know's I am right on that!), but most of it falls down to Steve's excellent execution of my vision. Due to the complexity of the project, Steve estimated 3-4 weeks, and they landed a little early at 3 weeks despite a few mix-ups and change orders. As the project was wrapping up, I was really looking forward to hiring Steve to do more work on other landscaping projects, but sadly, Steve told me he was moving home to be closer to family and this was his last project! In the future, listen to your potential customers' price concerns, hear their needs (yes, price-per-square-foot is indeed important), and do not comment on their marriage.

Moore, owner of Pacific Landscaping &…read moreMaintenance, for an estimate on a project involving plant installation, irrigation installation, re-grading, crushed rock, and a curb rock bed. He arrived on time and handed us a business card. However, the rest of the meeting did not go well for us. He spoke very quickly and looked at his phone frequently, and we felt he was not fully listening to what we wanted. When I scheduled our appointment, we sent him our designer's plan, which showed bender board separating the small rocks from the large ones, along with photographs of our property. He therefore had the full scope of work before he arrived. Yet his first statement to us at the meeting was, "This job is not so simple," which contradicted what he had said when I scheduled the appointment. He also told us the bender board was not necessary. Our property is on a slope; hence, the two different rocks would most certainly mix over time. Next, he said previous contractors' quotes had not included enough rock and recommended roto-tilling the property. He did not take any measurements before saying we would need more rock, stating he could estimate the amount by eye. When I asked whether he planned to measure, given the quantity involved, he said it wasn't necessary but agreed to do so reluctantly. During the meeting, he mentioned several times how busy he was and that he had 20 employees. He also criticized the other contractors we had received estimates from, which we found unprofessional. While my wife was still explaining what we were looking for, he said he did not want to take on the job and walked away. We found this rude. We also waited a full week between our initial contact and this meeting, and we were left puzzled as to why he bothered to schedule our appointment when he said he was so busy. I'm sharing this so other customers can factor it into their decision.
