A five-star review when they didn't have what I went there for?…read more This is about the service, not necessarily the store itself. I really had to have a specific product: what? OK, it was the Caran D'ache Grafcube, red tint. There's no place that has this and I *had* to have it *now*, so I checked Blick's website and the store availability checker... In stock in Harlem (only). I'm in Brooklyn but it's a nice bike ride, so on my way... I get there, it's right near the Studio Museum (YES! MY FAVORITE NYC MUSEUM) I find the right aisle, I find the Caran D'ache case which says "Grafcube RGB" - the EMPTY case! The lady who had already offered to help me was still nearby, so I asked her. She checked and the inventory system said there were several in stock. There are overstock cartons above the shelves, labelled with brand or media type. This incredible person (drum roll here...) N'Deye (pronounced En-Day, BTW) reassures me that we'll find them, gets a ladder and starts taking down and going through each obvious carton. When we've exhausted those, she then goes through the non-obvious cartons. We examined about 30 cartons(!) When we cannot find them, she gets a colleague (manager maybe) and he tells her some things to check in the inventory system and they determine that they're not actually in the store (last received over a year ago), maybe stolen. N'Deye then apologized so profusely and sincerely. Hey. at this point I was so touched by all of the attention that had been given, I was fine :) So... disappointing trip...? Let's see Blick stock control: 0 stars Blick location: 4 stars Blick associate N'Deye: 11 stars Other Blick associate (sorry, I didn't get your name): 5 stars Average: (0+4+11+5)/4 = 5 Stars! But really, it's all about N'Deye - Blick management please take notice and recognize this! P.S. I did find the Red Grafcube (YAY*2) as part of a set they had at Janoff's, which I decided to try since I was already 12 miles from home

Like having Blick nearby in Harlem - a great local resource for art supplies!…read more While I'm not a regular shopper there due to my limited needs and their prices, but found they have a good selection and in-store helpful, expertise. Like also their graffiti wall at street level. Recommend you check this Blick out!

I recently got into sewing so I definitely wanted to stop by and check it out. I bought 6 yards of fabric for $32 and my mind was blown. Thats such a great deal! The folks there are very knowledgable and helpful. I've lived here all my life and never knew this shop existed. So happy this place is still around, I'll definitely be coming back for more fabrics.

I was making pants for the first time and they were different colors, so the materials had to work well together as far as weight and appearance. This is a family-owned, Black-owned, women-owned, small business in the Bronx and they don't stop at just offering fabric, trimmings and tailoring. They also host sewing camps for kids and adults. They have various types of machines thta you cna come in to try out and see what might work for you. The prices of their fabrics are reasonable. I did purchase some shears that I was able to find for less money elsewhere, and I was able to return them in exchange for store credit. This policy did not bother me because I plan to return for more fabric, as our cosplay is quickly becoming an annual tradition, but be advised that you will get store credit in lieu of a full refund. Owners, Clarissa and Nadine, are very knowledgeable and a wealth of tips and suggestions. If you're just starting our, they are perfect to answer any questions you may have. I'm fairly new and went in not know what I could do. I basically just explained my dilemma and was directed to the best fabric for what I wanted to construct. It was the first time I ever made pants, two-toned no less, and they came out amazing. When I visited, I had my kiddo with me and she was gifted with some scrap fabric and an elastic band, and a quick tutorial to construct a simple scrunchie. She was super ecstatic and I hope she takes to sewing as I have. I will definitely be regularly visiting for my cosplay construction needs.

My goal for this year has been to try new things and have new experiences. And as someone who loves…read moreto create, work with my hands, get messy and fill my home with things that I made, a potter course was a no brainer! Blue Skies Pottery has been on my radar for a while. I no longer live in Hoboken, but still really wanted to try my hand at their wheel course! For 2 hours, you get to done an apron, and learn from one of their very kind and patient instructors. We first made a bowl but mine somehow did not make it to the actual bowl stage. I was encouraged by the intructor saying that going too far is what pottery is all about. Why play it safe when you can just mush it back into a big ball and start over. So try 2 was for a vase! Sure it's short and swirly and imperfect but I personally love it and it now holds all of my make up brushes proudly. Their beginners course is $75 for a two hour lesson. You can choose to fire your piece or pieces for an additional $15 a piece. So really the wonky vase you think looks silly is actually a $90 ceramic masterpiece... You pick them up a month later and marvel at the fact that this was just a blob of clay 30 days prior. I'm now soooo excited to try one of the 6 week courses and get better and better, but really just mostly love the idea of working with my hands uninterrupted each week. Thanks for a wonderful experience!!

Each class holds a maximum of 8 people (please don't be late). This was always something I wanted to do ever since I saw the film, Ghost. Sue makes it a point to know everyone's name from the start but she gave me a special one...mom, because I came with my 21 year old son. Lol. She kept the entire class laughing throughout by getting to know each of us personally. I really enjoyed the group we were with. I already knew that I wanted to make a bowl so I can display it in my home. I wound up with a little dish instead. On my 2nd attempt I was like okay, you got this, you can make a bowl. I must have put too much pressure on the clay while going too fast on the pedal. Sue shouts out...look at mom go, she made another good looking plate. I guess I can use it as a jewelry dish. The pieces need time to dry. Choose the colors you want on the wall and they will glaze it for you. You pick up the finished pieces in 4 weeks. Please check out their website for prices. This was an introduction session but they also have weekly classes. I thought it was so sweet of Sue to ask if I had fun. I replied...I sure did because YOU made it fun for all of us!!! I highly recommend this activity if you've never done it before. I found it very therapeutic. You will also have the softest skin ever after you wash the clay off your hands. I had a blast. This place is located in Hoboken, NJ, hometown of Frank Sinatra. It's full of tree lined streets, cafes, and amazing restaurants. So come make a day out of it.

What really sealed the deal for me was the ability to paint and leave with your masterpiece on the very same day. It was super important for the kids to take home what they worked on; waiting a whole week for a pot to cure and dry is something we can save for a future birthday. From the moment we walked in, we were warmly welcomed. There were other kids happily making soap, and the woman who greeted us kindly explained that we could pick whatever we wanted to paint. Once we selected our items, we paid and were set up at a table with paints, brushes, and an apron. I'm so glad she made sure we knew the paint didn't wash out of clothes. Pro-tip: Even if you're not painting, wear the apron. Trust me, your shirt will thank you for this advice! The kids had an absolute blast. It was so interactive, and once they finished, they had blow dryer stations so we could dry the paint. The best part? They took the painted items to the back and made them all shiny! This place is a definite hit. And I hear it's fun even for adults with no kids in tow. Girls' night, anyone? Sign me up!

Fortunately, the number of stars that I had for each experience was five. The first time around I painted the Cinderella figure and my mother painted the pumpkin figure. The second time around we painted mugs. The two projects required two different types of paint. Unfortunately, the prices are kind of insane. The Cinderella figure was $49.99 plus tax, the pumpkin was $29.99 plus tax, and both mugs were $29.99 plus tax. Even though it was expensive I still had so much fun and everything I made came out looking great. Everything my mom made came out looking great. I can see myself coming back, and I can't wait to see what my pieces look like once they're out of the kiln.
