My goal for this year has been to try new things and have new experiences. And as someone who loves to create, work with my hands, get messy and fill my home with things that I made, a potter course was a no brainer! Blue Skies Pottery has been on my radar for a while. I no longer live in Hoboken, but still really wanted to try my hand at their wheel course! For 2 hours, you get to done an apron, and learn from one of their very kind and patient instructors. We first made a bowl but mine somehow did not make it to the actual bowl stage. I was encouraged by the intructor saying that going too far is what pottery is all about. Why play it safe when you can just mush it back into a big ball and start over. So try 2 was for a vase! Sure it's short and swirly and imperfect but I personally love it and it now holds all of my make up brushes proudly. Their beginners course is $75 for a two hour lesson. You can choose to fire your piece or pieces for an additional $15 a piece. So really the wonky vase you think looks silly is actually a $90 ceramic masterpiece... You pick them up a month later and marvel at the fact that this was just a blob of clay 30 days prior. I'm now soooo excited to try one of the 6 week courses and get better and better, but really just mostly love the idea of working with my hands uninterrupted each week. First rule of pottery class...don't be sorry. Second rule of pottery class...just have fun. Our instructor, Sue, was welcoming as soon as we arrived. Each class holds a maximum of 8 people (please don't be late). This was always something I wanted to do ever since I saw the film, Ghost. Sue makes it a point to know everyone's name from the start but she gave me a special one...mom, because I came with my 21 year old son. Lol. She kept the entire class laughing throughout by getting to know each of us personally. I really enjoyed the group we were with. I already knew that I wanted to make a bowl so I can display it in my home. I wound up with a little dish instead. On my 2nd attempt I was like okay, you got this, you can make a bowl. I must have put too much pressure on the clay while going too fast on the pedal. Sue shouts out...look at mom go, she made another good looking plate. I guess I can use it as a jewelry dish. The pieces need time to dry. Choose the colors you want on the wall and they will glaze it for you. You pick up the finished pieces in 4 weeks. Please check out their website for prices. This was an introduction session but they also have weekly classes. I thought it was so sweet of Sue to ask if I had fun. I replied...I sure did because YOU made it fun for all of us!!! I highly recommend this activity if you've never done it before. I found it very therapeutic. You will also have the softest skin ever after you wash the clay off your hands. I had a blast. This place is located in Hoboken, NJ, hometown of Frank Sinatra. It's full of tree lined streets, cafes, and amazing restaurants. So come make a day out of it. read more

I was excited for this class!! My friends and I have a New Year's resolution where want to try new things! Unfortunately our experience wasn't what we were expecting. Our teacher was honestly a bit rude. We are new to this and she made us feel a bit dumb when asking questions. We felt as though she was talking down to us. It was tough to follow along at times too. It's supposed to be a fun class, which we did enjoy the actual creating part, but wish it was a lighter environment. I was also bummed because I actually created a pretty good piece but when the instructor went to touch it up a bit she ended up ruining it! I didn't have much time left at that point to start over. She created a new one for me, but that was a major bummer. I have no clue why I even purchased it, as it wasn't my creation. I wanted to take mine home. That was the point of the class. With this in mind, I do feel that the class price should include a piece to take home. Also, the half hour clean up was a bit disappointing as well. I've been to other types of art classes and never spent 1/3 of the class cleaning up. Well, gave have it a go! Trying a new spot next time. read more

THE BEST PLACE!!! Was looking for a new experience for my 7 year old to try and I'm so happy that this studio came up! He started camp last week and asks to go back everyday! The staff is friendly and so good with the kids. With his excitement it made my husband and I want to try ourselves and are scheduled to go in next week. Blue Skies Pottery was one of the most unique experiences I've had in a while! I participated in the one time introductory class for $75 and it was worth every penny for the chance to try a completely new craft. Upon arrival I was greeted by Judy who was also the class leader for the day, it was a small class with just me and one other couple so we really got one on one feedback from her. Judy was incredibly friendly and her expertise in guiding us beginners through the steps of throwing on the wheel and shaping the clay made the time fly because we were having so much fun. The introductory class really was no experience required and I believe anyone could do it. Judy had incredibly positive energy and stepped in to help out whenever we needed / asked for it, so I cannot thank her enough for making the class so wonderful! The 90 minute timeframe was enough to make 2 pieces, both of which I ended up keeping. Unfortunately I did not get any pictures of the pieces because my hands were covered in clay, but I'm so excited to see how they turn out when I go pick them up. TOTAL RIP-OFF - UNPROFESSIONAL I took the single class workshop for $95. The class was supposed to be from 3pm - 4:30pm. The instructor didn't arrive at the studio until 3pm. A previous class was still using the studio. The instructor then began to prepare the studio for the class (portioning and manipulating the clay, getting equipment ready, etc.) while we all stood around for thirty minutes. At 3:30, the previous class finally vacated and we all sat at the wheels. The instructor had us go get buckets and sponges and fill the buckets at the sink. This took a while so it was about 3:50 before we were all seated back at the wheels. The instructor then FINALLY began the class. She gave us some vague instructions. She didn't tell us how to turn on the wheel or how to control the speed. Another student showed us how to do that. The instructor gave us about two instructions on what to do with the clay. At 4:15, she stopped the class and told us we had to clean up before the next class began. She barked at us to finish cleaning for the next class. She broke my vase when she was removing it from the wheel. She said to me, "You didn't really want that. Did you?". I said I wanted the vase and couldn't she fix it. She said she would see what she could do. She was supposed to fire the clay after the class and call us when it was ready for pick-up. I never received the vase. So for $95, I received about twenty minutes of flimsy instruction and never received the vase I made. read more

It was my first time doing pottery since elementary school art class and I was a little rusty but the instructor was helpful in getting us all comfortable using the wheel.
