A five-star review when they didn't have what I went there for? This is about the service, not necessarily the store itself. I really had to have a specific product: what? OK, it was the Caran D'ache Grafcube, red tint. There's no place that has this and I *had* to have it *now*, so I checked Blick's website and the store availability checker... In stock in Harlem (only). I'm in Brooklyn but it's a nice bike ride, so on my way... I get there, it's right near the Studio Museum (YES! MY FAVORITE NYC MUSEUM) I find the right aisle, I find the Caran D'ache case which says "Grafcube RGB" - the EMPTY case! The lady who had already offered to help me was still nearby, so I asked her. She checked and the inventory system said there were several in stock. There are overstock cartons above the shelves, labelled with brand or media type. This incredible person (drum roll here...) N'Deye (pronounced En-Day, BTW) reassures me that we'll find them, gets a ladder and starts taking down and going through each obvious carton. When we've exhausted those, she then goes through the non-obvious cartons. We examined about 30 cartons(!) When we cannot find them, she gets a colleague (manager maybe) and he tells her some things to check in the inventory system and they determine that they're not actually in the store (last received over a year ago), maybe stolen. N'Deye then apologized so profusely and sincerely. Hey. at this point I was so touched by all of the attention that had been given, I was fine :) So... disappointing trip...? What a quiet, air-conditioned underground oasis. I mean, what can I say... Blick is a national chain (possibly international)with pricy, but good quality art supplies. The store is clean. Everyone seems eager to help and point you in the right direction. (Although that part did get a bit overwhelming--like I was being followed around the store). But moving on... I really enjoyed the little "how-to" posters with directions. All in all, it's the same store I remember visiting back in Berkeley, California. I like how the place is designed and I got what I needed! But here's why I'm not coming back to this particular location: Months ago, at the cash register, I paid with a $10 bill to buy some dye for a cosplay. The cashier (I believe her name was Tuesday) tested it to make sure it's real? Usually cashiers would do it with $100 or $50 (which I understand), but it was a freaking $10 bill and the person at the register thought it was fake. And according to some reviews, they do it to other black customers. That's low key racist and hopefully they learned how to treat people of color better since a majority who live in Harlem are. read more

Previous to the opening of this store Artist and Craftsman Supply was around the corner. They closed when Blick moved into the neighborhood. Unfortunately Blick DOES NOT carry any of the specialty items they did and as a result I have to travel allllll the way to Bushwick! to get the supplies I got locally for years. It's annoying! I called for help and your manager was annoyed I wanted things they don't and will never carry. You're move took something special away. Corporate crap. read more

Somewhere in the world there's is an art store with employees who provide you with complete information so you are able to make an informed decision. Unfortunately, this place is not it. Pros: It's a standard Blick store with the usual fare of appropriate supplies. Tatiana Cons: Framing dept. I came in looking to get a mat with a window cut and encountered the equivalent of death by a thousand cuts. Or is it: angst with a thousand 'buts'? Every time I asked a question I was provided with just enough of an answer to send me in the right direction while leaving the scenario open for a subsequent rejection. Here's a tip, if your employees can announce right from the start that anything they select will not be available for purchase today, that would help. Second: I don't understand the need for a 'rush' fee when your employee is standing around doing absolutely nothing. The only highlight of the visit was Tatiana who I encountered very briefly but was very welcoming, took the initiative to ask if I needed help, and who I observed (not in a creepy way) helping another customer as endless questions were answerved. Other admirable employees were Abelard and Ariana. Definitely get your help from either of these three. read more

So great to have a well stocked art supply store uptown! Not their biggest location but way more convenient. Staff is incredibly nice and helpful. Tuesday in particular always has excellent suggestions and advice for whatever project I'm shopping for. That's the benefit of a physical store with knowledgeable staff! read more

If you are a person of color you will be racially profiled. It has happened to me twice. As soon as I walked in both times, I was asked if I needed help and then they never left. It was so uncomfortable..... Then at the register every bill was scanned to make sure it was real. Please change how people of color are being treated. I know its a new store, but I dont want to feel like Im under surveillance everytime I come in. read more

We're visiting from Canada and found this store to be just wonderful. It had many of the things myartists wife was looking for, and the staff were very knowledgeable, helpful, and provided top-notch customer service. Having worked at two companies that empahsized excellent and even outrageous customer service - Black's Camera and Games Workshop, I know what great customer service looks and feels like, and the Blicks staff at this location are at the top of their game. Of special note we're Tuesday and Taredo (sorry if I got your name wrong here) were brilliant, making us feel welcome, important, and valued. These folks, and their store get full marks. read more

My daughter loves this store, and yesterday I went in there with her and my sister. My daughter is very indecisive so she had us in there for a while. My sister was going to purchase some stones and I was looking for a tag that I wrote on one the shelves near the pens that I made on my previous visits to that location ( you can write on the shelves ) it's a cool store ! BUT the lady in there came the isle and asked us if we were okay but she made it seem like she was watching us. It was extremely uncomfortable so we put the things we were going to purchase down and we left. I will never go back in there again. I will never give them my money after yesterday. read more

This place is great for painters. They always have what you need in stock. I'm a painter, and was happy to see that they offer very affordable and wide range of both acrylic and oil paints. They also provide student discount, and offer to reimburse you if they are selling anything for less on their online website. So happy to have an art store uptown. read more

Honestly a great addition to Harlem. Not as big as the Blick that's downtown but they have a variety of things. The staff was very helpful and answered our questions with clear and informative answers. They even told us that we could get a discount because my wife is still a college student. Ethel and Q were great employees. They were great at helping choose items. Tho it was closing time they did not rush me. Ethel was such a pleasant person. Will come again and hope she is kind enough to help me again if i need her. This place is great for topping off art supplies you may already have at home. Or a starter artist. More intricate art supplies would have to still be purchased from the 23 st location more than likely. But it wouldn't hurt to pop in and see what they have.
