I've been putting off writing a review for this place a while now. I actually never knew it existed until I got fed up with my old stylist and went on a search for another. It's been a very pleasant find and I'm so glad I did! I've never felt nervous about the outcome ever since my first visit, because I had no idea what I was getting myself into. By pure luck, I landed into the hands of Romi. I've been going to her for a year now and I've never had a complaint! Her haircuts and coloring for me have always turned out great. I also try to avoid going there on the weekends, so all my experiences have been great on weekdays. It's usually not that busy and it's peaceful sitting in that chair. Their service is always very respectful and nice, so I don't think I'm going anywhere else any time soon! read more

I never actually write reviews, but I think I need to warn everyone who's going to get balayage here. The color is so yellow/brassy and the hand painted part is very patchy. I just honestly don't know how to express how much I regret spending $350 (+parking) for such a terrible result. A bit hard to find at first, I didn't bother to look up to the second floor until I went down the block and didn't see any salon. Tricky, but that's how it is in Japan as well, hard to find niche. The white reflective bright place is lovely, feels clean, professional. The staff on the phone was slightly annoyed when I tried making the appointment because I was coming from a traffic ridden area, so wasn't too sure if I could make it on time. Nonetheless I called right before the appt time because I was 30 min late and they were very accommodating (not sure if it's a different staff answering phone), they reassured me I was good. The service from beginning to end was awesome. The massage while washing my hair feels great. While cutting the hair dresser made sure if she did this this would happen, etc making me aware and allowing me to have the choice to do which ever. Terrible service. I booked a keratin treatment weeks ago. I specifically asked how long it will take and the receptionist said 1 hour. I finally come on Mother's Day after having planned the whole day around this appointment. I go in on time and they said they booked me for just a regular treatment not keratin so they cannot do it for me. I told them that I specifically requested a keratin treatment on the phone and even if they misheard it is incredibly irresponsible to reject a client that took time and effort to get to the salon. Yumiko did a tremendous job on my hair and once again I'm so thankful for everyone at arty. I've been dying my hair crazy colors for almost 9 years and I finally decided I wanted to go a bit more natural and Yumiko gave me exactly what I wanted. She was very helpful with helping me decide exactly what I wanted to do and the best options for my hair. Not only did I have a great experience due to my hair but also do to their safety precautions. They had a separate mask that sticks to my face so it isn't in the way of styling as well as so I don't get my own mask dirty or damaged. They also had a small box for each patron to put their own belongings in. Yumiko even grabbed a small towel so I didn't have to put my glasses and mask down on the actual counter. Arty never disappoints and I will always recommend this salon to anyone that asks. I've always had the hardest time finding the right hairstylist and I found this salon via yelp. My mom and I traveled all the way from Hercules! Yumiko was very friendly to greed us at the door and listened to what style I wanted and I showed her a few photos as well. I had a wolf cut with curtain bangs. I wanted tons of layers and asked to thinned out my hair. She was very detailed and careful. End result I loved it and I don't say that a lot about my haircuts I've had in the past. She also styled it so I know how it can look. My mom's hair is THICK and she came in for a trim with Romi. My mom just want simple trim and THIN THIN THIN out her hair b/c its just soo much of it. Romi did a great job and she was super detailed when cutting her hair. She spend a good amount of 1.5 hr b/c I can tell she didn't want to rush the cut and wanted to make sure my mom's hair was thinned out. Overall both our cuts were $80.00 each. It's a bit more than what I'm used to but it's worth it and worth the drive. I would definitely come back b/c its a super friendly and the hairstylists listens to what you want and would provide feedback if it doesn't work in a certain way or would suggest a different approach which is what you want from your hairstylist. read more

They are polite and detail-oriented, but they (Romi) doesn't know what Ombre is and has a strange sense of aesthetics. She can do a good job for simple whole head coloring, but somehow she picked contrasting colors that appear to be brown/red and blue...while none of the pictures I showed her have contrasting ombre.. and why red/blue ..... She fixed it once by coloring it again but it was still terrible. Nothing like the ash color but dark blue at the end while orange on the top. She did offer to fix it again but my hair can't take bleach and dye over and over again.. plus I can't stay there for another 3 hours.. I am so sad and wish it will not happen to you. read more

I used to go to Hair Caffe on Sutter. Pre-pandemic it used to get booked 2 months in advance, since 2020, it's nearly impossible to make appts there and the rate has gone up. I've been going to Yumiko at Arty for a few months now, she couldn't be nicer and I've liked the results better than Hair Caffe. I don't color or perm, just need a good cut for long bob. I just got my hair cut by Yumiko~ I was looking for a place that knew how to cut stubbornly straight and flat Asian hair, and I wanted to make sure I went somewhere that was experienced because I decided to go from long to short hair. The last time I cut my hair short was in Shibuya Tokyo, Japan and I'd say my experience at Arty was on par with Japan. They were super nice when and immediately greeted me when I arrived. Yumiko asked what I wanted to do with my hair and I told her that I wanted to slight A line lob/bob that ended at my collar bone. And she did exactly that! I had a few pictures for reference and she did great. They also shampooed my hair and gave me a nice head massage. Yumiko made sure to ask me if I was okay with some layers and how short I wanted my bangs. I felt reassured that she was going to do a great with all the effort she put into communicating with me during the cut. She was super sweet and I'd like to come back for my next haircut if I'm still in the bay area. I had a haircut in Daly City for $30 (his hands reeked of cigarettes, my hair came out 3 inch shorter than I wanted AND with choppy layers that I didn't ask)-- and here at Arty my haircut came out to $70 (excluding tip). And to be honest, paying an extra $40 for a stellar haircut with someone who is experience, pleasant, actually listens to what you want, and communicates with you is totally worth it! When I went there for my haircut back in July I was a bit skeptical because all my previous visit to other salons didn't end well since they either didn't know what they were doing or just didn't give me what I asked for. I've been meaning to try a Japanese salon for many years - and after two years in Seattle of not finding any great stylists, I decided to buck up and treat myself to a nice, premium cut when I moved out here. Figuring that the director himself would be a smart choice, I scheduled an appointment with Kudo-san and went in with high hopes for an amazing fobby Japanese do. First things first - Arty is actually wheelchair accessible. Not by the front entrance, no, but if you call them and let them know you've arrived, they'll take you to a service elevator in the back, that takes you up to the level of the salon. A little under an hour, and $60 later, I came out with a very technically skilled cut, but certainly not one as unique as I was hoping for - in fact, it ended up being very similar to every hair cut I've ever been given in the past, which was disappointing. How much of this had to do with me voicing my own opinions, I do not know. But, it seems like every time I see a stylist without something already in mind, I always end up getting the same cut (where's the creativity people!? I leave it to you because I don't know!). So, again, a very skilled cut, just not very inspired. Women might fare better, but if I'm shelling out that much, I'm expecting something new and amazing. I got my hair cut in Japan a couple years ago, and have let it grow out and gotten it cut elsewhere since I got back; recently, I decided I wanted to get it cut Japanese-style again, yelped, and found this salon. Kudo-san, the director, cut my hair and I'm ABSOLUTELY COMPLETELY HAPPY with it! :) In fact, I think I like this cut even better than the cut I got in Japan. I showed him a few pictures and pointed out aspects in each that I liked, and he totally made them work for my hair. He even taught me a fairly simple way to style it and get what I want from it. The total process took only an hour, including shampoo, cut, shoulder massage, and styling/style teaching. My hair is now layered in a way that only Japanese stylists can do. And only $55? No extra charge for length, and no extra charge for an appointment with the director? I am SO coming back. Looks like I'll only be going to Aveda for color and deep conditioning from now on. I've been going to get my haircut and sometimes color from Kyoko for over 10yrs now. I love love Kyoko. She's such an amazing hair artist. Her cuts are always what I want (I usually take Pinterest pictures with me) and when it grows, it grows out well so I don't have to get regular cuts. I recently went in for a haircut, and it was a first time since the lockdow due to COVID-19, so you can imagine the sate of my hair. The staff was very diligent about following protocols and every customer were positioned more than 6 ft apart from one another. The entire salon, as always, was very clean and you can tell they worked hard to maintain that. My stylist, Yumiko, had face masks and face shields, and she was very thoughtful and careful. Unfortunately I didn't qualify to get a digital perm because my hair was too light and dry. I didn't have highlights in my hair, just color, but I guess I need to grow it out and have leave-in conditioner to rehydrate my hair. I opted for a regular haircut since I traveled all the way to SF Japantown for this. The haircut was nice and soothing because I received a massage during and after the shampoo and also after my hair cut. Mako did a great job with the cut and made sure I liked every bit of it. I only wished I was able to get a digital perm. The hair cut was $60 and the prices are going to increase in January to $70. Cost of digital perm is from $180-220 depending on the length of your hair. The digital perm also includes hair cut. Touch up for color is $120 which includes the hair cut. My friend recommended me to this place and said you get free drinks. I wasn't offered any drinks, so not sure what happened to that drink menu. I did a lot of research before choosing Arty and had very high hopes. My hair is long, straight, medium texture, but not very thick. I get fantastic results with a 1 1/4 inch barrel curling iron for waves and volume, but I thought a digital perm might save me some time. I had a digital perm here with Junko. I did not get the result I was looking for, but still felt the experience was favorable and may return in the future. I called about 1 week prior for a weekend appt and had no trouble booking. They answer the phone in Japanese, but switch to English if you respond in English. They called one day prior to confirm your appt. The Salon is clean, bright, and buzzing with activity. Everyone there is friendly despite the frantic pace of everyone's tasks keeping them very busy. I checked in and was directed to sit in their small seating area with a table piled high with hair magazines. The wait was only about 5 minutes (refreshing, as most salons I've been to keep you up to 45 minutes). It was my first time getting a perm so I consulted with Junko who was straightforward about what I should expect. My hair isn't course textured which I guess is ideal for digital perm, she was uncertain if my hair would hold the curl/wave because its smooth texture and that it was too healthy so she wanted to use a smaller rod. (which is funny because I was worried that prior coloring might make my hair too damaged for a digital perm). She showed me several pictures of what my results should look like. I went through the series of pre-treatment and washes, time consuming but it all went pretty quickly. Junko cleaned up my already existing bangs and long layers and it was the best haircut I've had in my life. It gave me shape and movement and volume! I almost decided to stop there but felt $65 is a little high for just a cut that took 10 minutes. I felt my money would at least be worth the effort of the 4hr digital perm @ $200. I should have paid the $65 and left with still straight, but fabulous hair. When she undid the rollers the curls were so tight. I didn't panic because I had read that they would be until the relaxer was applied and the finger waves created. Well, I think Junko overestimated my hairs willingness to hold a curl because the end result was really curly almost spirally. Not the big soft waves I was hoping for. She demonstrated the drying method of twirling the hair around your finger while blow-drying to shape the curls, but still too tight ringlets instead of waves. boo. I had early 90's style hair, I felt like if I ratted my bangs and winged out the sides I'd look like I did when I was 12. She reassured me that the curls would relax after a week or so, but also admitted she should have used much bigger rods. It's been 3 months now and the curl has relaxed a bit, unevenly though (some parts are almost straight, while I still have fairly tight ringlets in spots) and it's not a low maintenence hairstyle like I hoped. I manage to make it pretty enough to get daily compliments, but it takes some effort. I would return to Arty for my haircuts, but I think I'll look elsewhere for digital perms. Is that allowed though or is it considered cheating on your stylist if you go to two different ones? edit: The girl that shampooed my hair did offer me a neck and shoulder massage. She did a great job kneading. She did a little quick handchop that made me scream which was funny and embarrassing. I only screamed because I did not expect it, not because it hurt. read more

I was hesitant after reading some lower reviews but still went with it anyways. When I first called the staff was very accommodating of the appointments and gave me available times. When i finally arrived there I was kind of nervous but everyone was so sweet and friendly. Especially Yumiko, who colored and cut my hair, was welcoming. We went over what I had wanted (full bleach and color + hair cut) and she went above my expectations. From when she was cutting my hair and dying, you could tell that she knew what she was doing. Ill definitely be coming over here again . (also i do wanna add that yumiko still did an amazing job despite my hair being all types of colors. She also went through with what might happen but in my opinion it still came out perfectly. Just got my hair cut with Mako-san. She's super sweet and listened very carefully to what I wanted out of this session. I had my hair cut here last year by Kudo-san and loved it, but my boyfriend wanted me to try his stylist at The Barber Lounge. I liked my initial cut there, but a perm and second cut later, I felt my hair was just too flat and I was working on it way too much than I really wanted to. So I came back to see if we couldn't get back that soft, feminine cut I got a year ago. I did! I swear, I'll come back just to have Mako-san shampoo my head. Feels amaaaaazing... and you also get a little mini massage with your haircut! I was super happy with the soft waves and she thinned out my hair, as it gets thick and sort of mangy within a few months. I finally have all the nice romantic layers I wanted for a mere $60 (not including tip). :D I'm glad I came back! read more

Mako has been doing my hair for almost a year now. Hair cutting, perming, coloring, toning, almost did everything. She's my lifesaver and she's so patient every time and makes very sincere suggestions, I feel she really cares and I trust her so much that sometimes I couldn't decide on something I'll just leave it up to her, she never let me down. I'm super picky about hairstylist, but I have to say she's a keeper. I'm so lucky to have found her and feel like I'll go to her the rest of my life lol. I used to live in SF, then I moved to Sac but I still keep on coming back here. I only cut my hair here! I tried some other salons but Arty always wins my heart. Miji, Kudo or Kumi doesn't really matter they all are very professional! I personally like anything about Japan/Japanese. Had an appointment with Mickey today for a digital perm. Unfortunately, my hair was too damaged in parts, and not long enough to do the treatment, but Mickey was very helpful and recommended coming back in a few months. In the meantime, she did a deep conditioning treatment, and styled it, and I don't think my hair has ever been so nice looking! The treatment does smell a little bit fishy, so maybe there's some kind of fish oil in it. Mickey herself is very sweet and has the same type of hair that I do so she knew what was best for my hair. So while I wait for my hair to grow longer, I'll take better care of it with better conditioning products so I can go back and get the great wavy hair I've always wanted with Mickey. read more

Arty is my favorite hair salon in the Bay Area for perm and haircut! I always walk out with a lovely perm and cut, so lightweight yet full of volume! Parking is easy, both street or in Japantown. I love the service too, all the staff are very attentive, they even have little ear covers to prevent the chemicals from getting on my skin during the perm. They include a little scalp/neck massage and it's just a salon with positive airy vibes. Mako and Misuzu are the best! read more

Ive been coming here for the past few yrs. I've done many style cuts, hair dye, even wave perm. All were great. I've worked with reina and romi. They are the best. Always super friendly, nice, and professional. Romi is my go to girl because she is a perfectionist. Can't leave the place even with a strand of hair out of place. I've been to places where one side is longer than the other and I have to finish it myself. Romi makes sure you love your haircut. The washes are great too, you get a good head and quick neck massage. Plus you get a drink while waiting. read more

This review is for Romi. She is very kind and gentle with her hands and most certainly will ask for your opinion before bleaching away. I go to Romi for bleaching and hair coloring, and I always come out of the salon with relief that my hair looks amazing. I've been to a lot of hair salons, and let's just say there have been too many times where I've suffered the scalp burns and the occasional bad hair dyes with colors I did not like. Romi on the other hand, has a keen eye for detail and is attentive to what you want and aim to get out of the hair appointment. The color is always spot on and she always uses the safest route to lightening hair. She'll also throw in a fun and good conversation. Really enjoyed my experience at Arty! Had my first haircut in SF here after having moved here 2+ years ago. What can I say, I have a tough time trusting new stylists and salons with my hair! I booked a haircut with Mako and she was great, so sweet and friendly. I was able to make a haircut appointment just a few days in advance. We started with a brief consultation, where I chatted with Mako about the type of cut I was going for and showed her a few pictures. She then shampooed my hair and incorporated a mini head massage as well which felt amazing. I also love how they put a little plastic guard on your face to protect your eyes from getting splashed with any shampoo or water. Throughout the cutting process she would check in to make sure she wasn't cutting off too much hair, or ask if I wanted pieces to be shorter. I appreciated all the check-ins throughout the process to make sure it was what I wanted. At the end, she asked if I wanted a straight or curly blowout, and I went for the curls, which turned out great! All in with tip, I ended up spending $85 which while not the cheapest, isn't bad considering I only cut my hair once or twice a year. I'd definitely come back here! P.S. One complaint: I do wish the salon was open later during the week, their latest appointment is at 5pm since the salon closes at 6pm, which is tough if you want to come for a haircut in the evening after work. read more
