Service was Friendly, helpful and patient. Dine in happy hour weekday 4pm till 9pm, weekend 11am-9pm Appetizers: Fried calamari - Good but batter was a little to crispy Agedashi Tofu - Yummy lightly crispy outside and soft inside Chicken Wings - good, crispy and delicious Sashimi: Escolar - so good Peppered Tuna - nice size pieces Salmon - also good Roll: Minnesota - loaded with flavor Small dining room and casual family atmosphere. Shared parking lot. If you are near Reliant Stadium, you should take advantage of the happy hour menu.

Came here on a Friday evening to enjoy some end of the work week sushi dinner. It is a very unassuming spot in a strip mall with ample parking. Upon entering, we were warmly greeted and quickly sat at a table. Its a pretty casual spot with cute decorations and seemed spacious, granted there weren't many people dining in. They have evening happy hour during the weekday that extends to 9PM as well as all day on the weekends which seems pretty nice! We ordered a couple things from the happy hour menu as well as rolls off the main menu. We got fried flounder and salmon sashimi as happy hour specials. Both were good, panko breaded flounder that was very crisp, albeit not a lot of fish but the salmon was nice and thickly sliced and very buttery. The rolls were good but nothing was a major standout. I did like the volcano roll (its not the same as the one I have been chasing) but we did find some foil underneath it as it was a baked roll. My partner was concerned he ate a piece as he felt something in his throat. Overall, this was a nice little spot for sushi, nice service, cute ambiance. Prices were, to me, a bit high for what you get and the foil in the roll really knocked a star off.

Asahi is located near NRG Stadium in a small plaza. It has good service, a nice happy hour 4-9pm weekdays), and lots of specialty rolls on the menu. The volcano roll was a winner and they had oddly good jasmine green tea that didn't seem like something out of a tea bag. I was a bit disappointed in the unagi (eel) roll. It was pretty small for $11 and lacked flavor. The New York roll was kind of a mid tier roll - better than the unagi but not quite as flavorful as the volcano. We also grabbed their salmon sashimi which was fresh and nicely poI'd come back for happy hour and stick to certain rolls, but there are better overall options.

This place is right across from NRG and located right on. The corner of the plaza. Inside is a little small but there is a good amount of seating. Walked in. Was greeted at the door. Then sat pretty quickly. The sushi is good but to me it seemed pretty similar to what I would get in a grocery store. I only had sushi rolls so can't say much for the rest. I would come back if I wanted some sushi and was in the area. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here. Update I did go back and place a to go order. Each roll only has 5x. Still feeling pretty much the same on flavor but service was better.

Y'all. This place is so good! I'm shocked. We were looking for cheap last minute sushi nearby and I am impressed. Definitely in our rotation now. Happy hour literally every day from weekdays from 4-9pm (close) and weekends 11am-9pm (close). That's literally all day! Don't even get me started on the prices. So it's good, it's cheap, and it's fast! We ordered the fried calamari and vegetable tempura! Yes! So good. Lightly fried and well seasoned! Beautiful. Dipping sauces were good too. We ordered the houston roll, Poseidon roll, spicy tuna, spicy yellowtail, spider and Philadelphia. All of the rolls were very fresh and tasty. We scarfed it down. Also the lychee sake was good as well. Service was phenomenal! I feel like service has been lacking nationwide but not here. We got in at 7:45pm dined, paid, and left at 8:12pm. Amazing.

This is honestly the best sushi restaurant in town. Sushi is SO fresh, portions are generous, service is excellent and I feel like Norm in Cheers. They acknowledge regulars. They're wonderful.

the food was kinda bland from here also was on the more pricy side considering the portion size.

Randomly popped in for an impromptu lunch with a friend. The shaggy dog was delicious, and I had a fun Japanese soda. My friend wasn't fond of her spicy tuna roll though, but loved her salad. There's plenty seating and parking, and our server was very attentive. I'm hoping this isn't constant, but initially when I walked in there was a strong scent. If this bothers you, I suggest ordering to go.

Located near the NRG stadium. Nice little spot on the strip of other stores. Inside is small but spacious, feels very intimate. Workers were very nice, but I feel as if they try to rush me to order ( wasn't even that busy) food was reasonable price for the serving sizes. Tastes okay. Not the best, not the worst I had.

1st time at this restaurant and it's very close to medical center. Food was good and service was Ok. Price is cheap so of course the quality is not that great. I got the sushi and sashimi combo and I found that the sashimi quality is not great. Presentation wise could be better too.

The broth was delicious and the homemade hot sauce came on the side had a wonderful taste (and blistering heat - a little goes a long way. The thin sliced meat was not to my taste, but that is purely personal preference - I could tell it was a good product, just not my thing. I thought the noodles had a firmer, more al dente texture that was new to me, but I expect that was my lack of prior experience. The "Japanese BBQ" was an experience. It took a bit to get the hang of it. The food was all very fresh and beautifully served, and the dipping sauces were tasty. In hindsight, I would probably have enjoyed the all you can eat sushi more, but I am happy I tried it. The restaurant has a laid back feel. Simple decor of umbrellas and lanterns. There is no sense of being rushed. My only suggestion would be to have some tables without the gas hibachi setup as that limits leg room (playing footsie is right out). I've returned twice. I highly recommend it.

Situated directly across the street from NRG Stadium along Kirby, it's ideally placed to capture the slice of tourists and locals. Considering the wide selection of Japanese-inspired fare, the potential is there -- but unfortunately, the food is both overpriced and mediocre, much like their predecessor (#2). Things I appreciated: * Interior: I am fairly confident that one could show up with 20 people from a football game across the street and find a seat. There's enough seating in here to house an army and they've done a good job with the ambiance to keep the appearance of a faux-premium vibe. * Service: While they were generally slow on a few things, most of the staff members I've encountered were super pleasant and very transparent about what / what not to order. I appreciated this immensely. * Yakitori: No exaggeration, this is one of the better AYCE yakitori experiences I've had. The chicken and beef yakitori combos (#3) had great presentation, were juicy, and full of flavor. This was the only item where I wanted multiple orders. Things that are not great: * The price: This. My first time coming here it was $31 (Or ... $30.99), but the last time was $50. With that kind of a steep hike, you'd think they'd offer uni, toro, and some kind of premium yakitori, but too hard to justify considering their lineup of food and drink. * The name: Previously, it was simply "Taro Japanese Restaurant." As of earlier this year, it has become "Taro VIP BBQ SEAFOOD HOTPOT & BAR." * The drinks: I'm stoked they have an alcohol license and can serve wine, beer, and cocktails. But the cocktails are on another level bad. The Mexican Mule ($14.50) was too tinge too sour, the Taro Red ($14.50), Blue Hawaii ($13.50) and Tokyo Rose ($13.50) are way too sweet. Even the powdered milk teas and fruit teas felt very generic. * The sushi: I can handle low quality sushi, but there was some level of funk for almost all the salmon, tuna, and yellowtail that I ordered. It was masked a bit better in the rolls, but at some point, I couldn't order anymore. * The ramen: While I think offering any kind of ramen is a plus in the AYCE scenario, the ramen here is understandably mid. All of the tonkotsu choices are the best bet, but this is a hard pass for even folks that love noodle soup. * The spelling: While I'm typically forgiving of most menu mishaps, the fact one is being charged $50 and they can't seem to spell shoyu, fried, tartare, etc. correctly is kind of mind blowing. * Most of their baked sushi items: This includes their tataki, baby octopus, mussels, ankimo, and tartare. This is likely due to the seafood quality issue that I had alluded to earlier. * The crawfish: Skip. Don't bother ordering, even if it's peak crawifsh season since it tastes like something more from a Chinese buffet than anything resembling the kinds of crawdads from Louisiana. For a place that boasts being run by culinary graduates trained under a famous Japanese chef (#5), it's incredibly disappointing to such such variety paired with such flawed execution. One could argue Taro is more style than substance, but I hope they find a way to correct their course. ____________ (#1) All you can eat Japanese restaurant where everyone speaks Mandarin. (#2) Akashi: https://www.yelp.com/biz/akashi-houston-7 (#3) Calling all carnivores: This is your moment. (#4) "Shyoyu" "Fired" "Tartar" (#5) Takeshi Kaneko? Okay then.

The pepper tuna tataki and hamachili were fresh and flavorful. The karaage was crispy, tender and juicy, and the agedashi tofu had that perfect texture in a savory broth. All were sooo good. The Zen Mega Dragon roll, hamachi hamachi roll, and Extra Picante roll were all fresh and excellent. The only two dishes that didn't quite wow us were the hijiki and the Rock N Roll roll. Both were a bit basic compared to everything else on the table. The yakisoba noodles did take a little while to come out, but wow... they were soooo worth the wait. Savory, hot, and incredibly satisfying. Prices are very reasonable for the quality and portion sizes, which makes it even better. There is free parking, but the lot is small.
