Very yummy spot!! I've been here two times and it's a pretty good spot if you want some sushi or Japanese food in the area! Service was good. The staff are welcoming and helpful. It's pretty small inside, but I notice a lot of people order to-go rather than sit and eat inside.

    Spicy Tonkotsu Ramen

I think there's definitely room for improvement. Walked in on a Tuesday and it was empty, got the spicy tonkotsu and a roll of sushi. I had seen online they had a happy hour menu but asked and they said no happy hour. Service was ok, basically the bare minimum, drinks, order, payout. We weren't given a dish for soy sauce or napkins. The ramen was great no complaints and the sushi was okay. Definitely a spot you have to try yourself to get a feel of.

Japanese cuisine is a hard sell in the Braeswood / West U area, so I understand the immediate appeal of a place like Yoshi. Places like this are a lot more common than your average omakase, so I realize the comparison isn't warranted. The service has always been lukewarm and the prices are a little much, considering the food is very subpar (#1) at best. The pandemic wasn't kind to any business and life at Yoshi was no exception. They took extra precautions and made the place exclusively takeout for awhile; going as far as sealing out the front so that no one could get past the door and with an artificial paper wall for transactions and waiting. I want to assume that things have gone back to normal, but I've still only called in for pickup. As previously noted, the food is mediocre. I found the sushi to be overpriced for what it is and I have to assume the affluent neighborhood + the lack of any serious competition has to contribute to this. This is not destination sushi. It's takeout sushi with a slightly higher price tag. I've never walked away without spending at least $100 on everything, which is usually good enough for several rolls and a few nigiri pieces a la carte. The rolls were underwhelming and this also applies to their array of special rolls, including the cowboy roll. I am not fond of how skinny / small the nigiri pieces are cut, but to each his/her own. I am also not a fan of the ramen, which is probably worse than the sushi. The broth is a near salt bomb and I've been less enthused to experiment with their menu as I would with other places. Sharing the same parking lot as Whole Foods, I'm willing to bet the latter has better options for sushi. The staff here seems somewhat apathetic and unmotivated to do better. They're bilingual in both Mandarin and English and they take credit card. ___________ (#1) AYCE sushi quality but a little sadder.

    Partially eaten chirashi

We ordered delivery and saw this place had good reviews. We got the Chirashi bowl and Shashimi combo and were unimpressed. The fish was fairly bland and the (what we were assuming to be) tuna was leaking red like it was dyed to make it seem higher quality (it didn't taste or feel high quality either). Overall not worth the price even with the coupon I had through a delivery app. The driver also seemed to have needed to wait a while for it.

Good shopping strip sushi house with very reasonable prices even outside of happy hour. The ramens and signature rolls are around $10-15 each. Their nigiri pieces range from $5.50 - 9.50 (for 2). About the only bad thing is that there's not much space for dine-in much less for a large group. They seems to do a lot of business through delivery app. My vegetable ramen was good, and the broth was not too salty. I read some complaints that it was undersalted but it's better when you can reach for the salt or soy sauce than too much. I saw that the Texas roll was beautifully crafted although smaller and tasted fresh even on a Sunday.

The service was fast very delicious! I would definitely come back. It is a smaller restaurant but its nice for a quiet lunch.

Small place with very delicious Ramen! We also ordered 2 sushi rolls. One is called the dragon roll (very yummy) and the other one the pink lady. My favorite was the Pink lady that is one you have to try for sure! I have nothing but positive things to say about this place. The sashimi was fresh and so delectable, their shrimp tempura was so crispy and yummy! Their service was great! They are very polite and they keep their place clean. Definitely coming back!

Cute and quaint restaurant with limited seating. I ordered the tonkotsu ramen and tried the rainbow and eel rol. The ramen was surprisingly not overly salty and the portion size was large. All that for only $11.50. Service was good, food was good, and the inside was clean. I will be coming back for sure!

    lunch special teriyaki chicken

We came in on Sunday lunch. It's a quiet place with not a lot of seating. The waitresses were very nice to us and got us water quickly! We had a large group of friends come in and they did a good job of being accommodating. They pushed tables together and offered to split all the checks. I got the chicken teriyaki lunch special for $11. It was plenty of food for a lunch. It also came with miso soup that wasn't overly salted and had tofu and seaweed.

Yoshi is one of Houston's nearly infinite strip mall sushi joints and weighs in on the more affordable side of the spectrum. I've now experienced the place both in person and via takeout and some common themes emerged. First off, it is a quaint space with a neighborhood feel: just a few tables, a small kitchen, and a TV in the corner. The service is super friendly and attentive. Regarding the menu, the miso soup was great - not too salty and furnished with generous amounts of tofu and seaweed. In general, the rolls were a bit faultily constructed and broke apart rather easily under their own weight. We were not fans of the Lake Jackson Roll (snow crab and avocado inside, topped with hamachi, jalapeno, and green onion) because the crab tasted like soggy tuna - perhaps the mayo was too watery? The Pink Lady Roll (tuna, salmon, white fish, avocado, and shrimp in soy paper) also didn't really come together for us in terms of flavor. In fact, the spicy mayo underneath was the best part. The nigiri and sashimi were a mixed bag. The nigiri came with long slices of fish that were thin in the other two dimensions. Some of the fish had a strange plastic-like texture and actually tasted defrosted. The 14-piece sashimi platter is an excellent deal as the fish were largely cut into thick, juicy slabs. The white tuna, hamachi, and salmon were fantastic and the clear stand outs. The pepper tuna was also decent. I would stick to these if possible. The rest of the varieties of fish were straight up unenjoyable. The tuna had a bitter aftertaste and did not feel fresh. The red snapper was overly chewy and mild. The other cubes of pink fish on our platter tasted like water, which is to say like nothing. Overall, the offerings at Yoshi are pretty decent for the price and the quantity is reasonable, but the fish is extremely inconsistent in terms of quality. It's a decent bet for cheap takeout, but I don't think I will be adding it to my regular rotation.

I visited here on Tuesday, October 18th, 2022 at 120pm. Yoshi was empty. It seemed that they were done with busy lunchtime. I ordered a sushi lunch with miso soup. The Miso soup was okay. Regarding sushi, to my surprise, it was excellent. I wanna write improvements. The chef constantly touched his mobile phone before cooking. I was not sure if he washed his hands. there were a lot of germs on the cell phone. Hope he washed his hands. When the chef or server uses the phone, please hide and use it. Overall, it was a small mom-and-pop restaurant, but i gave 5 stars.

I had a great experience at ramen Tatsu-ya. It was my first time here & I was very impressed…read more I ordered the "mi-so-hot" & it was amazing. First - the ramen came out super fast. I was very surprised. And my broth was so delicious. It had such a rich umami flavor due to the miso & I thought the spice level was perfect. Honestly - I could eat jhst that broth for a whole meal. Unlike buldak or some other spicy ramens - the main selling point wasn't the spice. You could get an additional "spice bomb" if you wanted some more heat. The ramen toppings were good but not outstanding - same with the noodles. I thought the "mi-so-hot" was easily 3x better than "the og". The broth in "the og" was pretty interesting and more unique tasting. It felt like the main notes were just umami, pork, and oil. Not bad, but felt like it was missing a little something to make it truly good. If I had just got the OG, I'd rate this place a bit lower - but as it stands I'd 100% come back here for the "mi-so-hot" The interior was pretty nice. It was more "communal style seating" with a couple of big tables. There is also some smaller booths. It's an "order at the counter" type restaurant as well. I saw several comments about parking & was a bit concerned when driving over. I know that part of westheimer is always packed! But there is an attached parking lot & at 3pm on a Sunday, there was plenty of parking! Also - there is some street parking in the neighborhood north of the shop. Overall - will 100% be coming back for some more spicy ramen. Would recommend

The sweet aftertaste was definitely worthwhile. - Shrimp - Not as fresh as I would have liked, as someone who's eaten a lot of shrimp, but I still liked the taste. Still, pretty mediocre. Tantan Tsukemen - Very interesting broth. Potent, salty, and full of bold flavor. My friend swapped the pork for chicken, and the chicken worked really well with the broth. They serve the chicken as a cold cut. This is a double-noodle dish with a soy milk-based dipping sauce. I normally would have ordered this because I LOVE tantan ramen, but I had to forgo it for the limited-time Creamy Truffle Ramen. Creamy Truffle Ramen - LOVED the broth. It was very light and creamy. I actually liked this a lot more than tonkotsu ramen. The truffle wasn't too overwhelming--just mild enough to hint at its flavor without becoming the only flavor profile you get. Truffle is like baking with rose water; finding that balance is quite hard. I will admit the whole table smelled like truffles, though. The torched king oyster mushroom paired wonderfully with the dish, and the broccolini was an equally interesting topping choice. I also found bits of melted Parmesan throughout the ramen, which the menu listed as an ingredient. The egg wasn't the best I've ever had, but it was still a decent soy egg. As I kept eating, the truffle oil became more intense, and the fattiness started to get a bit overwhelming without washing it down with water. Great flavor overall, but I think this dish is best paired with an appetizer to help cut through the richness. One of my favorite things about this place, which my BF mentioned, was the noodle texture. I noticed it too as I ate--a good bite with a slick texture that was just starchy enough to cling to the broth. We had leftover noodles from the Tantan Tsukemen at the end of the meal and ended up using the Creamy Truffle broth as a dipping sauce. Honestly, no regrets. The cold noodles didn't work quite as well in this dish, but the broth was definitely a banger. This was also the first ramen broth I couldn't finish but desperately wanted to bring home. (Obviously, I did.) Their to-go containers are surprisingly sleek, too. It's a weird thing to compliment, but I almost wanted to keep the container as much as the broth. Special comment on the utensils here--the soup spoons are ridiculously cute! Would love to have a similar set at home. Overall, the atmosphere was pleasant, and the service was thoughtful. The music wasn't too loud, and it wasn't that crowded for a Saturday night. They do play a lot of popular Japanese songs, so if you're an international music enthusiast, you'll appreciate hearing "Mayonaka no Door" by Miki Matsubara.

One waitress served everyone in the restaurant while I was there. She was speedy in taking and delivering orders. She seemed very nice! Food: ordered Tonkotsu Gachi and my mom ordered the yuzu. Food arrived very quickly, though we ordered no appetizers. The tonkotsu broth was rich and velvety in texture, but more like a mild umami in flavor. The chashu pork was pale, but melt in your mouth buttery and bursting with savory pork goodness! The marinated egg wasn't brought up to temperature with the broth -- a little cooler than room temperature, with a medium oozy yolk. It felt like the marinade penetrated all through to the yolk -- it was great! I welcomed the novel choice to use red onion over the usual scallions. It was a nice touch of color and brought in that bright, juicy onion flavor that I crave. Noodles were perfect texture. Not too hard or mushy. This bowl feels made to focus on the broth and flavor and not so much an instagram post. Delicious!! My only complaint was a very very very slight bitterness in the background. I couldn't pin where it was coming from. Maybe that's a risk of simmering bones for so long. I'll keep this short because I couldn't just eat my moms bowl...
