We went with edamame, chicken wings, shrimp tempura, and 2 orders of sashimi (yellowtail and octopus). I went with a sapporo, which I enjoyed. Worth a try if you are looking for a low-key sushi establishment in the South Main area. Their happy "hour" runs for a good portion of every evening and largely consists of a wide variety of tempura goods for $3.50. They make great appetizers at a low price point. The regular menu is actually quite extensive. Some reviews weren't keen on their ramen broth but we had their udon noodles and the broth was fairly flavorful. We got a little excited and ordered too many special tempura rolls. So our meal ended up being on the heavy side. But that was our own fault. The reason the rating went down is because of the quality of the fish. I've been coming here for years and at the beginning, it was really good. The happy hour is still great.. Price is super cheap.. Very nice place. The staff is wonderful and the food is very good. I can't give it a 5 star sushi restaurant rating for two reasons. 1. Is it feels a little dirty, not much, but it doesn't exude cleanliness. 2. The sushi could be better. Falls apart at times, some of the fish feels like it make not have been thawed gently. I would say this place is pretty average, it didn't blow my mind but it wasn't bad. Ordering Takeout: I ordered takeout from here during COVID on a Wednesday night. The process to order was very easy. We ordered online, and the order was ready ASAP (which means 20 minutes). The website was actually very confusing because they put the pickup time as ASAP, but no where on the website did it say how long from when you ordered ASAP meant. So I had to call the restaurant and ask. So that was the only hiccup in the ordering process. Food: We ordered the Nemo roll, Asahi roll, Houston Roll, Poseidon Roll, and Julie Crunch Roll. The Poseidon roll was my least favorite of all of them. There was just one flavor that caused it to taste a little off. I would say the best roll was the Houston roll. It was very good. Just a bunch of fresh fish wrapped in rice and seaweed. It was so simple yet delicious. But a downside is that they didn't provide wasabi or ginger with the sushi. :(( We also ordered calamari which is a must try!! The calamari travelled surprisingly well, it was still super crunchy once I got home. Service: The service was great! They actually forgot an item with the order and they called me while I was driving back so I was able to turn around and get my missing item. Although they did make a mistake, they handled it very well. **One last thing to note** They use STYROFOAM for their takeout!! Overall, I am not sure if I will return. Once again the loving wife and I found ourselves wanting to grab a quick bite after a long day of work. So of course, we just hopped, skipped, and jumped to Asahi...OK well we drove, but it was a pretty short drive... Immediately we order the usual $4 sake, the calamari, pot stickers, and stuffed jalapenos (pro-tip...get some unagi sauce to drizzle on these...you're welcome), salmon and albacore tuna sashimi (proer-tip...ask the chefs to put a little extra garlic crunch and sesame oil on these...you're welcomer). They are open for dine in and to go. We went on a Saturday night for happy hour. We were the only ones there at first. Our waitress was very sweet. Our orders came out piping hot. We had stuffed jalapeños, crab Rangoon, chicken bites, veggie tempura, rock n roll roll, Kansas roll and 3 beers for under $40. I am stuffed! I enjoyed everything. I had a very warm feeling on a freezing day when I first visited during the annual auto show in January. I went back again recently with a strong crave for some comfort food - ramen. Ordered the sake don to go and it was delicious! The pieces of salmon were fatty and flavorful and laid over a bed of sushi rice. I really liked the seaweed salad that came with it. The meal also comes with a salad and miso soup. The miso soup was delicious, and the salad dressing was also great. However, the salad itself was okay (just pieces of lettuce). So the sushi here is amazing!! I originally wanted to give them 4 stars because I had to wait 30 minutes past the time they had promised my food to be ready. However, I did order to go because I was headed to a concert across the street at NRG Stadium and they were too packed. So, I took a menu and called in my order from my car. They said that my order would be ready in 15 minutes; it wasn't ready for 45 minutes. The reason I gave them 5 stars is because the sushi was off the hook AMAZING! A great place to grab lunch or hang out for happy hour. Located across the NRG stadium before you hit OST off Kirby. Has online ordering. The lunch combo F is a good option for only $9.95. You can choose from a selected 2 rolls and miso soup or salad. I always get the Houston roll (fresh fish) and Julie crunch roll. For happy hour there's $2 beers (sapporo, asahi, kirin, etc) $3 apps and $6 sashimi. The gyoza are hot and crisp on the bottom. Can't go wrong with edamame and shrimp and vegetable tempura. Coming here Saturday around 4-5ish. Walked in and it was packed. The place is smaller than expected. We were seated about 10-15 mins from arrival. Was seated at a table where the waiter just wiped it and was still wet.... and it smelled like wet stinky cloth odor. Nigiri: smoked salmon, super white tuna, scallop, and sea bass. Im going to review the nigiri first. Smoked salmon was better than the rest. I got the nice warm smokey salmon taste, but it doesn't melt in your mouth though..... scallop wasn't so bad but I'm getting the hint that it wasn't as fresh because its very different from the scallops i had elsewhere and color was a bit dull. Super white tuna was nasty though... does not taste fresh I don't know why the sea bass didnt come out together but we got it late as hell.... And let me tell you... nasty!!! it was still half frozen..... i didnt even finish the other half of the fish..... disappointing.... Man for the quality and taste of these nigiri.... man huge thumbs down..... I didnt even taste the rolls my wife got,except the shaggy roll which was pretty good. The other ones were terrible according to her AND we never got our miso soup..... that should be the first thing that comes out... I arrived to the restaurant about 5 minutes before they said my food would be ready and it was already out (which I appreciated until I got home a couple minute and the food did not taste very fresh). We got a couple different sushi rolls along with gyoza rolls and teriyaki. The sushi wasn't good and the gyoza dumplings were decent but nothing special. The prices were quite high and the sushi was mediocre at best. I was able to get 2 lunch portion sushi rolls (Houston Roll + Julie Crunch Roll) with a house salad for only $10! Such a good deal! The restaurant was steadily busy during lunch hours, but the table turnover seemed quick. The sushi here is very average tasting and nothing too special. It's no where near bad, but the sushi didn't leave a lasting impression. Asahi Sushi would not be my initial go-to for a sushi craving, but more for a convenient and decent lunch option. Over the past few months I've been coming here at least biweekly, sometimes weekly to pick up takeout. The owner and chef are so nice. They are a solid choice for sushi in the neighborhood. Everyone wears masks and from what I've seen from dine in, they are using disposable utensils and plates. Ever since I started living and working in West University I have been coming to this place for lunch/dinner. I have been back so many times and will continue to come here! Although we've been back so many times, we tend to order the same things over and over again. 1) Salmon sashimi 2) Pepper tuna sashimi 3) Fried calamari 4) Mushroom soup 5) Sky Diver Roll Those are our stables, they are soo affordable even outside of happy hour, but Asahi has great happy hours so we rarely miss, almost every time we come in it's happy hour! Aside from our stables, we have tried several other rolls and dishes and nothing has disappointed us so far. There's a newer fancier sushi restaurant on the other side of the shopping center, but it's just eye-candy and I never really feel as cozy as when I eat at Asahi. You can get 3$ sake and 5$ wine. 1. Fried calamari- this was really good. Calamari was crispy and well battered. The dipping sauce was sweet and savory. Definitely recommend 2. Stuffed jalepenos- this was ok. I was not a fan of the artificial crab used as stuffing 3. Stuffed mushrooms- probably my least favorite thing. Just didn't hit the spot 4. Fried chicken- skin was a little underdone but the sauce was really good (sweet and savory variety) it also came to 3$ which is like a dollar a buck 5. Asahi sushi has to very easily be our go to spot for sushi in Houston. They are very conveniently located right next to NRG. First time my wife and I came here, we fell in love with the ambiance immediately. It's a smaller space, so if you have a fear of eating next to strangers that are almost an arms length away from you, might not be for you. But for me, the small space allows for a very familiar and friends-amongst-strangers vibe. The sushi always tastes great and my wallet is always thankful by the time we leave, and we order more than just one entree each. Happy hour almost all the time. A wide variety of fish and rolls to choose from. Wait staff could not be any friendlier. We lost our old sushi spot (RIP Sushi Rock) years ago, but we were very fortunate to live near Asahi. Thus, began our obsession. The sushi is delicious, and the service is laid back. The staff and chefs are super nice, too. We eat here at least once a month since it's our got to sushi spot, and it is always delicious. We take the kids (2 and 5 yr old), and it's just fast enough that boredom doesn't set in before it's time to go. It is usually quiet, and we've never seen it busy.
