I previously wrote a negative review about billing (years ago). Today I'm writing to say I got excellent care recently. First for a scheduled aneurysm flow diverter placement by Dr. Kreitel with one night in neuro ICU. Two months later for a brain bleed from a skiing accident when I stayed overnight in neuro ICU again. Excellent care again by ER staff and neuro ICU nurses. Two days later I stayed another night for a suspected brain rebleed... I don't know how ER staff handles the chaos. Nearby a man threatened 3 security guards & a nurse. They took care of it and In think maybe he was arrested, not sure. Anyway I share this because I was originally taken by ambulance to Bronson where they removed my C Collar, plopped me in a wheelchair where I couldn't hold my head up...and it turns out I sat there ignored with a subarachnoid hemorrhage...That was after I told them my helmet was cracked in 1/2, I was on blood thinners and needed a stat CT to rule out a bleed cuz I had brain surgery 2 months prior... Bronson ignored me so I had my son come get me, called Borgess neurosurgery who ordered a brain CT, then admitted to Borgess. At this point, I'm team Borgess all the way. read more

I have been seeing Dr. Barnas for 15 years. He is my second breast cancer surgeon. I feel that I am in great hands and am getting the best care! In 2007, my mammogram was perfectly clear. 2008, I had a tumor the size of a jumbo egg--Stage II! Had lymph nodes removed, tumor removed, 6 chemotherapy treatments, and 33 radiation treatments because I had triple Negative Breast Cancer which is a fancy term for we have no clue what caused it! Now that Borgess is Beacon they are ripping people off. They make patients suffer through unnecessary observation periods so they can bill for it, instead of getting right to business helping people. Then they make you wait an inordinate amount of time to discharge in order to bill you for another day. Beacon is a prime example of how the health care industry is broken. read more

They charged me money that I didn't owe because I have two insurance and so they kept my money. I had to wait over a year for one credit but they still owed me money. They allow every depa to take insurance but don't know how to not charge patients that have two insurances such as a regular employer Blue Cross Blue Shield and Medicare Advantag. it took me over a year and I had to keep calling because their foreign customer service number for billing didn't take care of the issue. Spent better part of day in ER. Staff was professional, caring, respectful, answered all our questions, treated us like human beings! Something often lacking in today's world! Several RN's including Paige and sorry cannot remember other names, IV RN, lab draw RN and several MD's... can only remember Dr Fitzpatrick ... attended to my husband, resolved his issues and did so in timely (for a busy ER) way. quite a wait to get DC instructions but it's a very busy ER. When husband needed some help another RN not assigned to him came immediately to assist. I'd call that great teamwork. If my husband heals without infection (no abx rx given) this will be an easy 5 star rating. Fingers crossed. read more

Nursing staff is neglectful and dismissive. I have a family member there for cancer, he is too weak to care for himself, and has been there for almost a month. He has not been bathed or shaved. His fingernails have grown to be very long. He was lying on his heart monitor under his shoulder long enough to cause a bruise. When we went to the nurses desk to ask for ice cream for him, they dismissed us. This is the only thing he had eaten in days, and I felt that if he wanted more, he should have it since he is not on any diet restrictions. He is left to lay in the bed without being moved all day. I did give him a pillow to help with comfort, but he had been needing one for days. Horrible care. The hospital itself is dirty. Maybe not all from not being cleaned, but from old age. I fully expected to see bugs (though I didn't). I would not bring any loved one here for anything. read more

I have called Acenssion Borgess several times because they did not use my BCNetwork Medicare Advantage card I gave the for an Emergency Room visit. When I got to the Emergency Room I gave them my primary insurance Blue Care Network and then Blue Care Network Medicare Advantage card. I have two insurance and they didn't use my secondary insurance through BCN. Therefore they overcharged me. I called once and gave them my insurance card(s) and today I had to call again. Why can't they do what I asked? Now I have to wait another 45 days to see what Medicare paid to get money back when I already did that! Super frustrating. I thought I'd give them my business instead of going to Bronson but they don't know what they are doing with billing and use a billing customer service out of the country and don't know what they are doing! Next time I'll go to Bronson because this has been a total hassle and waste of my time! read more

My daughter was taken to Ascension for a mental health crisis. She was treated with respect and kindness. I spent the night with her and the nurses did everything in their power to make me comfortable. The "sitter" who helps keep patients safe took her time to make sure we were both comfortable. The tech who took care of her was so kind and all the staff made sure to see my daughter as a unique young woman. The only negative was one of the security guards who escorted us to her inpatient room was rude and unhelpful. We were shocked at his attitude. His attitude made this difficult situation worse. What should have been a calm transition became an upsetting and unnerving series of confused good-byes and borderline aggressive non answers to our questions. He did nothing to help a stressful situation. To end on a positive, the techs who moved my daughter were polite and helpful. read more

I guess I should have run screaming for the hills (if I could have even stood) when the first person I encountered told me to SIT in the recliner because that was all they had and I should "deal with it"!! my father passed away on friday may 30th at borgess it is now tuesday june 3rd borgess finally released him to the funeral home apparently they forgot about him because there was a "hold" from some donation for his organs even tho he wasnt an organ donor and i never concented to anyone that he would be giving any of his organs. very disappointed with that sort of care they neglected with my father. also was promised a sound of heart beat from an ekg that they did earlier from an NP and the chaplain at the hospital but when i told another NP they looked at me like a deer in headlights and just gave me a print out of his ekg and told me that was all that they could give me. read more

December of 2022 I injured my shoulder. I was referred to Dr. Hardin who was absolutely excellent. He was so patient and kind when I wanted to try to avoid surgery. When steroid injections and PT didn't do it justice, he referred me to Dr. Veenstra who was an amazing surgeon. Surgery was done this past month and everything went great! Between Borgess Orthopedics and Borgess Hospital, I received exceptional care. The support staff at both the hospital and office are always friendly and helpful. Both are well kept and clean as well! Ascension Borgess will now be my go to for primary care and any specialist visits! read more

My family member was recently admitted to Borgess following an NSTEMI. Initially they were started quickly on heparin and was planned for a CTA to assess for any blockages in the heart. As of writing this review we have been waiting over 24 hours for the results of the CTA with no answers. Absolutely ridiculous, I am never taking another family member to this hospital. I hope that when the CTA finally gets resulted there's no blocks and she's able to go home and her outcome was not affected by the atrocious delay in care. The nursing staff and cardiologist have been more than adequate in her care, however it's not enough to make up for over 24 hours of waiting on a CTA to be read to determine if she'll need a cardiac cath. As a healthcare professional myself, extremely disappointed with how everything has unfolded at this facility. read more

The Clown Car of Hospitals We never use Borgess Hospital, but my mother prefers it. Her husband and one of her sons once worked there. So she was admitted several weeks ago because of intestinal bloating. It turned out to be a tumor in her large intestine that was nearly completely blocking everything. Because at 90 years old, she is declining the tumor's removal or chemotherapy (and there is a reasonable argument to be made she would not survive either), the hospital decided to insert a stent to create some space. We had been told previously that the procedure would be at 10 am so we should be there at 9:30 or before to see her off. We were there before 9:30 but she was already gone. Her open purse was sitting on the bedside table with her ID, insurance cards, glasses, and iPhone inside. Neither locked up nor secured, her purse was there for the taking. At 11:20 a doctor named Sawyer walked in and exclaimed, "She isn't here?" Identifying himself as one of the surgeons, he exclaimed as he turned to leave "I'll be back to let you know how she is." He never returned. At 12:20 a Nursing Supervisor walked into the room and said to me, "Oh, I must have caught you getting dressed. You must be ready to head home." I said she was mistaken and that I was instead a son of a patient. We asked her to discover what had happened to my mother and whether there had been any progress. "I must have confused you with someone who had this room before your mother. You look like him," she said. Ten minutes later she reappeared, stating that the procedure had finished just "4 minutes ago." But what had happened and why the delay she knew nothing, but reassured us there'd been no fiasco. The hospital didn't lose my mother in an elevator shaft and she emerged from the procedure alive, so I guess I am grateful. But if it was solely up to me, and it's not (for now), I'd take her to the competitor across town or, better yet, to the hospital in Ann Arbor where the real pros practice. read more

The care here has went down tremendously, the charge nurse on 4North was rude and unprofessional and hung up in my face then the operator transferred me back several time and she didn't answer the phone. She did finally answer but she again hung up in my face once I said hello.I got transfer to the house supervisor Chris, who was little to no help as well, and pretty much told me it's nothing he can do about it because they don't have an incident department anymore. He was rude and unprofessional as well and attempted to try to turn this incident around on me when I'm trying to call to make a report. Do not come to Ascension/ Borgess!!!! Go to Bronson please! The one person that was actually very professional and caring was the operate I think her name was Laura. But the rest of the staff......needs to be revised! read more

Bush league levels of care unless you have a heart or spine specialist here. Their main focus is getting you in/out ASAP with as little effort as possible. Many traveling nurses work here that have little connection or care of the hospital, people, or the local area. Bad experiences personally as well as numerous other friends and family. If you go into the emergency room chances are you'll end up in the hallway. Terrible hospital. read more

our Dr retired, recommended Dr.Perez at Westside. This morning, I was on hold for 25 minutes before I gave up. I have 2 meds I need scipts oked by Dr. Perez Express scrips faxed the forms to Westside, they were not done, this morning made the request to westside by their automated phone system. They say go to my patient portal for script renews, which I did but Dr Perez is not listed so it would not work. I take warfarin and do my INR twice a month, I listed Dr Perez as my new Dr, the forms were faxed to westside just after Nov. 1. The forms have not been returned, Roche is on me to get the Dr to return the forms but impossible to speak to anyone at Westside. This scares me, we have a Dr that we have not seen and no way to even speak to the office. What do we do? Not sure that Westside is a good choice for a DR. not sure that Borgess is a good choice either read more

I was in This hospital for a small bowel blockage in April 2020. I have had many of these and have gone here for all of them but this was the LAST TIME. Two things: I was more sick this time than I've ever been. I was on the surgical floor and isolated from COVID-related patients. Half the floor was empty because they weren't doing anything but emergency surgeries. However, I was rushed out of the hospital even though I'd been throwing up violently the night before. Usually, you're started with clear liquids and if you tolerate them you're given full liquids then when you tolerate them you move to regular food. It usually takes at least 12-18 hours per level to see if you're ok with what you're eating. They did it all in a day and sent me home. The second problem was cleanliness. Ascension has a contracted company coming in to clean. No one touched my room until my third day when I complained to a nurse and she called. Then when the person came to clean, it was half a job. I had to move the waste can and it was BLACK under there. She didn't move the can until i told her to. Then it was still black when she was done. Giving a good look at the entire room (I was too sick to notice at first) it was filthy. I don't know who's idea it was to contract cleaning out, but they should be fired. I will never go back to Ascension. read more

My 84 year old Mother went to the ER due to pain in her side concerned it might be appendicitis, the Dr at the Urgent suggested Borgess. The clinical care at the hospital was good (took 14 hours) but solid care. The care from stafff was dreadful. The restrooms on the ER side were dirty and not in working order, when she had to use the restroom was harrassed by the folks at the desk as to why she needed to go to the restroom elsewhere. Even the Security guard questioned this 84 year old walking with a cane what she was doing away from the ER. When she finally got to the restroom the cleaning attendant was in the restroom using it for 10 minutes. My mom had to go in and use the mens locking the door so she would not have an accident. I'm ashamed the the corporation has let things go so horribly wrong between staff and job performance that the hospital is in this shape. Never to enter the hospital again for care, makes sense why practices are closing and the clincial folks are going to Bronson. read more

Dr. Rachel Polinski was extremely rude, confrontational from the moment she spoke with my husband and myself, and had no empathy for my husband's pain. She didn't ask us if we had questions and when I voiced concerns about my husband she attacked him like he was faking his very real pain. My husband sat here for 5 hours to be told it would be another hour until his CT scan would be read, and we were talked down to when we told them he was still in pain after a toradol shot he was given four hours ago. We will never be coming back. Stay away from here. It has been six hours now and we only just now spoke to a doctor who would listen, and answered questions we had. Got here at 2:30 am and just left after taking his own IV out at 9am. read more

Thank you to all the staff at Borgess for the exemplary care that I was given while hospitalized there for three days. I was on my way to Lansing, Michigan and had an auto accident in Kalamazoo. Everyone treated me well, from the Firemen, State Troopers and ambulance drivers. Once in the emergency room i was stitched up with care and thoroughly examined. Once I got to my room every needed test was administered. From the minister to the social worker, nurses and of course physicians of all specialties; I felt that my case was a priority. No shortcuts were taken and I was discharged with CD's of all results from various CT scans as well as referral notes. God was definitely looking out for me when I was taken to this hospital. Despite the heroic efforts of the overworked nurses and a couple of doctors, this ER was shockingly deficient. After being transferred to their ER from another hospital and being assured there would be a hospital bed for my sister after evaluation and triage, she spent 3 nights in the ER, the first night on a stretcher until an amazing nurse noticed and at least got her a bed within the ER. The last "spot" where she was parked was a hallway. Truly substandard health care, dirty linens, mistakes made due to lack of communication. An ER is not a hospital room. If there are no rooms due to lack of staffing, refer patients to someplace that does have beds. Do the needed triage and then get them out to make room for other trauma patients. Without someone being physically with my sister for those hellish 3 and a half days I don't know what would have happened. Huge kudos to the one doc who finally saw her as a person and got her from the hallway to a hospital room and to a few outstanding nurses. The head trauma surgeon was extremely rude, disrespectful and arrogant. Our health system is in crisis and unfortunately this ER is a perfect example. Go anywhere but here. read more

I was hospitalized in September after going to Urgent Care and they called an ambulance due to respiratory distress. This was the most horrendous experience I've ever had at a hospital. I spent more than 24 hours in the emergency room, no call light, I had been given a diuretic but no access to a bathroom. I was attached to oxygen with a 7 foot cannula, I couldn't just get up and walk to a bathroom. As I stated, no call light so I couldn't call for assistance. One nurse came in, said she would get someone to help me but no one came. The next person that came in said she would get me the number to the nurses station but she also didn't help me. And I never got the number to the nurses station either. When I finally got to a room it wasn't any better. I had a very rude doctor who was probably overworked, the nurse tried but she had so many patients she just flat out didn't have time. The shower was piled full of commodes and shower chairs so I couldn't even take a shower. They gave me a pack of baby wipes instead. read more

The medical issue got resolved, and almost all of the Borgess hospital specialties billed the VA correctly as per normal. Not one of their labs though. Still sending me a personal bill even though they knew the information for billing. Harassing an old military guy because they don't know how to do billing. Disgraceful. First I would like to say that the staff at Ascension has always been great. My issue is with management. I have went to the Rheumatology Dept for 15 years and have always been happy. Yesterday the rheumatology dept called to reschedule my appointment in March, and then told me they had just been informed the facility would close in May and I would need to go elsewhere. Really!? Two months notice to find a new Dr and one that I can get into in a reasonable time frame to continue my treatment and medications. Very disappointing an irresponsible on managements end. They knew this was coming and should have given a minimum of 6 months notice to staff and patients! Apparently profit comes over patient care. read more

I went to ER after fainting after what I think was a fever seizure. For two days I was unable to function with a 106.9 fever.I thought I had a false negative covid test 5 days prior. They refused to test me again. They determined I had pneumonia- gave me antibiotic iv and sent me home. Chest X-ray showed I had abscesses. With a 10 second ultrasound the dr said it was too difficult to get to and she didn't have time to drain it! They were busy and I had to beg for a blanket. I hadn't eaten in days and couldn't even get a cracker. I felt my fever spiking again and I asked for more meds. Instead they brought me a water and said I had to to leave and go to the waiting room because they needed my bed. My ride didn't show for 45 minutes and my fever spiked again to 104 as I curled up in the waiting room chair crying and shaking uncontrollably. They did not prescribe An haler nor prednisone. No follow up calls. Granted they were busy - But felt like I was dying and no one cared. I've done so much for the Er during the covid raising funds and dropping off hundreds of Meals for them showing my support for "our hometown hero's". Well I can tell you I didn't feel one ounce of compassion and will not be returning to the ER there ever again. There's more but you get the gist. Diagnose. Do the bare minimum needed and kick em out with no dr follow up just paper directions. I felt completely dispensable and they could have cared less if I had died. read more

Twice now I have needed urgent care after heart problems and instead of giving me follow up appointments after coming home I get appointments 3 to 6 months later. These Doctors are a joke. They do not care about you and wish you well in your deathbed instead. Instead of keeping 20 mins a week out on their schedules for patients needing to be seen in a few days they keep the patient waiting and hoping they will survive while they schedule them for 6 months later. I am warning all people DO BEWARE that you will not get very good treatment at the heart institute. But you will get a bunch if BS given to you. My late mother was literally "killed" by a nurse at Borgess. I was so traumatized by this that I have just recently contacted the police agency to file criminal charges against this person. She was having some minor problems so I took her to Borgess and she was placed on the 2nd floor. I told them immediately to put a sign above her bed that she was deaf. Because I have owned a legal office for 40 years and had appointments the next day that I could not cancel, I did not spend the night with her. However, when one client cancelled an appointment the next morning, I went up to see her. She was so frightened and when I inquired what had happened, she explained that she was thrown up against walls, beaten over her entire body, etc. She asked that I take her out by the control center so she could show me the nurse. Of course, the nurse in question was not working. She immediately pointed to a young lady and said that was her, and the young lady said, "No, I didn't work last night. My name is Annie and I look a lot like her". I contacted the Township Police and the officer that came said he was 15 feet from his jurisdiction! I was so distraught I did not call the City, I just wanted to take her home. The person in charge had been there as were many other staff members. When I got her home, she was in a great deal of pain and I immediately saw that her dentures had been cracked and glued back together. For the first time in her life, at the age of the age of ninety, I had to have pain medication called into the pharmacy. The next day, both arms were totally black and blue from the top of her arms to her elbows. I have many pictures and they make me cry every time I look at them. I also have the notes that I wrote to her that day asking her what happened......she could not hear well so on occasion I had to write notes to her and she would write back to me. She was in extreme pain and had difficulty with oxygen but I was so very frightened to take her back to any facility at that point. This occurred in March and she passed away on May 8th at Borgess. Autopsy, although it took some time because the medical examiner, Dr. James Hunt, was not only her family doctor but employed by Borgess Hospital, so a long delay! When it was finally received it indicated she had three broken ribs, one of which was old/calcified and the others were recent. Although she was 90 years old she was still a very vital woman and did not deserve to be abused and then die because of this nurse's brutality! People need to stand up and fight the abuse and corruption at Borgess. This woman that caused such pain and suffering to my mother and the daily mental pain that I continually visualize how she was beaten and I wasn't there to defend her, needs to be incarcerated and I will see that she is! read more

I developed Appendicitis the night before Memorial day. I decided to wait and go in the next day as I figured if the pain didn't go away, it wasn't just gas pains. From the ED staff, to transport staff, to the floor staff to the OR staff, everyone was very attentative, friendly and professional. I have to say that I've heard horror stories about this hospital but everyone's experience is different, and I def would go back if needed. I ended up having an Appendectomy on Memorial day and even though I spent 13 hours that day there, it was a pleasant 13 hours with great staff. read more

They look for ways to, first gouge you at the beginning with unnecessary care that will up-charge your bill, then at the end when your insurance pays the portion of the care (explanation of benefits), Borgess will not acknowledge it. My step-dad had hip replacement surgery here yesterday and I'm not a fan of the bedside manner...never have been. I think there are two issues here: 1) Union nurses is contradictory to fantastic service and 2) patients to nurse ratio. The call light blinks for 45 minutes to get someone in the room to use the bathroom....the dinner trays sit for an hour and a half. The physician was fantastic but the rest is not a great story from my personal experience yesterday and last night. When people are in the hospital, they are in fact needy and should not have to wait for service that comes at such a high cost, both financially and physically. read more

I've been to this location 9 times this year and have gotten a different diagnosis every single time. These people don't know what they are doing. Please go elsewhere for any emergency care you need. You won't get anything cared for here. And they shouldn't put return to hospital emediately if symptoms worsen on the paper. It's a waste of money and time.
