We've been to the Ashby Inn 3 times now and we love it!! It's just about an hour from DC, which makes it an easy and quick get away for the weekend. The rooms are well appointed and comfortable. Our favorites are the king rooms in the schoolhouse. The Lafayette room for example. The room is quite large, with a king bed, a cute balcony and beautiful view of the grounds. The Ashby Inn has a pretty incredible restaurant. I'm shocked it doesn't have a Michelin star. We had the tasting menu this weekend and it was fantastic!! Every dish was plated beautifully. And even more delicious. Some standouts were the tuna tartare, crispy branzino and amazing mousse desserts. Breakfast is included and it's very good as well. They serve their amazing croissants with fruit and your entree. I like the Full Ashby because you get a bit of everything - eggs, potatoes, bacon and veggies. My family came to Ashby Inn for a holiday meal. The view of the mountains was beautiful and very cozy on a cold and snowy winter day. The food was good but it was a little too salty for me. The dessert on the other hand was very good. It was like a pumpkin cheesecake with a mascarpone-like filling. Stephen's service was first rate. The food absolutely delicious. This restaurant was the ideal venue for celebrating our 5th wedding anniversary. Been going to the restaurant here for years. But recently stayed at the inn for the first time. First, let's talk about the food. Dinner or brunch are great options here. Recommend sitting outside if the temps permit, as the views are amazing. The menu moves with the seasons and generally includes a mix of meat and fish dishes. We have found that they do amazing things with salmon, duck and steak in particular. Also any soup we have ever had there has been great. Desserts are next level good and the wine list is extensive, including great local options from Linden, Glen Manor and Boxwood. Finally had the opportunity to visit Ashby Inn and the experience exceeded out expectation! We went for brunch on a beautiful Saturday and sat outside on their patio overlooking breath taking view! The service was excellent and all our dishes came out tasty and beautifully presented. The pictures were only a few shots of what I had but we also had their cheese platter and filet and eggs. We stayed at the Ashby Inn and dined in the restaurant. The room was large with an ample balcony. The view is wonderful. The weather was warm and mild for both dinner and breakfasts on the patio--exquisite. The dinner meal was excellent and service professional and personable. Breakfast included freshly baked croissants, fresh orange juice and an array of items nicely done. Located in a town named Paris, Ashby Inn is worthy of a special trip. I recommend coming on a nice day take advantage of the outdoor seating and scenery. Of all the dishes, the appetizers and desserts really stood out. I enjoyed the beef tartare and gazpacho soup. I also tried the crab cake eggs benedict. The crab cake was made with all crab meat which was excellent. But I am not sure I would take a road trip for the eggs benedict. Overall, service was great and we had a relaxing lunch. read more

I had been wanting to try this place for quite awhile so we finally went to celebrate my birthday. The food WAS good, but the service was super disappointing for this caliber of restaurant. Our waitress was clearly frazzled and there seemed to be chaos in the whole place even though the patio was the only packed area ( where we were not located). We heard the chef have a major meltdown - screaming at the servers and then a big crash in the kitchen. The servers around our area were all openly complaining, which is never cool. Last night, my husband and I went to The Ashby Inn Restaurant to celebrate our wedding anniversary. I was shocked that for a special celebration, we arrived at 5:45pm and we were back in our car heading home by 6:30pm. If you're looking for a good meal, the restaurant will not disappoint. However, what really impacted our experience was the service. The entire experience was so rushed and as my husband put it, it felt like the orchestra was missing its conductor. We were asked to provide all of our choices up front (we did the a la carte menu), which made sense for the kitchen, but the pacing was very off. Additionally, there was someone who appeared to be "in charge" in the room in which we were seated who was scolding his colleagues right in front of our table! It was so painful to watch that I reached out to one of the staff who was being scolded in front of us and let her know that she was doing a good job. Nobody should be treated like that, and doing so in front of customers felt so unprofessional. Needless to say, this was not the anniversary dinner we had hoped for, especially after having such a wonderful time a few years ago and driving 1.5 hours for what we had hoped would be another very memorable and positive experience. I can no longer recommend The Ashby to friends and we will likely not be returning. read more

The food was what I expected from reviews and pictures but the experience was ruined by the waiter and sommelier, wines weren't up to par with what you would expect for the price, and everything was rushed. Beautiful setting and super cute old cozy house. Reminds me of field and main but smaller. Food was incredible! I believe they change their menu seasonally. The bread was to die for - especially the cheesy duck fat bread with sun dried tomatoes. AMAZING! Some of the best bread I've ever had. It's baked fresh daily and I wish they were able to bring more out. The red pepper and tomato soup was perfect for a fall evening. So flavorful and creamy. The kale salad was sooo fresh! A good addition to a heavy meal. The steak strip loin was a little too rare for my taste but it was cooked to medium rare perfection. The potatoes dauphine they serve with the steak were cheesy, tender and so hot out of the oven. I loved the spinach risotto! Not too heavy and a HUGE serving size. I have travelled extensively, both here and abroad, and have stayed in some of the world's finest hotels (Sofitel, Ritz-Carlton, Four Seasons). I could compare the fine service and dedication to detail at The Ashby to any of them. But it's rather more than that. I came limping off the Appalachian Trail with an injury. The Ashby was within walking distance when nothing else was, but I am so glad I found them. I meant to stay a day. I stayed nearly a week. I began my stay in the West Dominion room, then transferred to the Fireplace room. They are both quite exceptional. The main building once slept General George Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette--they would be favorably impressed. I must especially compliment Rory, the day manager, who's level of attentiveness to my every need was superb--but like the best in the industry, he anticipated my needs as well. I cannot say enough good things about the warm and welcoming staff--they will give you all the respectful space you need and operate quietly in the background for you. Or, if you're like me--the extroverted sort--they are more than happy to engage. Maxine, Wendy, Robbie, Max, Haley--they all just made my experience perhaps the best of any stay, anywhere. The Ashby is the perfect getaway near the Blue Ridge Mountains, but smack dab in the middle of the Virginia wine country. Hiking trails at Sky Meadows park (much more forgiving than the Appalachian Trail) are within a very short drive. The farms surrounding the Ashby are verdant and bucolic--the word "picturesque" does not begin to describe the location. My only hesitation in leaving this review is that it will no longer by "my little secret" -- yet they are welcoming me and my wife in November. I promised her I'd take her! And thank you Jon, the executive chef, for a delightful evening repast of accessible haute cuisine. That, like everything else--perfectly sublime! read more

This is a mixed review focusing on the Inn experience and the food. The Inn is friendly and comfortable in a pastoral setting with great views. I posted one photo of the grounds where we had a glass of wine one night. I would rate the Inn a 5. The food experience was mixed. The breakfasts were tasteful, and the food was plentiful. Our server was excellent. I cannot say the same for the food served at dinner. I had Beef Wellington and my wife had Duck. While the presentation was excellent (see photos), we both felt the dishes lacked flavor and left disappointed with our meals. I must add, though, that our server was excellent. All in all, it was a pleasant stay. However, I would dine elsewhere for dinner next time. read more

We visited the Ashby Inn on a whim on a Friday night driving from Fairfax hoping to see the Aurora. Unfortunately the experience left my husband and I a bit disappointed. I've dined all over the world, from 3 Michelin starred restaurants to local favourites, and the Ashby Inn is the most overrated and overpriced experienced I've had in quite some time. The food was dated in terms of fine dining. Perhaps this is the charm of this place, but the prices did not reflect the culinary skills, nor the service. We were not brought a wine list until we asked, and our glasses remained empty for much of the meal despite our bottle being kept on ice a few meters away. The caviar was a pittance, tuna tartare overly complicated to the point that the flavour of the fish was lost beneath the mountain of wontons and avocado. The steak royale was served tepid as if it'd been sitting for a while before it made its way to the table. My husband's pork was adequate but he called it 'uninspired for the price'. Throughout this all, the service was pretty much abysmal. I understand that it was a Friday night, but I have never had such inattentive servers at an establishment that touts itself as being what the Ashby Inn fancies itself to be. Maybe my expectations were too high, but for a $400+ meal I expect far better service, especially when DC is a much closer commute than driving out to Paris, VA. If you're looking for a romantic fine dining experience, skip this one. I cannot fathom how this keeps getting 5 star reviews, unless the patrons aren't aware that this place is an outdated relic and rely on the reputation it insists upon itself. read more

Inn: The Inn is absolutely gorgeous! I stayed in the Fan Room (which is also the honeymoon suite, which I didn't know), which is bright and airy and has its own balcony. It is also located right above the restaurant, so coming and going was very easy with our own private entrance. The staff is friendly and helpful, and the grounds and gardens are absolutely beautiful. AND children under the age of 12 aren't allowed to stay at the Inn; bonus! I would stay here a million times over! Restaurant: The ambiance is very nice, especially if you are sitting outside. And the food is good. But not THAT good. And certainly not good enough to cost more than twice of any other place, even in DC. Our waiter was playful and a little flirty with me, which I may have been okay with at a dive bar, but at a fancy place like the Ashby, it was very unprofessional and off-putting. And even though breakfast is included with your stay, you essentially get the same limited menu each day. So, I highly recommend sleeping at the Ashby Inn, but don't eat there. read more

I brought my date here for a Birthday dinner. If I am being honest Ashby Inn was pretty disappointing. After a pretty great time at RDV Vineyards. Ashby was supposed to be the icing on the cake for our evening. The ambiance of Ashby is beautifully decorated with southern charm. The staff overall was pretty nice and attentive, which is why midway through my lackluster meal I just conceded that instead of sending things back and complaining, I'd just eat what was served and not come back. My biggest gripe is that I'm tired of pretty Instagram picturesque food, that is flavorless, bland and overambitious. The food was lovely looking, but the flavors told no stories, had no depth and rendered me very underwhelmed. The highlight might've just been the amuse-bouche and bread with honey butter, even that deserved maybe a sprinkle of salt for the butter. We ordered drinks; mine was the Thyme in the Bottle, my dates' drink I can't quite remember, but she sent it back. Both drinks were overly strong and if I was at a dive bar that would be fine, because my expectations would be lower and who doesn't enjoy boozy drinks. IT tasted like plain liquor and ice. However, super stiff drinks isn't always what customers are after, if I pay $15 for a cocktail(hers was $17) I expect to be blown away, I expect something that strays from the norm. So let's get to the food: Bay Scallop Ceviche: I was looking forward to this because blood orange and scallops are usually a match made in heaven. A month ago, I'd had the best Seared Scallops with Cara Cara Oranges in Phoenix and I was hoping this would remind me of that- it didn't. This ceviche was just bland. Not much acid, a lot of sweetness and no real distinct flavor. Everything was muddled and muted. Georges Mill Tomme Panna Cotta: This was a boring dish. It basically tasted like cottage cheese and nuts. Bacon Wrapped Monkfish: This was the only dish that was mildly satisfying. The fish was cooked well and it's wrapped in ham. Come to think of it, I've never eaten anything wrapped in ham or bacon I didn't like. Lamb Loin: Two baby pieces of under-seasoned lamb, actually one piece was seasoned better than the other. It was so little food on the plate, it almost felt like leftovers from a real meal. Beautiful looking plate, however. Dessert - Cotton Cake w/ Rhubarb: The cotton cake tasted okay, but the rhubarb pieces took away from the finesse of the dish. They were just kind of there. I don't know many people that like big chunks of rhubarb, because they can overwhelm the palette. A more pronounced sauce(there was a sauce), ice cream, etc would have been a better accompaniment to the cake. To sum it up, the decor and service is pretty good at Ashby. The plating is beautiful, but the flavors are not there. It's like meeting a super attractive person and realizing they have no depth. Also one of the biggest things that bothered me was that I made reservations and specified it was a birthday. The Ashby Inn literally made no special accommodations or gestures- this could've been as simple as a menu with the birthday person's name printed on it, two flutes of champagne upon arrival, or some special dessert or even comping the dessert we chose.
