While celebrating a special birthday we made reservations for a birthday dinner here. I will admit that I was slightly worried after reading so many negative comments. My interpretation of the gist of what everyone was complaining about was that they used to come here all the time (as did I years ago, but it's been a year since being here) and they didn't like the new, slimmed down menu... and they definitely hated the prices here now. Our service was ok, nothing special. I feel like the majority of the servers are very young and might not have the training, nor experience to understand what true service is, not just taking orders and bringing food. The menu was nice. We liked their "Everyday is Sunday" section of the menu, so we tried 2 orders (4 persons) of the pork chop tomahawk and 1 order (2 persons) of the Côte de Boeuf. We started with their Scotch Egg - WOW! Really flavorful with a great texture, inside and out. Definitely a very nice way to start. Cocktails and wine were a hit here for sure! Especially Jarad's G&T, which we got a couple of. Main dishes were great! Plenty of food too!! The spices on the crust of the porkchop tomahawk were so tasty and the temperature was spot-on! The steak in the Côte de Boeuf was incredible! Perfectly seasoned and at that absolute perfect temperature too! The carrots that came with this were very nicely done, but the potatoes stole the show! This dish came with OUTSTANDING Fondant potatoes... They had a great, smokey flavor to them, as if they were basted in pork fat. The meat was perfectly textured and flavored. Overall - While this is no longer the Hunter's Head that many came to know, love, and enjoy, I feel they're doing a decent job here. They have returned to the old school British pub favorites like chicken and leek pie and Welsh rarebit all with elevated quality. Service is great. Good family vibe. I had been regular of the establishment for many years prior to the recent sale in early 2026 to the new owners. I decided to check out the new changes this afternoon and was NOT impressed. I should have seen the red flags before choosing to dine, but decided to give the new ownership a try. Prior to being seated, the hostess advised me that they could no longer guarantee the produce and meats would be local/pesticide-free (I specifically asked about meats and poultry without hormones and antibiotics as this had always been the standard previously). In other words, they would "try" to source from local farms but the most important to new ownership was quality. I found the response interesting at best, especially since as a foodie, I would most certainly associate chemical-free foods with high quality. Being that there are plenty of farms within the area to chose from, I am not sure why this would be a challenge under the new owners. I ordered the eggplant and zucchini lasagna which although tasty, consisted of a very small portion for $28 which included no side dish, or even a small garnish for that matter. Apparently the new ownership has changed practically everything on the menu to include the elimination of bread and butter that had historically been served. The service I received was subpar at most. While the server was friendly, she appeared too busy wandering the restaurant despite it being practically empty. I ended up running out of tea and sat for 15+ minutes while the server checked on other tables, looked at my empty glass and passed right by. When she finally came back, I had to request another tea as if it were not obvious enough that a refill was needed. Eventually another staff member brought me a refill which further puzzled me as the server assigned to my table continued roaming the dining room seemingly confused. To add to the experience, although not typically an issue while dining out elsewhere, cell service is practically non-existent in the establishment (always has been). Historically, diners had the option to connect to the guest network. When I asked the server if I could get the updated password, I was advised that there was no longer a guest network available and everything was now reserved for staff. Note: the guest network remains active but with an updated password which the server seemed to have no response for. As I was preparing to pay my bill, a table was sat behind me and within minutes got up, asked another staff member for the password and miraculously was connected the network! When I got up to pay, I asked the team member who was cashing me out what the deal was with that, she replied "It must be something special that you have to ask the manager for". I was shocked at such a silly response. I definitely will NOT waste my money here again! read more

The new chef has really turned this place around! The food was just "meh" in the previous iteration...but we are blown away by every course now! The scotch egg is the most deeply flavored and spiced, South Asian-inspired version I have had--I can no longer order the bland ones at the fair after this! The welsh rabbit cheese toast was also really delicious. I don't normally order fish and chips because I tend to think it's pretty boring as a food item but I was inspired to see what this new chef could do--and he didn't disappoint! It was capped off by really delicious homemade tartar and curry sauces to dip in. Finally, the bread--SO dense and moist and warm, it just could not have been better. My vesper cocktail was also very boozy and good. The one point of disappointment was that the server didn't seem to be too happy to be talking with us, I'm not sure if we did something that irritated him but we felt bad/awkward every time we interacted. Great food and service. They have a lovely courtyard to eat in if the weather is nice. The inside is great too. It's an old building with a lot of history and they've kept all the character while also keeping it in good condition and every room is well-decorated. read more

food was excellent and wine menu was truly superb! we got the sunday lamb roast. service could have been slightly more attentive. my one issue, is that i wish they would have told us how long our roast would be. it was definitely worth the wait but a heads up would've been nice. i still highly recommend going and getting the sunday roast. read more

Food was amazing!! The owner of Tremelo, Knead Wine, and now Hunters Head has hit it out of the park again with a home run! We started with the Charred tomato, ricotta toasts and it's phenomenal. 4 squares of charred thick bread with fresh ricotta and cherry tomatoes. Delicious! Followed by the fish and chips which deserves every high praise it gets. We've traveled throughout Ireland and England to find the best fish and chips and little did we know we'd find it in Upperville! Thick, flaky, moist hake with the perfect seasoning served with a delicious homemade tartar sauce, curry sauce which quickly made it a totally different meal, and malt vinegar. Is it pricy? Yes, but for the portion size and quality, it's worth every penny! We ended with the toffee pudding which was large and good but a little too sweet for me. We had a great bottle of Chianti which we loved but pricey. I'd like to see a greater variety of wines in the $50-$65 range. And to add to the fantastic food, we had great service from Jameel. Very pleasant, knew the menu well, great service and we enjoyed getting to know him a bit. The restaurant was very busy on a Monday night so I'd advise making reservations sooner than later. Arrived back, and glad the food quality & service is still excellent. Definitely a local DC favorite. Came in late afternoon Saturday afternoon for my wife's birthday dinner, and seated after a short wait in the upper outdoor patio area. The day was a nice warm spring afternoon, and the low breeze was welcomed. The wooden patio table was large, and the seats very sturdy, but a bit hard to sit in. The lower patio with the tent is a bit louder, but good for general dining. Love the bar area too! Teen & I ordered a calamari and wife enjoyed a cesar salad for appetizers. All were very good, and the cesar was exceptional - and not overdressed. (+) For mains, we had the beef stroganoff & teen had the steak frites. Again, all were exceptional. The meat is from nearby Ayrshire farm, and very tender & flavorful. For afters there was a lemon sorbet in a hollowed out lemon (homemade, not store bought) and I had the sour cherry pie (good, but the filling seemed a bit underwhelming - but a very nice crust.) Price was not cheap with drinks & dessert ($60/person), but I'd say that it was commensurate with the quality of food & service. Service was very good (although the staff seemed to all be tired that day)- and the day manager did stop by all the tables to make sure we had what we needed. That was appreciated & nice to see. Glad we returned, and glad to see the Tavern doing well. Reservations highly suggested. Looking forward to returning. read more

The setting of this historic building creates a beautiful ambiance to dine. The service was friendly and food was delivered surprisingly quickly. I ordered the Cobb salad which had by far the most bacon I've ever seen on a salad. It was a large portion so I had extra for the next day. Fabulous B ordered the fish and chips and we both enjoyed the skinny hand cut fries. One note, we sat in the small dining room on the right when you enter and we could clearly and distinctly hear the conversation of the other patrons at the large table behind us. The HH is under new management and after looking at the ridiculous prices ($32 for fish and chips? $9 for bread which is complementary everywhere else??) I won't be back. The food used to be sourced locally, freshness was a big appeal, but sadly it isn't any longer. I have been a repeat customer since 2004 and have enjoyed lovely summer dinners on their patio, cozy meals in their main dining room in front of a wood burning fireplace, so it makes me sad. Absolutely amazing! The service is fantastic and the food is just as good. Since the reopening in early March I have been here every week. This is definitely my new go to spot. The second you walk it feels like coming home. Comfy and classy astatic making it a good place to stay for a while. I highly recommend the fish and chips, the pot pie and the Scottish eggs. This is an embarrassment of a restaurant that treats its customers like dirt. Under new management, prices have increased by almost twice their previous amount, the menu variety has shrunk by just as much, and the new wait staff have developed an immense pretentiousness. The restaurant is located in a beautiful old building, with great decorations and good ambiance. The costs are outrageous. I asked about how many "chips" (fries) come with the fish and chips, and the waiter told me "seven". For $32 dollars, you barely get enough food to vomit out after eating, which you will be wanting to do after tasting how shit it tastes. read more

I will begin this by saying that the Tavern is a lovely quaint restaurant that I have been waiting to go to for years. Today was a special occasion, a big Birthday for me so a perfect time to finally get to go. Unfortunately, the meal was hit or miss. To begin with, my son ordered a specific beer and was given a Miller Lite and told the waiter it didn't taste good and ordered a different beer (it wasn't until the bill came that we saw what he was given and that he was charged for both)! My fish and chips were very good, the fish was delicious. My son ordered the Bangers and Mash. The Bangers were good but where was the mash and peas? There was about a tablespoon of mash in total! For $28 you would expect a decent amount of what is probably the least expensive item in a grocery store! My husband ordered the Ploughmans Lunch. Being English, he grew up with this as one of his favorite dishes and was eagerly anticipating his lunch. Unfortunately, it was like the chef had run the plate (particularly the ham) under a faucet of salt. He is very sensitive to overly salty food and was unable to eat the ham and the eggs also had a layer of salt on top. Lastly, it was my birthday so we ordered two desserts. And the waiter just dropped them off, no candle, no birthday wishes, nothing at all. It's really a shame. I had been looking forward to going here for so long and between getting charged for incorrect items and overly heavy handed seasoning and paltry servings on my son's dish, it was very disappointing. The setting is lovely. Since new owners have come, the neighborhood friendly, quaint eatery is quite different. First, the prices have rocketed. And are unwarranted. Fish & chips is $32. And it is not done well with its hard fried batter on the fish. Be aware that EACH glass of iced tea is calculated separately. No refills. My friend and I split a wedge salad which was cut up and filled a large plate. The dressing was tangy and delicious. The desserts were also good. I don't know if I'll ever go again. The menu is not diverse and choices more expensive than they need to be. Too bad. I really enjoyed eating at the former place. No more stew, no more free delicious bread ( now it's delicious but not the same and there's a charge of $8 I think), no pot pies. Check the menu before you go. read more

Have been going there for decades and were highly disappointed; prices, quality of food and selection. My favorite has always been the fish and chips with cod and now they use hake which does not lend itself to this meal, all batter and a thin piece of fish. We go to England often and nobody uses hake for fish and chips. Won't return unless I hear the old quality has returned. What a downgrade, sad! read more

While I would love to give this place 5 stars, the truth is it fell short in many areas. It does great on ambiance and sort of on service and there were definitely a few standout dishes. The scotch egg, onion soup and fish and chips were great! Sticky toffee pudding too! Where it really missed the mark was the $16 kids burger plus $9 for fries (yes $25 for a kids meal). In fact everything seemed quite a bit overpriced for what you get. The eton mess was tasty but had only one small piece of merengue. My husband is British and laughed that the main component should, in fact , be merengue. The real thing that took away from the dining experience was the chicken pot pie. The presentation was beautiful, but when my husband and I each took a bite, it was awful. And the waitress didn't seem the least bit concerned or even ask about it when she took a nearly full plate of this $28 dish away. So all in all, give it a try! But order wisely. read more

This is hands-down our favorite pub. If it wasn't an hour drive, we'd be here every single week! I was born and raised in England, and this feels like home to me. My husband loves their fish and chips, and it's the best one I've had stateside so far that replicates home. Second best is the fish and chips at Hawk and Griffin. But this pub is adorable! The food is consistently good. The burger was really good with the GF bun. Last time we both had the steak frites and loved it too. The service is always very quick. They're very accommodating. I love sitting outside in the spring and summer, but the inside is great too. It is quaint, very British-feeling, and has great decor. Love the beams. Love the bar setting. Love the wooden floors. Love everything about this place. Like I said, if it wasn't closer to me, I'd be here all the time. 10/10. We've even here a few times now, and we'll be back many, many more. read more

We have been going to Hunters Head for over 20 years and couldn't wait to go for the remodel reopening. Wow!! What an utter disappointment. The prices are more, Which we expected but not a decrease in food portions and quality. If you want bread it's now $9.00 and when you order a burger it now an additional 9.00 for a side of fries. The blt and burger are the size of a slider. The blt was on a small untoasted burger bun with canned tomatoes. It was horrible! Please bring back the old quality and portions of food. read more

When ordering the Cote de Boeuf, the waiter said it was an entree for two because he said you can only order this for two. So, we thought good, that is $43 apiece, not so bad. Oh no, we failed to see the pp as we did not look at the menu again. The waiter should have been clearer in his description. Additionally, the price on the website for this entree is $79 not $86 which is misleading. After 45 minutes, it finally arrived and it was trembling! Having already asked the waiter is this cooked rare, medium or what? He didn't seem to know. Had to send it back at which point we were told it would be another 30 minutes to adjust. We said stick it under the grill, no they would not do that, so another half hour. By that time the Yorkshire pudding was cold and I am not particularly keen on raw carrots and one small pot of bordelaise sauce, that was enough for one, not two. The salad you could hardly see, not enough for two. The potatoes were very good. I asked for some salt and the waiter went to get some and he just stuck his hand in the salt and put it in a small dish. This happened twice because he did not give me enough in the first place. (untouched by human hand!) Then I asked for some English mustard, only to be told Grey Poupon was the only thing they had. No thank you. Then I asked for horseradish to no avail. Thought this was trying to be an English Pub. As you can guess, I am English, but have been over here in this area for many years. Your prices are ridiculous in my book. Hunter's Head Tavern has been a favorite of my husband and I for a good 20 years. We went for Mother's Day for the first time since they re-opened and were so disappointed. The menu leaves a lot to be desired. The fun chalk boards and regular pub menu has been transformed into . . . well . . . not much. They did at least keep the fish and chips which were always one of my go-to's. When it arrived, I had to go find my waitress to ask for ketchup, malt vinegar, and some more tartar sauce--the tartar sauce that came with the meal was enough for about 4 bites. I was floored when I was told I would have to pay $4 for each teaspoon of both tartar sauce and ketchup! When I expressed my unbelief I was given "complimentary" teaspoons of both sauces. I never got any malt vinegar. Bread and butter, which used to arrive at the table automatically, is now listed on the menu as costing $9. For bread and butter? The meals of the rest of our party were lacking and over priced. For instance, my daughter-in-law ordered chicken Milanese. It came with the chicken and some arugula on the top--that was it. Pasta? Rice? The food that we did receive was delicious and the drinks were good. But I will not be returning. I am so sad to lose such a wonderful restaurant and hope they eventually return to their roots of simple, delicious, and reasonably priced pub food. read more

Old lovely tavern with a private patio for nice weather. We started with cocktails, all nicely made, not too over artsy. Nice waitstaff brought crispy bread along with the calamari appetizer we shared. Nice lemon and light aioli sauce. All the grains, meats, vegetables, seafood are as local as possible and sustainably raised or caught. I had the trout accompanied by delicious local grits, steamed crispy Brussel sprouts. Very large portion. I added the Caesar salad, nice creamy dressing and a perfect anchovy. It's a very interesting setting in the village of Upperville, that very much gives the classic British country side tavern vibe. Definitely make a reservation if you want to come, it does get crowded. The first time we tried to go at lunch, it was a 1.5 hr wait. Service was ok- friendly but not very attentive. We had to ask for almost everything that should have been fairly basic. The food was mediocre, with the bread being the best part. My chicken fried steak was ok at best, seeming to follow the British food trend of using minimal to no spice or seasoning- not what I would expect on a southern style dish. Even the potatos were bland, and the green beans were screaming for a hefty dose of salt during roasting. The kids meal were not much better. The Mac and cheese was a runny mess. I noticed she was waiting on a number of tables at same time & kept everyone in check. Ambience was great, very cozy, quiet & loved outdoor seating. Everything we ordered was stupendous! The quiche was light, and soufflé-like; accompanied by a light greens salad (get the lemon herb vinaigrette). I was informed the sandwich was mighty tasty. The Blueberry pie was to die for....not too sweet! The service was above and beyond. I really enjoyed walking around and checking the place out. What really neat place with rich history!
