Had a real nice lunch at the Mongolian grill today. Tried a few different sushi rolls - I can't identify them but they were all pretty good. They keep a nice selection on hand behind sliding doors adjacent to the stir fry grill. The wait staff is watching and quick to refill drinks and clear the tables. The selection today seemed to be better than past visits and everything was fresh, hot and good. They offer 3-4 soups, salad bar with a mountain of shrimp and a dessert bar with cheesecake, soft serve ice cream and even a couple hot pastry style desserts. The inside of the restaurant is well lit, clean (including the bathroom). The only downside was it seemed cold at our table. read more

We arrived around 3p, on a Monday afternoon. Dining room had a few tables with customers seated. It's a cute buffet needs some updating. Seats are comfortable but worn. We were seated immediately, staff was very friendly and drinks came out in a timely manor. Buffet had a lot of choices, but things were greasy, tough, and not fresh. The best thing we ate was the fried rice and lo mein. It was $29. for two with drinks. Maybe things would be fresher closer to lunchtime or dinner. We were disappointed with our meal and this restaurant. Hope things turn around for this place. read more

Came back here looking forward to another good night after a basketball tournament. I was dead wrong. First off the waitresses have a huge attitude like you owe them something. It was a bother for them to get you refills or to take your empty plates away. I asked for crab leg crackers and she yelled something like go to the front. I go to the front and no one is around, so forget trying to eat crab legs that have been over boiled and too soft to even crack. They just bend around and get you frustrated. Now for the quality of food they have, boneless ribs are so tough you can't even bite into unless you have steel teeth that have been sharpened to razor blade quality. The chicken which has a lot to choose from is all pretty much doughy and super hard as well. The shrimp all still had their intestinal tract still in place. I'm not talking about one kind over another, fried, walnut shrimp, you name it all full of it. Now if you happen to loose your appetite and have room for desert go try as you might get some soft serve ice cream. I tried to get vanilla ice cream to no avail, so then let's try the chocolate/vanilla mix which I had hope for. The machine banging and roared to life only to shoot out some of the most liquid mix of nastiness. I wrote this review in all honestly. I will never come back to this establishment. Eat here about once a month. No complaints. I like the food and the variety. Staff is quick and efficient. It's a buffet and they arnt my friends so I don't expect chit chat from them like some apparently. I have no complaints on the food, it is pretty standard fare for an Asian buffet, no better nor worse. I have my favorites and stick to I those. I havnt tried everything but frankly I don't expect pizza or fries to be top notch in this type of restaurant nor do I come here to eat them. read more

Variety is key and this place has got it. Mongolian grill, sushi and maki, salad, sweets, and of course very good Chinese style food. I was particularly taken by the many appetizer items. The stuffed shrimp were crazy good I can't figure out how they made them. The food here is exceptional for a buffet place huge array of choices and a nice variety of beef pork chicken shrimp and fish. I was very impressed. The dining area is large and fun. They have many different things to offer. I think it's a good place for the price. The women are nice. Great family establishment. I would definitely give this place seven out of 10. Place has gone downhill badly. Prices have skyrocketed more than most other restaurants ($20+ per person for the lunch buffet??) and the quality of the food has done a severe nosedive. My favorites from the buffet all tasted off or were oddly slimy or cold. The decor inside was breathtaking! The running water fountain and the cultural music was very enjoyable while we ate. The food was steaming and seemed fresh and was most definitely delicious! The bill was under $30 for 3 people, which is an amazing deal considering the high quality of the food and decor! When I am in the area again I will be sure to return! read more

Food is mediocre at best. A large selection of foods offsets the so so taste to give it an ok rating. 3 stars. Foods include all the normal foods at these types of restaurants but this one also has a sushi bar area. French fries, chicken nuggets, onion rings available for the kids who aren't into the Chinese food. read more

Our food was cold! The restaurant opened at 11 & we arrived an hour later. Based on the flavor & toughness we truly believe the majority of the food must have been leftovers from the day(s) before. A knife couldn't cut through our dumplings. The coconut shrimp, which is usually a favorite, was cold & thoroughly disappointing. The meat was dry & the veggies were tough!... And this was their Christmas Day offering @$16.00/person! Our strong recommendation: Go find one of the other smaller Chinese restaurants in town. We should have. There is also a wonderful buffet just inside the town limits of Malone NY (East on Route 11 ~ less than 45 minutes away) [We couldn't travel that far today]. We will avoid this place. Context, people! Context! "Mongolian" is not in the heart of New York's Chinatown, nor is it a nice Chinese restaurant in the suburbs. This is the North Country. And this is by and large the best we are ever going to get in Potsdam! Thank you Dave B. for understanding this! Here's what works with Mongolian: It's rarely cold. It tastes good, and not like it's going to make you sick. The waiting staff are quick to refill your drinks. And they have moose tracks ice cream. I spent 3 years in Potsdam, and I probably gained 10 pounds thanks to Mongolian. I grew up outside New York, and I knew not to expect that kind of taste. But in reality, this is QUITE good for upstate Chinese buffet. I have been to several in Binghamton (a city with a college for that matter), one in Plattsburgh, and one in Glens Falls, and none hold a candle to Mongolian. The one in Plattsburgh in particular made me quite sick. For rating buffets it is important to take the following things into consideration, which I am rating on a 1-5 scale: - Hotness of Food: 4 - Frequency of Changing Trays: 2 (gotta get better at this...) - Frequency of Drink Refills: 4 - Cleanliness of Buffet Area: 4 Before you eat at Mongolian, drive a quarter mile down May Road, just a right off 56. Look around you. Nothing but trees, cows, fields, and probably snow. Turn around, drive back, and eat at Mongolian. For the middle of nowhere, this is as good as it's gonna get. read more

Very good food and an excellent variety. They do a great job changing the trays and keeping the food fresh and hot. Service is great, drinks are refilled quickly and the wait staff is friendly despite the language barrier. The other Chinese-style buffets in the area can't hold a candle to this place; it easily puts the Gouverneur and Canton buffets to shame. You'd have to go all the way to Watertown for a comparable buffet. read more

They also served fries which were very briny. The service was very fast and the servers were very polite. My college friends and I used to go to this place a lot. We stopped going because the wait staff hovers way too much. It was really uncomfortable trying to have a conversation while the waitress standing two feet away and staring at you. Where this place shines is the decor. When you walk in you feel like you're in another world. It's really quite impressive. As for the food...well, it's alright. They have a pretty good variety of foods, with a sushi counter and wok-to order station. The Wok-to-order was pretty bland. Other than that, it's typical Chinese buffet food. It's definitely NOT vegetarian friendly. The only vegetarian dishes they had were vegetable lo mein, macaroni and cheese and pizza. So if you're looking for a place with a ton of bland, cheap food with hovering waiters and a really nice interior, this is your mecca. read more

As for the Mongolian Grill, it's three different restaurants in one. Sushi for those that like that(I don't), typical American Chinese big selection (lots of fish which I love) good and hot but not authentic Chinese, but if you go to the back the Server will cook your choice of many different kinds of meat fresh and hot to on the charcoal hibachi while you watch. Notice the ship's steering wheel on the boat shaped serving table; that's the TEN COMMANDMENTS in Chinese! The restaurant is Christian owned and operated. Best in this neck of the woods. All dishes were extremely salty, and the meats were dried out and tasteless. This is a typical Asian buffet. Like any buffet there are always food that is good while other food is bad. They have a good selection on food and deserts. This is a great place for college students to come and eat all you can. For mediocre food, I think the price is a little bit high costing $12.95. It used to cost $9.95 for dinner which is what I would be more willing to pay for this food. The wait staff is friendly, but I feel a bit rushed as they are always asking to clear your plates and try to give you the check as soon as they take one plate away.
