This is one of my favorite grocery stores! They have such a great selection of gourmet and everyday items. I love stopping by the deli to get one of the chicken salads or pasta salads for a night at Ravinia or for an easy lunch. The store has great gourmet cheeses and meat/fish plus the best produce not from a farmer's market. I love going through the fruit and veggie area to see what's in season! The folks behind any of the counters are super helpful with preparation and meal complement ideas. My family has ordered the Thanksgiving special a few years running and it was probably the best Turkey we've had along with delicious sides. The store has a great layout and is super easy to get through when doing your weekly shopping. The freezer cases were also recently updated. Recently discovered the sunset grille and we have been enjoying it very much. Great sandwiches, wraps and salads. One disappointment today however was getting the pre-marinaded steakhouse skirt steak from the meat department which had been a favorite for many years. Hadn't gotten it in a while, but decided to splurge for a special occasion today. At. 34.99 a pound it's a bit pricey, but has always been worth the higher pricing in the past. I'm not sure if the marinade was changed or what happened, but it was extremely salty. It was difficult to eat - very different than before. Sadly, Couldn't finish it. read more

Stopped in at this store the other day just to grab a few quick things between big grocery hauls, and my total somehow came out to over $90?! Really shockingly high prices.. A jar of peanut butter was $15! This would be one thing if they were offering some exceptional quality, but their deli fare is pretty standard, their bakery selection was extremely picked over, and their produce was especially upsetting, with about a third of the cartons of berries/plums/packaged fruits I inspected blatantly having mold growing in them. If you want people to pay inflated prices, then your products should match the price tag. The staff was friendly throughout the store, but I just can't justify shopping at a place that overcharges this much for standard items. Disappointing. read more

We often eat lunch at their in store restaurant. Food is always tasty and for the most part reasonably priced. Today they were out of Diet Coke. The kind lady behind the counter offered to go find us a bottle at the front of the store. We accepted this exceptional gesture. Several minutes later she came back to tell us that they were also out upfront BUT that did not stop her from delivering excellent customer service. She went to the Coke shelves, brought us several bottles (since these were smaller than what we had paid for at the counter) and a small bucket of crushed ice. WOW what AMAZING customer service. I thought those days were gone, but not at the Libertyville Sunset. I later found out that the woman's name began with an L (sorry I can't remember) and she is the assistant store manager. She is a keeper and her future should be very bright. Take note Sunset! read more

Sunset is my go to place for specialty items but mostly for pampered service. I am a short senior, have trouble reaching high shelves. There is always staff readily available to reach things for me, or find things. I love the help unloading cart for check out! I love drive thru pick up service. I am willing to pay for the extra service to accommodate my age. Love the Parmesan Tilapia from the deli. I have shopped Sunsets in Libertyville, Northbrook, Long Grove, and looking forward to the opening in Northfield, which is close to an area I frequent. read more

That has never happened anywhere in the country! I liked most everything about this store, except it's a little pricy. I've been a Sunset customer since my mother took me to the Highland Park location 60 years ago. I now shop at the Libertyville location which is 5 minutes from home. My complaint is about the seafood department. My husband and I have frequently purchased fish and seafood there and each time, we vow to go elsewhere due to poor quality or freshness issues. Yesterday, I thought I'd try one more time and bought a pound of "fresh" raw Gulf shrimp. When I got it home and removed the top from the container, the ammonia smell was so strong, my husband could smell it from the next room. I emptied the container into a bowl and looked at the shrimp. One was discolored, not pink with a very thick, dark "vein." Others were slimy and the shells literally fell off. I dumped the order in the garbage, triple bagged. When my husband opened the garage door this morning, the smell was overpowering. I called the manager and he was very nice. I don't want my money back. I called to make sure that the shrimp was discarded so no one else would purchase it or worse, actually cooks and eats it. This is the last time I'll be going to the seafood counter. I'm sad because I really do like shopping at Sunset. The staff is helpful and friendly, the produce department is terrific, and I usually can find what I'm looking for. I'll keep shopping there but will purchase fish and seafood elsewhere. If you choose to purchase fish or seafood there, I advise asking for a sniff before committing! read more

Yes, Sunset prices are higher but so is the quality. You have to carefully pick and choose the items you buy and save purchases on staples for the Jewel. The meat and cheeses are superior and so are the fresh muffins, bagels and homemade soups. If you have an issue and contact their website, the store manager calls you quickly to rectify it. read more

Sunset foods was always my go to store despite higher prices. I was willing to pay higher prices for quality food. As of late this store's quality has declined. I bought a watermelon yesterday that went into the garbage. It was dry and had no taste. I was also charged full price for Ice Mountain water that is on sale. I'm not sure I want to go back even for a refund on the water. Heinens might be a better choice for me and closer to my home. read more

I think the store is very unique. It's very clean. They offer such a wonderful range of foods in the deli. I worked in the neighborhood several years ago. I would come in and get their salad bar. It was a bit expensive, but it was so good. Now I stop in from time to time This is the second time I bought an ethnic cuisine entrée in their homemade deli section. The first time it was the chicken quesadilla. It should've been called the little black bean quesadilla because that's all that was in there. It was little black beans and cheese. It was horrible. I took the chance again and bought some little mini chicken tacos. Needless to say they were the worst! So if you're going to shop here, don't buy any ethnic cuisine homemade foods in the deli. They obviously don't know how to make them. Other than that the store is fine. read more

Sunset in Libertyviile used to be my fav grocery store. Staff were incredibly helpful & willing to go the extra mile. Produce & deli were the best in the area. They also had a very tasty bar & grill. This was pre-Covid. Now...I don't know where to start. Moldy & expired food on the shelves is not uncommon. Produce is sad & not fresh...every single week. I work hard all week & am exhausted when I have to spend my Saturday morning looking for one decent apple that's not soft, bruised & overripe. The deli used to be much better with more variety. Now...it's the same sad overpriced entrees day after day week after week. I used to justify paying more for higher quality food & better service but no longer can I do this. Today's was my husband's birthday & I wanted a small cake. After I got it home I realized the sell by date was today--not good--cake was dry & I was embarrassed & today was the last time I will ever shop here. Save yourself the frustration. Go to Mariano's in Vernon Hills or better yet Heinens in Bannockburn. I never have these issues...ever at Heinens & prices are about the same. p.s. The bathrooms are just gross. The floors are always wet around the toilets, the toilets always have pee on them & they just smell really bad. read more

Sunset took my bagging issue very seriously, and I couldn't be more appreciative. I haven't found a grocery store near Grayslake that carries the quality of food nor the specialty foods that I shop for, and I can count on Sunset. I'm also hoping for and looking forward to an expansion of their natural, organic & health food inventory. Fingers crossed they start carrying monk fruit powder and/or monk fruit sweetner. I'm a huge fan of this store. They have a great variety of items, some you can't find anywhere else, and the proteins are very high quality. Now that they have online ordering and pick up, I go there every week. It's great to be able to start and save an order, see past history, and have a list of past items I've ordered. There are a few other grocery stores closer to me but being able to not even get out of my car to pick up my order is a plus. read more

This is a pretty good grocery store for the area. I personally prefer to shop at other locations, but they carry bagels from Once Upon a Bagel (local bagel place in Highland Park) and this location was closer than the one in Long Grove so I came here instead. I was pleased with the location and the selection of items that they carry. I like that they carry food from local places. The customer service was great and the employees were very friendly on an early Saturday morning. The only downsides would be the limited selection of fruits and also the prices, which to me, seem a lot higher than other grocery stores in the area. I would shop here again. read more

Every grocery store hires teenagers. It's cost-effective and it's a job that they can do without a lot of training. It's fine and normally works out. I don't know what is going on with the teens at this location of Sunset, but they are consistently the most snooty, above-it-all bunch of kids I have ever encountered...and it's actually impressive how consistent they are. I've lived here for a long time and no matter what new teen cashier I encounter, they are always terrible to be around and outwardly put off by working here. Why am I paying these prices only to be treated like a second-class citizen every time I'm here? I only go here because it's he quickest grocery to my house; but sometimes I think it's not even worth it. Please, vet your cashiers when you hire them. Or hire adults. Had a bad experience a few days ago at the Libertyville Sunset - I expect better and want the manager and other customers to know about this. There was some sort of animosity between the checker and the bagger. They were "joking" around with each other about who works harder, but there was a real meanness about it - definitely not joking. This clearly made customers in two checkout aisles uncomfortable and continued throughout the checking/packing of my order. Once home I discovered that due to the checker being distracted by this arguing she had scanned some of my items more than once. Sunset employees - please be more professional and accurate. Customers - check your receipt, as I should have done, before you leave the store to guard against double scanning. Disappointing...I was a regular customer, but won't be back. read more

If I could give this Grocery store 0 stars, I would. The way they treat their employees is inhumane and demeaning. They won't let them go to the bathroom, cannot drink water, are expected to learn in 5 hours (not 5 shifts). Not only do I know this from someone close to me, but from word of mouth of employees in the store (while working). Therefore, not only will I be making this known on here, but will be spreading the word and will never shop here or any other Sunset. read more

Terrible. When I go to a high end grocery. I expect high quality service. What I don't expect is an untrained cashier. I can see how that might happen, but when the cashier can't finish the checkout AND THEN BLAMES ME, I find it inexcusable. You know what else is inexcusable- I had to ask for a manager. Then I had to get the manger myself. The staff wasn't capable of handling that, either. Special. Then I had to be checked out. AGAIN. And there is no "at least" to it being done correctly. My while life I've never had to check out at the grocery store more than once for the same groceries. I will certainly think more than once before going back. Best service hands down from any supermarket in the area, including Whole Foods. There are always people around to help you find that obscure ingredient, plus they'll even walk you to the location! It's as upscale as Whole Foods without the organic focus. As for meats and seafoods, it's better than anywhere else. We've found unusual smoked fish here which you can't find as well as price-no-object shellfish, premium meats and organ meats. It's no bargain, so be prepared; but as for prepared foods, bakery liquor, and overall selection, this place is amazing. read more

I like the food options at Sunset, however the workers make me feel like they are doing me a favor by letting me shop there. There is a very pretentious feeling at the store, and that is a shame because the store does stock many items I like. And I don't like when they unload my cart for me. I am capable of doing this myself. I just want to get my groceries, pay and get home. Tough to write a review on this place. I love their selection, if you love to cook, they have anything and everything you would want. I also love the service, the staff is very friendly and they help you unload your groceries at the checkout which is awesome. It is a VERY expensive place to shop. Borderline Whole Foods level prices. But you are paying for the selection and the service. Unfortunately though, I think their quality is suspect. I bought some fresh salmon filets here and when I opened it up to prepare it the next day it had gone bad. I smelled it before I bought it and it wasn't rotten then, but it sure did go bad fast. That's a stink you won't soon forget! I can't remember that ever happening to me, so I'm wondering if they need to improve the quality control on their fresh foods. It sucks because I still haven't found anywhere around the Vernon Hills/Mundelein area that has awesome fish and meats. I was hoping this place was it. The freezers were leaking all over the floor, packages were either melting from defrosting or freezer burnt from refreezing. Whole paper towel rolls shoved under the leaking bits , it just looked a bit sloppy. I'm wondering if the pizza I purchased is safe to eat or if it had thawed and refrozen. I normally like sunset but when it comes to refrigeration they need to have someone on top of that because you can't have people buying unsafe partially thawed foods! read more

First of all that map is wrong. Sunset is on the corner of 137 and Butterfield Rd. This place is way better than any other grocery store nearby. Service is amazing. They unload your cart for you and then load your car if you'd like. It spoils you. I come here at least three times a week. The deli is amazing. The produce is better than any other place in Libertyville. The salad bar is awesome and has completely ruined me for bagged lettuce. Their selection of stuff in general is great, but if there's something they don't have, they'll usually order it for you if you ask. They have a pretty good selection of gluten-free items and they've been expanding it lately. Employees are usually friendly and helpful. Parking lot is pretty annoying though. Lots of self-centered morons. Oh yeah, their default bags are paper with handles, which is by far the best kind of grocery bag. read more

Selection is one of the best in the Libertyville area, but can be expensive. For this price, I'd rather go to a Whole Foods, but there are none nearby... I was a little disappointed by the produce section, as the variety of fruits was limited. Or perhaps I'm spoiled by the market selection on the West Coast. At least of the deli products I chose, they were good. Deli service was great. The ladies and gentlemen who work there are generally top notch in friendliness. Service: Deli counter -- good, nice, talkative, and light-hearted. Pre-checkout -- very nice, and always jumped in to help unload groceries onto the belt. Checkout -- Okay, what the hell happened here? I've seen the cashiers be chatty and friendly with other customers, and I made the effort to say hi, ask how their day is going, and just general small talk. I received a good amount of cold-shouldering here. Honestly, I would have skipped coming back here for this, but they are the only place in town I could find carrying items I was looking for.
