Went for dinner on a weekday. We were seated immediately. After ordering, our dishes arrived in like 10 minutes. So fast! And it all tasted fresh. We both got half portions (which came with rice) and our portions were huge. A lot of food for your buck! I ordered the Pon Pon Chicken. Breading was SPOT on. So fluffy and crunchy. Texture people will love it! Yum yum yum. I did like the sauce but I felt like it could have had a bit more of a sweet sour kick. My mom got the Cashew Chicken with veggies. I tried it and it was really yummy. Definitely a lighter choice than mine (for the more health conscious). They weren't stingy with their chicken or veggies at all! After being a customer for many years, the takeout meal we got Jan.2, 2021 was a major disaster. The three shrimp dishes were inedible. The shrimp had a terrible taste. These were dishes we had ordered many times before. After contacting the restaurant, the first employee said they would refund the shrimp meals. The owner called us back and insisted we bring the meals back, because he did not believe there was a problem. We brought the meals back, ( 20 minutes each way). At this point, we haven't heard back and have not received a refund. We were not trying to get anything for free and two of us went without dinner for the night. No meals and insinuations that we were the ones who had a problem, is the way to lose a customer. read more

Enjoyed eating here for over 20+ years. Tonight was the worst experience I have ever had at a restaurant. Party of 8 was seated at a table for 6. First 4 dinner plates brought out were dirty! Appetizers and entrees were served just minutes apart. We had barely just dished up the appetizers when they started putting the entrees on the table. This left no room at our crammed little table to fit all the dishes and plates so things were stacked on top of each other. Pot stickers were literally burned on the outside and doughy in the middle. Upon entering for the first time I was kind of stunned that the interior is relaxing but not Modern at all. Now for the food. We had the Pot Stickers based on Yelp reviews along with the Pon Pon Chicken, they were fabulous and would order them again. We also ordered Sesame Chicken and Fried Rice they were both lacking in flavor and I would not recommend them. The second reason for my blah review is there were pesky fly's that kept landing on our food and table. Now that's a deal breaker for me. A restaurant of this caliber should not have fly's landing on your food no matter what. In fact no restaurant should have this problem unless you're eating outside. I went here today on my lunch break with 7 other colleagues, I'm not really sure what we ordered, as our waitress seemed to have done that for us. It came out family style with about 7 different options and 2 appetizers (it was a lot of food)! For the most part, I thought it all was pretty good. Also, we had a party of 8 and no where on the menu or receipt did it say something a long the lines of "for parties of XXX and above, gratuity is included".... Our waitress had hand written her own tip on the credit card receipt... as if we didnt have any other option to tip her more or less than what she had decided it would be (she gave herself 20%). *I thought that was pretty strange. We went here for our Valentines date, the wait wasn't too bad but the parking was atrocious. The head valet was incredibly rude, while I understand it was busy and stressful there is no need to be yelling at customers. The parking lot was incredibly small and they were stacking cars I was worried someone's car would get damaged. The head valet was very demanding yelling at people calling them slow. Getting parked was extremely stressful and I don't recommend coming here on a holiday or weekend. However getting a table was a breeze, all of the wait staff was incredibly helpful and friendly, our food came out at a timely manner and it was delicious and very crispy compared to most Asian restaurants. I particularly loved the potstickers, they were like no other pot stickers I've had. When it came to the chicken and shrimp we had it tasted about on par with most Asian restaurants, but what sold it was it's crunch, these dishes are usually on the soggy side so I was impressed. We went in for dinner on a Friday night at around 6. The parking lot was pretty full so we were a little worried it was going to be crazy busy. We walk in and are seated immediately, it didn't seem busy at all. It was actually quiet where we sat which was a pleasant surprise. The interior has a classy and cozy feel. The service was very fast and friendly. We probably waited around 5 minutes for our soup and another 5 for our entree. We ordered the Egg Flower Soup which was pretty tasty and was at the perfect eating temperature. We ordered a dinner bundle and shared Sweet and Sour Chicken, Fried Rice, egg roll, a piece of shrimp, and wontons. Everything was great. The sweet and sour sauce was excellent, the pineapple in it was especially good. The chicken was good quality. My only negative comment is that the rice needed salt and that is obviously an easy fix. Overall we really enjoyed our experience here. We are looking forward to coming back soon to try more items on the menu. read more

This place has pretty good food and ok service We live very close by so it was our go-to Chinese food for a while. The first few times we ordered from here we got something like sweet and sour chicken and fried rice. Lately every time we try to order that they say that they won't give us fried rice and it came with white rice. The white rice is cold and 100% bland. You have to salt the hell out of it to make it taste good. It is very frustrating that they refuse to give us fried rice even if we offer to pay extra. We are tired of this happening to us so we will be going elsewhere for our Chinese food from now on. (Blue Bay has better food and it's not too far) read more

I have been eating at the Asian Star for about 10 years now and took my wife there for our first date. This was of course at their old location. This new location is a much nicer spot and the building is a lot bigger and a lot nicer as well. The food has always been excellent. We frequently get the fried rice, beef lo mein, cashew chicken, sweet and sour chicken, and our favorite and best thing on the menu is the walnut shrimp! I just tried their sushi and it was all excellent, but the albacore nagiri was a little lacking. One of my favorite things about Asian Start is that you can make a reservation! I hate all the chains where you can't make a reservation and most won't even let you call in ahead now and that is so frustrating. Being able to make a reservation is a part of service and the service here is great. The owners and managers often stop and say hi and check on things and I have never had a bad experience with service here. This place is the bomb. Enjoy. read more

I was here in the SLC area not on vacation, but on a medical trip -- a family member had an organ transplant and we were staying at the hotel across the street. About mid-way into the trip, I decided to try Asian Star for a late lunch. The beautiful building really drew me in! It was pretty dead at 1:00, and much less busy than I was expecting. I'd have thought there would have been better service since they weren't busy, but it wasn't good. I was seated promptly, but it took forever for her to come back and take my order. I ordered the lunch special 5 "Snow Pea Pod Stir Fry with Assorted Vegetables" with shrimp. I also wanted to try their calamari/seaweed salad, but they wouldn't serve it to me at lunch time. The food came within a reasonable period of time, but after that it was a ghost town. They seated me toward the back of the restaurant so almost nobody walked by and, when they did, I didn't seem to exist. I had to flag someone down for a drink refill, then again for directions to the restroom and a third time for my check. My shrimp dish was quite good, although I'd get it a-la-carte next time, and TO GO. The egg roll and soup were disappointing. And since the service was so poor, I decided not to visit again for the remainder of my trip. read more

This restaurant has been vastly underrated and is in need of a loving, in depth review: First off, the staff is friendly, prompt, and attentive. The restaurant is clean and while the layout isn't perfect, there isn't a bad seat in the house. The ambience indoors or on the patio is exceptional. We love coming for lunch and dining under the natural light but the patio around sunset is magical. Now for the food: This place has the BEST pot stickers in the world! (they're really dumplings, did I mention they are the best?) For this reason alone, you need to try this place! They have legitimately great tasting food beyond the appetizer menu too. My top Chinese dishes here are the pon pon chicken and walnut shrimp. Now most Chinese restaurants have crap sushi but I rank Asian star as having the best sushi in salt lake for quality and price--even better than tsunami. They rank third overall in my list of favorite Utah sushi restaurants, Yuki Yama in park city being the best, Osaka sushi & izakaya in Layton being the second. Don't get me wrong Tsunami is good, but their dishes have become bland to me. The variety and quality in Asian Star's sushi is simply excellent and they have made it into our regular sushi restaurant rotation. The Hawaiian roll is the greatest roll ever, but I wish they would go back to using the mint sauce. I also recommend the Dow and the freshie. Anything off the traditional roll or nigiri/sashimi menu is good because their fish is very good quality. In summary, Asian star deserves a second chance. I love Asian Star!!!!! First let's talk service, I will say on Friday and Saturday nights we call in a reservation. We are greeted at the door with smiles from Gary every single time! Once seated your treated as though you are their most important table. Your drinks are kept full, you're not going to wait long for your food. And the wait staff are absolutely amazing. The food is great! I highly recommend the Sesame Chicken! It's got a nice citrus glaze and it's always tender. They serve sushi, pho, as well as traditional soups and such. The drink prices are reasonable. We dress up to go, but it's pretty laid back for being such a beautiful establishment. This is not your strip mall Asian food! And the view is superb! read more

We took our seat upstairs so we could watch the sun set from the spacious windows and to our treat we got to see one of the brightest double rainbows we'd have ever seen. For an appetizer we ordered a Dragon Roll (and during dinner we heard one of the guests come up and compliment the sushi chef for his works of art sushi rolls). I think ours was pretty... But we were hungry so ours got devoured before we could admire it. For dinner I ordered the Walnut shrimp, a yummy dish, but be warned it's rich & sweet. My lady ordered something with fresh snap peas from the gluten free menu (there is a good selection of gluten-free items for those the want/need them). The portions were good and we both had left overs. All in all this is a great place if you want fresh food and meats that are not 80% breading. The staff was friendly, the restroom was clean and the building and property are well maintained. I'm looking forward to having diner here on the patio when weather permits. I've always been a fan of their Walnut Shrimp & used to go to their location by the mouth of the canyon often. I've been to this location twice and this last time, there was no one in there. When I arrived, there was a group of 10 eating lunch, but within a half hour the place was completely empty except for my group. I mean NO ONE was there and it was the lunch hour. Maybe they're more of a dinner place now? In any case, I had the Tangerine Shrimp and it was pretty good. Good portion too. Had the egg drop soup before which I liked but I missed having tofu in it like I do other places. Finally, the potsticker I got with my lunch was disgusting. It looked like dog food and didn't taste much better. They really need to step it up with the potstickers. YUCK. Our server was nice and attentive. As someone who travels the country and visits a lot of good restaurants, Asain Star ranks near the top for all the Chinese food establishments I've been.
