They declared I needed a $3k "deep-clean", discounted to $1500 b/c of my insurance, of which I would pay $1000 out of pocket. When I pushed-back and asked for just a standard cleaning, the dentist said if I did not get the deep-clean, they could be found negligent in care. So I acquiesced and paid $1000 out-of-pocket for the deep-clean. 30 minutes in the chair, I experienced the same cleaning my retired dentist performed as standard cleaning (prior dentist never billed beyond what insurance covered). I cannot recommend Meyerland Modern Dentistry, nor their parent company Smile Generation.

My oral health has been extremely good my entire life. I don't recall any deep cleanings, and I have had my teeth cleaned twice a year for as long as I can remember- going back to childhood. Dr. Tran refused to "approve" a regular dental cleaning for $59 as advertised. He indicated that he was somehow not ethically able to approve a regular cleaning when a deep cleaning is required. While I was waiting/ wasting more time on a young woman to return with price information, I called my regular dentist's office. I've been going to this excellent dentist for over a decade. However, he's out of network, so he"s more expensive for me, and I am between dental plans right now. In dentistry, you pay for what you get. I asked my regular dentist's open, honest, ethical assistant if I ever had deep cleanings, and she said "only one small area." I do not recall even charged extra for the area. My dentist never presented me with a lengthy dental cleaning bill. Look at my attachments. Examine the advertisement- with no "exceptions" listed at all. Read the lengthy, legalistic contractual style itemized bill they were pressuring me to pay instead of actually practicing patient care. TWO HOuRS in this office without going over my X-rays or receiving a cleaning, This is coming from a woman over 50 who has never had a cavity in her entire life. Caveat emptor!

This is disappointing because, despite everything I'm about to say, my smile is still much better than it was when I first started treatment. When I began orthodontic treatment, I had a severe overbite. I couldn't fully close my mouth, and my bottom teeth were actually wearing down my top teeth. Before agreeing to treatment, I made it very clear that I travel for work and would not be able to come in every month. I was told that this would simply extend my treatment time, but the total cost would remain a little over $2,000. I agreed and enrolled in a payment plan, making my payments whether I could attend appointments or not. There were times when I could only come in once every three months because of work. The treatment plan that was explained to me included braces on my upper teeth for approximately 16 visits and braces on my lower teeth for around 6 visits (I don't remember the exact numbers, but that was the general plan). However, when I made my final payment, Dr. Salas unexpectedly told me I was ready to have my braces removed. I was confused and asked, "What about my bottom braces?" His response was that I didn't need them anymore. At the time, I didn't question it much because I was honestly tired of wearing braces. Looking back, though, I feel like I paid for a treatment plan that I never fully received. My overbite is still present, and I can't help but feel that I paid the full price without receiving the complete treatment that was originally discussed. To make matters worse, after treatment I asked about the teeth whitening I had been told I would receive. Instead of honoring what I understood had been promised, I was told I would have to pay over $100 for it. That only reinforced my feeling that every opportunity was another attempt to charge me more. Dr. Salas was always kind and professional, which is why this experience has been so disappointing. I trusted him and the practice for years, but I left feeling like my concerns were overlooked and that I didn't receive the complete orthodontic treatment I expected after paying in full. Based on my experience, I can no longer recommend City Smiles Dental & Orthodontics or Portal Family Dentistry & Orthodontics. First of all, Jill, the treatment coordinator is awesome! She's so caring, thoughtful, and really made us feel she is for us. She got my MIL in a plan to get her teeth fixed so she could eat comfortably by this Thanksgiving. So thoughtful. Dr John Varghese is not only highly intelligent, but he clearly shows he cares about his patients. He patiently went through each step of the plan to get my MIL's teeth back to normal so she could enjoy life in her late 80's. I liked them so much I too switched to them and got my first X-rays and cleaning. I have issues with grinding my teeth and it's getting to the point where I needed to assess what I need to do to protect my teeth so that I can still use them as I get older. They drew a plan out with what options might be best to tackle my case and I appreciate knowing all the pros and cons of my decision and being informed of the process. I have held back from leaving a review for many years, but as I continue to work and spend…read morethousands on rectifying the work done, I feel responsible to do this. Eight years after walking into this office, I can look back and be certain that walking in was one if not the worst decision of my life. Teeth are precious and not only tools for chewing--they're part of an interconnected system involving digestion, posture, emotions, energy, and overall vitality. This practice doesn't focus on any of that but surely has a strong focus to sell. I worked with 3 different dentist's here; I was young and said yes to everything: frequent cleanings and all the upsell that comes with that, many fillings, crowns, 3 root canals, and even more! I thought I was being responsible. One of the main things to highlight is, absolutely ALL of the crowns were left with a margin. I learned over the years by asking questions that same day crowns are typically found in chain practices where the doctor is not the one molding and the staff is not always well equipped. This was absolutely true. I can think of a time where I removed the molding for the assistant myself(of course I did it wrong). I visited another dentist during that time who did a 3D scan. That doctor warned me of the margin on a particular tooth. I went back to this practice and Dr. Lising minded. She insisted that the crown was fine. That was on a root canal so I didn't feel discomfort, yet the crown fell off on a random day. Sadly it was too late-there was significant decay underneath and the tooth had to be shaved down significantly. Dr. Lising was not pleasant to work with during this time. As I read on many other recent reviews, I also experienced the arrogance. She laughed at my hesitation to "fix" the issue. I agreed to placing a dental post to then place a new crown. Sadly, the post caused the tooth to break and led to an infection that showed while pregnant. I had to have an extraction while pregnant and an implant months later. This costed me several thousands. On a different occasion, I complained of sensitivity on a particular tooth and was told that I needed a root canal. With what I know now, I can say that it was called too early. All I did was say that it was sensitive, that's it. Root canals are bad news and I just extracted a second one. The recovery was brutal. I have one to more to go. Another experience was an onlay that fell off 4 times before it never moved again- I don't know how that was accomplished. If I could go back, I would want my young self to read this review and be intrigued to read on functional/biological dentistry. You will find a doctor who will cost you a bit more per visit but a whole lot less over time, a Dr. that will care to save your teeth. I do not have any pleasure in leaving this review, in fact it is hard but I feel a strong need to. I have spent thousands of dollars over the last 4 years to redo all the work that I have paid for in the past! It is painful in every way and I don't wish it on anyone. If you are looking for a dentist, please be kind to yourself and look for a Dr that will care for you from a functional perspective and educate you while saving your teeth.

UPDATE: I went and sought out a 2nd opinion...since Fort bend Dental Aliana didn't want to help me…read morethe same day...This new dentist evaluated Dr. Barrata's work...it wasn't the adhesive that was the issue....Barrata didn't cut real tooth enough for crown to sit on with good grip...so crown has a wabble effect and caused the crown to fall off.....it wasn't the adhesive...it's that the tooth that the crown sits on wasn't cut small enough for the. -- Initially I thought it was a good place, I only got tooth cleaning done. So, I provided a good review. It takes time to get to know how this organization operates. I had to go back in for a tooth issue where I needed a crown. This is when I started realizing they are not doing something correct. Vinny Barrata is assigned to me as my dentist, he seemed like he knows what he is doing. Anyways, he worked on a tooth of mine..he shaved off the cracks and sized it to set a crown on. Initially had a temporary crown for a couple of weeks while I waited to get my new crown. The problems began after getting my new crown. Note: I have experience with 4 other crowns now been set in my mouth for over 5 years. But the crown that Dr. Barrata did, first try the crown that Barrata set, it popped out in two weeks. I had to go back. Second time, Barratta put a new crown in popped out in 11 months, so I went back recently, Barrata again worked on it...I told him I thought it was the adhesive. But he chose to go the route of using a backup crown that he ordered, and put it on...he still chose to use old adhesive and new crown.. Personally, i told him if he's using the same adhesive, I don't think it will fix it...later the same day in the evening I was having dinner, just eating rice and it popped out again...that's 3 times a crown popped out worked on my tooth by Dr. Barrata. I called the Aliana dental folks asking for help today and they rejected to help me stating Barratta is at another office and the dentist Lana on site cannot assist...so basically saying to me that you need to wait for Dr. Barrata...while I suffer with a jagged tooth. This company operates like a ma and pop shop. The help who was assigned to my case, I found that Dr. Barratta was letting her shave the new crown. I asked the help are you dentist...cuz I was like why is she shaving my tooth...shouldn't a licensed professional be shaving my tooth....she was not a licensed profession...she was Barrata's help basically...when I accused her of not being a dentist...that's immediatly when Barrata stepped it. What I discovered is these dentists that work here 100% empower help/unlicesend folks to pick up some of the work dentists should ideally be doing. Immidiatly Barrata started working on my tooth after I accused the non licensed person of not being a dentist and why she was working on my crown saving and shaping....so messed up. Anyways, same day after Barrata put in a new crow FOR THE 2nd time, he cannot get it right the first time apparantly...same evening a 3rd time my crown fell out while eating rice. I called next morning to get appointment...they were forcing me to wait another day to work with Dr. Barrata...and they kept saying they want to use the same adhesive...but here I am struggling with the back of my toungue cutting up against a shaved tooth since there is no crown....they make me suffer until Barrata gets back to the Richmond location from the Rosenburg location...they asked me to go to the Rosenberg location...but the office manager asked me...I said I cannot, I work from home and they seem to not understand that I have work...going back for fallen crown repeatedly is unaccepted...3 times worked on my by Barrata..I had to go back...they do care I'm sufferring..would not let me see the other dentist on site named Lana. Anyways, I am never going back to this location.....they are kind of getto...and will be advising folks to stay clear of this dental organization going forth. Barrata doesn't know how to keep a crown glued on past 11 months in my experience. Buyer be aware is all.

We're only starting and my particular issue may require many visits. Things of note, the place is clean and in this covid era, fairly strict about Covid procedures. It makes sense, cause you're gonna have to be unmasked in order to have your teeth worked on. They do seem to have state of the art technology compared to my last dentist at Lovett. (I didn't have anything against Lovett Dental, just my employer changed all my insurance and the old dentist wasn't on their dental plan.) It does have a lux feel, which is kinda ridiculous, but would be soothing to those who fear dentists. The first time I watched Netflix in between a bunch of X-Rays during an emergency visit. The next time I just had music on the background. Like again, you don't really need it, it's over the top, but I can see how it would help people. In this one X-Ray chair they had a large plastic tooth and inside lots of toys for kids. So, they would seem to know how to deal with kids. I liked my particular dentist, though I forgot his name. Argh! He was funny, and blunt, which is what I appreciated. He told me only an orthodontist should attempt to remove a certain wisdom tooth I have and no responsible one would. That type of real, did jive well with me. I'm hoping my partiuclar issues will be addressed, as it's only the beginning stages, but so far so good.
