Realize that Aspen Dental is a huge dental company that operates in 33 states with over 500 franchises. A CEO oversees the entire operation. Upon first visit to Aspen Dental it's pretty obvious these guys exist to milk as much money as they can from both your insurance company and your personal pocket. First, they will not do x-rays and a cleaning in the same appointment for first time patients. This means you will waste almost an hour on the first visit just to get X-rays. You will have to come back for a cleaning. Why? Aspen Dental states that they must determine if you need a "regular" cleaning or a "deep" cleaning. Most insurances cover regular cleanings, but will not cover deep cleanings. You pay extra, out of pocket for deep cleanings. If you want to learn more about deep cleanings, google search more info on deep cleanings to see how they've become a cash grab at questionable dental practices. Secondly, the way the visit is arranged, you can easily tell that Aspen Dental is interested in making the most money from your dental experience. After your meeting with the doctor, you wait again to talk to a "billing specialist". Not the receptionist...a billing specialist. The specialist is there to outline all the work they recommend you need done, and tell you of all the additional costs that exist that your insurance will not pay for. Deep cleaning. Extra. Fluoride treatment. Extra. If they recommend any major work, don't worry they finance, so you don't have to pay all at once. That should be a major, major red flag right there. Finally, I encourage you to google Aspen Dental and class action lawsuits. The New York Attorney General has gone after them and settled in 2015. Frontline did an expose on them in 2012. The Pennsylvania Attorney General's office settled with them in 2010. They're all over, so they are easy to access, however I highly, highly recommend finding a local dentist who will care about you, your teeth, your well being and not just your dollars. read more

Had a very negative-and concerning-experience. I called and scheduled an urgent emergency appointment for significant pain and swelling. I spoke to an Aspen employee and the scheduled me for this location as an option with same- day availability. This location is about 20 mins from me so I had already left when they called and cancelled it saying it was cancelled because of a lack of information as they were unsure about payment and reason. I had discussed all of this in detail with the call center so I am not sure what happened. They said that even after providing all of this information again, they would not keep this appointment it was "double booked" and I can't be seen for 6 days. This is by the far the worst Dentist office I have ever been forced to interact with. I have stayed with them for the past 3 years out of pure laziness (finding new providers under insurance sucks!). In that time, the office staff have been rude almost every time I have interacted with them. The office manager once turned me away from my appointment, because their automatic system emailed AND texted me the wrong appointment time, and I arrived 10 minutes prior to that time (20 minutes late, according to them). Their "automatic" systems does not work. I confirmed my appointment via text last Thursday and received a call on Friday requesting "verbal confirmation" during my work hours. When I called them back on Saturday, they were closed and had CANCELLED my appointment that would take SIX months or more to reschedule. I will thank them for this, because it was finally the motivation I needed to find an office that answers the phone, is polite and courteous, has an automatic system that works, and listens when you request additional services such as teeth whitening. Beware of this place! Aspen cancelled TWO appointments and failed to tell me prior to my arrival at the office. One was cancelled because they knew they did not have paperwork, failed to follow up as they stated they would, and only called me 10 minutes prior to the appointment to tell me that they had just received it but to still come into the office. When I arrived, Keith (said he was the office manager) explained they had to cancel because the doctor did not have time to review the paperwork. I had already taken off work for the procedure and was turned away because of their poor management. For the second one, staff called me on a Monday at 5:15pm (appointment was next day at 2:30pm) and informed me payment for unrelated services was due prior to completing the cleaning that I had already paid for. I explained I was disputing that billing. She asked if I wanted to cancel my appointment and I stated no. She said that she would speak to her manager and call back in the morning. I received no call and so I showed up at my scheduled time to learn that they cancelled the appointment AGAIN and did not inform me of such. This is poor customer service and cost me travel time plus time off of work TWICE. As to billing, they do not update your insurance benefits and give you incorrect insurance "estimates" and tell you prior to the procedure that your insurance will cover the procedures and give an insurance discount for what is not covered. However, months after your procedure, you will receive a bill for anything insurance did not cover due to their failure to properly verify benefits. They claim that it is only estimates so they can charge you after for more, but had they correctly verified benefits prior to the procedure, the costs would be known upfront. I believe they do what they do to conceal how much they will actually charge you later when it is too late. Also, if you pay for a service (which I paid for my cleaning up front) that money does not actually go to the cleaning as you are told it would but is held in your account with them as a credit and they apply it to any bills including those in dispute. Aspen is a corporation who prioritizes profit of customer service, hides their fees, and cancels appointments whenever they want. I was supposed to receive a call from the regional manager today but as suspected, I did not. I have cancelled all future appointments with them and if I were you, I would NEVER go there. Over an hour past my scheduled time, I was shuffled from one room to another and told to "wait" at every stop; each time staff finally appeared, they left again with no explanation, punctuating the visit with long, uncomfortable silences. The few interactions I did have were rude and unprofessional--at one point I overheard employees joking about calling out "sick" the next day. To top it off, they quoted an outrageous price for a simple cleaning and couldn't even keep my diagnosis straight, giving me different answers about my dental health depending on whether I was talking to a doctor or the receptionist. BE EXTREMELY WARY & STRONGLY CONSIDER GOING ELSEWHERE. I chipped a tooth while traveling and ended up scheduling an appointment because they were the dentist that could see me the soonest upon returning . So as a new customer I needed to have an exam and x-rays before they would consider doing any work. I'll deal. I wanted to get things moving. (Under normal circumstances I wouldn't have considered going to a chain dentist.) After the x-rays the dental hygienist comes in to "do a gum exam" (or similar). At the end I'm told I have gingivitis. I'm shocked. My gums don't bother me. They're not inflamed, swollen, red, bleeding, any of the things. She tells me that before they will do any work on my chipped tooth I need to take care of the gingivitis. I meet with a billing specialist that informs me of the 'treatment plan that includes orthodontic work. (I've had braces already and will be foregoing that recommendation.) Oh, but they offer financing! (Insert sarcasm.) It'll be $417 for the cleaning/gingivitis treatment which I hesitantly schedule because internally I'm distraught over my tooth and anxious to move the process forward. Unfortunately for Aspen Dental I had an appointment with another dentist later that day which I initially planned on cancelling but figured I'd go for the sake of a second opinion/alternate quote. The dentist confirmed I do NOT have gingivitis. Why would Aspen Dental tell me I did? While I can't confirm their motives, I also can't possibly trust anything they tell me moving forward. When I called to cancel my appointment and to get a refund the receptionist told me 'you don't have gingivitis, we're treating your inflamed gums'. Right. That wasn't what the hygienist told me. Absolute horrible customer service unless you are a new patient. They will make existing patients sit well past their appointment time in order to get new patients in a chair. They also make you have an appointment for everything and sometimes break it into more than one appointment. They have no concept that people have jobs. Warning for those with queazy stomach...When my husband got teeth removed for his dentures they pulled the teeth, slapped a temporary denture in over the holes and sent him home. We had thought there would be gauze, but no. He didn't even make it home before blood was leaking out of his mouth. I went in with a tooth ache, was suspenses to be a dentist that took my insurance. It felt like a used car dealer trying to squeeze more money out of me than was needed. They dazzled me with these xrays that where supposed to be part of the consultation visit then tried to charge me for them saying they where not covered by my insurance. At my first visit, I waited for almost an hour before being called in for x-rays and then sent off, because apparently they didn't mark down that I asked for a cleaning. I had to come back for another appointment. At the next appointment, they gave me an exam and fixed a cavity, but told me I would need to come back for my cleaning as there wasn't time. I was shuffled from room to room before I was seen by two different people. I call it a room, but the ceilings don't go all the way up between some of the examining chairs so it's very noisy and I could hear all the work going on in the next seat. There is definitely an impersonal vibe. They tried to charge me for the filling twice (at the beginning and again at the end of the appointment), but luckily, I caught the mistake. I decided to take my x-rays and see a new dentist because I don't trust them. They are unorganized and make mistakes. I went to aspen dental today for the first time, and was told I would receive a cleaning. After waiting for over an hour to see anyone, I got X-rays taken and was told that I had a small cavity and would not receive a cleaning that day. All of that was fine, but then when I went to schedule my cleaning and cavity filling, I was told there are no openings until MID JUNE. It's early December. The woman scheduling with me made no apologies for wasting my time, as I had spent two hours there to only get x rays and be examined for a total of 20 minutes. She told me there was only one dental hygienist and that was that, no appointments until June. I pointed out that this information would have been helpful to know when I originally made the appointment, as I obviously wouldn't have come to aspen dental when I'm overdue for a cleaning if I had known that they have a 6 month wait period for dental cleanings right now. She was entirely unapologetic and said that she can't control what the call center (which makes initial appointments) tells me. As I can see the owner of this business reads reviews, my advice to your business would be to make it abundantly clear, perhaps in the phone calls made when appointments are confirmed in the days before they are scheduled for, that you do not have the staffing to do cleanings in a timely manner. While you'll obviously lose potential new patients this way, attempting to trick people into coming in just to waste people's time like this will also lose you patients, AND earn you more 1-star reviews. read more

I called for an appointment due to a broken tooth and needing other work done. The receptionist was immediately accommodating and for me in for the next day. She was even able to accommodate my work schedule. The next day when I arrived early, I checked in and was seen almost immediately. Again, the receptionist who checked me in was courteous and accommodating. I was first seen by an x-ray technician who was personable and professional. She took images of my teeth with the rotating x-ray machine as well as the localized stagnant imager as well. I was then asked to wait in a different room where the dentist was about to me. Again, I waited a small amount of time and then the dentist came in with an assistant. He looked at my teeth, verbalized notes to the assistant and then left. Both were personable and accommodating. I was asked to wait in the waiting area where the office manager went over financing. She explained it expertly and thoroughly. We scheduled appointments and she was actually able to squeeze me in for an immediate appointment that night! The dental hygienist that I saw also did a great job of explaining the procedures she was about to do. She explained aftercare procedures thoroughly as well. When I was finished I saw The office manager again. Upon leaving, I saw the dentist, who shook my hand. My experience was wonderful. I was greeting by professional and courteous employees the whole visit. I would highly recommend this office to anyone who wants a great experience at the dentist. read more

I originally booked an appointment at Aspen Dental for tooth sensitivity. I was a previous client in a different city and when I came to this office I was told I needed new x-rays. I urged them to get my previous x-rays from the other office, they said they did, but the x-rays I needed were different and I didn't have them done. I paid out of pocket for the same x-rays I got at the other office. After getting my x-rays done I waited in a room for exactly 40mins till I had to stand up and ask the front desk about the doctor. It took two seconds for the doctor to enter and tell me I needed extensive work costing me thousands of dollars. All they care about is money and up charging you. They did not spend enough time on me to determine I needed that much work. My appointment lasted about 80 mins with only 15 mins of real service time. The majority of my time in the office was wasted waiting. Will not be returning! I don't plan on using Aspen Dental after this experience. read more

I went in with a severe toothache. My first appointment was very positive and they told me I would need to schedule a root canal or extraction which they would do for me. I told them I had to call back. Although I didn't call right away, when i did call their systems were down but I was able to get more antibiotics called in. I called again a few days later and the girl took my information and said the office manager would call me back. I never got that call. I called back again and spoke to Emily ( she was extremely helpful and understanding.) She scheduled my appointment and when i told her how much pain I was in and if i could get something stronger for pain she said she would check into it and get back to me . This was on Friday. I called again at 11 because I knew they were closing at 1 and Emily promised I would get a call back from the dentist. I never received that call. AT this point, I am in agony and extremely frustrated so I call the emergency line. I had to call 3 times for anyone to even call me back.. Hours later i get a voicemail from Dr. Woo who basically said no to anymore antibiotics and no to anything other than ibuprofen. After dealing with constant runaround and being in so much pain I let Dr. Woo know I was angry and hung up. I am sure anyone would feel the same way. Not that i am justifying my reaction. Fast forward Monday: Dr. Woo makes the receptionist Emily call me to tell me Dr. Woo is uncomfortable removing my tooth because of the phone call we had. I asked Emily if i could speak to Dr. Woo in person so I could apologize and explain the events that led up to that moment. Dr. Woo refused. I was completley Shocked and now my treatment was even more delayed. Dr. Woo is completely unprofessional and cruel for her decision and I will never step foot in those offices again. read more

I went to Aspen Dental for a check up and cleaning. Even though I asked a ton of questions on the phone, no one told me they would only x ray and there would be no cleaning. That is apparently a separate appointment once you agree to their terms. The girl did a lot of x-rays and I knew I needed work. The Dentist didn't even look in my mouth for 10 seconds. He looked at one tooth and studied the x rays. Then informed me (very indifferently) that I needed a bunch of root canals and two partials. I was shocked. When I asked the likelihood root canals would last in very restored teeth he said, then that I would need 6 extractions and the partials. Then I was ushered out to the girl at the desk who immediately wanted to run my credit report. The Dentist wrote down that I needed $15 K in dental work. I didn't allow her to run my credit and found the whole thing very rushed. I went to another Dentist recently and the result is that I have 2 cavities that need filling and one bad tooth needs a root canal or extraction. I waited to write this report to see what a different Dental office would say. Aspen Dental is obviously making a lot of money off insurance and people with shock tactics. Sure in a perfect world I could get partials but it is not necessary at this point. Not to mention that I was never asked what I wanted or could afford. I later read more reviews about them and found the complaints alarming. Including that the partials the customers bought were of a very poor quality. I will never go back there. read more

Friendly staff and a great environment. I went here for a couple years and eventually got 3 crowns. They recommended a root canal but the doctor they referred me to said I didn't need it. Each crown I got required a temporary while the crown was being made. Each temporary fell out right away, no matter how careful I was. I got tired of going back, so I just lived without the temps while the crowns were made (a few days). I got tired of poor service. I really felt like I was on an assembly line here. When I went to a different dentist he wasn't satisfied with the quality of one of the crowns. He eventually came out and said it was shoddy work. I went back to Aspen with an x-ray of the tooth and they agreed to replace it no charge. There was no apology but they admitted it wasn't done correctly. read more

I was a new patient with a broken tooth. I made an appointment for a week away, but the pain was too much. This morning I showed up as a walk in hoping for some help. The staff was courteous and almost immediately got me in for a consult. I was worried I'd have to come back to get it fixed. Sure enough I had to, the same day a mere few hours later. The day of my operation the nurse that was supposed to take my vital's never came in, the doctor didn't care and proceeded to remove my teeth with a pair of pliers, no i am not kidding, as an EMT i have never seen this kind of degradation to a patient or lack of care for my quality of life let alone how much pain he put me through. (he only gave me three shot's of Novocaine for the removal of over 10 teeth, i was abused for the first few year's of my life but this top's the cake, i would rather go back to getting beaten and threatened to be stabbed if not actually stabbed than go through this experience again) So while he is removing my teeth with pliers,and no anesthesia, my doctor decides this is a good time to "Talk shit" about me to the nurse, he said looking me in the face while i was fully conscious and i quote "he must smoke meth if he needs this many teeth removed", What a way to make an abused and used life worse, degrade and insult the patient while your ripping out his teeth so he cant respond. But it's the story's not over yet. It's been over three month's and i am still digging pieces of my teeth out of my gum's, taking a dremel tool to the "dentures" (if you could call them that), and arguing with yet another bill collector over "consultation" and "maintenance" fee's and when i asked if i could get some anti-antibiotic's i was promptly told to see a doctor... Now I am talking to lawyer i cant afford (if i could have afforded it i would have went to an ACTUAL DENTIST), left the EMS and firefighting service because if the state didn't take enough advantage of the volunteer EMS and Firefighting service, the people and family's you try to help are my likely to sue you and stab you in the back than simply utter the words "thank you" and finally i cant eat, sleep, talk, or breath without pain, let alone ever take a woman on a date for the rest of this horrible life because i went to this hellhole. take my advice and GO TO A REAL DENTIST read more

My insurance company listed Aspen as a provider. Their web site says they are accepting new appointments for every dentist listed. I talked with an Aspen rep on the phone and made an appointment. I had to make a second visit trying to sort out insurance. I had to call the Aspen rep and had him on the phone. When I went to the desk with him on the line a woman behind the desk come over and got in my face. She practically yelled at me, told me they were not accepting new customers, and was generally rude. I have been a patient at aspen dental for many many years. Since 2018 they have gone down hill. They cancel your apt and don't call you. They even move your apt time and don't call you to tell you. The staff is not knowledgeable about billing. Worse of all the new dentist in the office are so incompetent. I had a root canal and crown prep, I have been there 4 times for the crown prep because they can't complete it correctly. They temporary secured my perm crown in and of course it falls out so I make an apt to get it out back in, I get there and they have no idea why I'm there and they make me wait for 1 hour. Dentist didn't come in till 5:50 and then had the audacity to tell me they close in 2 minutes and pretty much tough luck. My favorite part is being told I have an infected root canal and go find a dentist who can do a retreatment. Didn't give me abx or anything and my face blew up. Had to call and beg for abx. Needless to say after they fix my crown for the 6th time I will be leaving this office for good. read more

I woke up in the middle of the night with a random, horrible toothache, and was able to get in the next day at noon. It was determined that I MIGHT need a root canal. First of all, the staff had trouble looking up my insurance. I said it was fine if I paid out of pocket, but they went above and beyond to call my insurance company and get my plan information. Serious props to them. After my appointment, they called their other location with specialists, and found out the doctor had an opening for 3pm that same day to get my root canal done. With my insurance the procedure was still going to cost me $600, which I couldn't afford outright, so they set me up with the payment plan. At 3 I went to their other location and had my route canal done. The doctor was incredibly friendly and super helpful. I didn't have any problems during my procedure, which felt like it lasted barely an hour, and I have no complaints. The staff seriously went above and beyond to help me and do everything they could for me. The fact that they got me in to that slot they happened to have open was so fantastic to me. So now instead of having to wait weeks, in tons of pain, for an appointment, my procedure is already done and I just need to go to follow-up appointments for my crown. The staff really, honestly cared about helping me, and they were all so friendly. I guess if I had one complaint it would be that they took a LOT of x-rays, but I haven't had them done for my whole mouth in a long time, so I'm glad I have those on file and can have them sent to my regular dentist. I'm completely happy with my experience and I'm sure getting my crown impression next week, then whenever it comes in, will be fine. The existence of the payment plans is unbelievably helpful. Dental work can cost RIDICULOUS amounts of money, it makes me so happy that finally there's options to make everything affordable. I'm lucky and have insurance through my job, otherwise all of this would have cost me $2,400 out of pocket. But again, they have the payment plan! I'll probably be mostly returning to my regular dentist for my checkups and whatnot, but I will always recommend Aspen to people. I went there because in July, when my girlfriend was visiting, she had a sudden abscess pop up and was suffering with horrible tooth pain. Turned out SHE needed a root canal too - she wound up getting hers later with her regular dentist, but Aspen was able to see her right away and give her an exam and xrays to diagnose the problem, all for free because she was a new patient. I had a horrible experience at this office,They added hidden charges in my financing and have you sign your agreement on the opposite side of the computer on a key pad so you can't see what their doing. They charged me 488.00 they say to clean 6 teeth that I never agreed to or had done. They just added the fees into my financing as something I wouldn't be able to recognize and they were running a special for a complete cleaning for a entire mouth of teeth for $80.00 with 20% off. They are dishonest and lie. The doctor there was unable to complete the work to my satisfaction. It was a terrible ordeal and there corporate office are as dishonest as there dental offices. Oh my goodness! Dr. Rhinehorn is THE most unprofessional dentist I have ever seen in my life! Wow! Along with 2 of his office staff instigators Terry and Office Manager Justina. Rude, unprofessional, possess zero empathy, discourteous and outrageous! Not to mention the ridiculously long wait times! Do they really think the TV's in the rooms help?! People have lives! And hectic ones! We work, we have children we have to do lists and other responsibilities! The very last thing I want to do is sit in the dentist office all day on my day off! I moved from Virginia to Albany. I called for an appointment for regular cleaning. The staff was helpful and I was able to schedule an appointment at my desirable date. After going to my appointment I waited more the 90 minutes until I was called. They took x-rays and then I was taken to next room where a dental hygienist checked my teeth. After few minutes the dentist showed up and quickly checked the x-rays and my teeth and was told to wait at the waiting area. After long wait I was finally called and one of the staff gave me an estimate for the work that I needed. I was told that I need deep cleaning and it will cost my around 1900 out of pocket on top of what my insurance will be charged. And that is all after all the discounts. I was disappointed for many reasons: 1- The waiting time at the office was very long and not acceptable. 2- No one told me at the beginning that what are the planning to do and what should I expect. They took me from room to room. 3- The price was way TOO MUCH. I declined the service because I couldn't afford it and I took a bus back to Virginia to my old dentist where she cleaned my teeth with no out of pocket cost.
