I recently had a minor foot surgery there. Comparing surgery centers that I have experienced these folks have it together ! No worries.

Recently, on a Sunday evening, after our daily walk, she complained of unbearable pain in her lower left back. We called the Moraga-Orinda paramedics and they showed up in 3 minutes! She was given pain killers and rushed to John Muir Hospital in Walnut Creek, the closest location for us. At John Muir Emergency Department, she was attended to immediately. The physician, Dr. Kessler, after examining her, immediately opined that it looks like kidney stone! He ordered a CT Scan and a medium to large size kidney stone was confirmed. Dr. Kessler prescribed pain killer, necessary medication and admitted her since the pain was unbearable for her to handle at home. Krystal and Kamala was the first nurse-team we had. They were both excellent, caring and compassionately attended to my wife as often as needed even during the night. After seeing the excruciating pain, they arranged an urologist consulting and a decision was made to do a Ureteroscopy and blast the stone into small fragments/dust. Since this procedure was done only at the Concord location of John Muir, my wife was transported by an excellent ambulance team to Concord location. In Concord, she was given excellent care by RN Mary and RN Emmeline - they were really amazing! My wife needed help often, and the nurses never ever complained (even at night) and helped my wife with a cheerful smile every time! The next two days, she was given outstanding care by Dr. Khan and the nursing team of Sarah and Benjamin. Sarah is very knowledgeable, competent, very compassionate, cheerful and friendly. She followed the protocol strictly for every care-activity and her attention to detail was amazing. For example, she had to check my wife's blood glucose regularly. Every time, Sarah would poke the finger, remove the first drop of blood the comes out with a gauze (since the first drop was in contact with the needle), press the finger to get the next drop and use it to test blood glucose! And, Sarah was training a student nurse and she was painstakingly describing every step of every procedure in great detail to the student while taking excellent care of my wife. The urologist, Dr. Chang, was very friendly, and explained to wife the details of the procedure. His attention to detail was also amazing. Since the kidney stone was in the lest ureter, he used a marker on my wife left leg to highlight that it is the left ureter! The Nurse practitioner from his office, Vivian, scheduled the surgery and communicated with us daily. She showed real concern and empathy for my wife's ordeal. The procedure was successful and the excruciating pain stopped almost immediately afterwards. Dr. Chang had written a detailed description of every step of the procedure in my wife's My Chart - it was comforting to read the detailed report. She was discharged the next day. The care my wife received from the Doctors and Nurses at John Muir Hospital in Walnut Creek and Concord was consistently excellent - the quick/initial diagnosis at ER, confirmation through CT Scan, excellent execution of the procedure by the Urologist and the awesome care she received from the Nursing Team after the procedure - all outstanding! We have lived in Contra Costa County for over thirty years and have had treatments at John Muir Hospital a few times and we experienced excellence every time! We highly recommend John Muir Hospitals and their outstanding team of Physicians and Nurses.

I have never written a review about a physician before, but I'm so frustrated by both Dr. Cheung and her office and this is a bit cathartic. I've seen Dr. Cheung three times over the past ~3 months for the same problem. She's never been a warm physician, but she has transitioned to being outright rude and dismissive. First of all, her office is extremely unprofessional. There is one really nice person, but overall they have been extremely difficult to work with. Whenever I have called the office to schedule appointments, they have never once picked up. Never a single time. For my first appointment, they did call me back quickly and it was generally fine. But for appointments #2 and #3, they often didn't even call me back. To schedule appointment #3, I had to call them 7 times over the course of 10 days. I didn't get a single call back until I messaged Dr. Cheung herself in the patient portal and told her what was happening. Second, I'm the type that really likes to see test results before seeing a physician, because I read everything carefully and then can ask better questions. But Dr. Cheung's office refused to release the results of my overnight sleep study. They said it's their policy to not release results and instead require an appointment. I mentioned to them that they are required to give me the results under HIPAA and they still refused, saying it's their policy that they don't give the results. When I eventually had my third appointment, I mentioned this to Dr. Cheung and she defended it as their policy that they don't give the patient the results and they were right not to give me my results, requiring an appointment first. She was incredibly rude and dismissive about it, giving me some analogy about cancer patients (this is a really minor issue, so I found it a bizarre and insensitive analogy). She also told me that the reports are very complex and I wouldn't understand them, which is (a) not the case and (b) very patronizing. The irony is that she clearly didn't read the report before my appointment and was just skimming during the appointment. If they would have given it to me ahead of time, at least one of us would have read it. If you have the choice to go anywhere else for a pulmonologist, I recommend you do that. I wish I had read the reviews before I took the referral to go to Dr. Cheung.

The specialists are great. If it weren't for the specialists, I would rate this with 1 star. Superb…read morespecialists that I have seen. BUT... for Primary Care, that's another story--all calls are routed through a call center. (The specialists are not.) I needed to contact my PCP for urgent but quick questions in recent times related to short-term disability for surgery I just got. My call automatically goes to a call center and my average wait was 15+ minutes just to talk to the call center. Then I have to leave a message for my PCP's office. Then they call back when I'm not available or they write a message in the patient portal. So I have to call back and go through the same thing again. It is an absolutely sucky business model and does not serve the patients. It is a bad patient experience. I gave this feedback to one of the call center people and she gave me a number to call to give feedback there; and then she got kind of defensive on the phone. She should have been more understanding that people are trusting John Muir Health with their health care and all we ask is to speak DIRECTLY to our providers. But John Muir puts a call center there and we NEVER get to speak to the people in the doctor's office directly when we first call in. The only way we can talk DIRECTLY to our primary care practitioners is to receive a call from THEM, AFTER we have left a message with the call center (for which we often must wait 15+ minutes to speak to an agent). And if the doctor's office calls you back and you are not available (since you don't know when they will call you), then you're screwed because you have to return the call again to the call center and go through the same routine of waiting, then leaving another message. I was trying to get a simple message through to my PCP's office regarding my short-term disability and I still do not have it resolved after three days of trying to contact them. John Muir may be saving money by having a call center, but patients are the ones who are getting the shaft of very poor patient experience and stress. The specialists' offices are different--it's been easier to speak to the specialists' staff. But I was told that the primary care doctors ALL have to go through the call center. It slows down service, wastes patients' time, and creates unnecessary stress for patients, especially when we just need a simple question answered. John Muir needs to re-evaluate this call center model. It's not a good one by any stretch. I am seriously considering switching my PCP to a different medical group simply because of the poor patient experience with the call center. I think John Muir really needs to change that business model, stat.

You can't even call your doctor's office directly anymore you're routed through a call center where the person on the phone doesn't know you or your care history. Appointment times keep getting shorter too, sometimes feeling like doctors barely have 10 minutes before they have to rush to the next patient. Healthcare should be about relationships, trust, and time with your doctor. Watching a system that used to be excellent slowly lose those things is really disappointing.
