our healthcare system sucks. Instead of being simply a service that people need like the fire department, it is a for-profit business, like a building contractor. But even for building contractors, there are the ones who provide a quality product, and ones who cut corners; there are ones who communicate well with you and make you feel comfortable asking questions and ones who hold you off at arms distance. Sequoia Surgical Pavilion is like the former. I had surgery done there yesterday. Their first order of business was business. Filling out all the legal and financial paperwork. That's what they have to do in our healthcare system. From there on in everyone treated me with kindness and humanity. The main RN, who dealt with me, I think her name was Katrina, showed her human side, plus her competence, throughout. The same was true for everybody who dealt with me from the woman who shaved my shoulder to the anesthesiologist, who actually had a substantial and interesting conversation with me about matters, not directly relevant to the work, he was going to do. It was another example of making me feel comfortable. And I'm sure he did a competent job, because I didn't die! I will have more to say about the surgeon who operated on me, Dr. Laura Timmerman, in a few days, but so far I am entirely satisfied. Five star rating. One final point: I see some patients here had complaints about their billing department. I cannot comment on that because my entire procedure was covered by my insurance. - medicare plus supplemental insurance. But I did not get any sense that they were trying to get away with anything. Nobody likes to get surgery and it can make some people not so easy to get along with. But pavilion surgical center made the best out of what is inherently a not very pleasant situation. read more

Everyone I encountered during my recent hand surgery was absolutely wonderful. From the start I did feel the initial intake form was a bit invasive asking about v's that should have no bearing on my operation. So I wasn't sure how I was going to be treated declining to answer those questions. Phew! I was still treated like a human being, and the kindness from everyone including Sarah at the front desk all the way to Nurse Karen in recovery made for a painful hand break surgical procedure to be met with reassuring care and attentiveness to my needs and well-being. I do not recommend having surgery at this location. The most traumatic post op I've ever had. First of all, Dr Bader is an amazing surgeon. I've had 2 surgeries done with him. However, the quality of his staff and facility has worsened completely. I will review solely this facility here. I will review separately Golden State Orthopedics (my pre-op visits). I didn't have a good experience at all. I will add that nurse Elizabeth was very sarcastic and other nurses were laughing at me. I had a voice recording of everything that happened. I left my phone to record my entire surgery and post op. The anesthesiologist under sedated me and the pain was excruciating post op. Mind you, I had this hip surgery before. Post op, I'm not supposed to feel feel my entire area for days. I had full sensation as soon as I woke up. I'll add two more things: 1) Even though I was loudly crying and shivering from pain, they refused to give me more than 10 mg of percocet. They told me to call a pain doctor whom I was on hold with while crying and screaming in pain. 2) I was unable to pee for a collective 4 hours (while on IV fluids!) by then; and they refused to put a catheter in until I begged the nurses many times to do that. It took a long time. I had sharp pain in my bladder for a whole day afterwards. Overall, it was the worst experience of my life in a hospital. read more

My wife had foot surgery on March 11 and they charged our credit card $4400 even though we have Blue Shield of California insurance and we had met our annual deductible by then. They did not file the claim with Blue Shield for many weeks and finally when Blue Shield received their claim they immediately sent them $4400 I've called them many times and they will not call me back however I found out through their billing service that they plan on sending us back our $4400 refund in a few weeks Meanwhile we have to deal with credit card charges that should've happened to begin with Really bad service read more

I had an outpatient surgery done here recently and I would have to give them 5 stars for everything I experienced. The place is easy to find, it's super clean, the staff seems to be well trained and knowledgeable. During pre-op, the nurse started my IV without any problems, I had a couple other really friendly nurses come speak with me, including the OR nurse, Trisha, that was going to be in the operating room with me. She helped reassure me instantly about a couple things I was worried about, and she had tons of experience with my surgeon so I felt great about that. Everything ran on time. My surgery was the first of the day, but it was scheduled for 730 and I was literally being wheeled in at 719. In the PACU, my nurse was Kelly and she was wonderful. She was very attentive, knew what I needed before I said anything, and let me rest the majority of the time, which was huge. She was genuinely concerned when I was continuously nauseated, and by the time I left, I had felt like everything was going to be okay. She was the type of nurse I would want any day. Phillip was also someone I want to mention. I think he might be a tech or something there because he helped me during my physical therapy session (he wasn't the physical therapist though, just an assistant) and then he also brought me out to the car on a wheelchair. He was very informative, he always explained everything he was doing, he had a big smile on his face, and seemed like someone the staff could rely on. To be honest, he and the break nurse helped me to the bathroom at one point, and I trusted him much more than the break nurse! The break nurse kept getting everything about my case wrong, like which side and area of my body I had surgery, and Phillip kept correcting him. It was nice someone was paying attention! Anyway, I don't plan to have a bunch of surgeries or anything, but if I had to, I'm super glad I live so close to this surgery center and hope they're here in the future too! read more

For the most part, everything went smoothly. Nurse Kim W and Nurse Bri were wonderful. They were with me while waiting to go in for my surgery with Dr Sacco. My anesthesiologist was super sweet. His name was Yuan. Now the only reason why I ticked one star off is because of one nurse. I don't remember her name but she was helping me get dressed when I was being discharged. During this time, this particular nurse was telling to go to P2P Fitness in Concord by Todos Santos as she was helping me get clothes on. I was just absolutely SHOCKED by this. How can a medical professional say this to a patient as you're helping them get dressed. And she continues to go on about it. This is not at all acceptable. I hope the facility can review this and have a word with this nurse about her behavior. read more

BEWARE OF THEIR BILLING PRACTICES! I had a partial knee replacement at this location in April 2022. The surgeon from Golden State Ortho was great and the care I got from the staff was very good at the Pavilion. The problem is the Pavilion's billing department. My case manager at Golden State Ortho confirmed with my insurance ahead of my surgery that my out of pocket expense was going to be $200 based upon my policy and I called my insurance company as well to confirm my out of pocket would be $200. I get my bill and the Pavilions charged me for the hardware they put in my knee (over and above the cost of the surgery!) for an additional $800! So a $200 procedure turned out costing me $1,000!! My case manager at Golden State Ortho indicated she had never heard of such a thing, usually the cost of the surgery includes any hardware they have to use for the procedure. My insurance company agreed it was unusual for the facility to charge "extra" and over and above the surgery for the hardware used, but said it was the way the Pavilions "coded" the procedure which enabled them to charge me for the hardware, which was never revealed to me ahead of time. My insurance company and my case manager from Golden State Ortho tried to talk to the Pavilions to recode the procedure to eliminate the extra charges and the Pavilions refused. Be aware, ask lots of questions of the Pavilions as to what your final bill will be and get an itemization of what they are charging you for BEFORE you do your procedure, or you could be surprised with a large bill you weren't planning on. This was a total lack of transparency and disclosure. (The billing dept. said I should have read the tiny print of the 4-5 page contract while they prepped me for my surgery!) If I had known this ahead of time, I would have chosen to have my procedure in the hospital - which was an option for me. I confirmed that if I had had this procedure in a hospital, it would have been totally covered (minus my $200 deductible) and I would not have been charged for the "parts". I, NOR ANYONE IN MY FAMILY, WILL EVER HAVE A PROCEDURE AT THE PAVILIONS AGAIN AND I WILL NOT RECOMMEND USING THEIR FACILITIES TO ANYONE! read more

Admin/Front Desk: There was only one lady working when I arrived. She was very professional, helpful and polite!! Pre-Op: I had Suzy as my Pre-op nurse. Again, she was professional and polite. She is very good at her job! My Doctor (Dr.Bader- Amazing Doctor A++) was running behind due to his surgery prior to mine being longer than expected. I was already having anxiety Issues but Suzy did a great job at keeping me informed and checking with me/talking which calmed my nerves tremendously. Almost 2 hours after my scheduled start I was taken into the OR. Dr. Ku/Koo (not sure on the spelling) was my anesthesiologist in pre-op who performed my nerve block. Great doctor who took his time to answer any and all questions I had and even explained how the block was performed. OR: since I chose to go without Anesthesia, and just a nerve block, I was awake during the operation/procedure without any sedation. Everyone in the operating room were extremely professional and under the circumstance, I felt at ease and comfortable. Seriously, I've had a lot of different doctors in my 36 years unfortunately. Hands down, Doctor Bader is/was my favorite by far!! He is that rare Doctor that has bedside manor and genuinely cares about his patients. As unfortunate as this injury has been, having him as my surgeon/Doctor has been the silver lining. If you're ever at John Muir with an orthopedic injury, I highly suggest you see if you can request him!! Post Op: So this is where my review got 3 stars rather than 5. The lady/nurse who I had in post op, in my opinion, should probably look into another field of work, something that doesn't require you deal with public/patients/customers. She was rude, flat out. I know the fact that I hadn't eaten anything for about 14-16 hours didn't help. However, the only way I can explain it is by saying she was like the Hitler of Post-Op, minus the German accent and funny little mustache. I'm not going to go into detail or give a name. We are all susceptible to having bad days. It was the end of the day and possibly she was just having a rough day. I was thrilled to be getting out of there. All in all, I was very pleased and impressed with this facility, minus the post op. Keep up the great work!! And post op nurse, Smiles and being nice don't cost a thing, you should give it a try sometime, you'll be amazed at the response you'll get...... read more

The Sequoia Surgical Pavilion is a great place. the staff are all great people. From the receptionists to the nurses, the anesthesiologist and the doctors. when you enter you are greeted with dignity and respect. I have been through the facility three times and each time the atmosphere of respect and concern to give me the best of care has been offered. Every doctor, nurse, and receptionist deserve an applaud. My surgeon Dr. Jaison James did an excellent job to my shoulders, and although it is not my plan to have any other surgery. If needed and I am able to receive the surgery at the Sequoia Surgical Pavilion that's just where I am going! read more

Amazing, professional, clean and wonderful place to have any procedure performed. The staff is the most professional and kind in the world. My anesthesiologist called me the night before to go over everything with me and tell me about eating or drinking before my surgery. Beautiful office/facility. When I arrived I expected to be waiting for quite a while and this was not the case- I was in the actual waiting room no longer than 10min before they took me back and began prepping me for my surgery. While waiting to go back for surgery I was cold in my gown and they brought me 3 steamed blankets one by one. It was so comforting. I got a brand new pair of socks with grippers on the bottom. (Always a plus) This office is run extremely efficiently and they maintain an almost perfect schedule. My doctor and anesthesiologist came by my room beforehand to go over everything with me and to check on how I was doing. Everyone single nurse and doctor was attentive to my every need and answered any question I had thoroughly. This was a procedure I was nervous about going in, but after being there a short while I did not doubt I was in good hands. I felt like the moment I closed my eyes I opened them again and I was done! The nurse I had afterwards made sure that my husband and I understood everything we needed to know for after care before sending us on our way. My nurse watched over me intently for the hour afterward and I didn't feel "left there" on my own. They took me out to my car in a wheelchair once I was good which was so nice. Sequoia Surgical Pavilion - All ready to go - Orthopedists Near Me - Walnut Creek, California

I'm just going to put this right out there at the top of my review- I am a crazy person. I have PTSD, and when I have a flashback I am NOT fun to deal with. I go into fight or flight mode, and I don't know what's going on or where I am. I have, in the past, had the OR team (at another hospital) have to dogpile on me in the operating theatre. Thus, when I was informed that I would be going to the SSP, which I had never visited before, I felt that I should warn the staff ahead of time. This turned out to be a lot easier than normal because they are awesome. First of all, they called me to make sure everything was being done right to prep me for surgery. The nice woman I spoke to on the phone had a great sense of humor and readily joked with me, which put me at ease. I told her all about my PTSD and what to watch out for. She thanked me profusely and took a lot of notes. Then the anesthesiologist called me the night before my surgery. How awesome is that? I also told him all about my little problem, and he listened. On the day of the surgery, I was only in the waiting room for about 10 minutes, tops. The surgeon, Dr Timmerman, came by and made sure I was set up for the right procedure, and also took a moment to reassure me. She also did this in the prep area. Major bonus- her surgical cap had penguins printed on it. The staff listened to me and let me take my Sensei along with me into prep. I told them that it was best and safest for all if he was with me for every moment that I was conscious, both before and after surgery, as he knew how to handle me. This, they allowed. They put the IV in the exact spot I told them to, which saved everyone a lot of frustration- my veins can be downright infuriating. I told the anesthesiologist "drug me like a horse. Don't mess around- I should be out before I'm ever in the operating room," and he sure did just that! I saw my surgeon rushing by and yelled "PENGUINO, PENGUINO," at her, told me Sensei that I loved him, and then I was out cold. In recovery everyone was understanding and compassionate and they also kept their distance. Really smart, since I was freaking out, trying to hurl myself off the gurney, and trying to bite my Sensei in the stomach, haha. He managed me fine, the staff managed me fine, they got me to Sensei's car no problem, and a couple days later I got a "get well" card hand-signed by everyone who was involved in my procedure. How sweet is that? Also, no signs of staph. Always a pretty major bonus after going in for surgery, know what I mean? read more

I recently had hip surgery. My excellent experience started before I ever arrived as I was called prior by staff nurses including anestition to go over upcoming procedure. On the morning I arrived I was immediately escorted back and my wife was told she could comeback shortly. Once back in prep everyone cameby and introduced themselves and insured I was comfortable. When I woke in recovery to go home my was brought back and we were given my clothes and escorted out. I was called the next day to insure there were no issues as well as my well being. Today I received a Get Well Card signed by all. Thank you all for a job well done. read more

Front desk and pre-op staff was nice and professional, they made us feel comfortable and kept us informed. The real issue was post-op staff. They really need to realize what business they are in. We felt like in a fast food place getting rushed out with terrible service. They won't listen or tend to the patient and were very careless. The patient was barely able to stand up and despite that we were "shipped" out on a wheel chair within less than an hour of the surgery. We have never felt this frustrated and disappointed with after care in a situation like this. read more

I was sick and vomiting and she actually yelled at me and was SO mean to me and made me feel worse. She told me I made a mess but she wouldn't get me anything to vomit in. She ruined it. I had a great experience at Sequoia Surgical Pavilion. I underwent Achilles Tendon Rupture repair surgery this past week. The anesthesiologist (Dr. Yuan) called me the night before to brief me on what would happen and give me instructions on eating and drinking prior to the procedure. (I would be receiving general anesthetic.) On the day of the surgery, everyone was very nice, professional and comforting. They gave me a nerve block for my leg and started the general anesthetic. From my standpoint, the surgery took 500 milliseconds... Suddenly I was in the recovery room and my wife was standing by. I received a thank you note, signed by the nurses and anesthesiologist, three days later by mail. Pretty great...! read more

This was my first surgery and I could not be more grateful for the experience! A surgery center can feel pretty impersonal I would imagine but this friendly and comforting staff made me feel individualized and gave personable and efficient care. I was visited by my own surgeon and the anesthesiologist prior to surgery who were willing and able to answer all my questions. The nurses were extremely friendly and knowledgeable and chatted with me while I nervously waited. My recovery thus far is much easier than I had anticipated after having a full sinus surgery. I've been meaning to post about Sequoia since my 12/1/11 shoulder arthroscopy. This is a very nice, efficient facility in all respects. Very close to John Muir Hospital too (which made me feel there was a backstop if everything went kittywampus). I will also observe that the propofol anesthesia they use now is far better than the old stuff. I'm truly sorry Michael Jackson died from way too much of it, but it is nothing to fear. It's a clean instant light sleep and no side effects I could see. If you get that funky nerve blocker in your neck (shoulder surgery), make sure they dunk you fast - the heavy chest feeling is no fun. Better to sleep ASAP. read more

I recently had a discectomy performed at Sequoia Surgical Pavilion, and I couldn't be happier, both with the results of the surgery and with the experience, both pre- and post-op. Dr. Lee from Muir Orthopedics was the surgeon, and he is top-notch. The pre-op and post-op nurses (Jenny and Karen) were very caring and attentive. Dr. Jacobs, the anesthesiologist, put me at ease, both with a helpful phone call the night before surgery, and during pre-op. The facility itself is fairly new and very nicely designed. Absolutely worst facility and staff ever! Impossible to get ahold of anyone prior to your surgery to ask basic questions like, 'how much will I have to pay out of pocket?'. Who in their right mind wouldn't want to know that?! Well I did and called 2 times and left messages with the gal there and weeks went by without a response. I finally had to stop there on my way home and her response was.... 'oh yah, I have been meaning to call you'. Go figure. Well she then gives me a breakdown of the procedure and says the MOST you will have to pay out of pocket is $450.00. Obviously when I get the bill from them after my surgery it is just about $600.00.... which I paid and just kept my mouth shut. It gets worse.... apparently they fought something with my insurance company and scored another $600 out of them 7 months after the fact.... and surprise, I get a $60 bill in the mail 7 months later!!! What a bunch of crooks. The recovery nurses were extremely rude to me, and when I complained.... crickets. Negative stars if I could. read more
