Astoria Tavern is a wonderful addition to the bar scene of Astoria and LIC. They have only been open 3 weeks or so and I think the ownership is part of the Irish Rover. I guess I did not notice construction over the last few months while going to Sal, Kris and Charlie, since the bar is only 25 feet away and this could be a new regular routine. Go to SKC, then go to Astoria Tavern for lunch. Astoria Tavern does not serve food. The interior of the bar is very nice. It has that new bar coat which some people like and some don't. Personally I found the place very warm and welcoming. It had a combination brick walls, wood bar and beam ceilings. Plenty of TVs (16) and they where well place throughout the tavern. Lighting and music, on point. Tuesday night's bartender was Kevin. An Irish guy who definitely knows his trade. I was greeted immediately and was engage in conversation a couple of times. Since the dozen or so customers where all new, he was working the crowd. Job well done. I tend to stick to Bud Lite bottle when I go to a new place and at $4.50 (I think), fair price for the area. I did notice 14 or so craft beers on tap, including Guinness. They seem to cater to the ever changing neighborhood, late 20's, 30's. Their was a nice mix on my recent visit; suit and tie, shorts, causal, etc. I did notice two things that may drive me crazy and since this is a new place they get a pass. If you sit near the front, you will be blinded by the outside lights beaming in through the very top of the front windows. Very annoying. Wasted space. I am sure it will be address in time. The second is more of a personal vice. I like my TVs bigger. I am so use to these big ass units, that I can view from anywhere. The tavern has these small 32 inch models that you can only watch from the space nearest you. My bad. I guess they want to attract a date crowd and married couples. LOL. Credit Cards, but no AMEX. Bummer...... Overall, Astoria Tavern is a great all around place to enjoy an adult beverage, conversation with friends, chill solo or enjoy some sports on TV. My friends and I have been here a bunch of times. We usually come with a group of people on a Saturday to hang and have some drinks. They also usually have karaoke on Saturday nights as well. I've been here to watch sports games as well. Note they don't serve food but you can buy food and bring it in I'm fairly certain, considering they are right next to Sal, Kris and Charlies this is awesome! The bartenders are always friendly, attentive and not over bearing. This bar is the perfect place to grab a seat and have some drinks with your friends. They also have a trivia night which I really want to try out soon. It's $20 to enter per team, I believe. This is the local bar I usually end up at if I go out. byo food! How can you not like a bar that is BYO Food? Now, while I won't tell you the sordid tale of how I ended up here, I will tell you that Mark is the man. Where else can you open a tab w/ a Bartender, drink to your hearts content, and then have them put you in a cab on the way home at the end of the night? Suffice it to say that I owe this dude....so, the Astoria Tavern is my go-to drinks place now. Tons of tvs and they'll play whatever you want, pretty decent beer and liquor selection and THE BEST POUR OF GUINNESS I HAVE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE (even while in Ireland). Now, growing up in Ireland these blokes now how to make a good pour w/ the clove on top. Can't beat that. Prices are very fair, and a little on the low end. DO IT if you're in the area. Pretty chill place. Its nice walking into a fairly new bar. Everything about the place was clean. They have darts here with an automated score keeper which I thought was pretty cool. The drink specials were good and so are their regular priced beers. The beer on tap didn't get me sick so that's how I know they keep their stuff clean. ::bathroom alert:: Very, Very happy w/ the bathroom. Clean, smell and amount of toilet paper etc. I know I will find my way back here. They are tons of TVs so for sports people I am sure they will flock here. Called in here on a saturday on a friends recommendation, beautiful irish bar! The bartender Malachi was soooo nice, kept cracking jokes and telling us stories (or yarns as he called them). The bartenders really makes a bar, so he had us won over!! The drinks were cheap and the 4th one was on the house!! It took about 10 minutes to get drinks each time we went to the bar and no it was not crowded at all. This is an Irish pub out of central casting. It's pretty dark, but it does have some windows up front. There's a full bar and a small selection of draught beers, but they're decent. Tons of TVs to watch whatever floats your boat. The bartenders are friendly and attentive. They have good instincts of knowing who wants to chat and who wants to be left to his own devices. Love this place. It's really close to my apartment. Trivia night is fun and challenging. Bartender has been the same every time - an Irish gentleman who is friendly with a perfectly heavy pour. I'm in love! I'm a huge fan of the Irish Rover on 28th Avenue, and always said to myself, "Wow, wouldn't it be great (and terrible for my wallet and liver) if the Irish Rover was a block away from my apartment?" Well, my prayers were answered this summer when the Astoria Tavern opened up, bringing everything I love about the Rover even closer to home. Good crowd, good beer selection, live music on the weekends, friendly Irish bartenders -- what more could you ask for. Another great thing about this spot is that they open at 8 am. And, you can bring your own food. We showed up with breakfast sandwiches and enjoyed a few beers on a Saturday morning before heading up to Yankee Stadium which worked out perfectly. After moving from Broadway to Ditmars i tried forever to find a new local bar I'd be happy with. For eight months I went without a local watering hole that I could call my own. While my wallet was very happy I can assure I was not. I've seen Astoria Tavern on yelp for months and I just couldn't figure out where it was or why I'd never passed by it before. First off I'm terrible with addresses and mix up the streets and avenues all the time but if I were to tell someone from Astoria where this bar was I'd just tell them it's right next to Sal, Chris and Charlie's. The location is a little obscure as it's located off of any major street. I've been to Sal, Chris, and Charlie's so about a dozen times and couldn't believe I've never noticed Astoria Tavern. I guess craving giant cold cut sandwiches will do that to ya. Anyways, I've been here a few times already for happy hour and Astoria Tavern hands down has the best Happy Hour in all of Queens. The bar opens at 8am and their happy hour runs all day til 7pm Monday through Friday. Happy Hour Deals: $4 Drafts $4 Import Bottles $3.50 Domestic Bottles $4 Well Drinks $4 Shots Astoria Tavern doesn't serve food but right at the front door is a barrel full of peanuts and a stack of bowls and you're welcome to help yourself to them. They also left you bring food from outside and they have eateries on right next door on both side of the bar. I've had about three different bartenders and they've all been great guys. Everything inside Astoria Tavern looks brand new and well kept. They have tv's all around the bar and show any sporting event that's on. I've always liked this pub, but i had a bad experience last night. Some friends of mine had put several Latin songs on the jukebox. The bartender very rudely informed them that they weren't going to be allowed to play any more "Spanish music," because this was an Irish bar, ands she was "the boss. " I told her that I was enjoying the music, and that I was planning to play some more songs from this genre. She was equally aggressive and rude to me. I put $25 worth of songs into the jukebox, but sure enough, she blocked each of my selections. My choices were not offensive in any way, other than that they were Spanish language pop hits. I hope this bartender is not representative of the attitudes of the bar's ownership and management. read more

The Irish and their bars will be the death of me. Between this place, Sissy's, the Rover and Quays, it's fair to say the Irish in Astoria take about the same amount of my paycheck as my landlord. And that's just fine. The bar tenders at the Tavern are awesome. They have some big TVs and show games all the time. The prices are good. The selection is big. And the place just looks SUPER NICE. Nothing against the dimmer Quays and Sissy's (two of my other favorite bars in the area), but Astoria Tavern has this wood finish and just classier look. By the way, if you like Irish whiskey, do yourself a favor and try some Tullamore Dew. I haven't seen it anywhere else around here, and it's smoother than Jameson. For real. read more

Cool bar, I'm glad I live close to it. I came here for the abysmal game 4 of the world series. I brought food from Thirsty Koala as per another review recommendation. Walking into a bar with awesome food and not being forced to buy crappy microwaved / fried bar junk was awesome. I sat and was promptly greeted by Mark who did an amazing job of taking care of me all night - what a cool guy! Here's some Pros of this place: * Mostly great crowd. One guy was being excessively rowdy but I think he tired himself out as the night went on. Everyone else was cheering and clapping appropriately. Met a couple pretty cool people just chilling at the bar. * Clean enough bathroom - I had very low expectations as this is a dive but I was impressed! * Decent selection of beer on tap. I'm typically used to more craft beer on tap but I understand that they had a decent enough selection to serve it's purpose. They had more crafty stuff in bottles so that's an option. * Great guiness on tap! * Mark, the bartender was super. * Lots of TVs! * Bring your own food! Order food from anywhere. * Accepts credit cards, no whining about it! Cons: (Not many) * I find it really odd that there's no TV's behind the bar. There's some on the sides and tons across from it but it's odd that you have to turn to see the tv. I'm nitpicking here =/ * I lost count of how many beers I had by the end of the night to do the math on my bill - but I think it came to about $6.50 per. I think that is high for the area and the type of bar this is. I hear they do buybacks so that's pretty good. I want to stop in for Happy hour one day to try the cheaper draft beer prices and I hear they provide food from Sal, Kris and Charlie's during some games - I want to check that out too. read more

My favourite local bar. Awesome HH deals. And free food courtesy of SKC next door when a Rangers game is on - this alone tempts me to become a Rangers fan. Bartenders are super friendly and got a great sense of humour. Decent selection of beers, though a bit limited for dark beers which are my thing. It's also a small-ish place, with maybe 5-6 TVs. But the ambience is laid back and welcoming, and I'll be coming back for the vibes alone. read more

I've been going to Astoria Tavern a few times a month for the past 6 months. i've mainly been going with small groups on Tuesday nights for their Pub Quiz (trivia). Also have been to watch a few sporting events. The bar generally isn't too crowded. Beer selection is decent with one/two local beers, but mainly big, mass-market beers on tap. I always enjoy the free peanuts that can be found in the front in the big barrel. No food served here, but there's a deli next door and we've gotten local stuff delivered a few times as well. read more

Came here on a Thursday night at about 10-11 PM and the bar was full and so lively, and there was a live band playing. Sometimes it's hard to find fun and lively bars in a quiet neighborhood like Astoria, so we had a really nice time! Free peanuts were a plus, and prices were average for the area.
