Well, I can say without a doubt that this version is excellent (8.5/10) as described. The dish comes with three pieces that are crispy and tender. However, they gotta make a better tartar sauce than the ones they served in packets. Also, we switched out chips for onion rings. They were fantastic! I also really enjoyed their French Onion Soup (8/10) and the Shepherds Pie (7.5/10). The soup was flavorful without being too salty like most restaurants, while the pie had relatively fluffy mash potato with tasty ground beef mixture. The only item that was a slight letdown was the Chicken Pot Pie (6/10). The puff pastry was decent and so was the cream sauce. The problem was the overcooked and dry chicken breast meat. Our server was very friendly and always had a smile on her face. Btw, even though the space was basically a dive bar, the energetic 60's and 70's music was definitely a plus. At one time, Cronin & Phelan had a terrible reputation. Their patrons would hang out on the corner and stench up the street with cigarette smoke, then during the COVID period planned super-spreader parties, as advertised by their followers on social media. And that is why I boycotted them. Everything was very lax at that time, with little enforcement from the SLA. In October, my partner and I headed back to try their Irish breakfast and to see how things had improved. At the time, a large party was being held in their backroom, and we were not prepared to wait forever. We asked to speak with the owner, Mike Peacock, and told him we had to be at church to ring the church bells. Can't believe it's been 11 years since my last review. Lol. We've been here so many times in between. I don't know what I was thinking. Last night was great because we walked in and got a table immediately. It was just after 9 PM on Saturday. Sometimes we've been here and we actually cannot get a table. So that says something about their food As usual, the service was great. Food was delicious. We had the roast beef sandwich on garlic bread with mozzarella. And the roast turkey dinner, my fave. Longtime old school Irish Pub in the heart of Astoria that pours a really nice pint of Guinness. Definitely more of an old man's type bar like you used to see all the time years ago, but that's not a bad thing. Very welcoming to everyone. Anytime I've eaten here the food has always been great. How did I leave my last review 14 years ago? And I question my rating process with only 4 stars . Thank goodness Cronins survived Covid. They are still sending out the same amazing classics and have added great specials over the years. The French onion soup is still the most amazing concoction on earth and Cronins could only make it better if they offered it via IV. My mom and I love to share either the turkey or roast beef dinner platters with two soups and still end up with leftovers. The side of turnips is a comfort meal in itself. Potato leek is close second to the french onion. The staff makes the place that much better. The entire place is definitely invested in their patrons and community.. You wouldn't think going into a simple Irish pub, but this place is pumping out some top notch items. Obviously being a true Irish pub you get some thick accents and people that like to drink and have a good time. It's pretty awesome actually, and the staff and patrons made us feel like we've been going in for decades. Fish and Chips, Shepherds Pie, Corned Beef Sandwich, all delicious. My wife and I had another great late afternoon/early evening date meal here. We both ordered from the expansive Friday specials menu. We shared a large house salad, which was good. She got chicken cordon bleu with mashed potatoes and mashed turnips. I got the fried fish sandwich with cheese and a side of onion rings. We were both very satisfied with our meals. We each got a pint of beer. Our waitress was very attentive. They give you so much we could only eat half of the food and took the rest to go. Fantastic pour in the beer, sipping on while enjoying the plethora of TVs showing all the sports available. Sandwich comes out shortly after - a cheese/bacon/onion/tomato offering between toasted white bread. Good balance of flavor, especially with the loaded cheese; served alongside a pile of crispy fries and a pickle. Could have used some more salt, but the bacon in the sandwich helps. Standard no-frills Irish bar and restaurant in Astoria. It's been here forever and hopefully it will remain a staple in the neighborhood. We decided to stop in here on one of the last days before indoor dining shut down (again) in NYC. We enjoyed some cocktails while sharing a shepherd's pie and chatted with the very nice wait staff. The cocktails are likely not their big sell here (vodka sodas were just OK, nothing too elaborate) -- most people opt for domestic beer or Guinness when dining here. The Irish dishes are what you really come here for and the shepherd's pie did not disappoint. It was so large, we took some of it home! If one asked me where the best Irish pubs were, I'd tell em to take their pick of the ones in Sunnyside and Woodside. Cronin & Phelan's is among several pubs that is making Astoria look really good as a destination for all things Irish, but are they best in the hood? More than likely, yes. The bar is modest but the selection is vast. They have a number of solid beers on tap and a pretty good selection of spirits to boot. The bartenders are all lovely people and coupled with the TVs with sports and the occasional live music, it's hard not to have a good time here. Their usual cast of characters (i.e. the regulars!) can make for good conversation and if one is really good, they might get a drink out of it. Where they really shine is their food. Sure the allure of Irish whiskey and beers are laden at the bar but the quality of their edible offerings far surpass the average pub fare. The shepherd's pie is quite tasty, as is their bangers and mash. I've never been a huge fan of Irish breakfast platters, but their blood pudding is worthy of every bite. Then they have a number of other items, ranging from bar food to Italian classics like a veal marsala and fried ravioli. The burgers are halfway decent, even French onion soup deserves a mention. Every time I eat their loaded potato skins, I question my judgement because I can eat a lot more than the 3 that come in one order. Also, what kind of an Irish pub offers dessert like apple pie a la mode, strawberry rhubarb pie, or a triple chocolate mousse cake? Cronin & Phelan's does. In addition, they have multiple flavors of ice cream and "Mexican" platter of sweet plantains, churros, and more ice cream. This place is a kind of venue worth visiting for just about any occasion. I have been her twice now in the last two years, not sure why I haven't come here more often, as I live so close. My friend Krista knows the owners. I came here for birthday parties. They have a party room in the back of the bar/restaurant. This place is awesome. The people here are friendly and personable. The food is great. The Sheppards Pie is awesome. I was just here this past Sunday for Krista's 40th Birthday Party. The waitstaff are great, they come around quickly to make sure everyone has drinks. The food was hot. We had Penne A La Vodka, Baked Ziti, Chicken Cutlet, Sheppards Pie, Salad, Potato Salad which was awesome. There was so much food which was served buffet style. I've passed by Cronin & Phelan's many times on my way home but finally decided to stop in. I ordered the Mac and Cheese and a side of fries. The first thing I was blown away by were the prices. They were very decent considering the area! And the portions are very generous. In addition to that, the food came out relatively quickly. The bartender that I ordered from was very pleasant and friendly. I really wanna come back for the full bar experience (food and drinks) sometime soon. The Mac and Cheese was delicious. It was still very hot when I got home and had the comforting ooey gooeyness to it. The fries were good too. Very nice Neighborhood Bar with the BEST TV placement for viewing sports. Cronin & Phelan's is an awesome place to have a drink, meet friends or watch some sports. The Bar is on the right as you walk in with 20 plus seats. It is very roomy and comfortable. It has a six foot high divider in the middle of the room that separates the bar from the main dining area with a dozen tables and waitress service. What makes this place a gem, are the placement of TVs. They have about 8 or so 42 inch TVs along the length of the wall on the back bar. They are all align perfectly with excellent eye placement. You then have 3 larger TVs at each end of the space. Basically you can sit or stand anywhere at C & P and catch a great view of any of the games. Their not a bad view or spot in the place. Bartender service is friendly and efficient. The place has a large regular clientele and you will find someone always willing to talk sports. I have only had soup here, but they seem to serve some good "comfort food". Its your basic meat and potatoes place which isn't bad when your watching a game on TV. Overall, if you want to catch a game Cronin & Phelan's is as good as it gets. They seem to have all the sports packages and with so many TVs you can always find your favorite team or sport. My friend Steph had wanted to take me here I feel for ages. Like most Astoria establishments that she gets the "squees" about. Since I didn't make it past our first bar on our St. Patrick's Day Irish Pub bar crawl, I feel I was gypped and deprived on the Irish Astoria bar tour and glad I finally checked this out even if I didn't drink here and was vastly hungover after sleeping crookedly on my friend's boyfriend's couch and had eggs and coffee for brunch. The place is warm and glowy. That's exciting. But what's MORE exciting is that for their complimentary breadbasket at breakfast they give you HUGE FREAKING DELICIOUS BUTTERY SCONES! Yes. You heard me. I could have made an entire additional meal out of those huge nuggets of heaven (which I did and was incredibly fat and happy). The other amazing side of all of this is that everything is CHEAP AS HELL. I had breakfast for pretty much under $10 and I couldn't come close to finishing it. (I ate too many scones). How was the food? Not bad. I had the traditional eggs benedict with a side of fries. The hollandaise was a little on the too lemony side but the eggs were poached beautifully and I was already in my happy place with eating butter packets and scones. My friend Stephy had made an odd request in that she remembered there was a chicken dish she had once for dinner but it wasn't on the menu any longer. It's like a chicken kiev stuffed with cheese and ham and they offered to make it for her anyway. It all comes with a vegetable and mashed potatoes. Vegetables in Stephanie's case are French fries. Her boyfriend had the traditional Irish Breakfast: Eggs, bangers, black pudding, and ham. I tried the black pudding it was pretty tasty. My friends were confused and expecting pudding but I had had it before a couple years ago in England (blood sausage patties) and its still all the same.
